I don't usually post about One Piece (even if I would love to post about it more) but One Piece lately has been nothing but incredible & this latest chapter has reinforced that thought I had about this arc since it started...
...but the reason this time is different from seeing characters you haven't seen in years enter the action or taking the front stage in the story over the Straw Hats.
It's about this panel.
Tumblr media
One Piece has never really been a scary manga, it has never scared me before until this panel. It is just terrifying to look at... We had great villains in OP before & for many different reasons but there hasn't been one villain (at least for me) that has been frightening just by the thought or sight of their mere presence like Im has. We know that they are the king of the world at this point, that is terrifying on it's own but that's not just what is terrifying here even if it still factors in the fear aspect of that panel.
No, what is terrifying here is that they look like a literal predator here, their eyes watching you (which are also very creepy looking), ready to strike at any point. Im unlike other villains so far, even the more powerful or serious ones in the series, means business, but like ACTUAL business. Like we had examples of what they are capable of, like what they did with Lulusia, they are deadly & you understand that very well. They want to stay in power & will go to any length possible to stay in that power. They even feel different from the Five Elders who are already threatening in their own way, Im doesn't look like they would make as much compromise or show mercy as the Five Elders could. They feel like a true threat in the story.
& the fact Im looks like a living shadow also plays in that aspect that they are untouchable and you can't quite get what they are. Are they even human or some other race or being in One Piece that we currently know ? It's just impossible to know because there is really no features from that character that can give us a hint about what they are. Almost supernatural in a way, and I don't mean that in a good way.
Im just gives me the creeps & you know the story is getting serious when they appear at some point in the story. & the fact we know Cobra died (which we know Im is definitely behind it now) yet I can still get frightened by their presence speaks level about Oda's talent as a storyteller.
Edit: To add to what I said:
Tumblr media
The fact that some of the gards in the Pangaea Castle dissapear, clearly because of Im & in whatever room they were at the beginning of the Reverie, adds to the walking mystery aspect about them. No one apart from a very few people know about their existence or some people are straight up thinking it's a legend & all of it is not real. They are even a threat to their own allies or people serving under them.
Im has been there looming all over the story since the beginning, & the first hints of their existence was during the Dressrosra arc when Doflamingo was talking about the secrets he knew about the World Government. But there's probably other hints that Oda putted out there that we haven't even noticed yet... It lets you know how much influence they have on the story & how big of a deal they really are to be prepared for that long and for so many years by Oda.

Gotta give it to Mjosgard, he has his head on his shoulders. Man keeps protecting Fishman island to the best of his power.

About the Nefertaris and Vivi’s future
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I liked the Arabasta arc back when it ended and hoped we’d see Vivi in the future, but I didn’t think she’d become an important character again.
...
I stand corrected. Maybe I should’ve realized that back when the Nefertaris were revealed to be one of the 20, meaning Vivi could’ve been born as a celestial dragon...
...Anyway, so, what happened to queen Lili? When Cobra says that she isn’t mentioned in any historical documents after the founding of Arabasta, we see a question mark (along with an exclamation point) from the elders. Does that mean they didn’t know about this? Or are they just baffled about why would Cobra ask about something so long since past?
Tumblr media
At first, I thought this was what got Cobra killed; after all, “D” is a taboo name. One must not talk about “D”, it’s dangerous. But-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...I was wrong, again. This is obviously the real reason; Cobra shouldn’t have seen that. Now the question is who killed him? Someone from the government, obviously, but we have three choices: Imu, the elders and a third party. Imu would be an obvious choice since he seems to have some personal grudge against the Nefertari family, not to mention it was him whose secret got out, but the reason I think it might’ve been someone else was how Cobra was killed. When we see Sabo standing over his body, it doesn’t seem badly beaten up; it’s more like he got stabbed or shot once, and that is something I think might not be Imu’s style, considering what happened at Lulucia.
Back to the grudge that I think Imu has for the Nefertari family. Has a bitterness of Lili not becoming one of the 20 been passed down from generation to generation, ruler to ruler? Possible, but I think it’s more likely that Imu knew Lili personally, that he is over 800 years old. I’ve seen people discuss this before, and I feel like the way he says Lili’s name strengthens this theory.
How could he be that old? I see three possibilities:
1. He’s eaten some kind of long life/immortality devil fruit
2. He gained immortality from the power of the Ope Ope no Mi
3. He’s of some race that has a very long lifespan
Of course, it could be something else, but these three possibilities are what I came up with.
Tumblr media
Now, about Vivi: What will she do? She’s in hiding, safe for now, but for how long? What will she do in the long run, now that the WG is obviously probably after her head, even if not publicly? Well, I have an idea, occurring due to one of the most iconic scenes in the series:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I gave up on any true hopes of seeing Vivi go on an adventure with the crew again years ago, but now, those hopes are reawakening. Perhaps, Vivi will go to the crew in search for safety, either intentionally or by coincidence. Perhaps, she will search them out in order to receive help in exposing the secrets of the World Government (Dream Team Vivi and Robin, go!), or perhaps fate will bring them together while she’s at it. Either way, I’m starting to believe that Vivi will get on board once more.
Lastly, very random theory that’s probably complete BS: perhaps Imu is Nefertari Lili. Just an idea that occurred to me, but probably not... but c’mon, wouldn’t that be kinda awesome? First she declines from the honor of becoming one of the Celestial Dragons, leaving behind an exceptional reputation, and then goes and becomes even more than them in secret?
...Yeah well, Lili was probably killed by Imu/a previous king, but that’s one theory, too.

One Piece-Chapter Round-Up(Chapter 1084)
Tumblr media
Hai Hai! I’ve been a little MIA recently as I’d been a little busy finishing up a personal project of mine, but now I’m back in full force to do a whole lot of analysin’. But before we get to that I want to talk about how cool Luffy looks on the cover of Jump! That’s our Captain! Alright, see ya below the cut mateys!
Tumblr media
Oda cuts to the chase right away and has Bonney and Sabo meet. I’d been wondering what their roles were going to be as the Revo’s were the main force behind freeing Kuma. And Sabo’s already got the keys. This shows how Oda’s going to bridge the gap narratively between the two stories of Egghead and the Reverie. It’s the perfect way to leave us on a cliffhanger and transition to the Strawhats at the same time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If the theories of the “Shock” sent around the world from Egghead about it being a dissemination of information are true, Bonney could provide the context to Luffy and get him on her side through mentioning Sabo. Since they separated, they could get two different parts of the same puzzle that only we’ll be able to see. Though I do wonder what Sabo does after this since he’s accomplished his main mission. At the very least we know he goes to the throne room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oda also casually drops another mystery through the mention of the Phantom Room. Some guards were disappeared because they saw it. We know it’s not the throne room, that has it’s own name and is also referred to as the Empty Throne. And this room is called the Room of Flowers.
Tumblr media
So it could be one of these frozen rooms Imu was in while they played around with the posters of Vivi during the Reveries. But Imu seems to take a while to get down them, so how would a normal guard even get that far.
Tumblr media
I also want to take this moment to bring up some motifs around Imu. There’s a theory floating around that Im is a stuck in time queen of Alabasta. I like this theory because of the following ideas that seem to surround Im. One is the idea of things being frozen. They go into this vault that’s all cased over with Ice. And in the chapter they’re introduced in, there’s a heavy emphasis on the ever-lasting beauty of princesses through Vivi and Shirahoshi. With the way Oda connects ideas together, this lends a lot of credence to the Princess Lili theory. Not only that. But think about how the cyclical storytelling of One Piece has always surrounded the saving of Princesses. Nami was a blueprint (we can get to my crackpot theory on that one day) that was perfected through Vivi and Shirahoshi and Rebecca.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this perfectly leads into the discussion Cobra has with the Gorosei. First of all, let’s talk about how badass Cobra is, because he knows that death is on the line. People have been killed for saying much less and to the Gorosei no less. But focus on the contents of what Cobra is saying. Because if the Lili = Imu = Main Bad Guy theory is true, then Oda revealed the bad guy all the way back in Alabasta! If Lili didn’t join the Celestial Dragons then we all assumed she came back. Or back then we assumed the monarch of Alabasta just didn’t go up to Marejois. But we didn’t consider the possibility that instead of not joining them, the monarch actually ruled them!
Tumblr media
The Straw Hat Grand Fleet Represent! And Mjosgard. Who’s development I love. He’s also of the Donquixote family so I wonder if there’s some inherent pattern with them not being able to keep their Celestial Dragon status. Also Charloss gets another deserved beating, first from Luffy and now from his subordinates. It’s so cathartic. Though unfortunately, as it was earlier referred to as an “Attempted Murder” we know he’s not dead. Ya almost had him Leo! Also I just briefly want to touch on how badass Morley is. Karasu is my favourite but Morley is probably the strongest out of the four commanders. Not only did she break out of Impel Down, possibly even before Shiki, but she lead the infiltration into the territories of the God’s and held her own against an admiral.
Okay so one more thing that I’m sure has been talked about but I haven’t seen talked about is the fact that Imu’s name backwards is Umi, which means Sea in Japanese (Thank You Yu-Gi-Oh!). With the mentions of the secret treasure of Marejois and Imu’s name being related to such a big force in the One Piece world, she has to command some all powerful power, maybe even a sea fruit or something like that. Or hold some relation to why Devil Fruit User’s can’t  swim.
Tumblr media
Arriving at the last page and basically all throughout mentions of the Void Century, I always have one panel flashing in front of my eyes. This one:
Tumblr media
“The answers you will arrive at may be different from ours…” This statement always screamed to me that the answer of the true history will not be as clear cut as we wanted. As in the way that we see the Celestial Dragons to be villains might not be what’s actually reflected by history. While it is interesting Oda highlighted York’s greed right before this, I still think the Celestial Dragons could have had a good reason to take down the Ancient Kingdom. (If anyone’s watched TTGL, I’m thinking along the lines of the whole Spiral/Anti-Spiral thing if you know what I mean). And with the main bad guy having some relation to a sympathetic party, I feel like Oda is setting the stage for some real twists and turns. There are a few other options, such as Imu being in a love with Lili, and Lili leaving to start Amazon Lily (P.S. Imu could’ve totally done that in her down time and returned) or Imu being Lily’s child, but we still need more information. All this chapter leaves us with is more questions. And with a break week next, we’re just gonna have to wait.

Holy shit Cobra has some massive kahunas but that was such a dangerous thing to ask. Cobra must have thought he would die soon if he was willing to go right up to the 5 elder stars and just ask whatever the fuck he wanted like that
