help me understand bc it's breaking my brain (regarding college/uni and osap)

when you're interested in a college program that has several courses, are you supposed to sign up for the whole program? or the courses one by one? are you supposed to sign up for all of them at once? or just one at a time? if you complete all the courses individually, will the school know to automatically give you the certificate or degree or whatever for the program?

the program i want to do has 6 courses but the application sheet only allows 4 to be written down and you have to choose when you want to do each course in the year. i also have no idea how OSAP works in canada, some say they only cover $2k/year, others say they cover up to $6k/year. if the whole program is ~$2300, will they cover the whole thing? omg i'm lost.

PSA for Ontario folks who have a Canada-Ontario Integrated Student Loan:

i just learned today that you can pay off just the Ontario portion of your loan by mailing a cheque to the NSLSC with a letter instructing them to apply it to your Ontario loan only.

Canada student loans are interest-free, but Ontario student loans are not, so if you pay off the Ontario portion of your loan, you will no longer pay any interest!! so if you can afford to pay off your Ontario loan, or at least a good chunk of it, it's definitely worth doing.

personally, i'm paying about $22/month in interest on the ~$3200 remaining balance of my Ontario loan, and i'm looking forward to getting that extra $22 cleared from my monthly bills!

there are a few guides for this on reddit (here's one) but the steps are basically:

sign in to your NSLSC account. on your dashboard, find your Funding Summary and click on your Canada-Ontario Integrated Student Loan. here, you can find your Loan Number, Ontario Loan Amount Owing, and Daily Interest Charge.

write a cheque in the amount of your Ontario student loan, plus a little extra to cover any interest accrued while your cheque is being processed (some guides specifically recommend 10 days of interest; i would aim higher just to be safe). pay to "NSLSC" or "National Student Loans Service Centre", and include your loan number in the memo.

write a letter instructing the NSLSC to accept the cheque as payment towards the Ontario portion of your loan, then to apply any amount left over to the federal portion of your loan.

mail the cheque and letter to the NSLSC (National Student Loans Service Centre, P.O. Box 4030, Mississauga ON L5A 4M4).

i'm going to do this sometime in the next week; i'll report back on how it goes... but, it sounds like a lot of people have been able to do this successfully, so there should be nothing to worry about! go forth and make ur student loans interest-free ✨
