It had to be Three PM when he showed. He planned when to go, where to be, his escape route- everything was taken care of in advance. At least it should be as long as there was no surprises.

Shade enveloped himself in the shadow of a building, sinking into the dark with no trace of his previous location. He moved through the void with ease, stopping once he reached the desired position. He was listening in at the Saloon, any news or information he could gather would be useful.

“I ain’t even sure he has a heart!”

…It seemed he showed up mid conversation. Oh well. Context clues, don’t fail him now.

“We don’t know that, Ed.”

“That’s the problem. We don’t know anything about him. How’re we supposed to catch him off guard?”

Catching someone off guard. He knew he was good at that, shadows tended to be good hiding spots. But heartless and mysterious? That would prove tougher, even for him. Catching people by surprise often required knowing about them, but he could make do. Maybe he could even step in if he wanted to steal their victory.

“…With how much trouble e’s been causin’, we best hope we find out.”

Troublesome, elusive, cold. That didn’t seem like an easy one to crack. Honestly, he couldn’t think of anyone who could fit the bill either. Maybe someone new came around?

“It’s Shade, North Star. We’d be lucky to see him out and about.”

…What?

“I know, that’s why e’s frustratin’! Shadowy bastard can’t keep still.”

…No. nonono, this wasn’t real. They didn’t actually hate him, did they? He was just playing along, right? He had to have been, there wasn’t any other way to make enough noise-

-Alone, or Alone in Silence. You fooled yourself thinking there was a third option.

He winced, clenching his eyes shut. He’d been in the shadows too long again, they were feeding false information to him.

..Is it false? Or are you just delaying the inevitable?

He needed to get out of here. Shadow travel required focus. Deep inhale, hold, exhale. Deep inhale, hold, exhale.

Running won’t work forever.

‘Shut up, shut up, I can’t listen to you right now! I need to get home, stop distracting me!’

He ended up crumpled on the floor, hands covering his ears. He wasn’t processing anything around him, the shadows wouldn’t let him. It was too quiet. Why did it go quiet? Why now?

He blinked his eyes open, trying to adjust to the sudden change of atmosphere before he took in his surroundings. There were glances that stuck too long towards him to be coincidental...

Eyes were on him. The shadows hid, how could they have spotted him? He brought his hands away from his ears, and one in front of himself. His hand was shaking, his sleeve was the normal white, and- Wait.

..White didn’t show in the shadows.

He could see white.

He wasn’t in the shadows.

People could see him.

A chill ran down his spine with this realization. Pushing himself to his feet, he met eyes with someone (he wasn’t sure who in his frantic state) before stumbling out of the saloon and running. It was quiet other than the sound of his SOUL pounding in his chest, his own footfall, and the shadows speaking out toward him once more.

You should’ve known better.

‘I should've been more careful, I'm sorry-’

No one wants to be near you, no one wants to talk with you…

‘I don't wanna think, get out of my head!'

I’ve been working on Orpheus’s lyre since January 2024, and it took me a solid 3 months to finish this prop! I wanted to challenge myself with something more complex, and honestly, I think it turned out pretty great! The base is made from EVA foam, and the faces and details are done with foam clay. Hopefully one day I’ll get back to this and finish the rest of the Orpheus cosplay!

I saw a production of Hadestown (teen edition) last weekend that unfortunately mostly suffered from not being the other, superior, teen edition I saw a couple weeks before that at a different theater.

BUT the version I recently saw did give us Hades Absolutely Shredding an electric guitar, so for that I am grateful.

Orpheus got banned from shadow travel sometimes before Dalv left. Dalv is back and he is struggling.

honestly i think one of the reasons phirell changed my brain chemistry is that on my first playthrough i started shipping them as soon as he showed up, half out of spite for Oh God Not the Edgy Forced Het Ship Tease and half out of spite for knowing characters like philio are never involved in canon ships, only to get completely poleaxed by him being THE main subtextual love interest while kirell/aam is significantly more ambiguous once you get past balaam's surface-level performance. literally one of the potential last questions on his section of charon's interview--which you only find out is the case on your second playthrough--makes him happy if you say you're fine with just living out your life, and even happier if you say you're open to starting a family. when i tell you i was going insane
