Renu Raj Biography

Renu Raj is from the Kottayam in Kerala. She did her schooling at St. Teresa’s Higher Secondary School in Changanassery, Kottayam. Her father is a retired government servant and her mother is a housewife. She did her graduation in M.B.B.S from Government Medical College at Kottayam. Her husband is also a doctor. He has done his specialization in Orthopedia.

Becoming an IAS Officer was her dream since childhood. While she was working as a surgeon her ambition of becoming an IAS officer become strong. As she was aware of the problems faced by the common people. She wanted to do something that will make their lives easier. And so began her journey and she started preparing for the UPSC exam. She was able to secure AIR 2 in 2014 in her very first attempt. Renu Raj’s optional subject was Malayalam Literature.

Ancient works of philosophy, religion, myths, and fairy tales dating back as far as 3500 BC invoke images of people with spinal deformity. Inferred from these writings is the unfortunate burden borne by these severely disfigured individuals who were often stimatized, ridiculed, feared and hated. 20, 34 Hippocrates, in the fifth century BC, described scoliosis for the first time. He expressed an appreciation of the potential magnitude of the deformity and knowledge of curve progression during skeletal growth. Believing that spinal deformity was a result of poor posture, he recommended treatment with axial distraction on an extension apparatus. 31

Galen (AD 131–201) is credited with coining the terms scoliosis, kyphosis, and lordosis to describe spinal deformity. In addition to distraction devices, as advocated by Hippocrates, Galen tried various chest binders and jackets in an effort to control spinal curves. He further advised respiratory exercises and loud singing, feeling that repeated exercise of the rib cage musculature might correct some of the thoracic distortion. The period of the Dark Ages (AD 400–1000) saw little which furthered the understanding and treatment of spinal deformity. Curvature of the spine was perceived to be a result of divine retribution. Spinal deformity, it seems, was common amongst heretics and was treated with a distraction apparatus known as the “rack.” 35, 58 Ambrose Paré (1510–1590) first described congenital scoliosis and appreciated spinal cord compression as a possible cause of paraplegia. He also believed scoliosis resulted from poor posture. He advocated the use of iron corsets fabricated by armorers, in addition to axial traction. Paré, too, appreciated the progression of curves during growth and recommended new breast plates to be made every 3 months for growing individuals. The word “orthopedia”(literally “straight child”) was coined by Nicholas Andre for the title of his treatise in 1741. He emphasized his belief that scoliosis was the result of muscle imbalance, a consequence of poor sitting posture. Proper construction of tables and chairs for students was felt to be important in preventing scoliosis. For the treatment of scoliosis, he recommended periods of recumbence, as well as braces or corsets. In 1768 Francois LeVacher, describes the “Jurymast” brace, which allowed for axial distraction while the patient was upright. This was accomplished by a tight- (medical article cuts off here)
