Se conoce como puerta de Elvira o #ArcodeElvira al principal acceso a #Granada en Andalucía (España), durante la dominación islámica. La puerta #ortaleza es una de las más antiguas, pues ya aparecen citas de ella en el siglo IX. Su nombre, #Bab-Ilvira, se debe a que encaminaba a la antigua #MedinaElvira, capital de la cora del mismo nombre hasta principios del siglo XI, cuando pasó a desempeñar esta función Medina #Garnata. Fue construida por los sultanes #ziríes, integrada en la muralla que la unía con la #PuertaMonaita y por el suroeste con la Puerta del Sulfuro de Antimonio, Bab al-Kubl, —conocida popularmente como Arco de las Tinajillas—. Ha experimentado distintas transformaciones a lo largo de su historia, siendo de mayor importancia la llevada a cabo en el reinado de #Yusuf I de la dinastía #nazarí. En esta época quedó conformada como fortaleza autónoma con cuatro torres, tres barbacanas y dos puertas —además de la exterior— que comunicaban con la cuesta de la Alhacaba y la calle de Elvira. En 1612 fueron demolidas las tres barbacanas, se allanó la explanada que precedía a la puerta y se construyeron doce casas adosadas a la muralla, que han llegado hasta hoy prácticamente sin variaciones. Durante la ocupación francesa se destruyeron varias puertas chapadas con hierro y se demolieron murallas, y en 1879 se derribó la Puerta del Hierro (bab al-Hadid) también llamada Puerta de la Cuesta (bab al-Aqaba), que se había añadido en el siglo XIV para comunicar la medina con el Albaicín. En la actualidad se conservan el arco exterior de época nazarí, flanqueado por dos torres de tapial, todo rematado por almenas, y el estribo del lateral norte, formado por tres altos arcos de ladrillo que sustentan el correspondiente adarve. El arco de herradura, parecido a los de la Puerta de la Justicia y Puerta de la Rambla, está formado con dovelas, que son lajas de piedra arenisca, arquivolta del mismo tipo y jambas achaflanadas de piedra. MANILA – The Sandiganbayan has meted imprisonment and fines to two local officials in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija for demanding and accepting PHP300,000 from a local firm in consideration for the immediate passage of a resolution authorizing the construction of cell sites in the city in 2013.

In a 63-page decision dated October 20 and released on Thursday, Associate Justice Sarah Jane Fernandez of the anti-graft court’s Sixth Division has sentenced Cabanatuan Sangguniang Panglungsod (City Council) member Angelito Saclolo Jr. and council secretary Alfredo G. Ortaleza up to eight years in prison and a fine of PHP900,000 for direct bribery and solicitation.

“The prosecution established beyond reasonable doubt that the accused Saclolo and Ortaleza solicited PHP440,000 and after negotiations to reduce the amount, accepted PHP300,000 in the course of their official duties from Richworld Aire and Technologies Corp.,” the court said.

At that time, the firm was securing a locational clearance from the city for cell site towers to be put up at Bakero and Sapang villages.

The complainants said the amount was requested during a meeting in a local restaurant by the accused as an “SOP” or “unofficial amount” paid to local officials to accommodate applications and to issue a resolution.

Saclolo was then the city council’s concurrent chairman of the Committee on Transportation and Communications.

An ordinance No. 013-2013 was subsequently given to the firm who were later informed by the Office of the City Planning and Development Office that a city council resolution was not necessary for the issuance of a locational clearance.

The council officials, however, refused to return the SOP. (PNA)

ASEAN Summit 2017: What, Why, Where and Happenings

Association of Southeast Asian Nations also known as ASEAN consists of 10 members together with Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore,  Malaysia, Philippines, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Brunei while the ASEAN Regional Forum consist of 27 members together with Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Darussalam, Cambodia, Canada, China, European Union, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Mongolia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor Leste, United States and Vietnam.  It was established on 8 August 1967 by these countries for its main purpose of promoting what they have and to export things to other country, economic growth, regional stability and cultural development of its members.

According to an article from Asean.Org there are 7 Reasons why ASEAN is an important congress each participating countries should participate to. “1st is to accelerate the economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region through joint endeavors in the spirit of equality and partnership in order to strengthen the foundation for a prosperous and peaceful community of Southeast Asian Nations; 2nd is to promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries of the region and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter; 3rd is to promote active collaboration and mutual assistance on matters of common interest in the economic, social, cultural, technical, scientific and administrative fields; 4th is to provide assistance to each other in the form of training and research facilities in the educational, professional, technical and administrative spheres; 5th is to collaborate more effectively for the greater utilization of their agriculture and industries, the expansion of their trade, including the study of the problems of international commodity trade, the improvement of their transportation and communications facilities and the raising of the living standards of their peoples; 6th is to promote Southeast Asian studies; and lastly the 7th reason is to maintain close and beneficial cooperation with existing international and regional organizations with similar aims and purposes, and explore all avenues for even closer cooperation among themselves.”

As discussed, the 31st ASEAN Summit will be held here in the Philippines and it was also announced that on November 13- 17, 2017 would be a non-working holiday by our President to make way for the ASEAN Summit.  We Filipinos we have mixed feelings regarding this major event since there are setbacks that we had to comply with regards the preparation and all.As the host for the 31st ASEAN summit, we must put our best foot forward since the main reason for this event is for the best interest of our country, to resolve pre existing conflicts and create stronger connections between our co-ASEAN representatives. “It is said that the highlight of the 1st day of 31st ASEAN summit were the meeting of President Rodrigo Duterte and US President Donald Trump. And the dancers perform welcoming world leaders,” says George Calvelo (2017).  Their seminar for 2 days talked about things that are happening inside and outside of the country.    

According to Laura Zhou, 2017 there are 4 issues that were raised during Asean Summit congress. 1st is West Philippine Sea/South China sea. We all know there are 7 countries on a unified dispute with regards to whoever owns the island. China (including Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan), Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore and Vietnam. Laura Zhou states that “US President Donald Trump said in Vietnam before his arrival in the Philippines that he was willing to mediate or arbitrate in South China Sea disputes.” 2nd issue is Indo- Pacific vs Asia- Pacific, US President Donald Trump and other white house officials begun referring Asia Pacific as Indo Pacific “the concept still lacks details and Trump is expected to unveil additional information about his Asia strategy.” India and Australia is part of Indo Pacific and this 2 countries are US key allies in region. 

3rd issue is Rohingya Crisis, It is described as “one of the most persecuted minorities in the world” a muslim group fleeing back to Myanmar in late August this year because of systematic discrimination against them there where limited access to schools, healthcare and job; even abusing their human rights. Lastly, Trades. This will be the first time for Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Leaders, there are six free trade area partners including China, South Korea, Japan, India, Australia and New Zealand wherein US is not involved with this pact.
