Today I need not travel to the Arctic region. It has come visiting. I did get 1°f at the start and 4°f at the end. Wind chill well below zero, but buffered and tempered by the wooded land. Sunlight and color pristine... And just as beautiful in black and white. My travel and activity still considerably hampered by a knee injury, I am doing the one outdoor Winter pleasure I am currently allowed -- cross country skiing. Smoothly gliding along the virtually empty trails, thinking of happier, more peopled days, it was hard for me not to stop frequently to take pictures. Long shadows, bright skies, and white snow cut gently by the dark spreading forms of trees made exquisite tracery every which way you looked. It was quiet, so very quiet. The deep cold reminded me soon enough to start moving again and I crossed paths with a photographer, a fat-tire biker, and another cross country skier. The cold and the hour kept many from making their way out. Cheerful, bright sun, and song punctuated the shadows. Birds --Chickadees, I think, sang a little in the distance, and the scurrying of woodpeckers along the bark, tapping methodically in their search, could also be heard--Gentle, dulled sounds on hard surfaces. The woodpeckers acted so sometimes you'd think they were talking to themselves. Too cold for squirrels. They must be in a deep sleep in their homes, though I'd seen some just a few day before. Elk nearby sat in the snow silently, taking in the clear January morning. The air -- cold...so cold it almost hurt to breath it in at first. But each degree rise and hour passing made it easier. It was a truly beautiful morning. Truly a pity more did not go out to greet it. LOOK CLOSELY... an alligator peering out of the water in a bayou near Layfayette, LA. Alligators are masters at stealth and surprise in their environment. Best have a sharp eye out when traveling in wetlands and swamps. A local took me to a less touristy area to see a bayou. A waterfall at Waterfall glen. Recent rain and snow made for some good photo opportunities along the trail, especially of the waterfall itself. 👍🏻🙂 There were few people on the trail and most were very friendly. Had a nice chat with a cross country skier. One even snapped some pictures of me at the falls. Elsewhere I had to rely on the good ole selfie stick this time. 😬 Fortunately, I was able to get a person in this shot to give a sense of proportion. 🙂 Usually, this spot is crowded, but weather kept a lot of folks at home. Hiking through a wooded section of a dune trail at Indiana Dunes State Park. The adjacent National Lakeshore area was just designated as a national park this year. The trails here run through swamp areas, a spectrum of dune features from wooded dunes to blowouts, and on a beach along the lakeshore itself. On a clear day you can see the Chicago skyline. And, like many lakeside locations, it’s never the same from one visit to the next. The variety of terrain here got me thinking about what is interesting and somewhat unique about the group Rich runs. It is the variety of activities one can partake of and the variety of locations they occur in. Many groups I’ve tried out over time are specific activity focused. They solely kayak, for example. Variety is the spice of life as they say, and it helps spice up not only options in a State Park, but opportunities in an activity group.
