"Snow flurries began to fall and they swirled around people's legs like house cats. It was magical, this snow globe world." ~ Sarah Addison Allen
"SNOW STORM OVER MANHATTAN, New York, USA" by Florian Innerkofler, 2012
Arty-Fact: One of the most notable aspects of Florian’s career has been his willingness to do more than a spot of globetrotting in search of the assignments that have helped fuel his creative practice.
This eagerness helped put him in touch with photographic luminaries including Andreas H. Bitesnich and Greg Gorman during the earlier stages of his career. It is a tendency that sustains him today, as he tackles projects in such wide-ranging corners of the world as New York City, Tokyo, the remote Arctic Circle, and almost anywhere else one could care to mention.

Hi! I'm not sure if you're taking requests but i wanted to ask if you could write one with Pedro where they're dating but reader is not famous, she is actually a young artist that runs a small business on Instagram. And everyone is shocked that he's with her, but he is so proud of being her boyfriend and is VERY supportive of her both in private and in public. That's, thank you 😊💕
the actor and the artist - pedro pascal x artist! female reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: you’re hosting your first ever art show and the paparazzi make you wonder if you’re good enough.
Word Count: 1.4K
Content Warning: age gap relationship, insecure reader.
Note: I fking love this request @rosaliedepp *kisses your forehead* I hope you love it. 🫶🏼💜
You remember where you first started, selling your artwork on Etsy, your prices were so cheap they undermined the hours of hard work, pain, sweat and tears that went into them, still you only managed to sell 3 works in about 12 months, you were stumped. Feeling like you should just give up, like it was a lost cause and your art wasn’t really as good as you originally thought it was. Until it happened.
You thought it was a scam at first, these scammers were getting crafty these days and the Pedro Pascal, messaging you on Etsy wanting a custom piece? Come on, didn’t seem likely and you weren’t stupid. You remember asking him to DM you on Instagram, his offical page, giving the email your username on Insta and within minutes receiving a direct message from the Pedro Pascal’s offical Instagram page that at the time, had 2.4 million followers, the white tick surrounded by the blue circle was confirmation it was really him and not some bot, or scammer.
He had been generous in his compliments on your works, even suggested making a business Instagram account to gain more traction, within the hour of messaging he had placed an order and left a very generous tip, he had even followed you and kept in contact regularly upon the arrival of his artwork, you figured it was because he didn’t trust you after he had sent that much money.
It was the opposite of what you thought that kept him talking with you, he thought you were sweet, talented and had real potential and knew he could help you where you needed it; not lacking in talent but recognition. If people actually saw your artwork, people would buy them. And they did, once they saw that Pedro had uploaded an image of your artwork in his house, that he followed you, your page blew up overnight, and you had Pedro to thank for it.
Which leads you to the present, two years later and 12 months of you two officially being a couple, even though things were fairly ‘new’ for the two of you, people had suspected things had been going on for longer. People of course had said their two cents online and you opted to ignore it.
Here you were in the cold evening of New York City, in a gallery room that was cleared just for your artwork, which would be showcased then auctioned, you had heard some big names were invited, ones in which you were terrified to see, let alone meet.
“You doing okay sweetheart?” Pedro’s voice scared you, pulling you back to reality as the room was half filled with people, something you’d failed to notice in your dissociative state. You offer him a smile as he hands you a glass filled with champagne.
“A bit nervous, hoping this will help.” You take a sip, your red lipstick that matches your ruby red silk, spaghetti strap dress, smears on the rim of the glass, you clutch your purse as a last resort for stress relief, feeling the tension build as more people arrive.
“I’m shitting myself, what if they don’t sell, what if they don’t like it? What if they don’t like me?” Your rambling makes Pedro chuckle, he steps towards you, his matching burgundy suit presses against your dress clad skin. His free hand caresses your hand and your hair tickles his fingers as you lean into him.
“They’ll be stupid not to love you, or your artwork. You’ve got this sweetheart.” You look at the genuine look on his face and can’t help but fall in love all over again, this man was truly a blessing in your life.
“You’re right, I’m powerful and wonderful and a fucking great artist. To us baby.” You clink your glasses together before throwing your head back, swallowing the liquid for courage before walking to the stage that had a microphone and your most iconic artwork on the wall behind you.
You’re standing in front of dozens of well known celebrities, but the champagne gives you the courage to smile at them as they watch you with wondering eyes. “Thank you all so much for joint us this evening. It’s truly an honour to host this event and to have you all here. Just a reminder that 35% of all purchases goes to the highest sellers choice of charity.”
The group cheer as you welcome them, pleased by your selflessness to give away money to donate to charity, Pedro is standing by himself off to the left of the stage and you give him a sweet smile.
“I wouldn’t be here without my biggest supporter, he’s changed my life for the better. This is the biggest moment of my life and thank you all for joining me along on this journey. The auction begins in 15 minutes so please don’t go anywhere. Stay and enjoy as long as you like, have a wonderful evening everyone.”
The applause goes straight to your head, people clapping and cheering for you as you walk off the stage, meeting Pedro at his side and giving him a kiss on the cheek, he doesn’t mind that you leave a lip shaped lipstick stain on his skin.
The auction is intense, your latest piece was the biggest success, it was sold for $360,000. That to you, was insane, you had earned that much money on one artwork. The years of hardworking was finally coming to pay off, not to mention one charity of a buyers choice was going to have received a very hefty donation.
“I can’t fucking believe it, that was insane. Thank you so much for coming with me, I couldn’t have done it without you.” You muse as you’re locking up the store, Pedro blushes at your compliment. “You did this all yourself sweetheart, money can’t buy talent.”
You shiver as the cold air hits your bare shoulders, the skin forming goosebumps immediately, your teeth are chatting at the freezing temperatures, curing yourself for not bringing a jacket. Pedro takes off his suit jacket, leaving him in his long sleeve-white button up dress shirt as he wraps the jacket around you, the smell and warmth of him bring you back to reality. The warmth holds you in its grasp.
“You didn’t have to do that, thank you.” You look up at him, thankful for the kind gesture. “Of course I did sweetheart, let’s get you home.” The perfect moment between you was spoiled as you see and hear paparazzi come swarming and shouting in your direction, probably after seeing the event posted online.
“Hey Pedro Pascal! What’s it like dating someone not talented on your level? Is it because you want a normal life?” The man snaps pictures of you and Pedro together, holding hands and Pedro shielding you from the cameras as the flash is blinding you.
“She is more talented than me. She’s an incredible artist, not that I have to justify it. Please leave us alone we’re very tired.” Pedro takes your hand and you try to walk away to get to his car which was parked right outside of the gallery, was it a good idea, no. Was it convenient, yes.
“What’s it like dating someone significantly younger, do you think she’s dating you for the money?” Pedro opens your door and puts your seatbelt on for you, before shutting the door and turning to the men following him.
“She’s the most genuine person I’ve ever met, not that it’s any of your business. Goodnight.”
He turns and makes his way to the car, starting it and driving off away from the flashes that blinded his eyes only moments ago. He notices you’re quiet, too quiet.
“Are you okay?” He seemed to be asking that a lot lately.
“I don’t know. They’re just mean, I love you Pedro, I do. I just don’t know how you deal with that- it’s so invasive and just horrible the things they’re saying about me, about us.”
His hand rubs your bare knee as he drives, his eyes not leaving the road until he comes to a red light mere streets from your shared apartment, “don’t listen to a word they say. They’re just looking for a reaction. If you’re happy then we’re good. I know I’m the happiest I’ve ever been with you.”
“You always know the right things to say Pedro.”
“I gotta keep my girl happy, don’t I?” You can’t help but smile at the comment, he truly was a blessing.

MAX VERSTAPPEN ᝰ.ᐟ₊ ⊹ - calls you schat or liefje - has an obsession with your legs. loves having them in his lap when you're cuddling or wrapped around his waist - his love language is physical touch! he's a man of few words so it's small touches like a hand on your back or a quick kiss to your hand that let you know he's there and how he feels - max will do anything for you and he cannot help but spoil you. you barely have to mention something once before he's driving to the store or ordering it online for you. nothing is too big or too small for him to get for you.
max's music taste is... limited? so anytime you're driving anywhere, he's more than happy for you to have aux! he loves discovering new artists through you and with you and anytime you make him a playlist he always listens to it pre-race. of course he has to let everyone know that his amazing love made it for him. to which they usually reply "we know max, we heard the first time." (really they think it's sweet that he's so dopey for you)
he literally supplies you with all the redbull you could ever want! sometimes he 'jokes' that you're only with him for that reason but a quick kiss to his cheek has him blushing and flustered and the thought has left his head. speaking of blushing and flustered, max loves when you play dangerous games with him. sliding your hand higher and higher up his thigh at dinner before sneaking off to the bathroom with him.
max is obsessed with watching you come apart underneath him and he puts as much determination and passion into making you cum for him as he does into his driving. he loves how fucked out you look and he can't get enough of gently holding your throat and telling you to open before spitting, relishing in the way he feels you swallow under his hand. he also can't get enough of watching you in the mirror. bending you over the sink, putting you on your hands and knees on the bed, bending you over against the hallway wall; anywhere there's a mirror, max is sliding into you from behind and whispering filth into your ear as his hips roll into yours.
he loves jetting off to city breaks for the weekend with you when he can; new york, paris, seoul, budapest, prague, tokyo, florence, krakow, chicago, seville, nice; your passport is full of stamps and stickers from your trips with him. you've started a scrapbook together with a postcard and a polaroid of the two of you in every city you've been to!
he loves taking you to various art galleries and museums in the countries and cities you visit and he's become surprisingly good at being an instagram bf and taking aesthetic pictures of you in galleries and exhibits. max loves watching you as you look around, the way your face scrunches when you're focusing, the way your lips move as you read the placards, the way you excitedly tell him all you know or you've read about the exhibit and the way you're moved by the things you see. cosy date nights are a must with him whenever he's home and most nights (whether wild nights out or dinner dates at home) end with you cuddled into his side on the couch and the cats on his lap. it's his ideal evening and he won't tell you yet but he plans on hopefully making it a permanent fixture in his life soon.
max loves your passion for life and your passion and drive for the things you love, even if he doesn't love them in the same way or understand them. he learns so many new things through you and with you. he loves the way that you light up his life and make him feel warm. max swears he could never win another race for his whole career and he'd still get that world champion feeling just by looking into your eyes.
"schat, what do you think about going to paris next weekend?" max asks. you giggle and look at him leaning against the bedroom door frame as you lie on the bed, with jimmy curled up on top of your feet and sassy cuddled into your side, "max!" you point at the still half-unpacked suitcases at the foot of the bed, "we just got back from prague!" he shrugs, seemingly un-phased by your argument, "your point is?" "we can't go away again! what about the cats?"
max sighs and crosses the room to plop down onto the bed next to you, sassy glaring at him as he accidentally shifts her from her cosy spot at your side, you stroke her back absentmindedly as she takes up a new spot on your stomach, "we can ask lando to cat-sit!" you roll your eyes with a smile, max is grinning like a child, "you've already booked the tickets haven't you?" "nooooo..." "max." "maybe..." "baby!" he pouts at you and you can't help the way you laugh, leaning to kiss his cheek, "you're trouble, you know that?" he gently pushes sassy and jimmy out of the way and they almost huff at him before stalking out of the room as he rolls on top of you, pressing a dangerous kiss to your neck, "you love that I'm trouble liefje..."

Threads of Power: Lace from the Textilemuseum St. Gallen
This well-illustrated book edited by Emma Cormack and Michele Majer accompanied an exhibition at Bard Graduate Center gallery and was named best art book of 2022 by the New York Times. It is a serious study in multiple chapters by various authors covering the rise of lace as an industry in early modern Europe, going through the centuries and the different traditions and countries, up to the modern era. If you are interested in the development of lace, you will find it fascinating. It is being sold at a substantial discount online when I last checked.
Here you see a woodcut from 1556 that offers up a pattern for lace; then a needle-lace and bobbin-lace collar which may be date from 1600 and or 1880, which is the most intriguing dating; a portrait from the chapter on how lace showed up--stiff and regal--in Spanish portraits in the 16th and 17th; lastly bobbin-lace coverlet from Brussels which has palm trees as well as the more common flora.
The exhibition can still accessed online here and it offers many images as well as some video of lace-making: https://exhibitions.bgc.bard.edu/threadsofpower/

enjoying art in a physical space is so much more unfiltered and opens me up to enjoying things i wouldnt normally take the time to give attention to; when i was in new york i visited this olfactory exhibit which by nature cannot be replicated digitally and it was a fascinating experience, i also went to this exhibit that had a lot of art i'm certain i would gloss over if i saw it online but in physical form i felt much more of a relationship with it simply because i was existing in the same space as it, surrounded by a finite number of art in a gallery makes me consider each piece with a lot more thought regardless of my personal tastes

National Museum of African American History and Culture: Afrofuturism: A History of Black FuturesAfrofuturism: A History of Black Futures explores the past, present, and future of this dynamic concept in an exhibition that features the various people, unique themes and radical artistry that have given voice to it. Featuring hundreds of objects and images with several multimedia displays, this exhibition explores the history of Afrofuturist expression and culture through literature, music, art, film, fashion, activism and more.
U.S. National Archives: Black Arts Movement (1965-1975) The Black Arts Movement was a Black nationalism movement that focused on music, literature, drama, and the visual arts made up of Black artists and intellectuals. This was the cultural section of the Black Power movement, in that its participants shared many of the ideologies of Black self-determination, political beliefs, and African American culture. The Black Arts Movement started in 1965 when poet Amiri Baraka [LeRoi Jones] established the Black Arts Repertory Theater in Harlem, New York, as a place for artistic expression. Artists associated with this movement include Audre Lorde, Ntozake Shange, James Baldwin, Gil Scott-Heron, and Thelonious Monk. Records at the National Archives related to the Black Arts Movement primarily focus on individual artists and their interaction with various Federal agencies.
Google Arts & Culture: African American Art: Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Era, and Beyond African American Art: Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Era and Beyond presents works dating from the early 1920s through the 2000s by Black artists who participated in the multivalent dialogues about art, identity, and the rights of the individual that engaged American society throughout the twentieth century.
National Gallery of Art: Black Art & Artists in Our Collection Explore works from Black artists across centuries, mediums, and geographies, ranging from 19th century still life painter Robert Seldon Duncanson to modern and contemporary pieces by Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Alma Thomas, Sam Gilliam, Kara Walker, Hank Willis Thomas, and more.
Smithsonian American Art Museum: African American Art SAAM is home to one of the most significant collections of works by African American artists in the world. These artworks span three centuries of creative expression in various media, including painting, sculpture, textiles, and photography, and represent numerous artistic styles, from realism to neoclassicism, abstract expressionism, modernism, and folk art. From a rare group of photographs by early African American studios to an important group of works by self-taught artist Bill Traylor to William H. Johnson’s vibrant portrayals of faith and family, to Mickalene Thomas’s contemporary exploration of Black female identity, the museum’s holdings reflect its long-standing commitment to Black artists and the acquisition, preservation, and display of their work.
NYPL: Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Art and Artifacts Division The Art and Artifacts Division collects, documents, preserves, and interprets art and artifacts by and about peoples of African heritage throughout the world. Fine and applied art and material culture objects from the seventeenth century to the present are collected, with emphasis on the visual arts of the twentieth century in the United States and Africa.

The Amazing Nina Simone She was left out of Civil Rights history, erased by jazz critics, and forgotten by most Americans because no one knew how to categorize her greatness. But throughout the 1960s, Nina Simone was both loved and feared for her outspoken vision of Black Freedom. Her musical proclamations like "Mississippi Goddam", and her iconic style created an alternative voice that continues to empower with its unrelenting appeal for justice. Now, a new documentary reveals the real Nina Simone through over 50 intimate interviews with those who best knew the artistry and intentions of one America's true musical geniuses. With new insights into her journey from Classical Music and the segregated American South, Nina's legacy is chartered all the way to the South of France where she finally found freedom.
JazzJazz has been called the purest expression of American democracy; a music built on individualism and compromise, independence and cooperation. Ken Burns follows the growth and development of jazz music from the gritty streets of New Orleans to Chicago's south side, the speakeasies of Kansas city and to Times Square.
Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child Director Tamra Davis pays homage to her friend in this definitive documentary but also delves into Basquiat as an iconoclast. His dense, bebop-influenced neoexpressionist work emerged while minimalist, conceptual art was the fad; as a successful Black artist, he was constantly confronted by racism and misconceptions. Much can be gleaned from insider interviews and archival footage, but it is Basquiat's own words and work that powerfully convey the mystique and allure of both the artist and the man.

Summer of Soul (...or When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentary, part music film, part historical record, created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture, and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). The footage was largely forgotten, until now. This documentary shines a light on the importance of history to our spiritual well-being and stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past, and present. The feature includes concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension, and more.
Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People The first documentary to explore the role of photography in shaping the identity, aspirations and social emergence of African Americans from slavery to the present, Through a Lens Darkly probes the recesses of American history by discovering images that have been suppressed, forgotten and lost. Bringing to light the hidden and unknown photos shot by both professional and vernacular African American photographers, the film opens a window into lives, experiences and perspectives of Black families that is absent from the traditional historical canon. These images show a much more complex and nuanced view of American culture and society and its founding ideals. Inspired by Deborah Willis's book Reflections in Black and featuring the works of Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simpson, Anthony Barboza, Hank Willis Thomas, Coco Fusco, Clarissa Sligh and many others, Through a Lens Darkly introduces the viewer to a diverse yet focused community of storytellers who transform singular experiences into a communal journey of discovery – and a call to action.
Black Art: In the Absence of Light At the heart of this feature documentary is the groundbreaking "Two Centuries of Black American Art" exhibition curated by the late African American artist and scholar David Driskell in 1976. Held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, this pioneering exhibit featured more than 200 works of art by 63 artists and cemented the essential contributions of Black artists in America in the 19th and 20th centuries. The exhibit would eventually travel to the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and the Brooklyn Museum. The film shines a light on the exhibition's extraordinary impact on generations of African American artists who have staked a claim on their rightful place within the 21st-century art world.

everything you lose is a step you take
Name: Summer Lee. Age and Birthday: 28 / March 17th, 1996. Gender and Pronouns: Cisgender female, she/her/hers. Romantic and Sexual Orientation: Pansexual. Occupation: Independent concert photographer and photographer at The Vault and Blue Harbor News. Birthplace/Hometown: Manhattan, New York. Time in Blue Harbor: Three years. Neighborhood: Cardinal Hill. FC: Chase Sui Wonders.
Biography
* Summer was born in bustling New York City, the youngest daughter to ambitious, workaholic parents. In the Lee household, both Summer and her sister were held to the highest standards, even from a young age.
* Summer always felt like she was living her life in shadows, hidden in the background of her older sister’s success. She was always quieter, gentler, more of a dreamer. Those were all things that were looked down upon, especially with the ideas of who she was supposed to be that were imposed by her parents. Her love of art and music were fine as long as they didn’t get in the way of a real career. It was always a spin into something that turned it into a proper job: artist or photographer to gallery curator, musician into business manager, passion into something that meant lots of wealth. It wasn’t enough to like what she liked. She had to make herself into something or be deemed worthless.
* She was pretty complicit to her families wishes up until she hit university. She’d worked her way up into pre-med, just like mom and dad wanted, except that wasn’t her path. There was nothing about being a doctor that appealed to her. Her escape from all that? Concerts. What started as a musical getaway turned into a side gig, the photo bug that bit her long ago fully flourishing as she pocketed cash for some of her snapshots of the performances. It was enough that she started making an online name for herself, and it was while doing something she cared about.
* One day, Summer had gotten a DM from someone that worked at the House of Blues in Chicago and saw potential in her work, offering her an internship potentially turned job if all went well. In her mind, there was no choice. She had to do it. In her family’s mind, though? It was a bomb drop on any perfect daughter image of her they had. It was shortly after the subsequent blow up that she’d packed her bags and searched for the cheapest town within a reasonable distance of Chicago. Blue Harbor turned out to be just the place.
* Although it’s only been a few years, she’s starting to settle in and see Blue Harbor as a home away from home, or at least the home for her. As much as she hates how things went down, she has no regrets about her decision and has the highest hopes of developing her own version of family within Illinois.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Janet Gaynor (born Laura Augusta Gainor in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 6, 1906) was an American actress whose image was that of a sweet, wholesome and pretty young woman. She was notable for playing her roles with depth and sensitivity. She is "The First Oscar Winner" of the Best Actress award. Gaynor was not only the first actress to win the award, but at 22, was the youngest until 1986, when actress Marlee Matlin, 21, won for her role in Children of a Lesser God.
As a child, she began acting in school plays. Her family moved to Los Angeles, where her parents wanted her to pursue an acting career. She was initially hesitant to do so and enrolled at Hollywood Secretarial School. Her parents continued to encourage her to become an actress, and she began making the rounds to the studios to find film work. Her first professional acting job was as an extra in a Hal Roach comedy short in 1924, which led to more work in feature films and shorts.
Fox Film Corporation eventually signed Gaynor to a five-year contract and began to cast her in leading roles. By 1927, Gaynor was one of Hollywood's leading ladies. In fact, during the early 1930s, Gaynor was one of Fox's most popular actresses and one of Hollywood's biggest box-office draws. She continued to garner top billing for roles in State Fair (1933) and A Star Is Born (1937).
Despite being at the top of the industry, Gaynor retired from acting at age 33. However, she did return to acting from time to time with guest appearances on TV and films.
Aside from acting, Gaynor also became an accomplished oil painter of vegetable and flower still lifes. She sold over 200 paintings and had four showings under the Wally Findlay Galleries banner in New York, Chicago, and Palm Beach from 1975 to February 1982.
Gaynor had been in failing health and required frequent hospitalizations since a 1982 traffic accident critically injured her. At 77 years of age, two years after the car accident, she passed away in Palm Springs, California, her injuries being officially ruled to have caused her death
Legacy:
Was the first recipient of the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1929 for her performances in three films: 7th Heaven (1927), Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927) and Street Angel (1928), the only occasion an actress won one Oscar for multiple film roles; and nominated for another for A Star Is Born (1937)
Named as one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars in 1926
Listed by the Motion Picture Herald as one of America’s top-10 box office draws from 1930 to 1934
Awarded the Order of the Southern Cross for her cultural contributions to Brazil in 1979
Given a tribute by the American Cinema Awards for her outstanding contribution to the Arts 1983

“There is something in the New York air that makes sleep useless.” ~ Simone de Beauvoir
"The Walker, New York" by Markus Klinko, 2015
Series: Fashion & Beauty | Through The Looking Glass
Arty-Fact: Photography has long been a medium through which we can capture and immortalise moments in time, freezing them forever in a single frame. Yet, it is also a powerful tool for exploring the world around us and the boundaries of our perceptions. As The Mad Hatter from Lewis Carroll's "Through The Looking Glass" says, "In the gardens of memory, in the palace of dreams, that is where you and I shall meet." Similarly, Markus Klinko's photography allows us to enter a world of wonder and surrealism where the line between reality and imagination is blurred. Markus peered through his own looking glass, capturing images that challenge our notions of what is possible and offer new perspectives on the world we inhabit.

Title: Bahian Lace
Creator: David Driskell
Date Created: 1988
Copyright: © Estate of David C. Driskell, courtesy DC Moore Gallery, New York
I visited an online art exhibition from the Cincinnati Art Museum, and I saw this image which caught my eye immediately.
The theme of the exhibition is "Homeage: What was, is, to come". Here is the introduction of this image
David Driskell, an expressionist of nature and culture, spent his life centering his work around things he saw. Much of it represents a long-standing connection between African American history, the lands where those histories intersect and rest, spirituality, and acknowledgment of the land where he felt most free. He, like most artists, allowed his work to reflect his experience in those current moments, stamping his innermost thoughts and feelings at the time of creation. He refers to his desire to create artwork as a “spiritual urge within to fulfill (his) earthly task of making and creating (his) own beautiful world”.
This is an oil and collage on canvas piece, that deeply connects with African and African-American cultures. Driskell’s use of vibrant colors and intricate patterns often relates to traditional African textiles, making his work visually striking and culturally meaningful. He creatively blends these elements to tell stories about identity and history, offering a visual exploration of the African diaspora’s influence on art.

via FROM LINES TO COLORS at Perrotin Gallery online:
The mid-1960s corresponded to Alain Jacquet’s period of creative effervescence. He moved to the Chelsea Hotel in New York for a few months, meeting Alexander Iolas who exhibited a retrospective of his “Camouflages” in his Manhattan gallery in 1964: a photo of Leo Castelli and Roy Lichtenstein posing with Alain Jacquet in a camouflaged suit, this memorable vernissage continues. He also meets Andy Warhol with whom he shares a taste for photomechanical reporting and screen printing. It is not trivial that Alain Jacquet, who settled more permanently in New York from 1965 to 1967, felt an affinity with American Pop art.

Deep Twitter is the last space online. Everywhere else has been carved out by different subcultural enterprises into spaces "for" a certain kind of prescribed being. People who talk about making spaces "convivial" are just trying to rework the performative forms that everyone else is participating in, creating a kind of white-box art gallery culture that doesn't make sense to regular people.
Sometimes I think of this as the end of the learning-based internet, and the beginning of the identity-based internet. This transition happened sometime in the mid-2010s, and only showed up on everyone's radars in 2020 when every Substack writer was suddenly interested in identity. It accelerates into 2022-2023 or so, after which all content is identity content, designed to express who you are, or "who you're tryna be".
Early bloggers, which included people like Evan Williams (Medium, Twitter) and marketing-types like Seth Godin, relied on the advantage that their format was more agile, more concise, spoke more directly to audiences than magazines. Twitter doubled down on that by making content even shorter. But now the race to the bottom is over; there are no more direct forms of communication than Twitter and TikTok, and now that those forms of communication have entered their extractive phase, we're seeing everyone drift in different directions. Everyone seems to have a magazine in New York because that's a tried-and-true way to control a context where you can do sensemaking.
Medium design is interesting again. Any new mediums or new spaces probably have to actually think about format again. I'm interested in Tumblelogs because they combine many of the best parts of Twitter with the potential to work like Letterboxed or Goodreads. Maybe there's a medium that looks like NYRB that happens because of all these magazines people are writing and reading.
