You know what strikes me the most about this picture?

And this one...

Both of these images have one thing in common...

That is, Ciel's presence in the kitchen.

Which speaks about his character, tbh.

Given the time period and the way society worked back then, I'm sure that the master of the house rarely - or never - stepped into the kitchen (even Sebastian said so himself, that the kitchen wasn't a place for Ciel). But there he was, snacking away or licking his finger oh-so-casually, just like Finny. And seeing that there's only one plate on the table, I'd go and assume that both Ciel & Finny took the curry from the same plate. Moreover, Finny didn't seem surprised/awkward to see Ciel there, which means that this isn't the first time that Ciel has joined them in the "below stairs".

Ciel, despite everything, is still a child. He's mischievous. Granted, some of his mischief are more dangerous than others, but he still enjoys simple things like this. He might be the master of the house, but he has no qualms about going to the kitchen to join his servants in curry tasting or to eat snacks with them. I don't think you'd often find an earl in his kitchen, eating with his servants.

This is just one of the things that greatly differentiate him from his brother. R!Ciel would rather die (again?) than getting caught spending time so casually with a bunch of servants. He even talked down at Sebastian (something that I'll be forever salty about).

This is why no matter how much he'd like to pretend otherwise, o!Ciel would never be like his brother. Because after everything has been said and done, he's a good person at heart.

I love the attention to detail and symbolism since the flower that Sebastian is cutting so dangerously close to O!Ciel's eye (seriously Sebastian chill tf out motherfucker) is a lily.

Lilies don't just resemble death itself; they represent when the soul leaves the body of the individual who died, hence why they're often used in funerals.

I don't think I need to elaborate any further on this imagery do I?

The first hint of the twins can be found all the way back in chapter 2.

Later on, from Elizabeth's flashback during the Campania arc, we'll learn that r!Ciel didn't seem to mind being engaged to Elizabeth. I don't think he would think that he was being forced to. He even said that he was glad that Lizzie was the one who'd be his bride.

O!Ciel, on the other hand, wasn't meant to be engaged to Elizabeth, but he was forced to acknowledge the engagement because he was playing his brother. The manga even put the word "forced" and "want" in bold.

When I first read this (before I knew about the twins), I didn't think too much of it. I thought that he simply was talking about the arranged marriage as being 'forced'. But when I read this after the twin reveal, those words have some underlying meaning.

I'm sorry to say I've been thinking and thought I'd expand upon how what's going on now parallels what's going on with the twins. To the dismay of the readers it was shown that Snake didn't really know the true Doll for who they were... He loved an idealized version of Doll, and what that idea, meant to him. He truly thought of Doll as a good person who would never harm innocent kids, and that's simply not true. I've been thinking a lot about how both the twins are guilty of the same idealization when it comes to each other, even if they both don't know it yet. R!Ciel may claim he's proud of his twin on the surface, but he conveys it in the most insincere and condescending way imaginable... and clearly doesn't think too highly of his brothers accomplishments, as he's happy to disregard them. He says he's excited to have a 'real fight' with his brother... but it's pretty evident what he means by that, is he relishes in humiliating him and can't wait to win, to beat him in this fight. He's underestimating him, even if he wont own up to it. In his mind, O!Ciel represents the perfect little brother that highlights his own strengths and makes him shine by comparison. O!Ciel in all likelihood, probably doesn't think of this bizarre doll as his brother in the truest sense, even a little bit. Even if he hasn't said this out loud, he knows Sebastian wouldn't lie to him about insisting his brother truly died. As we all know, once something has been truly lost it can never return. The closest thing O!Ciel has to his brother, is the version of him that exists only in his memory. He thought of his brother as this overwhelmingly sweet and kind, charismatic would-be leader, the unwavering pillar of strength, someone who was 'stronger' than he was. The stronger of the pair, the one who would know better about everything, the one to really get things done, when things seemed impossible. O!Ciel formed an entire new sense of self around this idealized version, of R!Ciel in his head. I'm just saying... while he may genuinely have an idea of who his brother was in his head, that's probably not who Ciel was, in reality. ... However. Will this reality come to light, and if he ever is forced to confront that in a meaningful way, will he accept it? I want to know. Because O!Ciel is more than just an imitation. He's all, authentically himself, all of who he truly is. He's exactly the person he wants and chooses to be. Sad. Anyway. Happy birthday to them both, cheers to the upcoming year and all it brings to this series.
