Open Data Strategies of Real-Time Cities, 2017 - Research and Markets
Check out the latest post http://thenewsrabbit.com/open-data-strategies-of-real-time-cities-2017-research-and-markets/
DUBLIN–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The “Open Data Strategies of Real-time Cities” report has been added to Research and Markets’ offering.
This market insight is part of the Real-time Cities Research Program. In recent years, it has become evident that cities see an opportunity to stimulate economic growth by opening up their substantial sources of data to digital services innovators. To become true real-time cities, they strive to do more than simply publish existing information online.
Differentiation lies in the foundations they put down in terms of data strategy, governance structures, and partnerships. Historically, the city of Moscow’s smart city initiatives have received only moderate recognition. However, this is changing. Having attracted significant attention over the last couple of years, the Russian capital is establishing itself as a ‘must’ on the watch-lists of smart city observers, thanks to ingenuity and commitment.
Key Topics Covered:
1. Key Takeaways

What to do when you have bad realtime train position data from the railways company ? Plant cameras along the tracks and use image recognition to discriminate trains and refine arrival predictions: ▻http://svds.com/tensorflow-image-recognition-raspberry-pi
And what did they use for training data ? Trains, of course.

"we are working on a different project" - DP.LA
Dan Cohen is the Founding Executive Director of the DPLA, where he works to further the DPLA’s mission to make the cultural and scientific heritage of humanity available, free of charge, to all.  TAGS and ANSWERS with Dan Cohen on Heti Attila.
#PARTNERSHIP There are currently about 15 general partners--that is, content and service hubs. Content hubs have considerable materials themselves, and service hubs aggregate content from hundreds of smaller libraries, archives, and museums. When you factor in those institutions, the number of partners runs into the hundreds. We are already in talks with many other potential content and service hubs across the country.
#OWN CONTENT Not right now. This might be a feature in the future, but we need to come up with a system to handle any crowdsourced process, and right now the DPLA organization is relatively small.  #WORK By this summer there will be six people working at DPLA, with many others contributing skills, knowledge, and other important elements from outside of the organization.  #OPEN DATA Part of the reason we have an API and fully open data is that we cannot fully anticipate what developers will build on top of the DPLA. We hope to be surprised, and undoubtedly will be. Obviously there are some areas that developers will clearly explore--for instance, geolocated history. #EUROPEANA It presents the opportunity to begin to stitch together a global digital library, since we share a data model and are both very interested in seeing what we can do together. Indeed, we launched with a collaborative exhibit on emigration from Europe to the US. #GOOGLE Our hats are off to Google for what they have accomplished with their Google Books program. Clearly we are working on a different project; right now we do have many books but we have also have millions of cultural heritage artifacts that Google does not have. We are looking to build something more comprehensive, more networked (rather than holding the scans ourselves like Google, we point to our partners), and more open.

After delivering his address at the annual United Nations General Assembly meeting last week, President Obama dropped a tidbit of interest for open data advocates: he promised to produce an open source policy by the end of 2015.

This paper presents Open Data Kit (ODK), an extensible, open-source suite of tools designed to build information services for developing regions. ODK currently provides four tools to this end: Collect, Aggregate, Voice, and Build. Collect is a mobile platform that renders application logic and supports the manipulation of data. Aggregate provides a “click-to-deploy” server that supports data storage and transfer in the “cloud” or on local servers. Voice renders application logic using phone prompts that users respond to with keypad presses.
