as my local nature center is out of stock (potentially forever--/stares blankly at the wall), I have switched to using the Canadian roaster that I used for my parents' xmas gift last year for my coffee needs -- birds and beans.
it is certified as bird-friendly by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center (the specific criteria are kinda interesting), and is organic, fair trade, shade-grown, small family farms/cooperatives, compostable bags, etc.
the roasters have recently partnered with Audubon (their online bird guide is the best one out there) to sell within the U.S., donating a portion of the proceeds, which is convenient for me.
I'm trying the light and medium roasts. I'm still too scared of the Starbucks-ification of dark roasts, so I'm staying away from that for now. [their Canadian site still has a greater variety of roasts than the Audubon selections, so maybe I'll order directly from them in the future and just make a donation to Audubon myself.]
[I have a coupon if you want one]
[this is not an ad. I just like coffee, birds, and supporting charitable organizations and small businesses.]

Organic Coffee Benefits:
Tumblr media
Coffee is the second most popular beverage after water. It also happens to be the second top-selling product in the world after oil. There’s no doubt about it—coffee makes the world spin. Whether you drink it to wake up from the dead or down a mug (or three) before heading off to your night shift, it’s a key ingredient to living your boldest life
1-Organic Coffee Has more Nutrients Than Non-Organic
Due to the lack of synthetic chemicals added to the beans and nutrients in organic soil, organic coffee tends to have more vitamins and minerals than non-organic.
There aren’t a significant amount of macronutrients in coffee, but there are some micronutrients that most folks don’t get enough of in their diet. Notably, potassium, niacin, and magnesium. Though the amount is small, any extra sources of these vital minerals are helpful.
Tumblr media
2- Organic Coffee Growing Methods are Better for Farmers
Though the organic certification itself is expensive, most organic coffee farmers can charge more for their product because it is higher quality. That means they can pay their workers a better wage.
Many organic coffee growers are also compliant with fair trade standards. “Fair trade” means a business is devoted to environmental stewardship, individual and community well-being, and income sustainability.
Organic growing methods may not have the highest yield of coffee beans, but the care and attention required to keep the soil fertile means that the yields are more consistent.
3- Organic Coffee Growing Methods are Better for the Communities and the Planet
Organic coffee is grown without synthetic fertilizers or chemicals, and no pesticides or poisons. All of which makes for cleaner beans, land, water, and air. Because when synthetic chemicals are used on plants it does not just affect the plants themselves. Those highly toxic substances get into the surrounding soil and water that nearby communities use to grow their own food.
Organic farming is also more eco-friendly in that it emits less carbon than chemical farming. Not only do organic farmers not buy chemicals that emit greenhouse gases in production and use, but practices like composting trap carbon in the soil and allows it to break down before entering the atmosphere.
Most conventionally grown coffee is grown in full sun, which means forests are cleared to make fields for the coffee trees. But organic coffee is overwhelmingly grown the natural way – in the shady, lush forests that provide homes and sustenance for indigenous plants, animals, and peoples.

i got rickrolled today but it didn't work because i have adblocker installed, so youtube just told me i violated the terms of service. yesterday i was trying to edit a picture as a joke for my girlfriend, and google made me check a box to prove i'm human because i wasn't "searching normally".
it isn't just that capitalism is killing fun and whimsy, it is that any element of entertainment or joy is being fed upon by this mosquito body, one that will suck you dry at any vulnerability.
do you want to meet new friends in your city? download this app, visit our website, sign up for our email list. pay for this class on making a terrarium, on candlemaking, on cooking. it will be 90 dollars a session. you can go to group fitness, but only under our specific gym membership. solve the puzzle, sign up for our puzzle-of-the-month-club. what is a club if not just a paid opportunity - you are all paying for the same thing, which makes you a community.
but you're like me, i know it - you're careful, you try the library meetings and the stuff at the local school and all of that. the problem is that you kind of want really specific opportunities that used to exist. you are so grateful for libraries and the publicly-funded things: they are, however, an exception - and everything they have, they've fought tooth-and-nail to protect. you read a headline about how in many other states, libraries have virtually nothing left.
do you want to meet up with your friends afterwards? gift your friends the discord app. you can choose to go to a cafe (buy a coffee, at least), a bar (money, alcohol) or you can all stay in and catch a movie (streaming) or you can all stay in bed (rent. don't get me started) and scream (noise complaint. ticket at least).
you want to read a new book, but the book has to have 124 buzzwords from tiktok readers that are, like, weirdly horny. you can purchase this audiobook on audible! your podcast isn't on spotify, it's on its own server, pay for a different site. fuck, at least you're supporting artists you like. the art museum just raised their ticket price. once, they had a temporary exhibit that acknowledged that ~85% of their permanent art galleries were from cis white men, and that they had thousands of works by women (even famous women, like frida! georgia o'keefe!) just rotting in their basement. that exhibit lasted for 3 months and then they put everything away again.
walmart proudly supports this strip of land by the street! here are some flowers with wilting leaves. its employees have to pay out-of-pocket for their uniforms. my friend once got fined by the city because she organized a community pick-up of the riverfront, which was technically private property.
no, you cannot afford to take that dance class, neither can i. by the way - i'm a teacher. i'm absolutely not saying "educators shouldn't be paid fairly." i'm saying that when i taught classes, renting a studio went from 20 bucks an hour to 180 in the span of 6 months. no significant changes to the studio were made, except they now list the place as updated and friendly. the heat still doesn't work in the building. i have literally never seen the landlord who ignores my emails. recently they've been renting it out at night as an "unusual nightclub; a once-in-a-lifetime close-knit party." they spent some of those 180 dollars on LEDs and called it renovating. the high heels they invite in have been ruining the marley.
do you want to experience the old internet? do you want to play flash games or get back the temporary joy of club penguin? you can, you just need to pay for it. i have a weird, neurodivergent obsession with occasionally checking in to watch the downfall and NFT-ification of neopets. if i'm honest with you all - i never got into webkins, my family didn't have the money to buy me a pointless elephant. people forget that "being poor" can mean literally "if i buy you that toy, i can't afford rent."
you and i don't have time to make good food, and we don't have the budget for it. we are not gonna be able to host dinner parties, we're not made of money, kid. do you want some kind of 3rd space? a space that isn't home or work or school? you could try being online, but - what places actually exist for you? tiktok counts as social media because you see other people on it, not because they actually talk to you.
there was a local winter tradition of sledding down the hill at my school. kids would use pizza boxes and jackets and whatever worked, howling and laughing. back in september, they made a big announcement that this time, rules were changing, and everyone must pay 10 dollars to participate. when im not scared shitless, i kind of appreciate the environmental irony - it hasn't gone below 40. so much for snow & joyriding.
i saw a bulletin for a local dogwalking group and, nervous about making a good first impression, showed up early. the first guy there grimaced at me. "sorry," he said. "there's a 30-dollar buy-in fee." i thought he was joking. wait. for what? the group doesn't offer anything except friendship and people with whom to walk around the city.
he didn't know the answer. just shrugged at me. "you know," he said. "these days, everything costs money."

What makes Organic coffee different? Brewed Balance Roasters
People who like coffee often can't decide between conventional coffee and healthy coffee. People have made fertilizers, pesticides, and poisons that are not used on organic coffee farms.
Farmers bury crops, use natural chemicals, and switch between crops in order to grow the beans in a natural way. In this way, the most important things are to live a long time and be good to the world. This helps the land stay healthy and brings in more wildlife.
Brewed Balance Roasters gets organic coffee beans from reputable growers worldwide. A big part of their business is organic growing, so each cup of coffee is not only tasty but also good for the earth. Know about Organic vs. non-organic Coffee at https://brewedbalanceroasters.com/blogs/news/organic-vs-conventional-coffee.

I'll have to stop by the nature center one of these days (we're out of the 100°F weather for now), as I'm a little concerned about the availability of the bird-friendly coffee they sell (+organic, +worker-friendly). it's the best coffee I've ever had, by a significant margin.
the last time that I was in there, we had a 10-minute (or maybe 15) conversation about the coffee (I am their biggest customer!), with topics ranging from whether they should change the blend, to how many raw beans they import from honduras, to the packaging. they weren't sure that they were going to continue selling it, despite running out of their stock. the current packaging focuses on the indigo bunting, and features a map of its migration from the source of the coffee to nashville. I suggested that they not only bring it back, but perhaps they add another bird to spotlight. offering it pre-ground might also help, along with selling it in the traditional coffee bag, rather than a tin, though I don't believe I mentioned that.
in any event, I believe I've tracked down how to replace it if needed. I know exactly which co-op farm [COMSA] the beans are from. the only trick would be to find the right blend/roast (original, natural, or melado; likely one of the first two — melado refers to honeydew melons — are the ones that they sell in roasted/ground form, but that would be international shipping/customs, and I don't want to risk it being seized by authorities for being a potential drug smuggling operation; yes, I'd be paranoid about that despite the low likelihood).
there are a number of roasting companies in the United States that offer pre-ground beans from the region — dean's beans; grumpy mule, red rooster, new harvest, flat black, bowers lake, marlton, gato diablo, birds & beans, chesapeake, ampersand [okay, it might not be hard to find] but some of them don't specify COMSA. those don't sell locally; I would have to order online. and again, I'm not sure they would be the correct roast; some describe the flavour notes differently (hazelnut and dark chocolate feel right; cherry; but one describes it as mango?? I personally taste blueberries). some of them offer a dark roast (why the fuck would they do this? they are excellent beans. don't burn them until they've got no flavour... I blame starbucks).
I can alternatively buy the beans on amazon it would seem. I could roast those myself if I learned how.
I'd prefer buying from the nature center to help support them financially.
I'm overthinking this, aren't I? [ed. note: yes]

Why Switching To Organic Coffee Is Better Than Traditional Coffee?
Consumers eating habits and lifestyles have changed significantly due to the growing understanding of the importance of protecting the environment and our health. Consequently, there has been a huge increase in veganism and plant-based diets. Consuming organic coffee is another market-wide trend in healthful foods. It is healthful, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant-rich. A preference for the organic concept strengthens the organic coffee market. In addition, according to a research report by Astute Analytica, the global Organic Coffee Market is likely to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.56% over the projection period from 2023 to 2031. Coffee that is cultivated organically has many benefits over traditional coffee because it is grown without dangerous chemicals.
Eco-friendly
Organic coffee is advantageous for both the environment and a person's health.
Tree shade and lush forests also shield the plants from excessive sunshine. As a result, the coffee plants are kept in perfect condition with extra nutrients and tastes.
Organic agriculture also combats climate change. They produce fewer carbon emissions than chemical farms and sequester a sizable amount of carbon.
No artificial fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, or other growth-promoting agents are used in the production of this coffee, it contains less hazardous substances.
Normal coffee plants are hybridized to thrive in sunlight and open spaces. Although coffee naturally favors shade, maintaining it in dense forests is difficult. Forests are cleared to make way for growing ordinary coffee. Contrarily, organic coffee is grown naturally behind the shade of dense woods.
The absence of harmful pesticides and the use of sustainable farming methods significantly boost soil nutrients and improve soil health.
Organic coffee is more nutritious
All of the benefits of organic coffee come without the risk of people eating harmful chemicals that could eventually affect their health.
Drinking coffee in the morning wakes up a person's body, boosts their energy, and helps burn fat.
Caffeine has been associated with lowering the risk of Alzheimer's, type 2 diabetes, and depression.
Benefits for Coffee Farmers as well
Farmers who spray crops and handle them during harvest are exposed to a lot of pesticides.
Residues of chemicals in the air and water affect the local communities as well.
Provides aroma and refined flavor
Organic coffee has a great smell and scent. Because it is grown in the shade, this particular variety of coffee has a more pleasant aroma and flavor.
Rich in nutrients and antioxidants
Organic coffee helps person meet their daily nutrient needs since it contains important nutrients like riboflavin, potassium, magnesium, manganese, and niacin. It is untreated, making it full of nutrients, antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins.
Deforestation is not accelerated by organic coffee
Organic coffee is grown under the shade of dense forests, supporting soil fertility, preserving wild flora and animals, and preserving distinctive local ecologies. Conventional coffee is frequently grown at the expense of the forest If growers chose to destroy the forest to make place for open fields, where they subsequently plant massive volumes of a sun-loving coffee variety.
