The original lineup of Van Halen was on the verge of becoming one of the biggest acts in America in the early 1980s. After establishing themselves as hard rock gods at the tail end of the 1970s, the band was gaining more mainstream recognition and continued to incorporate more modern production into their sound. They were also working at a dangerous pace, having released one album every year while touring virtually non-stop.
1982’s Diver Down is a clear sign of burnout. Five covers, three instrumentals, and no true classic tracks among the bunch. Originally, Eddie Van Halen wanted to put out a cover song to satiate the public’s desire for more Van Halen music, but when that went over well with the record company, the idea for a full album was just around the corner.
“I said, ‘Look, if you want to do a cover tune, why don’t we do ‘Pretty Woman’? It took one day,” Van Halen recalled to Guitar Player magazine in 1982. “We went to Sunset Sound in L.A., recorded it, and it came out right after the first of the year. It started climbing the charts, so all of a sudden Warner Bros is going, ‘You got a hit single on your hands. We gotta have that record.’ We said, ‘Wait a minute, we just did that to keep us out there, so that people know we’re still alive.’ But they just kept pressuring, so we jumped right back in without any rest or time to recuperate from the tour, and started recording.”
Roy Orbison’s ‘(Oh) Pretty Woman’ wound up being the choice, but David Lee Roth had a different song in mind. “Dave came up with the idea of, ‘Hey, why don’t we start off the new year with just putting out a single?’ He wanted to do ‘Dancing in the Street.’ He gave me the original Martha Reeves & the Vandellas tape, and I listened to it and said, ‘I can’t get a handle on anything out of this song.’ I couldn’t figure out a riff, and you know the way I like to play: I always like to do a riff, as opposed to just hitting barre chords and strumming.”
Van Halen came up with a suitable riff, but only by taking a work in progress and attaching it to what Roth and producer Ted Templeman wanted, which was a cover of ‘Dancing in the Street’. “I was working on a great song with this riff that I envisioned being more like a Peter Gabriel song, but when Ted [Templeman] heard it, he decided it would be great for ‘Dancing in the Street.’ Ted and Dave were happy, but I wasn’t. The riff was my original idea, and I didn’t get any writing credits for it.”
That conflict would later become emblematic of the compromises Van Halen felt he had to make on the album. “In some ways, I think Diver Down happened that way because Ted wanted more control,” Van Halen later recalled. “There was always an inner struggle between Ted and me. But with Diver Down, it was like I was being asked to turn back. After we made that album, I wanted to make sure that never happened again.”

On this day in the history of music. Wow. And today seems so dull…
September 7th
2010 - Queen
Queen’s 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was voted the greatest ‘lighter in the air song of all time’ by lighter company Zippo. Led Zeppelin’s 'Stairway To Heaven', was voted in at No. 2 and Meat Loaf's ‘I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)’ was at No. 3 in the survey.
2007 - MP3 Players
A report showed that two-thirds of young people who regularly used MP3 players faced premature hearing damage. The Royal National Institute for Deaf People said its findings were alarming with research showing that 72 out of 110 MP3 users tested in the UK were listening to volumes above 85 decibels. Some MP3 players at full volume registered at 105 decibels, an aircraft taking off measured at 110 decibels.
2007 - Rock Stars
A new study revealed that rock stars were twice as likely to die early as the rest of us. Researchers said that the problem was so bad the industry should be labeled a 'high risk' profession.
2003 - Warren Zevon
US singer, songwriter, Warren Zevon died. He had worked as a session musician, was the piano player and band leader for the Everly Brothers. His 1969 song 'She Quit Me' was included in the soundtrack for the film Midnight Cowboy. Jackson Browne, the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt all appeared on his albums. He recorded over 15 solo albums, had the 1978 US No.21 single 'Werewolves Of London'.
2002 - Frankie Miller
The Frankie Miller tribute concert was held at Barrowlands in Glasgow, Scotland with all profits going to the Drake Music Project. The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Nazareth, Gallagher & Lyle, Hamish Stuart, former Thin Lizzy, guitarist Brian Robertson, ex-Genesis singer Ray Wilson and Joe Walsh all appeared. Miller attended the show, but was still recovering from a 1994 brain hemorrhage, and so was unable to join in.
1997 - Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac went to No.1 on the US album chart with 'The Dance'. The album went on sell over 5 million copies in the US alone and spawned three singles in the USA: 'Landslide', 'The Chain' and 'Silver Springs', and earned the band three Grammy nominations in 1998.
1985 - David Bowie
David Bowie and Mick Jagger were at No.1 on the UK singes chart with their version of the Martha Reeves and The Vandellas 1964 hit 'Dancing In The Street.' The song had been recorded as part of the Live Aid charity appeal. The original plan was to perform a track together live, with Bowie performing at Wembley Stadium and Jagger at the JFK Stadium, until it was realised that the satellite link-up would cause a half-second delay that would make this impossible.
1978 - Keith Moon
Keith Moon drummer with The Who, died of a overdose of heminevrin prescribed to combat alcoholism. A post-mortem confirmed there were 32 tablets in his system, 26 of which were undissolved. Moon had attended a party the night before organised by Paul McCartney for the launch of the The Buddy Holly Story movie. He played on all The Who albums from their debut, 1965's My Generation, to 1978's Who Are You, which was released two weeks before his death.
1976 - Abba
ABBA were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Dancing Queen', the group's fourth UK No.1 single and their only US No.1 chart topper. The song was a No.1 hit in over a dozen countries and stayed at the top of the Swedish charts for 14 weeks.
1976 - Buddy Holly
The first Buddy Holly week was held by UK fans in London, England.
1968 - Led Zeppelin
Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham made their live debut as Led Zeppelin but billed as The New Yardbirds at Teen Club in Gladsaxe (a suburb in the outskirts of Copenhagen, Denmark). Around 1,200 youngsters attended the show at Egegard School. Teen Club President Lars Abel introducing 'The New Yardbirds' on stage introduced Robert Plant as Robert Plat. A local review stated; 'Their performance and their music were absolutely flawless, and the music continued to ring nicely in the ears for some time after the curtains were drawn after their show. We can therefore conclude that the new Yardbirds are at least as good as the old ones were'.
1968 - Doors
The Doors played the first of two nights at The Roundhouse, London, playing 2 shows a night on their first UK visit. Granada TV filmed the sold out gigs (later shown as "The Doors Are Open"), which were attended by members of The Rolling Stones and Traffic.
1963 - The Beatles
The Beatles recorded an appearance on the BBC radio program ‘Saturday Club’, at the Playhouse Theatre in London. They performed ‘I Saw Her Standing There’, ‘Memphis’, ‘Happy Birthday Saturday Club’ (arrangement credited to John Lennon), ‘I'll Get You’, ‘She Loves You’, and ‘Lucille’.
1959 - Craig Douglas
Craig Douglas was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with his version of the Sam Cooke hit 'Only Sixteen'. Born Terence Perkins, he was employed as a milkman before becoming a professional singer and was known as the 'Singing Milkman'.

Betty Kelly (born September 16, 1944) (known as her correct name Betty Kelley) is a former singer, most famous for her tenure in the popular Motown singing group Martha and the Vandellas. She joined what became the most famed lineup of the Vandellas, coming in quickly to record the single "Dancing in the Street". The group found bigger success than they ever had before with that and many other songs recorded during Kelly's tenure with the group, including "I'm Ready for Love", "Nowhere to Run" and "My Baby Loves Me". The lineup of Reeves, Ashford, and she helped the group become international stars gaining popularity from performances from The Ed Sullivan Show, Shindig!, and American Bandstand. She was often mistaken for being an original member of the group even though Beard had sung on the group's earlier singles, often lip-synched by her when the group performed on TV. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CikGPnjufY2AewDej4JL1g33VZC49DBcJHsLO00/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Recreation of Mick Jagger And David Bowie Dancing in the Street In A Lego Style.
Tumblr media
Mick Jagger and David Bowie collaborated in 1985 to make one of the most mercilessly criticised music videos of all time: their cover of Martha and the Vandellas' "Mick Jagger and David Bowie Dancing in the Street." The original video of David Bowie Dancing in the Street, which you can watch at the bottom of this post, features the 40-ish-year-old rock/pop superstars—one of whom is dressed in period-correct (and forever incorrect) pastel-colored clothing—dancing like teenagers in a warehouse, hallways, and abandoned streets. At one point, they even shake their superstar asses in unison.
Tumblr media
Source: Google It doesn't really matter at this point, does it? Or, as Peter Griffin explains in an episode of The Family Guy about the David Bowie Dancing in the Street video, "That occurred, and we all let it happen." Anyway, a stop-motion animator named William Osborne has finally found a decent purpose for the Jagger/Bowie clip: it provided him with something to parody—this time using Legos. Osborne's new video, which you can view below, is far more entertaining than the first. It's actually rather enjoyable. Let's hope he makes Lego adaptations of other terrible 1980s videos. To be fair to Jagger and Bowie, their music video had to be pulled together swiftly back in 1985; director David Mallet apparently got the call the day before the shoot. Video of Mick Jagger And David Bowie Dancing in the Street https://youtu.be/BHkhIjG0DKc "My main thought was to put up a really good performance," Mallet later explained. "What was really essential was to see them perform together." People wanted to see these two huge stars together. On-the-spot choreography 'We can take this alley. We can make use of this storehouse." P.S. : Don't miss the middle footage, which features Jagger and David Bowie dancing in the street around without music in the background. It made the rounds on YouTube a few years ago, but it's still very good. Also read about Dusty Hill 1949-2021: Paying Tribute To The Bearded Boss Of Bass Guitar. This recreation of Mick Jagger and David Bowie Dancing in the Street is one of the most star-studded collaborations in rock 'n' roll history. Originally intended to be a link-up for the famine-relief cause, the video features erratic dance maneuvers, billowing fabric, and sexual tension. The two artists' dedication and commitment to the cause transcends the lack of planning or costume changes. It was the first time Bowie's video had such a dramatic tone compared to the lyrics of the song. It was shot at the London Docklands, and Bowie wore an oversized yellow raincoat to match his trademark bright red shoes. "Dancing in the Street" became a global anthem almost overnight. And while it's difficult to comprehend the song's message and its context, it's impossible to deny its power.
Tumblr media
The final video of the late rock star David Bowie was hard to watch. Bowie's death seemed imminent, but the performance kept the audience enraptured until the final scene. Bowie is seen in a red-colored light strumming an acoustic guitar. Director Mick Rock, meanwhile, translates the zero-G atmosphere by using oscilloscope pulses. The song's success was short-lived. The band had just released the critically acclaimed Undercover album. But the band's relationship with guitarist Keith Richards had deteriorated due to a new record deal. Jagger's plans to become a solo star were put on hold when Bob Geldof invited both stars to take part in the Live Aid concert in 1985. This version of "David Bowie Dancing in the Street" was also chosen for preservation by the Library of Congress. Reeves was thrilled to see the song's persistence in the public consciousness, and she was gratified to have her voice featured in the music. It was also released in official form by Danny Shaffer, another Billboard charting producer. They were certified by the RIAA. Read the full article

Syreeta Wright
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Syreeta Wright (August 3, 1946 – July 6, 2004), who recorded professionally under the single name Syreeta, was an American singer-songwriter, best known for her work with her ex-husband Stevie Wonder and musical artist Billy Preston.
Biography
Early life and career
Wright was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1946, and started singing at age four. Her father served in the Korean War and Wright and her two sisters, Yvonne and Kim, were raised by their mother Essie and their grandmother. The Wrights moved back and forth from Detroit to South Carolina before finally settling in Detroit just as Wright entered high school. Money problems kept Wright from pursuing a career in ballet so she focused her attention on a music career joining several singing groups before landing a job as a receptionist for Motown in 1965. Within a year, she became a secretary for Mickey Stevenson, just as Martha Reeves had done before her.
A year later, Edward Holland of the Holland–Dozier–Holland songwriting team noticed Wright's singing and decided to try her out for demos of Supremes songs. Motown CEO Berry Gordy shortened her birth name to "Rita," and Wright released her first solo single, "I Can't Give Back the Love I Feel for You", in January 1968. The song was initially written for the Supremes (by then billed as "Diana Ross & the Supremes"). They later recorded the song in 1968 and Diana Ross re-recorded the song for her solo album, Surrender.
Wright also performed demo vocals for the Supremes hit "Love Child" and Ross's "Something's On My Mind", which Ross later recorded for her self-titled debut album. When Diana Ross left the Supremes in early 1970, Motown boss Berry Gordy considered replacing her with Wright, but offered the place in the group to Jean Terrell. According to several sources, Gordy then changed his mind and tried to replace Terrell with Wright, but this was vetoed by Supreme Mary Wilson.
Wright also sang background on records by the Supremes and by Martha and the Vandellas, notably singing the chorus to the group's modest hit single, "I Can't Dance to That Music You're Playing". Wright met labelmate Stevie Wonder in 1968, and the two began dating the following year. On the advice of Wonder, Wright became a songwriter. Their first collaboration, "It's a Shame", was recorded by The Spinners, in 1969. Motown withheld its release until July 1970. The song reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. Wright also began singing background for Wonder, most notably on the hit "Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours)", which Wright co-wrote with Wonder. In September 1970, after a year-long courtship, Wright, 24, and Wonder, 20, married in Detroit. The couple then wrote and arranged songs for Wonder's Where I'm Coming From, which was released much to Berry Gordy's chagrin in the spring of 1971. The Wonder–Wright composition "If You Really Love Me" (which also featured Wright prominently singing background vocals) reached number 8 in the US that year. In 1971, following Wonder's exit from Motown, the couple relocated to New York City where Wonder worked on two independent albums.
Solo career
Wonder returned to Motown in 1972 after being promised creative control for his recordings, allowing Wonder to set up a company called Black Bull Productions. Wonder and Wright came with songs for Wonder's next album, Music of My Mind. Following a tour opening for The Rolling Stones in the summer of 1972, Wonder issued his follow-up, Talking Book, which turned out to be Wonder's breakthrough album. In between the albums, Wright decided to return to her own singing career. Motown reassigned the singer from Motown's Gordy imprint, where "I Can't Give Back the Love I Feel for You" was released, to Motown's L.A.-based MoWest subsidiary. Wonder and Wright had marriage troubles and divorced in the summer of 1972, ending their 18-month marriage. Following their divorce, Wonder oversaw the production of Wright's first solo album, Syreeta, which included Wright's take of Wonder's "I Love Every Little Thing About You" from Music of My Mind, the Smokey Robinson classic "What Love Has Joined Together", and The Beatles' "She's Leaving Home", which featured both Wonder and Wright applying background vocals via the talk box. MoWest issued "I Love Every Little Thing About You" in the late winter of 1972, but it failed to chart. Remaining best friends, Wright would continue to provide background vocals and compositions with Wonder for the next two decades.
In 1974, Wright was again reassigned, this time to the Motown label proper (in the U.S.), and issued her second release, the aptly-titled Stevie Wonder Presents: Syreeta that June. Following the success of Minnie Riperton's Perfect Angel, which Wonder also produced, Wonder wanted to present Wright in the same light as Riperton as a sensual vocalist. The covers also were very similar to each other. Riperton added background vocals to the album, promptly at the end of the album track "Heavy Day". The album yielded the UK singles "I'm Goin' Left" (covered by Eric Clapton and Jerry Butler), "Spinnin' and Spinnin'" and the reggae-flavored "Your Kiss is Sweet", which became a UK Top 40, reaching number 12 in 1975. The album also featured one duet with G. C. Cameron, formerly of the Spinners. The duo released the duet album Rich Love, Poor Love in 1977. Production on Wright's third album, One to One, went on for two years. The album featured the sole Wonder production, "Harmour Love", which found some success after being featured on the movie Junebug, and was mainly produced by Leon Ware, who also produced Marvin Gaye and Riperton.
Wright's next effort came courtesy of a chance meeting with Billy Preston, who had signed with Motown in early 1979. Motown assigned the two to collaborate on a pop ballad for the movie Fast Break. Wright and Preston provided the soundtrack of the film and their first collaboration, "With You I'm Born Again", resulted in an international hit reaching number-four US and number-two UK in late 1979. The success of the song led Motown to renew Wright's contract, which was due to expire that year, with neither side looking to renegotiate. Wright and Preston continued their collaborations until 1982. Wright still worked with Wonder during this period singing the lead vocals for their composition "Come Back as a Flower" for Wonder's Journey through the Secret Life of Plants and also sung alongside Wonder on his 1980 song "As If You Read My Mind" for his Hotter than July album. Wright continued to provide background vocals until Wonder's 1995 album Conversation Peace.
Wright continued to record for Motown into the 1980s, releasing her second self-titled album in 1980, and releasing the funk/boogie-oriented Set My Love in Motion in late 1981. During that same time period, she added vocals to the theme song for the Canadian slasher-horror flick Happy Birthday to Me, known for starring Little House on the Prairie′s Melissa Sue Anderson. The album featured the minor R&B hit "Quick Slick", which peaked at number 41 R&B in early 1982. Wright then issued The Spell in 1983 and left Motown two years later after collaborating with Smokey Robinson for the soundtrack to Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon in 1985. Wright briefly recorded for Motorcity Records before retiring from show business for good in the mid-1990s and settling in Los Angeles with her four children.
In 1993, she joined the national touring cast of Jesus Christ Superstar in the role of Mary Magdalene, alongside original film stars Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson (singer). She stayed in the cast until 1995.
Personal life
Wright was married three times. Her first marriage, to longtime collaborator Stevie Wonder, lasted 18 months, from 1970 to 1972, while a marriage to bassist Curtis Robertson Jr. was also short-lived. Wright briefly lived in Ethiopia in the mid-1970s, where she worked as a Transcendental Meditation teacher. She eventually settled in Los Angeles, where she lived for the rest of her life. Born and raised a Baptist, she converted to Islam following her third marriage.
Wright died in 2004 of congestive heart failure, a side effect of chemotherapy and radiation treatments she was receiving for breast and bone cancer. She was buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery.

Heat Wave by The Who
This song is of particular interest, in that it’s a cover of a Motown classic by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. The Who’s rendition is most different in its selection of instruments, being limited to the standard sound of a rock quartet. Though the original recording of “Heat Wave” can’t be topped, the Who’s cover is an excellent tribute, keeping the spirit of the song.

‪On this day in 1982, Van Halen released ‘Diver Down’.‬ Five of the twelve songs on the album are covers, the most popular being the cover of "(Oh) Pretty Woman", a Roy Orbison song. At the time, the record company thought it had a greater chance of a hit record if the album was composed of songs that were already successful. In retrospect, it turned out to be one of the Van Halen brothers' least-favorite albums, with Eddie stating "I'd rather have a bomb with one of my own songs than a hit with someone else's." However, at the time while he admitted to the pressure the band was put under to record it, he was able to tell Guitar Player (Dec. 1982) that it "was fun": "When we came off the Fair Warning tour last year [1981], we were going to take a break and spend a lot of time writing this and that. Dave came up with the idea of, 'Hey, why don't we start off the new year with just putting out a single?' He wanted to do 'Dancing in the Streets.' He gave me the original Martha Reeves & the Vandellas tape, and I listened to it and said, 'I can't get a handle on anything out of this song.' I couldn't figure out a riff, and you know the way I like to play: I always like to do a riff, as opposed to just hitting barre chords and strumming. So I said, 'Look, if you want to do a cover tune, why don't we do 'Pretty Woman'? It took one day. We went to Sunset Sound in L.A., recorded it, and it came out right after the first of the year. It started climbing the charts, so all of a sudden Warner Bros. is going, 'You got a hit single on your hands. We gotta have that record.' We said, 'Wait a minute, we just did that to keep us out there, so that people know we're still alive.' But they just kept pressuring, so we jumped right back in without any rest or time to recuperate from the tour, and started recording. We spent 12 days making the album... it was a lot of fun." In addition to this, two of the original songs were around long before the album was made. "Hang 'Em High" can trace its roots back to the band's 1977 demos as "Last Night", which had the same music but different lyrics. "Cathedral" was also nothing new, being played in its current form throughout 1981 with earl (at MONSTERS OF ROCK) https://www.instagram.com/p/B--AmCfpfS-/?igshid=1fgdusjiusj7z

Annette Beard (born July 4, 1943), also known as Annette Helton or Annette Sterling, is an R&B and soul singer. She is known for her work with Motown and as an original member of the singing group Martha and the Vandellas. She is known as a member of the singing group The Original Vandellas. Born in Detroit to Ann and Roger El Wood Beard, she started singing in church choirs at an early age. When she was fourteen, she was discovered by a man named Edward "Pops" Larkins, who was holding auditions for a female group at the local YMCA to complement a male group he had started. She impressed him with a single note and she joined friends Rosalind Ashford and Gloria Williams to form the original version of The Del-Phis. The group performed at local get-togethers, high school parties, YMCA benefits, and lawn parties. She did not mind singing background behind Gloria Williams, then the original lead singer of the group. Fellow Detroit singer Martha Reeves would replace a departing fourth member. She graduated from Southeastern High School. With graduation behind them, it was time for serious consideration of their options and what the future held for them. After changing their name to The Vels, the group recorded for local Motown subsidiaries Mel-O-Dy and Tamla singing background for local Detroit acts such as The Elgins' Saundra Mallett. Frustrated by the group's slow development and sensing a break-up, Williams left the group. She, Martha, and Rosalind sang together on Marvin Gaye's hits "Stubborn Kind of Fellow", "Hitch Hike" and "Pride and Joy". Motown president Berry Gordy suggested the girls sign a contract as a recording group. With Reeves as the confirmed lead singer, the name Vandellas was chosen with the final name being Martha and the Vandellas. She reunited again with Reeves and Ashford, releasing the "Heat Wave"-styled pop of "Step into My Shoes". This reunion lead to several tours across the US and UK. She joined Reeves, Ashford, Betty Kelly, and Lois Reeves, as Martha and the Vandellas were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. After 30 years at Saint John's Hospital, she retired. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CflwrevreKt5MHAQ1gSLLRWLTFmWKOHgvg_pA00/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
