I recently found a cheap used lacefront off of eBay and styled it specifically for the Takarazuka version of Oscar! I want to make several looks from their productions at some point and decided to dedicate a wig specifically to it. The style has changed a lot over the years of productions, so I kind of picked the elements I liked best from different ones and combined them.

The base wig was straight, so I did a roller set, steamed it, combed it out, and trimmed the bangs and layers afterwards. Thanks @gormasmus for teaching me how to do roller sets, it's so much more efficient than a curling iron once you get the hang of it!

I'm actually planning on redoing my wig for my full military Oscar build which sounds crazy I know. I still plan on using my old wig for some of her looks, but I've realized I want to take the style a slightly different design direction for my competition build after some more thought and research.

Preliminary sketch for today's inktober prompt "Match". I have to get ready for my day job soon, so I figured I'd post my work in progress and finish up late tonight. I'm borrowing an illustration from _Revolutionary Girl Utena_, with Utena on the right, but I'm replacing Anthy with Oscar from _The Rose of Versailles_ All my sketching practice these last few months is paying off. "Ah, in Versailles a rose blooms . . ."

I wore a test run of Oscar from The Rose of Versailles to the Chicago Historical Costuming Society's apple orchard event and had an amazing time! I took inspiration from Oscar's fencing outfit in the Takarazuka Revue adaptation since I already had some suitable clothing pieces for it and some lovely blue fabric in my stash that I used for the waistcoat. I've been rewatching the series and getting super stoked to finally dig into the full costume, she's been a dream costume of mine for the past 12 years or so!

I've been crazy busy this month, but here's a makeup test I did for Takarazuka style Oscar back when I finished styling the wig! This makeup is HARD, precision eye makeup has never been my strong suit and I'm going to need some more practice before I feel like I'm doing it justice. I won't be doing this style makeup for my full Oscar build, I'll be taking a live-action approach for that. It'll be fun to eventually make some of her Takarazuka looks tho and throw all the shiny and sparkles at them!

Here's my mockup for Oscar's tailcoat that I finished this weekend! Overall I'm pretty happy with it, theres's a few things I need to tweak but it's very close. I used Laughing Moon Mercantile's Late Georgian Tailcoat pattern as a base so that I started with period accurate back seams/vents. I redid the front of the coat and the shape of the tails and added the turnbacks.

I used a cheap fleece type fabric that I thrifted for this mockup since it more closely resembled the weight of the wool fabric than muslin. I also added in the shoulder pads and some of the upper chest padding/structure that I plan on using to make sure everything fits right for the final tailored garment. When I'm making a mockup for something with applique or embroidery designs on it, I like to roughly sketch out the general size and placement of the designs as reference for when I draft or digitize the final designs.

I did my first wig and makeup test for Oscar from Rose of Versailles yesterday! I definitely will be doing a few more to experiment with where on the spectrum of femme to masc I want the makeup to fall. There's a couple photos comparing some quick toned down versions without the false eyelashes that I did to cross compare. On the one hand I think the more femme version feels stylistically closer to Ikeda's art style, on the other hand less makeup feels more true to the character. It'll also depend on how it looks with the rest of the costume.

I'm not 100% done with the wig, I plan on cutting some more layers and toning down the poof some since it's a bit much even for Oscar 😂. The wig started as a Luthien in Champagne from Arda Wigs. I sewed in some extra wefts, used a hair crimper on the first 5-6" from the roots throughout for volume, and used a Bed Head deep waving tool to curl it. After that I lightly combed the curls to fluff them a bit, and cut the layers and styled the bangs.

I'm so excited to be finally digging into progress on this cosplay!

I've been busy doing some machine embroidery samples for Oscar from Rose of Versailles! I think I've gotten the color and look to a place that I'm happy with as a substitute for hand goldwork embroidery.

This has long been a dream build for me and I love researching costume history which I've been pouring into this project. I have a stories highlight on my IG with my historical research reasoning/process for those who are interested! Second pic is the museum piece I'm referencing from Musée de l'Armee in Paris.

You can see a comparison with one of my earlier embroidery samples that used a much more yellow/brassy toned metallic thread which I wasn't fond of. I like the more natural toned down gold color, and it better matches some of my other gold trimming and bullion samples that I'll be using as well. I'm excited to start patterning and swatching fabrics for the final piece now!
