Hello! I was wondering, how long does it usually take for the “Sort CAS CC Alphabetically” script to start organizing your cc? When I try using it, it’s always stuck processing the first file for a really long time. I can’t tell if it’s just supposed to take a long time or if it’s just frozen and there’s a problem :/

Heya! Unfortunately, I've never had that problem; it should start working almost immediately if it's all set up properly.

It sounds like you're not the only person with this issue, though; there are some folks in the comments section of the Utility's MTS page that mention the same thing. Unfortunately, the original poster hasn't responded since those comments were made, so I'm not sure how to help you out here. :(

I'll put a tutorial, some thoughts, and my general use-cases for this utility under the cut, hopefully this will help some people out! (It's likely to be very long and rambly, so be warned! I'll try to make it as easy to understand as possible, however!)

If you're having trouble making the "Sort Custom Content in CAS Alphabetically" Utility by barteke22 work, read on!

First of all, you need to download AutoHotKey; the utility won't function without it.

Then you need to unzip the "SortCAS_AHK_V2.2.zip" download and place the folder in a safe place (I have it in my documents folder with all my other Sims 4 Modding Programs/Utilities/Tools).

Next you need to open the SortCAS 2.2.ahk file by right clicking on it and choosing "Open with… > Notepad" (or whichever simple text editor you prefer).

When you open it for the first time, you need to configure it, so the utility can find the folders and programs it needs. Look below:

(Feel free to enlarge, then right click on the image and open in a new tab to see a larger res version. This goes for all other images in this post.)

So what you're looking at is the .ahk file open in a text editor (in my case, notepad). The Configure section is clearly marked by the dotted lines.

You'll need to replace the "FolderPath" with the path to folder you want to sort (In the image above it's set to sort my "Eyelashes" folder). Be sure to read the notes right next to it: The folder path must end with a backslash(\) for the utility to work properly.

You can easily copy & paste the path to the folder you need by opening it and right clicking on the address bar at the top of the window, and selecting "Copy address as text".

Just paste it in that section, replacing what was already there. Make sure it ends with a backslash(\), and make sure you don't remove any spaces before or after the Folder Path.

You'll need to do the same for your CASTools.exe file location, just below where you edited your folder path.

If all you're doing is sorting one big folder per CAS category, you're all set! Just place that folder path in the "FolderPath" line and you're golden.

However, if you're like me, and you have a bazillion extra subfolders for one CAS category, like a separate subfolder for every different CC hair creator, you'll want to move on to the next step: Editing the orderCAS number.

Scroll down in the .ahk document in Notepad until you find this line:

(You can find it more easily if you Ctrl+F and type in "orderCAS".)

This is the number you want to change to get unique CAS sort numbers in your various folders. If you don't change this number, the utility will give every folder you sort with it the same sort numbers as all the others.

If two CAS items have the same sort numbers, they'll appear randomly near each other. So if all your hundreds of CC have the same sort numbers 0.001-0.052, then all the items with the same numbers will group together randomly; it'll be the same kind of chaos in-game as before you ran the utility.

So! To make sure the numbers don't overlap in the same category, you need to change this setting, giving each folder it's own set of numbers.

To make it easier on myself, I created a .txt file with the names of my subfolders, and the numbers I've given them to serve as a handy reference. Here's an example:

(These numbers refer to hairs; Female T-E hair, Female Child hair, etc. These are how they're organized in my mods folder.)

So I assign each folder it's own unique sorting number, and make sure to change the "orderCAS" value to that number before running the utility when I want to sort that folder.

[Please disregard the number of digits after the decimal point in my reference; my programmer husband helped me edit the .ahk file to give me more digits with which to sort to. The original .ahk file will only sort to three digits past the decimal, hence the starting value of "0.001". Try not to use any more digits than that, as the program will not sort to that degree of granularity.]

Make sure you save the file after you edit any of it! (And make sure it still saves as a .ahk file, not a .txt!)

So! You've got it all set up and all the numbers filled in… then what happens? How does it actually work?

It will first remind you that your mouse will be blocked while the utility is running, and also that F9 will allow you to stop the utility and gain control of your mouse at any time.

It will then bring up a progress bar window while in the background it opens CASTools to start sorting your files. If everything's been set up correctly, it should then start working.

The utility works by taking control of your computer's mouse for a while, and doing all the opening, clicking, changing values, and saving for you. It does that by using pixel coordinates; it moves your cursor to the right spot in the CASTools.exe window using the coordinates, clicks to activate that point (such as the "Order in CAS" box in CASTools), enters the sort number, moves the cursor to the "Commit Changes" button, clicks, then to the "Save" button, clicks, then back up to the "Select" button at the top to click and open the next package file in the folder to do it all over again.

So it does make your computer unusable, because it takes control of your mouse, so you can't do anything while the program runs. If you ever need to stop it for whatever reason (whether you need your computer again, it freezes, or it comes across an error it can't move past), you may do so by pressing F9 (or Fn+F9, however your keyboard is set up). This will immediately stop the script and it will ask you if you want to continue; click "No" to exit. (I don't think there's any point this program can stop that will harm any of your package files, so don't be afraid of doing it if you need to!)

If it freezes at the "Processing File 1 of XX…" dialogue with nothing happening in the background, I'm unsure how to help you, other than to make sure all the set-up is correct and try again. Download a fresh .ahk file if you need to to make sure you haven't accidentally changed anything you weren't supposed to.

(If you still can't get it progress at this point, send me another ask/message with as much detail as you can about the problem, maybe with a link to the copy of the .ahk file you're working with, and I'll do what I can to help you troubleshoot! Keep in mind, I am not an expert, so I might be just as confused as you are. ^^; )

So with all of this, the utility still might not work perfectly, and this is because of the nature of Sims 4 CC: over the course of many years of development, and many different creators, and many different standards for how CC is made, some of the files you open, especially older files, might throw errors in CASTools. In my experience the most common one is a "FlagValue" Error:

The Sims 4 has updated and changed so much over the years, adding more and more features, that sometimes old .package files just doesn't have the information the game wants, such as proper Occult tags for later expansion packs.

This is what the CASTools window looks like when you open a package in it:

See that list of Property Flags in grey on the left? Sometimes the "Flag Value" will have a bonkers thing listed in it: the one I saw all the time was "*High Chair*" under an "OccultAllowedForRandom" flag. 🤨 This is the result of old CC using outdated flags that now point to something different in the game (I'm not entirely sure of the mechanism here), and CASTools does not like it.

If the .ahk utility opens an old package file in CASTools with this issue, CASTools will throw up an error about an improper flag value or something. The .ahk utility is not set up to deal with these kinds of errors, so it will stop and be unable to continue if it encounters one.

The only way I've found to fix this is to edit the package manually to fix the cause of the error before proceeding. Press F9 (or Fn+F9) to stop the utility, click "No" in the dialogue box that opens to close it completely, and edit the improper Flag Value in CASTools manually to something that won't make CASTools scream. (If it's an "OccultAllowedForRandom" flag the right one will probably be one of: Mermaid, Vampire, or Witch. Choose whichever one isn't already covered by the other flags.) Depending on the error CASTools throws that makes the .ahk utility pause, it may be a different fix; use your best judgement for how to proceed!

Once you've made the edit, click "Commit Changes", then "Save Package" to save it, then exit CASTools. After that, return to the .ahk utility to run it again. It will probably ask you if you want to skip already sorted files; choose whichever option you prefer.

Hopefully, it'll get to that file in the list and sort it successfully with no errors this time. X)

Because the Sort Utility is such a basic, hacky sort of thing, it's not set up to deal with the wide range of errors possible in the years of Sims 4 CC making and game updates. It's smart enough to click "ok" past "Missing Mesh" errors and the like in CASTools, but some other errors that require manual intervention will need just that before the program can sort them correctly.

You'll also need to pay attention to the resolution info in the description of the original MTS post: Because it uses mouse coordinates to work, it can only work with a certain screen resolution, otherwise the pixel coordinates will be off. Make sure your resolution is 1920x1080 (and that your taskbar is at the BOTTOM of your screen) before running the utility; otherwise the mouse clicks will be off, and it's not likely to do anything it was meant to.

[If you have the knowledge you can edit the .ahk file to suit your own screen resolution, but it will require changing the mouse coordinates to whatever matches what appears on your screen. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out if you have the time/ability to learn and suss it out, but I won't be able to help you with it. ^^;]

Man, this sounds like such a lot of faff… honestly, though, it's not that much work. You edit the Folder and CASTools paths in the Config section, you put in the numbers you want it to sort to, then you run it. That's it. If everything's working fine it should do all the work for you.

It does help to have an idea of what it's doing, though, so you can more easily diagnose problems. It took me a little bit of trial and error to get it working the first time around. Make sure you read all the instructions on the original download page and in the .ahk file carefully and it should work out.

Again, you're still having problems, feel free to send me an ask with as many details as you can about your error, and I'll see if I can help! But as I say above, I am not an expert, so I may not be able to do any more than what I've said here. X)

Anyway, this utility has saved me SO MUCH WORK, and made my game SO MUCH MORE organized since I started using it, so I think it's incredibly useful and valuable for anyone who cares about such things. Good luck, take care, and happy simming! <3

I'm using a combination of autohotkey and lua macros for this bullshit; I've got a dedicated key on my auxilary keyboard for typing [ ‚ ] , among other great hits such as ☭, ß, ♠, ♡, ♣, ♢, —, and ‽. Oh, I should mention I have an auxilary keyboard, something I strongly recommend everyone use for those weird characters that you're always typing but don't just have on your keyboard.

I picked up a fancy programable keyboard to use as an auxilary keyboard, but you can and probably should just use a normal ass keyboard since all the programing is gonna be done using third party software and not the keyboards built in programmability functionality.

This is my current keyboards set up.

I'm putting more details under the read more for those that want to set up something similar.

My setup relies on Lua Macros and Autohotkey as mentioned, and I used this tutorial to help me set it up, but because linkrot is a thing and because I did some things differently, I'll be detailing specifics about my code, which is thankfully short starting with Lua.

LUA MACROS

First thing, comments in lua are made with a double hyphen "––"

lmc.minimizeToTray = true lmc_minimize()

These two lines just get the program out of my way and into my tray when running. Comment them out while working on your code so that you can actually edit it easier.

--lmc_print_devices() lmc_device_set_name('MACROS1', "ID_XXXX") -- lmc_assign_keyboard('MACROS1')

These three lines work towards figuring out your keyboard's ID and assigning it to the variable. start with the first line uncommented and the second line commented. Replace the four Xs in line two wit the ID printed by line one when you run it than swap the commenting on the first and second line. The third line is some black-magic bullshit that helps Lua work if it's being obstinant. I've never needed it but you might. If you're having difficulties try uncommenting it.

This line makes it so that Lua only recognizes when the keys are pressed, and ignores them while they're being held down. Comment out as your use case requires.

filewrite = io.open("output.txt", "w")

This line opens the file output.txt and names it w. Because we will be writing to this file, you'll need run Lua in administrative mode, something which the tutorial linked above doesn't do.

Lua doesn't have anything as convient as a switch, so you have to daisychain ifelses to assign all your buttons. The last line prints the value of any key that hasn't been assigned. To assign keys, press them then add their if else.

Each line in the ifelse chain writes a value to the file based on its index.

filewrite:close()

This line closes the file you're reading from. Close your fucking files Kevin.

fileread = io.open("output.txt","r") print("\nThe contents in the file are: ") print(fileread:read()) fileread:close()

This is debugging code to make sure the file is being written to correctly. It can be commented out.

lmc_send_keys('{F24}') end )

Lastly, these lines press the F24 key, which you're keyboard probably doesn't physically have but your computer understands as a thing that exists, and then ends the macro.

In most programs, F24 doesn't do anything, but if you're running into problems you can change this. What it does here however is signal to the autohotkey script I have running that it's time to send a keystroke.

AutoHotKey

My autohotkey script is simple based on the fact that I'm only using my aux keyboard to type unicode characters. If you're using it for anything more complex than that, your script will reflect that.

#SingleInstance Force

This is the running environment. It just means that only one copy of this script can run at a time.

F24:: FileRead, Input, C:\Users\REDACTED\second-keyboard-master\LuaMacros\output.txt FileReadLine, Output, C:\Users\REDACTED\second-keyboard-master\AutoHotKey\translation_P.txt, Input+1 if (output!= "") SendInput {U+%Output%} return

This is one forth of my entire script, and the other fourths are the exact same thing except "F24" is replaced by "+F24" (shift), "^F24" (ctrl), and "!F24" (alt), meaning it registers it as a different key and the highlighted P in the file_name "Translation_P.txt" is replaced by S, C, and A to match the other file names.

Now, let's break this down.

F24::

This is the hotkey. It means that the script is listening for the F24 key to be pressed, which on my computer only happens when I use my Auxilary keyboard and Lua presses it.

FileRead, Input, C:\Users\REDACTED\second-keyboard-master\LuaMacros\output.txt FileReadLine, Output, C:\Users\REDACTED\second-keyboard-master\AutoHotKey\translation_P.txt, Input+1

I have a txt file on my computer at that location which is very simply, 48 lines long, one for each key, I'm programing. The lines are either blank meaning the key hasn't been assigned, or they contain a unicode code point of the character I want assigned to that key. I have four seporate translation files for whether I'm typing a character with no modifier, shifting, ctrling, or alting. Though you could have up to eight files for each combination shift-ctrl-alt, or sixteen files if you include the win key as a modifier: I thought that was overkill, but maybe it's not enough kill for you, in which case Autohotkey can discriminate between left and right modifiers (left shift/ right shift, etc) meaning 2⁷ files if you really need that many fucking keys.

if (output!= "") SendInput {U+%Output%}

This checks if the line which was read was empty. Then if it wasn't, it sends the unicode character with the value in that line. So if I hit the key 24 on my aux keyboard, it sends the character with the unicode value in the twenty-fifth line of the document (201a) which is [ ‚ ].

return

This indicates that the hotkey's script has finished, and that autohotkey shouldn't keep executing code.

Caveats and Conclusions

The caveats to this set up is that Lua Macros, as it's creator is VERY QUICK to tell you, is a finicky program that sometimes doesn't work perfectly. I'll often find myself typing f‽ because Luamarcros failed to block the keystroke on my auxkeyboard but still managed to send the rest of the code. The creator doesn't know why it happens. If it happens just try rerunning the program, and if that doesn't work try relaunching lua (remember to launch it as an administrator).

The benefits of this set up is its very easy to add, subtract, and move around keys. In my original set up, [ ‚ ] wasn't a character I'd assigned a key to because I hadnt thought I'd use it. Adding it in took a total of three minutes, two and a half of which were spent figuring out it's Unicode code point, and the last thirty seconds were spent opening translation_p.txt typing it into line 25 and saving the txt file. I didn't have to reload lua or my AHK script, it just worked immediately.

This is a great thing that I reccomend everyone do, because we all have those characters not on the standard keyboard that we need to type often enough that it gets annoying. The lower half of the keyboard's just whismical characters for me: the top half where I've ä, æ, ö, ü, ß, é, ñ, Ä, Æ,Ö, Ü,É, and Ñ: that's proper quality of life improvement stuff right there for someone half fluent in german, living in america, who plays magic the gathering.

How To Grow Your Blog Traffic Using Tumblr

That’s the social media dream, right? To set it and forget it, and gain thousands of followers without even trying or thinking about it?

To be honest, getting 8k followers on Tumblr in 5 months without ever logging in was never my intention.

Tumblr was distracting me from my “real work” so I thought I needed to take a break. I actually forgot about my account. Then months later thought I’d check up on it. Imagine my surprise when I saw how much it had grown.

The last time I was on I only had 500 followers. I spent that entire day studying analytics, reblogging cool pictures, and optimizing my Tumblr page to drive traffic back to my website.

Though it seems like my Tumblr blew up on its own, there was actually a very important seed that I planted, and several strategies that I implemented, that made it’s growth possible.

Let me show you how I did it. I’ve broken it down into 7 easy steps.

Steps to grow your Tumblr account

Choose your niche

The very first step to growing your Tumblr blog is to narrow your niche. Blogs that have specific topics tend to do better and attract more attention.

Colorful Gradients and Ghost Photographs are both examples of a super narrow niche.

But you also want to make sure to choose a niche that you’re passionate about — I mean that’s kinda the whole point in the first place.

Your niche determines what sort of content you will be posting.

Also, you don’t necessarily have to use the same exact niche as your main blog or website (if you have one). For example, my main blog Launch Your Dream is about following your dreams and it’s mostly focused on how to start a successful blog.

My Tumblr blog, Eli Seekins, is also about following your dreams but is more focused on travel, adventure and lifestyle.

The trick is to find something narrow that you enjoy.

Know your brand

Your Tumblr is an extension of your brand, whether you are just starting one or already have one.

You want your brand to have a clear message. You need an edge — something that other brands don’t have. You need to know your values, what you stand for, and your mission.

That way you will always know what sort of content to post. Your brand will be clear and thorough, and people will get it.

When people get it, they have a better chance of connecting. And when they connect, they have a better chance of engaging and even sharing.

Knowing your brand also means knowing your audience. Who are you trying to reach? What sort of content do they like most?

(My brand is about following your dreams, travel, adventure, and lifestyle. I’m reaching out to young people who want to do something big with their lives. I value things like working hard, taking risks, and making a difference in the world.)

Here are 3 brands that are crushing it on Tumblr:

All three of these brands know who they are and who their audience is, and they do a great job of translating that over to their Tumblr.

Follow popular accounts in your niche

A great way to find good content to repost, and to find out what people in your niche are responding to, is to check out the popular blogs in your niche.

It’s pretty easy to find them. Just look for the blogs who are posting a lot every day, who get lots of notes, and have a large following.

To get started just search for different keywords.

And check out the different accounts.

I’d follow anywhere from 50 – 100 blogs right away.

Reblog quality content 1 – 3 times a day (by using your queue)

One of the greatest tools in Tumblr is your queue.

You can fill it with up to 300 posts, and set a certain amount of those posts to automatically publish throughout different times of the day.

In my opinion, your queue is perfect for filling up with loads of content to reblog (reblog means to repost someone else’s content on your Tumblr blog). And I just schedule my original stuff. That way I’m always sharing content, and I can schedule my content to post whenever I want and at peak times.

I often experiment with reblogging anywhere from 1 – 50 posts a day.

For those 5 months that I didn’t log into my account, when I gained 8,000 followers, I had about 200 reblogs in my queue set to share 1 photo a day at 9pm. And I wasn’t even sharing any original content.

Typically the bigger your audience grows the more content you can post. I don’t recommend sharing more than 3-5 posts a day until you get your first 1,000 followers.

You can find good content to reblog on the popular blogs that you’ve followed, by searching keywords in the search bar, or just by checking out your dashboard feed.

Then all you have to do is hit the queue button.

You can change your queue settings over in the menu on the right.

Include relevant hashtags

Hashtags in Tumblr are the keywords that make your posts searchable. They’re very important for getting your content seen.

You can find popular hashtags by doing a search and seeing what people are looking for.

And by typing in different tags in a post to see what people are using.

Make sure that you use tags that are popular and relevant to your niche AND relevant to the content you are tagging. Just so you know only the first 20 tags that you use are actually searchable (source).

Use a call to action

I was surprised by how few people were using call to actions when I first started implementing these strategies. Since then, it seems like some popular accounts in my niche have caught on though.

That’s because call to actions are powerful. It’s how this post has gotten almost 15,000,000 notes, by simply saying “pass it on”.

It’s great if your posts get a lot of attention, but if your viewers aren’t doing anything after they see your content what’s the point? Don’t you want them to take action?

All of your posts should include some sort of call to action, whether it’s to bring viewers to your Tumblr blog, to your main site, or somewhere different — or even to just get likes and reblogs.

At first, I felt kinda weird putting call to actions on other people’s content that I was reposting, but it’s ok to do if you do it right. And it can make a big difference. Just make sure to be genuine. For example, don’t repost someone’s original photo and use it to promote your ebook or video course. That’s kinda sleezy. But leaving a call to action on reblogs to like, reblog, or check out more of your posts is totally ok and can increase your engagement and get you more followers.

Warning

Always ensure that the creator of images you share retain credit. It can sometimes be difficult to to figure out who originally shared something on Tumblr – reblog’s usually link to the person who you reblogged it from. But we recommend trying to credit the original author if you can. And whatever you do, never remove a credit link. And try to share original content when you can – you’ll get more traction if you do.

Use keyboard shortcuts to supercharge the speed of your workflow

I’m gonna be honest, filling up your queue with hundreds of posts is a lot of work — it eats up your time. I even considered quitting Tumblr for good because of how much time it takes.

One of the things that bothers me the most is that you can’t copy paste hashtags. You have to type each one in individually. And if you’re using 5 – 20 tags per post and have 300 posts in your queue…. that’s a lot of typing hashtags.

It took me a little bit of time to figure out, but I have my Tumblr workflow down to a system. I can’t even imagine how much time it saves me.

It’s all based on Mac Mastro (I use a mac, but if you’re a pc guy check out AutoHotkey or Quick Macros). This app allows me to save multiple different presets of titles, tags, and call to actions into keyboard shortcuts. So all I have to do is press a button combination on my keyboard and everything is automatically typed out for me. That way I don’t have to keep typing the same things over and over again hundreds — even thousands of times.

I’ll show you what I mean…

Here’s an example of my workflow, hotkeys, and scripts that I use.

1. Find a post to reblog

2. Add a call to action with a hotkey

Mac Mastro allows you to save multiple different actions to one hotkey, that way when you press the hotkey you can just click whichever one you want to use, then it types it for you.

3. Format your CTA and add a link if appropriate (again using a hotkey)

4. Add tags (using a hotkey)

5. Add to queue and you’re done

The whole process takes a matter of seconds and dramatically decreases the amount of time it would normally take.

To create a new hotkey with Mac Mastro:

1. Go to File and then New Macro.

2. Add a new hotkey trigger. And then press whatever keys you want your hotkey to be.

3. Add a new action

4. Search for and click “ Execute an AppleScript”

5. Insert your script

Here are examples of the different scripts I use in Mac Mastro.

This is what I use for all my CTAs and links.

Just put whatever you want your hotkey to type between the quotes after “keystroke”.

Tags are a little more tricky because you need the script to press enter after each one. That’s why there are delays and extra keystrokes.

And that’s it. Whenever you hit your hotkey it will type out whatever the script is set to type.

Extra Tumblr tips

Don’t try to sell

At Least not at first when you are trying to grow. You can’t focus both on selling and getting followers at the same time. And honestly it’s pointless to sell when you don’t have an audience yet.

Plus people get on Tumblr to be entertained. People choose Tumblr over places like Facebook and Linkedin because it’s hip — it’s cool and artistic — it’s where the trend setters and young people go.

And they’re very good at detecting and filtering the content that they want to see. If they see your post, and get any sort of sleazy vibe, they’ll scroll past it without thinking twice.

Use Tumblr as a creative place to experiment and try new things — and especially as a place to post original content.

If your goal is still to sell, think of Tumblr as the top of your funnel, where you create awareness and grow relationships, not where you make your pitch.

Get a custom theme and domain name

Tumblr has a big creative vibe. Creativity and good design is important to a lot of its users. On top of that, Derek Halpern, Hubspot rated the design as the:

A study done by Elizabeth Sillence that found 94% of the participants who distrusted a website distrusted it because of its design.

That’s why getting a good looking and practical theme is important.

Using a custom domain name isn’t necessary. It’s more of a personal and brand choice. And it’s definitely not going to make a big difference when you first get started. But if you want to stand out a little more, go for it. I didn’t start using my personal domain name until my blog caught on and started gaining momentum.

Create original content

Tumblr is a great place for content curators. But anyone can reblog other people’s posts. If you really want to stand out, post original content specifically for your audience on Tumblr that aligns with your brand. It’s also a good place to share your content from other platforms.

For example, I take photos of all my hiking and travel adventures. I pick out individual photos, write small 100 – 500 word micro blogs to go with them, and post one daily on Tumblr.

And I don’t post them anywhere else. I also post daily original quotes that align with my brand.

And I also share all my YouTube videos on my Tumblr blog, as well as all the articles that I write.

Oh and make sure to add a source url of your blog or website whenever you post original stuff, that way you’ll get credit for it. And it will help drive a little bit of traffic for you. Plus getting your links shared on social media will help build your SEO.

So Tumblr is great for 3 things: reblogging quality content, posting original content, and sharing your content from other platforms.

Like I said though, creating original content specifically for Tumblr, is what makes certain bloggers stand out from the rest.

And posting content that’s visual — like photos, videos and GIFs — is a must.

If you’re afraid to post original content because you don’t think it’s good enough, don’t be. Everybody has to start somewhere. You’ll get better the more you create and the more you post. If you look at the original content I first posted on Tumblr, it looks horrible compared to what I’m posting now. Every great blogger and content creator started out bad — seriously. They just practiced and increased their skill as they went along.

So get to work.

Drive traffic

I’m still learning the ropes when it comes to using Tumblr to bring traffic to your main blog or website. But since revamping my Tumblr, linking back to my site, and writing this article, Tumblr has brought 56 visitors to Launch Your Dream, which is more than Twitter, Facebook or Pinterest brought for me during that same time.

One thing to note is that I’m focused on growing my Tumblr following right now, rather than driving traffic to my website. So only something like 1 out of every 50 of my Tumblr posts link to Launch Your Dream. Almost all the rest link back to my Tumblr blog. How much traffic do you think I’d get if I linked to my main site more?

Maybe we’ll find out later.

Only time will tell how effective my new Tumblr will be at driving traffic to my website. But I’m excited to grow this new following, and to see how it impacts my main blog in the future.

Hey idk if you already posted it but what do you use to type in the IPA? Do you use a script or just copy paste it from a reference or something?

Part 1 - The boring answer: I was on mobile when I made that last post so there I was using Gboard, which has an IPA keyboard as one of the international keyboards (I actually use Swiftkey as my main keyboard because I prefer it, but Gboard has good support for other languages so I use it for IPA, Cyrillic, and Greek)

Part 2 - The more interesting bit: For typing IPA on desktop I use Hotstrings from AutoHotKey.

This is pretty simple to set up, although you do have to think of a replacement string for all of the characters you want to use (I don't have the entire IPA set up, just the characters I commonly use)

Looks like this sort of thing (I'll put the entire thing under the cut)

Basically what this means is that if I type any of those strings after the first :: then press tab, it gets replaced with the corresponding string after the second ::

The bits at the top allow you to define what the ending character is (just tab here, but you can add others like enter or something if you want), and certain rules, like the O means it doesn't actually write that tab character, and the ? means it will still work inside another word.

Here's the entire IPA part of my hotstrings script if you want it, basically just install AHK, put this into an .ahk file and run it

Scripting tutorial for Tags and Captions

I often mention that I use a AutoHotkey scripts for adding the tags and captions to all my uploads, and in this post I will explain how I actually do it.

Getting started:

First of all, this tutorial only works with a windows PC. I don’t know of any equivalent programs like this for Mac, Linux or mobile.

Step one is downloading the “current version” of the program: AutoHotkey and install it. Now you can get started with scripting.

You can write scripts in any text editior, I personally would recommend Notepad++ but window’s regular notepad will do the job just fine.

Creating a Script:

To write your first script, simply right click on your desktop and select “New > AutoHotkey script, then right click on the new file and select “edit script”. Alternatively you can just create a “.txt” file and change the file extension to “.ahk”.

A newly created AHK script will already have a few lines of text in it, for a script as simple as the one we’re writing you can ignore that text.

Please note: anytime you make a change to your script you have to save and reload it for the changes to take effect.

Hotkeys and Hotstrings

This is what a normal hotkey command looks like:

F6:: Sendinput, hello Return

In this case, the F6 key is the hotkey, designated as such by the “::” behind it. In the next line we have the actual command that get’s triggered by the hotkey, in this case it is “Sendinput,” which will send whatever text you put behind it, in this case “hello”, you can also send other key presses by putting them into these: {} brackets, for example adding {space} which will have the same effect as you pressing the space bar.

Please note: anything you want to send with the sendinput command needs to be in the same line as the command itself. “Return” tells the script that whatever action your hotkey is supposed to perform ends here which allows you to add the next hotkey or whatever in your script.

I would also recommend to add a modifier key such as control or alt to your hotkeys so you can still use the keys original function. To use alt as a modifier key simply add a exclamation point to your hotkey like this: !F6:: Now this hotkey will only trigger if you press alt and F6 at the same time.

A much more detailed Explanation for hotkeys and modifier keys can be found here Hotstrings Hotstrings basically work the same as Hotkeys with the main difference that you use a word or phrase to trigger the a command instead of a key. Your trigger phrase or word get’s designated by putting “::” in front of it and behind it. The command will trigger as soon as you hit the space bar or the enter key once you’ve written the word or phrase, however it will not trigger if you just keep writing, so for example if you write “what” instead of “wha” the command will not trigger.

There are many, MANY commands other than “Sendinput” you can trigger, but for now, this is all we need for what we’re trying to do.

Tagging and caption script for tumblr

This is a simplified version of what my command for captioning and tagging Berserk posts looks like, Berserkk with double k is the trigger word so this command doesn’t trigger every time you write the word Berserk:
