8 rare local dishes from the Greek islands
Post inspired by this Greek article. I picked half of the dishes in order to create an island and local exclusive list, then translated and summarized the info. The pictures have links and in most of the respective websites you can find the recipes in Greek.
Makarunes with Sitaka, Kasos island
Makarunes is thick penne-like handmade pasta which is served with caramelised onions and the special Sitaka cheese of Kasos island. Sitaka is so rare, it is sometimes hard to find even in Athens but some restaurants do have this dish in their menu.
Tumblr media
Atherinópita (Smelt pie), Syros island
It is not truly a pie, but it is a dish produced from frying various small fish like sand smelts and bogues as well as onions all close together until they create a crust holding them together.
Tumblr media
Photography: Χριστίνα Γεωργιάδου
Stuffed Hachles, Lesvos island
These are small baskets made of sun- and air-dried wheat kneaded with sour tarhana. They are usually stuffed with cheese, fresh tomato, herbs and spices but the filling is up to anyone's appetite really.
Tumblr media
Sweet sefuklotí pie, Naxos and Tinos islands
Sefukloti or fesklopita is a rare pie that is actually a dessert, which is surprising (in Greek cuisine) because it looks exactly like a spinach pie. Sefukloti is a traditional recipe of these islands, particularly of the Catholics celebrating Christmas Eve (The Cyclades islands have the largest presence of Catholic Christians in Greece.) The pie is made of swiss chard, rice, sugar, molasses, walnuts, raisins, cinnamon and clove. The crust is kneaded with orange juice. Some also add onions and leeks, which also do not prevent this pie from working perfectly as a dessert. Before the serving, sefukloti is dressed with sesame seeds and honey.
Tumblr media
Anthógalo with eggs, Réthymnon, Crete island
Anthogalo or Staka is produced exclusively in Crete island. It is made of the salted fats of sheep milk. In this recipe, eggs are fried with anthogalo which works here like butter. The eggs are buttered by the anthogalo, while parts of it curdle and form cheese pieces during the frying.
Tumblr media
Aliaða & Vakalaópita, Cephalonia island
Aliaða is the local version of the Greek garlic dip "skorðaliá". Aliada is made of garlic, potatoes and the juices of boiled cod or octopus. The latter turns the dip a burgundy colour. Besides the famous fried cod that is enjoyed everywhere in Greece, in Cephalonia cod is also used to make "Vakalaópita”, a cod fish pie, in which the crust and the filling are kneaded with wine and vinegar.
Tumblr media
Rhodian pungiá, Rhodes island
These are wild greens pies baked in special local traditional pans. The wild greens are not boiled before they are added to the pie but they are salt dried. The juice that is produced by this process is mixed with olive oil and is used as a dressing for the pie when it's served.
Tumblr media
Anthos, Andros island
Anthos means flower. In Andros island it is also the name of the local spoon sweet, made of lemon flowers as well as the flowers of other citrus plants. It is fragrant, chewy and is considered an aristocratic dessert with limited production. It is a pretty hard recipe, because the flowers must be picked at the right time of the season and the cooking must be very careful so that the sweet won't get bitter and dark.

Why are modern farming games getting rid of festivals?
The latest story of seasons, Pioneers of Olive Town (I'm not including the remakes cause they're remakes. Also Friends of Mineral Town actually has festivals), Stardew Valley and Coral Island have two festivals per season. It's ridiculous. I don't have Winds of Anthos but I hear it only has four total
I liked the festivals. I wanna see more festivals.
I'm using Back to Nature as my baseline cause it was my first. But they fit in about 18 festivals. And about 8 of them were romantic in nature or at least involved some kind of couple activity
Which brings me to my next point. Where are the romantic festivals? Half of the Olive Town festivals have you doing something with your partner so fine but last I checked Stardew Valley just has the dance. And I haven't seen the last festival in Coral Island yet but so far none of them have involved dates.
I'm referring to BtN again but give us the Spring Harmony Festival! I don't care if you call it Valentine's Day I want a day to give out chocolate. The Starry Night festival. Moon viewing.
Is it because festivals that just involve dialouge are considered boring now? There has to be some kind of mini game attached? I don't know I'm just spitballing. I'm loving Coral Island but the festivals don't all need minigames
I loved the goddess festival in BtN. I loved seeing them in their pretty dresses and then going out on a date afterwards. I loved it in the girl version where I actually got to dance with them (also off topic but Gotz giving you his wife's dress was the sweetest scene and I really wish I still had my psp so I could see it again).
Rune Factory 5 has it's problems but it still manages to have a good mix of activity and dialouge festivals with about 22 or so in total
Sorry, I'm all over the place.
Point is, I want more festivals in farming games. And I want more romantic festivals

Had a thought while i was chilling with my cat today, as you do:
Penelope is the weird Water Wife™ and Anthos is a black cat. We all know that black cats are something else, just weird in their own way.
So.
Are those two just weird together?? Do they stare at you, unblinking, with their pretty eyes?? The half-naiad queen is watching you with her cat on her lap. They're silently judging you. As if she wasn't scary enough on her own - she has a black void with two big eyes by her side as well.
I'm sorry i'm really intrigued by the idea of weird wife and her weird cat.
YES!!! I love my weirdos!!! Also her and Odysseus are a lot like cats in a way as well >:)
Have their "favorite people", chaos, don't take orders from really anyone, etc. They're like kitty cats 🥺 even with how they're affectionate in a way. they're fidgeting with each other often but also will stubbornly be like "I want snuggles. I don't care if I'm uncomfy. >:( "
Odysseus: You know, I'm not gonna stop carving. You might get some wood shavings on you~ Penelope, knowing he won't let any get on her face at least: Don' care. Odysseus: Okay, if you say so. Penelope: ... Odysseus: asdfghjkl You stop that right now 🫵👁👁
Penelope: Odysseus, I'm trying to weave. (one of the smaller looms from the later periods, not accurate but don't care) Odysseus, squeezing her tighter: MMM >:( . *insert that baby seal video type of MMM* Penelope: At least your hair is tied up, but you can't be mad at me when your hair gets woven into it...Stop fucking with the thread, Odysseus.
You want something sad? >:) You want something really sad, Niko?
Years later, while Odysseus is away, something she's wearing keeps tickling her. She gets annoyed with it and has it taken off to see what it is ("My weaving is always flawless. >:( wtf is this?") only to look in the area and see that it was hair tickling her. A tiny bit of it is coming out from the cloth. It's not black and straight like her own. Nor is it black and curly like her son's. It's auburn and curly. Anticlea died years ago. And she remembers what she was doing when she first started this weaving.
And she weeps. :') Even gone, he's constantly "there" you know?
ANYWAYS!!! BACK TO KITTY CATS!!!
Penelope liked these critters because of that but also, "Heyyyyy, you're pretty good at fishing, you funky little creature!!!" Also, they like playing with string so weaving is always fun. Little headcanon but Ithaca doesn't really have as many cats as Sparta (hopping off ships from Egypt). So while Odysseus has seen them, he never really thinks much of them but then Penelope is like "yes, this is my weird little creature. You think you like me? You like this creature now." and he plays with Anthos a little and then is like, "Okay, I see why you like them...Penelope, why is she buzzing?👀 You promised you wouldn't put me in dangerous situations anymore!"
Probably a few cats are brought over for her but it doesn't become like, overrun you know?
Probably others were a bit annoyed by it at first. (cat hair to clean, cats are chaos, etc.) but the king and queen are scary when they want to be. Argos gets along pretty okay with them too!
Since having kitties outdoors is very dangerous, as there are birds of prey and such. A hawk once picked up one of the kitties but an Owl brought kitty back :')
Kitties know that Olive tree bed is NOT a scratching post.
Kitties will sleep with Penelope and check on her when she weeps :'D
"PENELOPE! ANTHOS JUST PUT A DEAD MOUSE IN FRONT OF ME!" "Sometimes they do that. Think it's the cat way of showing you they care." "I don't want this!"
so it's been around 7 years (changed it from 5 to 7) of them being married when Telemachus is born. And Anthos (and others) are very gentle with him but also "please don't grab me so roughly with your little baby hands".
Anthos is a bit older by the time he's around four so Penelope usually holds her but Anthos has had some kittens and...
Penelope: Telemachus, you sure you got him, sweetie? Telemachus: Yuh-huh.
Tumblr media
Telemachus loves them as well btw. And he learns how to hold them right but the cat he's holding is pretty chill anyways.
When Odysseus is a "beggar", and before Penelope comes to see him. He sees two kittens playing and thinks "Okay, they're definitely from Anthos' line." and rips a bit of the rags he's wearing to make a string and kind of plays with them. Then Melantho comes in and they run off and he's like "okay, they don't like you. Why is that?" and then he sees why.
When Odysseus is on Aeaea, it's...stressful and he feels on edge. He gets a specific "nightmare" and it's not a fun time. Yes, they dance and sing but he's still very stressed. (Headcanon that Odysseus is actually a pretty good dancer.) Circe has a lot of BIG cats and she has one that is a big black panther with blue eyes (yes, this cat was once a man. he actually will kind of have a story of his own in my fics eventually) And sometimes when he's by himself and not doing well, Big Black kitty will come in and kind of lay on him. Makes him think of Anthos and home. :'D
Polites: That panther seems to like you a lot. He's always following you. Odysseus: Yeah, he's my buddy.
"You were human once... Do you miss them? Your loved ones? Do you even remember?" *headbonks him*
*Big kitty yawns* "You know, my wife has sharp teeth as well being mostly naiad. My son most likely too by now... He was teething when I last saw him but the two he did have were already sharp. Penelope would soothe him with water when he got fussy from them..."
Penelope's 75% Naiad and Telemachus is 37.5% :D In some versions, Icarius and Tyndarius are half naiad! >:D And ANY chance I can have Penelope be weirder, I will FUCKING take it.

do you know harvest moon winds of anthos? ik the last couple of games were flawed but this one sounds good(ish?)… I just want a new farming game that feels like time well spent after the disappointment that was rf5 😔
If you plan on playing any of the new harvest moon games I highly recommend getting them on sale theres always one that includes the dlc too, Winds of anthos does look better than what they've put out in the past but I don't think its worth full price :( Did you know story of seasons is the "real" harvest moon but due to legal stuff with the companies they can't use HM anymore? Loved the first game + trio of towns, I wasn't a fan of pioneers of olive down but I haven't played the ones that have come out since.
Here are some farming sims that I've played or they've been on my radar, I'll put a * next to the ones I've actually played and another * if its harvest moon/rune factory ish
Roots of patcha**
My time at Portia**/My time at sandrock (Sandrock isn't a sequel but I would reccomend playing Portia first. If you don't like Portia I still think you should give Sandrock a try)
Coral Island
Sun Haven**
Kynseed*
Immortal Life
Everdant Skies*
Alchemy Story (I think this counts...)
Littlewood*

I'm probably gonna get crucified for this, but the new Harvest Moon game, Winds of Anthos, has thus far captivated me much more than the latest non-remake Story of Seasons, Pioneers of Olive Town.
The character designs in PoOT, especially for the bachelors, was just terrible. I don't even remember half the bachelors because almost all of them, save for Iori and the DLC bachelors, were designed like background- and filler characters, to the point where I struggle even remembering their names. And their personalities weren't much better than the designs, tbh. Everything was kinda bland and uninteresting.
The bachelor and bachelorette designs in WoA though? We can laugh about the art style being a rip-off of Pokémon all we want, but at least we get some interesting character designs, that actually show some damn personality.
The big, open world isn't everyone's cup of tea but I enjoy taking long rides over wide, green fields and just spending nights watching the stars quite a bit, while PoOT made me feel downright claustrophobic at times with how limited the area is.
The animal designs are also all cute without being overdone. Especially the horses, because the Story of Seasons horses mostly look like backyard breeding gone terribly, terribly wrong. There is such a thing as too stylized, you know.
Of course WoA does still have its issues, some of which are gonna be a dealbreaker to some people. The farming is still too simplistic, for one. And I wish they could bring back the ability to just buy seeds instead of having to chase down those damn sprites. And it would be nice for side-characters to have unique designs again too, instead of making them so cookie-cutter to make the bachelors and bachelorettes stand out more.

Tsurune Flower Analysis—Kaito and Nanao
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kaito
エゾギク (Ezogiku)/矢車菊 (Yagurumagiku) (JPN)
Kaito’s flowers are admittedly a bit of a puzzle just judging by appearance as they can either look like asters (specifically Matsumoto blue/pink tipped white asters, a breed of China asters!) or cornflowers.
With asters, the hanakotoba for the blue variety are ‘trust’ and ‘I trust you but I’m also worried’ and the pink variety means ‘pleasant dreams’. For the pink ones, I personally have some trouble connecting ‘sweet/pleasant dreams’ to Kaito, apart from the short moment in chapter 5 (part 1) of the second novel (currently untranslated) that described him as having a ‘sleeping face that looked like that of an angel’. If anyone has better ideas, I’d love to hear them! We see a lot more blue than there is pink on the spread, but a lot of that has to do with Kaito having strong connections to ‘trust’ in itself. Nanao mentions that Kaito, in contrast to his rough exterior, truly wants to be part of and trust his team; it just takes a while since it comes as a challenge for Kaito to be sure of a person. Kaito isn’t one to hold back and says as much towards Minato at first, though he thankfully softened up after trusting him as a teammate. But as for the second meaning, ‘I trust you but I’m also worried’, the moments I’d relate to this vary with the novel and anime though both happen in the same event—the prefectural tournament. In the anime, because Masa-san is unable to be with them, Kaito tells them to remember his teachings, yet Minato tells them not to overthink while shooting. Kaito becomes angry as he doesn’t understand what Minato is getting at, but he ultimately decides to trust him. In the novel, Kaito gets upset by Minato hiding the pain in his wrist, which he took to mean that Minato didn’t trust him or the team enough to tell them until they had to find out themselves. In both instances, he’d already warmed up and trusted Minato but was worried that same trust wasn’t reciprocated.
Hanakotoba for cornflowers doesn’t differentiate on colors, but they have an overall meaning of ‘sensitivity’, ‘refinement’, ‘training’, and ‘trust’ (fun fact: cornflowers are called 矢車菊/yaguruma giku in jp, which literally translates to ‘arrow wheel chrysanthemum’ due to the petals looking like an arrow wheel). I do think these also apply pretty well to Kaito! I’ve already discussed ‘trust’ above so I’ll just quickly talk about the other three here, starting with ‘sensitivity’. We all know Kaito is much softer than he lets on and is quite sensitive to how others (especially those he cares about) react to him or the state of the team (though admittedly not in as wide a range as Nanao’s). ‘Refinement’ and ‘training’ I feel can be put together and attributed to Kaito’s drive to refine his technique in kyuudou—his intense zeal can trip him up sometimes, but it’s the thought that counts.
Aster/Cornflower (Western)
Besides being present in multiple European myths, asters symbolize patience, love of variety, elegance, daintiness, and afterthought (or the wish that something had happened differently), while blue asters symbolize stability, depth, and faith. It’s hard to imagine anyone meant any connection with daintiness or elegance, and Kaito seems pretty by the book, so I doubt ‘love of variety’ connects much to him either. Patience is also a bit of a stretch given how impatient he was to master the bow turn despite Masa-san telling him it would have to be developed over years of practice. Afterthought/the wish that something had happened differently is interesting in regards to the prefectural tournament, given how frustrated he was with himself for his mistakes. Faith was already touched on above with ‘trust’, and stability and depth speak to his character and development.
Cornflowers are significant to Germany, France, Estonia, Finland, and Sweden, usually in regards to military endeavors. They also symbolize wealth, prosperity, fortune, friendship, celibacy, anticipation, delicacy, perfection, and refinement. Friendship obviously relates to Kaito learning how to be friends with the rest of the team. Anticipation could also refer to his fascination with the bow turn, as well as his general drive to improve and succeed individually and as a team along with ‘perfection’ and ‘refinement’.
Tumblr media
Nanao
金木犀/Kinmokusei (JPN)
Kinmokusei, or the Orange Osmanthus, has the flower meaning of “Noble Person” and “Truth” in Japanese. Nanao is a very honest person, with himself and with the people around him. He doesn’t deny his reasons for doing anything even if he believes they’re shallow, like with joining kyuudou, because he’d prefer the truth rather than to mask them with sugarcoated words or actions. He doesn’t hide his character in any fancy names or backgrounds. Others could see him as a playboy for hitting on practically every cute girl he sees, but that’s because it’s in his character. The majority of girls love him, maybe for his looks, but also because despite being slightly flirtatious, he’s very kind and honest. Nobility could also refer to his role as the ‘princely’ character.
Similarly to Seiya, Nanao’s most meaningful actions throughout the series are for the sake of other people. He joined kyudo with the excuse about hakama, yet he reveals to Minato that he did so to help Kaito become more comfortable with other people—and for the competitive side of him not wanting to lose to his cousin. He also tries his best to entertain his fangirls, even if he sometimes gets tired of it.
Tumblr media
Nanao is a very noble person when you consider his true intentions from his actions and his feelings. He’s honest and unselfish, and he would put his friends and the people he cares about first and foremost. As lax as his character can be, he doesn’t let his feelings get the best of him and forms a peaceful and logical way of handling things.
Osmanthus (Western)
Osmanthus, also known as Fragrant Olive, are small orange flowers that grow in clusters. They are known for their exquisite fragrance, as their Greek name suggests (osma meaning fragrant and anthos meaning flower). Most species originate from eastern Asia, and most of the folklore and meanings are specific to China. They are used to symbolize love, romance, and faithfulness. Osmanthus are associated with many lunar legends in China and the Moon Festival, held in September, is also sometimes called the Osmanthus Festival.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any English floriography for osmanthus, and the Chinese meanings don’t specifically speak to Nanao’s character besides symbolizing love and being very attention-grabbing.

for this meme
In the present, Elio insists on one pink flower and one blue flower. Oliver doesn’t get it but acquiesces nonetheless. A pink rose, blue agapanthus. Agapanthus is derived from Greek: ἀγάπη (agapē – "love"), ἄνθος (anthos – "flower"). This he likes.
This wasn’t very vague. I am shit at this meme.

Got the PDF proof for my sci-fi short story today! This one will appear in THE FANS ARE BURIED TALES from Crazy 8 Press, edited by Peter & Kathleen David. The theme of this antho is that a snowstorm strikes a popular convention, stranding all the fans and cosplayers, and to pass the time, they tell each other stories from their fandoms (kinda like The Canterbury Tales). My story “The Space Opera Fan’s Tale (or, Intergalactic Journeys S6 E8: Ruins in the Sky)” is basically a Star Trek fan fic, about Ensign Oliver Gao’s first time leading an away mission… ahem… off-ship assignment. Tasked with assisting archaeologists who are excavating an ancient space station, Ollie soon finds himself in a dangerous situation when the station’s AI suddenly comes online… THE FANS ARE BURIED TALES will be coming your way soon! I don’t have an exact release date yet but it should be late February… And yes, I saw it too. Go ahead and call me Space Opera Fan 😉 https://www.instagram.com/p/CYnfxFygYFd/?utm_medium=tumblr

Osmanthus Burkwoodii | Hedge Plants
The Osmanthus burkwoodii is an under-appreciated gem of our Seattle Japanese Garden – and a favourite of mine. Renowned plant explorer Dan Hinkley calls it “an aristocratic and highly refined member of the dicot family.” Consisting of about 30 species of evergreen shrubs and little trees, Osmanthus is notable for its attractive foliage and little , usually fragrant, flowers. The genus name derives from the Greek osme (fragrant) and anthos, (flower). Most species are native to woodlands within the temperate areas of Asia, but the genus also includes cultivars (cultivated varieties, sometimes called “garden varieties”), and species native to the occident.
Tumblr media
There are several sorts of Osmanthus in our garden, but just one is spring-flowering – Osmanthus x burkwoodii. the foremost prominent kind here, it’s a cultivar, not a species plant.
Our garden also has several sorts of a fall-blooming species native to Japan (and Taiwan). Osmanthus heterophyllus (formerly O. ilicifolius, known in Japan as hiiragi) grows here in Areas I and O. it's many common names, including Holly Leaf Osmanthus, Holly Tea Olive and False Holly. People often mistake it for a real holly (Ilex), but its spiny leaves are arranged “opposite on the stem” – unlike Ilex, which has alternating leaves. “Heterophyllus” means “having the foliage leaves of quite one form on an equivalent plant or stem.” Although the younger leaves are coarsely spiny, mature leaves are “entire” (simple in form, with smooth margins). Both kinds are thick, waxy in texture, and dark green.
O. heterophyllus blooms in late September and October, with intensely fragrant flowers that are mostly hidden by the foliage. They’re small, white, tubular, 4-lobed, and held in small clusters. Fruiting is rare . It grows at a moderate rate to about 8-10 feet tall , with an upright habit when young, spreading wider at maturity. In time, it can become treelike -- to fifteen or more feet tall. Hardy to USDA Zone 6 (average winter temperature, -10 to 0 degrees F.), it’s widely planted in Japan -- both pruned as a hedge and as a specimen shrub or tree during a mixed planting, allowed to retain a natural form. it had been first mentioned, within the 8th century, in Japan’s oldest surviving historical document , the Kojiki.
Tumblr media
Holly Leaf Osmanthus burkwoodii grows in sun or part shade, and prefers moist, fertile, well-drained, acid soil. However, it tolerates drought, stressful urban conditions, and somewhat alkaline soils. Unless plants are stressed, it's no serious pest or disease problems. It’s not problematic here within the geographic region, but can become invasive within the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S.
Minimal pruning is required. Remove misplaced, dead or diseased branches in late spring and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.
