TW: Self hatred, insecurities, identity issues
Olivia struggles with her racial identity a lot as a teenager. It's the 80s so her being mixed and her parents being an interracial couple (black and white) is still considered taboo by a lot of people so she feels like she doesn't really fit in that well. Like a lot of mixed girls, she was told her interests were "too white" for some people and "too black" for others. She doesn't like her natural hair and she doesn't like wearing braids either but she does it because she knows it makes her Desiree happy as she wants her daughters to embrace that. Olivia was bullied for her hair, her skin tone, her features and she hates herself for that.

Decorative Paper Sunday
Earlier this week we shared some typography from the Winter 1998 issue of Matrix, a typographic journal celebrated both for its content as well as its production and design. The above pattern paper samples are also from Matrix 18, printed at Whittington Press in Gloucestershire County, England by John and Rosalind Randle in an edition of 825. John and Rosalind founded the press, named after their Gloucestershire village, in 1971, producing the first edition of Matrix in 1981.
The first collection of papers (image three above) accompanies a reprinting of the obituary of painter and designer, Enid Marx, written by art historian and scholar of architecture and design, Alan Powers. The selected papers represent four of the five Marx-designed papers published by the short lived Judd Street Gallery (run by Powers and his wife, Susanna), selected from unpublished pattern blocks in Marx’s studio. Power’s writes, “Marx’s genius for patterned design, more jazzy, risk-taking and lively than that of her male friends was as instinctive as perfect pitch.” Also included in this issue is an essay on the interaction of production and design by Marx, originally published in the February 1944 edition of Architectural Review.
The second set of pattern papers (image four) appear alongside a review of In Praise of Patterned Papers. The 1997 publication by Incline Press collects essays on patterned papers, some of which are reprinted classics like a 1927 Paul Nash essay from The Woodcut, with some newly commissioned for the book. Reviewer David McKitterick writes:
“This remarkable book, spoiled though it is with innumerable misprints, is both a monument to a passion and a collector’s piece in itself. Much of the writing in it has a fervency and immediacy that no cold-blooded historian could match. More than ninety tipped-in examples enliven the whole volume with a sense of immediacy that no reproductions could command, allowing one both to test the weight and quality of the paper, and also to gain a much better sense of the tactile nature of so many of these papers.”
You can find more on Enid Marx from our collection here.

In the Still of the Night: Javier Peña x reader
Tumblr media
(a/n originally this was a steve randle fic I cooked up once upon a sleepless night. but after re-reading it I decided to turn it into a javi one shot because pedro pascal owns my ass. this takes during season 2, specifically episode 6. Also for plot’s sake pretend you are a nurse who used to work with Connie)
Javier trudged up the small flight of stairs that led to the front door of the apartment building. It had been another late night stuck behind a desk. Another late night with a plethora of leads that inevitably led nowhere. It had taken the pot of coffee he and Murphy had been drinking to gradually turn into hot burnt bean flavored water for the two exhausted Agents to finally throw in the towel. Maybe Javier could convince (y/n) to let him steal some of the gourmet coffee she had stashed at his place.
Recently, he had taken to staying longer and later, trying desperately to weasel in the information he received from Los Pepes without causing suspicion. Javier knew he was on thin ice with Steve after that incident at the checkpoint when they were close to catching Blackie. It was a wonder his friend hadn’t let anything slip, but then again he knew Murphy was more inclined to let Javier deal with his shit on his own. Besides, he had told Steve he could handle it. Couldn’t he?
Javier signed, leaning his forehead against the cool wooden door to his apartment. How had he never noticed how truly exhausted he was? He felt heavy, weighed down by all that had been happening in Columbia lately. His feet felt like cinder blocks as he took a step back to unlock the door. The seasoned agent wanted nothing more than to eat, sip an ice-cold beer, take a shower, and collapse into bed. Maybe he would be lucky enough to sleep soundly with little to no nightmares. Undisturbed till his alarm would sound off early the next morning.
"Damn it", he groaned, searching blindly for his apartment key. He had forgotten to put it back on his key ring after he had made a copy for (y/n). He exhaled in relief, having found the piece of metal nestled in the pack of cigarettes in his breast pocket.
‘I told you to put it back on there! One day you’re gonna lose that damn thing for sure, and I promise I’m not giving you my copy to get in!’, Javier smirked imagining his girlfriend scolding him. Her voice would be tinted with laughter, her threat empty. The pair had each other wrapped around their respective fingers. There wasn’t anything (within reason) that the young nurse wouldn’t do for Javier. And when the used to be bachelor was told he was whipped he simply shrugged and said, “Listen, when you really care for someone you’ll do whatever it takes to show them that. (y/n) says jump? I say how high.”
Much to the surprise of his colleagues (Steve included),  Javier had moved past the honeypot method to get what he wanted from certain informants. And to add more to the surprise, (y/n) was very much aware of the man Javier Pena used to be. It never ceased to amaze him how open-minded she was. Most women would have run-away after being told of the things he’d seen and done in the field. “At the end of the day, you come home in one piece to me. But don’t think about trying that crap again while you’re with me.” she had said one night during one of their few late-night conversations.
"(y/n),cariño? You still here?", Javier called into the seemingly empty apartment. He stepped in, closing and locking the front door before moving towards the living room area where he threw his leather jacket over the arm of the cream-colored couch. All the lights were off, except the one in the kitchen. He turned on a lamp, the white envelopes sitting on the coffee table littered with some paperwork caught his eye. He’d deal with it tomorrow.
"Babe?" he called again, climbing the steps that led up into the kitchen. He glanced at the clock built into the stove, the neon green glowing numbers reading 12:30. He spotted a plate of food resting on the small circle table, and a pink sticky note stuck to the top. He smiled softly, wondering how she managed to take care of herself, her busy workday, and still make time to cook for him.
Javi,
I hope you came home at a decent hour. I’m still here, had a long day. You missed the dust bunnies I excavated from under your couch.
Love, (y/n)
It read, her neat handwriting taking up little space on the small piece of paper. Javier paused a moment. Dust bunnies? Had she cleaned his apartment? He took a quick look around the area laid out in front of him. Gone were the empty bottles and cups he usually left lying around. The thin film of dust that usually graced his small television screen was gone, and it actually smelled nice in the room. The musty male and cigarette odor had been replaced with the smell of cleaning products and a candle she had left burning on the stove. Placing the note down, he turned to blow it out; the time now read 12:40. Javier turned to the fridge, grabbed a beer and took his lukewarm dinner in front of the TV in the adjoined living room. Maybe he could take a crack at some of those papers still sitting out there.
[One hour later]
Javier woke with a start, the black and white static on the tv illuminating the room. He blinked blearily, standing up to stretch.  How long had he been asleep? He meandered over to the kitchen, disposing of his empty plate and bottle. The stove time now reading 3:00.
‘May as well just head to bed, no point in showering now.’ Javier thought, making his way into his bedroom, turning off the few remaining lights as he went.
He stood staring at himself in the bathroom mirror. Not necessarily enthralled with the tired, grumpy looking man staring back at him. The past few months had taken their toll on him, the bags under his eyes adding on a year or two. It didn’t help that  his vision hadn’t been up to par as of late either. He refused, however, to get glasses until absolutely necessary. He could already hear the jokes that would be made at his expense. “Having trouble in any other departments Pena?”
Rolling his eyes, he shut off the bathroom light and shivered as the cool ac hit his bare legs and chest. Clad in only his boxers, he moved out into the hallway, trudging zombie-like into his bedroom, his dark brown eyes taking a moment to adjust to the darkroom as he quietly shut the door behind him. Javier picked up on (y/n)’s soft breathing as she slept, everything but her head swallowed up by the thin white blanket on their bed. It was a wonder she had slept through the noise he had been making since he had gotten home hours earlier. She really must have had a long day. Ever since Connie and Olivia had left back to the States, the (y/h/c) nurse had taken more hours, helping to fill in the spot her blonde friend had left. And in some ways, maybe Steve had taken to staying longer to avoid an empty apartment. Something Javier had once been used to, but now the thought of having to start sleeping alone in his queen-sized bed made him cringe.
An orange street light filtered in through his blinds, casting a soft spotlight onto the bed, drawing him closer. The "spotlight" shone on (y/n), illuminating the soft unique features of her face. Her mouth slightly open as quiet snores slipped through. Javier yearned to freeze time. To simply lay in this lumpy bed, with the most beautiful kind-hearted woman he’d ever met. His mother had only been the one other woman who cared this much about him, and it hurt that couldn’t she meet her. Javi was sure she’d love the passionate young woman as much as he did. He crept closer slipping under the covers, curling his arm around her waist to draw her closer to his bare chest. He lay a soft kiss to the back of her head, the sweet scent of her shampoo clouding his senses. He was content.
“Javier? Is everything okay? What time is it?" the young woman mumbled her voice heavy with sleep, raising her head slightly to catch a glimpse of the alarm clock on the bedside table. 3:30 am.
"It's me, baby, everything is fine. Go back to sleep."
 "Okay. I love you."
"Love you too," the tired man said, kissing the back of her head as she fell back asleep. Javier lay awake for only a few moments more, finally succumbing to the slumber that was now his master.
Javier Pena knew that when the morning came he would have to return to that godforsaken office, and shift through the same pile of papers, and deal with the weight of his actions resting on his shoulders. But for the time being as he lay next to the love of his life in the fleetingly late hours of the night/early morning, he could pretend that he was just another man off the street, far away from Escobar, far from cocaine, and far from Columbia.
A reality that only existed within the still if the night.
(i hope you all enjoyed my first Javi fic....and I hope i didn’t write him too OOC. Let me know what yall think, and my requests are open! more work to come soon. <3 roach)

Joe Simpson asked his favourite British actors ‘what role have you always wanted to play but have never got the chance?’  he then creates a narrative painting of them depicted as their choice on a large wide format canvas.  These paintings are not just straight portraits, but show the actors in their craft, acting as a character that they’d love to play.  Joe says, ‘I think their choices are fascinating, and reveal previously unknown passions and motivations.   I’m totally open to interpretations of the question – it can be from an existing film, a book, a play, a short story  - the only stipulation is that it’s something that they haven’t done before – so that it’s totally new.”
The series has been over 5 years in the making, and will launch as a touring exhibition in 2020.  The first three dates have been announced, with more to come:
Stockport War Memorial Gallery – January 25th – March 3rd
Oriel Gallery, Theatr Clywd, North Wales – March 7th – April 18th
Alfred East Art Gallery, Kettering Museum and Art Gallery – May 2nd – June 13th
There are 10 large scale portraits in the series, each Oil on Canvas 135 x 60cm.
Joe has painted Paddy Considine who chose Randle McMurphy from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Matt Lucas as Don Lockwood from Singin' In The Rain, Warwick Davis who chose Philip Marlow, Michael Sheen as Max from Maurice Sendack's Where The Wild Things Are, Olivia Colman as Bess from Breaking the Waves, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Cleopatra, Mark Gatiss as The Phantom of The Opera, John Simm as Deckard from Blade Runner, Charlie Cox as Buster Keaton and Eleanor Tomlinson as Hilt from The Great Escape.

268 Directors and the end of the blog
This post marks the end of the Ask a Director experiment. I’m so grateful to all who have contributed, supported and engaged with it over the past six and a half years.
This blog was started at a time when I felt incredibly alone in the directing field. I had always been taught that a director operates solo, that it was a lonely career and above all, it was based on scarcity. This was a style of working and living that didn't fit for me. I wanted to talk to other directors about their practice and thoughts about the field, both national and international. This blog was started as a way to connect, to uplift other directors and to create a conversation about the changing field and practices.
It's surpassed all of these goals and brought me more joy than I can name.
I'm now at a moment where my practice and advocacy are taking different and exciting paths and it's time for me to put this site to bed. I remain committed to uplifting other directors, to talking about the practice, to flattening hierarchies, to opening doors for new ways of working, and leading rehearsal rooms, companies, and classrooms away from silos and vacuums. Featuring these 268 different directors was just the beginning.
I encourage you all to hire them (and others), advocate for them (and others) and choose to work in a system that values connection and generosity.

I was thinking about what you said about how Courtney and Shayne feature in a larger number of thumbnails than the rest of the cast and was also thinking what your opinion was on whether it carries on to the podcast as well. I counted how many times they feature and Courtney features 14 times, and Shayne 10 times, with the other most frequent guest (except Ian) being Damien with 5 appearances. Compared to Olivia, keith and Noah's 2 each I thought maybe it linked to the thumbnails. Idk opinions??
(re: this post)
AH i actually have a draft saved about smoshcast thumbnails! i never posted it bc i had a main point related to sh/ourtney, but my conclusions were based off of numbers that were still changing and i wanted smthn more accurate and solid.
this is a slightly different discussion tho, and i agree that shayne and courtney appear on more podcast thumbnails than any other non-ian fam member... except it’s also important to remember that they’re on the smoshcast more often than anyone else!
Tumblr media
these are stats about all the smoshcast videos on youtube as of august 12, 2019. here is the link to the google sheet if the pic above is too small. basically, the first four columns show which people were a part of which episode, whether or not they were in the main podcast thumbnail, then if they were in the highlight thumbnail (podcast highlights weren’t created until episode #8). everything here is pretty self-explanatory, but feel free to hmu if any of y’all have any questions.
the fifth rightmost column has stats/calculations i was able to make using the stats on the left. i didn’t make stats for everyone, but i think i chose a good mix.
for example, the “ian, main thumb” numbers say 11/19, 57.89%, which means out of the 19 times he hosted an episode, he was in the thumbnail for 11 of them (aka he was in the main thumbnail 57.89% of the time he could’ve been there). “ian, high thumb” does the same thing with highlight episode thumbnails, except it only takes into account the main episodes that actually have their own highlight episode. (also, there was one extra highlight video for the randl episode, so ian and damien’s stats reflect that as well.)
i think one might ideally expect to see the same percentages for everyone across the board, but it makes sense why that’s not the case.
Tumblr media
with frequent speakers like ian, courtney, and shayne, i’d say there isn’t much of a pattern about who appears more, especially when you view highlight thumbnails as the same caliber/importance as the main episode thumbnails. there are some extreme high and low percentages, but i still feel it all balances out. maybe courtney has the most consistent percentages between main and highlight thumbnails, but they’re numbers that aren’t concerningly high, imo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
now the percentages of special guests or “rare appearances” are not as varied, nor as low as ian, shayne, and courtney’s (usually). that’s because these guests are not in as many episodes as those three. since they’re rare speakers, they’re more likely to be in the thumbnails of their respective episodes, even when shayne or courtney is in the episode with them.
with the smosh pit, shayne and courtney are a part of many videos, moreso than most of the other cast members, so it makes sense that they’re on the thumbnails. it becomes a problem when there are many other people in the video with them and they’re still clearly chosen to be featured on the thumbnails over the others.
i think in comparison to that, this is a pretty fair set-up. i don’t think they have a perfect system of choosing who’s on the thumbnail for smoshcast, but i think it’s definitely good enough.
maybe just more keith all around, though, lol

Dear Soda
Summary: While serving in Vietnam, Sodapop receives a letter from a loved one. (One-shot)
Warning: Curse words
Word Count: 1,634
It was a torrid afternoon, the white sun blazed down on the young privates and the scorching heat hung over them like a thick blanket they couldn't remove. Men sat in the shade of foliage, trying to no avail to cool themselves down as they opened long awaited letters from their loved ones back home. Sodapop Curtis sat barebacked against a large tree next to his best friend of thirteen years, Steve Randle, as both men read their letters from families and friends. For a few minutes, the soldiers could forget the relentless heat, focusing only on the words on the pages.
"Man, Two-bit's crazy" Steve chuckled as he finished his letter from their mutual friend. Sodapop gave a lopsided smile and agreed, pulling out a photograph from his kit bag.
"I sure do miss everybody back home" Soda admitted with a sigh, looking at the picture of their gang from a few years back.
Steve pat Soda on shoulder with a sweaty palm. "Yeah, me too. But just think, five more months and we're done in this shithole and we'll see 'em all again" Soda grinned, knowing his friend was right and thankful that they had both been able to stay safe for so long. He didn't have a doubt that they could make it five more months.
"I guess you're right" He said, wiping sweat from his upper lip before putting the photo back.
"Shoot, you know I am" Steve replied, running his hand over his shaved head, a force of habit he hadn't shaken since the days of actually having hair. He missed it now and then, it reminded him of home.
"You get a letter from Evie?" Soda asked after a moment of silence, reaching for the last letter from his fiancée, Olivia. Steve nodded, a smirk on his face as he wiggled his eyebrows.
"Uh-huh, sent me a little picture too. That woman really knows how to cheer me up" Soda laughed and shook his head at Steve, flicking him on the temple lightly. "You get a letter from Liv?"
Sodapop nodded a reply, waving the letter for a moment to show it off, his own smirk plastered on his face. "Maybe Liv sent a picture too"
"I'll cross my fingers, give me a peek if she did" Steve joked as he stood up and stretched his limbs.
Sodapop playfully kicked at his friend, laughing as Steve swiftly dodged his foot. "You wish, buddy"
"I gotta take a piss- don't miss me too much while I'm gone" Soda rolled his eyes as he watched Steve turn and stroll away.
"It'll be tough but I'll try my best!" Sodapop shouted after him, laughing as Steve held his middle finger behind him in reply.
Returning his gaze to the envelope he scanned his eyes over Olivia's neat cursive and brushed his fingertips over the writing. Still smiling slightly, he used his index finger to carefully open the letter and slowly began to read it.
Dear Soda,
This is a very difficult letter for me to write as I know how much I mean to you. I want you to know that I truly am honoured that you think so highly of me. I care very deeply for you and want you to know that you are an extraordinarily wonderful man who will make some lucky woman very happy someday. But that woman isn't me.
Being apart as much as we have had to be has proven too difficult for me. I wanted to tell you face to face but I don't think I could find the courage to tell you this if I were to look into your eyes.
It brings me a great deal of sadness to admit to you that I have fallen in love someone else. I've tried to push away and ignore my feelings for him but the harder I try the more I realise that you and I just aren't right for each other. The last thing I want to do is hurt you by cheating on you or lying to you. Nothing has happened between me and this other man but I'm worried that if things continue, my feelings for him will grow stronger and I will come to resent our relationship and the wonderful moments you and I have shared together.
I could have really fallen hard for you, Sodapop, but I'm not ready for the type of commitment you are.
After you proposed, I realised that being a wife so early in my life was not something I wanted or was ready for. I considered for a long time what it would mean to be a wife or a mother and I thought long and hard and knew in my heart that accepting your hand in marriage wasn't right for me.
You deserve better than me. Someone who will instantly know that they want to spend the rest of their life with you, rather than someone who just considers it.
I want you to know that nothing about this is your fault and that this is entirely a result of my own personal problems that I hope to overcome with time.
You are one of the finest men I have ever known and I know you will continue to be throughout your entire life. I appreciate that no amount of apologies or excuses will ever be adequate enough to alleviate the pain I am putting you through and I understand completely if you hate me for this.
You'll always have a special place in my heart Sodapop.
Please take care of yourself,
All my love,
Olivia.
Soda exhaled, misty eyed as he read the letter over and over again until he could no longer see the words. There was a heaviness to his heart that he had only felt a handful of times before, the weightlessness of love finally giving in to gravity. There was a pain in his gut worse than a punch, worse than anything he'd ever known, like the sun had actually burnt itself out. He couldn't believe this was happening, there had been no signs of doubt before. Soda thought back to when he proposed to her, it was the night before he had to leave for basic training. Olivia hadn't shown any signs of hesitation. Or had she? Was his mind remembering the evening differently because he had wanted to believe it so much? His mind searched through the memories he had of their time together in an effort to see how things had gone so wrong. Was it the ring? She said she didn't mind that he hadn't gotten her one, she knew he was saving for it, but had she lied? Had she always felt this way? If not, what changed? Why wasn't his love ever enough?
Soda began to sob, his body shook as he muffled the sounds of his cries by clasping his palm over his mouth. It wasn't that he didn't want the other soldiers to see him cry; he had seen them cry on multiple occasions. No, it wasn't that. He didn't want their pity, didn't want their clumsy commiseration or a couple of their cherished cigarettes in a poor attempt to console him. He didn't want to lose their trust, he had seen how privates who had received similar letters had stopped caring about their lives and become reckless. No one wanted to be around a soldier who was wild with grief and unpredictable. The first few days after a letter such as this was received was frightening for every man around the recipient because they knew he was a ticking time bomb. It was also disheartening, it affected all soldiers because it felt like a loss of love and respect for their cause. These letters left everyone with a lingering feeling of worthlessness.
Most importantly, he didn't want to hear them disrespecting her in an effort to make him feel better. Soda knew it sounded stupid but he couldn't hate her. It would take him weeks, months even, to start feeling bitter, if he ever could. He couldn't stand to sit by and listen to them talk in a hateful way about her now, he still loved her far too much.
The sound of approaching footsteps was enough to shake him from his thoughts and he quickly turned to wipe his face with his sweaty t-shirt that had been lying beside him. Soda knew it was Steve without having to look up, you spend enough time with someone and you get to recognise their footfall.
"I ain't tryna kid you, Soda. I just saw a huge fuckin' snake back there. Now I'm not talking about the one in my pants. I mean an actual fuckin' snake, with eyes and shit- Soda? Bud, you alright?" Steve jogged the remaining distance to his friend's side and dropped to a sitting position, turning to look at him and taking Soda's hand from his face. "What's wrong?" A flood of realisation washed over him and all he could do was stare into his friend's bloodshot eyes. "She ended it?" He said, it was more of a statement than a question but Soda nodded nonetheless. "That fuckin'-"
"Don't, Steve" Soda breathed, staring into his Steve's eyes, a pleading look in his own. "Please, don't" Steve nodded in understanding and carefully placed a sweaty arm around his best friend in a half-hug, ignoring the heat radiating from them both.
"Alright, man, sorry" The two young privates sat like that for a moment before Steve noticed Soda's shaking hands as he held the letter. Removing his arm from Sodapop's shoulders, he reached over and pulled out a pack of Kools from his kit bag, taking one out he looked at Soda and asked rather apprehensively: "Do you want a cigarette?"

Hey I'm the one that ask about the boys naming their kids, I wanted it to be what they will name their kids like for example Bianca may... Something like that :)
This took awhile, but it was worth it. 🌸
Darry: He’d want to name his daughter something mature and delicate like “Amelia” and his son after him and his father so that there could be a Darry Curtis III.
Sodapop: He’d want to name his kid Jellybean or somethin’ like that, just like his dad would. But, he likes cute & subtle names like “Katie” or “Alice” for a girl.
Ponyboy: A name he spent a lot of time thinking about, making sure it fits. “Aurelia" for a girl and “Michael” for a boy. (Aurelia means gold and Michael is Pony’s middle name)
Dallas: He’d probably let the mother of his kids decide, but if he had to, then something off the top of his head like “David” or “Olivia”
Johnny: Something meaningful like “Scarlet” (a character in Gone with the Wind) or “Andrew” (based on Johnny’s middle name)
Two-Bit: He’d want to name his son “Dunno” so that when the teacher calls on them, it’s a huge joke but the mother of his child probably wouldn’t be too fond of that, so he’d settle for “Elaine” Matthews or “Kyle” Matthews.
Steve: Probably tryna name his kid after him like “Steve Jr.” or “Stephanie” and the mother of his child is just like “🙄”, but he’d settle for “Lisa” Randle or “Jacob” Randle.
