So I still don't have much to say about Hero 42 yet, but there is one, single detail I wanna mention, and that's based on the hero select screen.

Now, if you somehow hadn't noticed by now, Overwatch generally sorts heroes alphabetically whenever needed. Note the Damage role starting with Ashe, Bastion, and Cassidy, then going down alphabetical order from there.

The two codenamed heroes, Venture and Space Ranger, also fit this sorting scheme. Venture is between Tracer and Widowmaker, and Space Ranger is between Moira and Zenyatta. We know that Space Ranger is just a temporary name used by developers, so don't expect her to stay there unless her final hero name still happens to fall between M and Z on the alphabet.

Applying this logic to Hero 42 though, we see them between Sigma and Winston. That make the range of first letters include S, T, U, V, and W. Now, this won't give us their final name either, but could give a hint to their codename, and thus some major part of their character. Some ideas include "Toxin" (noting their color scheme and resemblance to some old unused hero concept art), "Turtle" (hey I still stand by them basically being radioactive Bowser), or maybe even something as simple as "Spike".

Also here's the best image I could find of this being. Saw someone also compare this design to an edgy version of the pokemon Chesnaught, which is funny considering that's what I'm using in my current playthrough of Pokemon X. Either way this is definitely my "big spiky shell dudes" era.

Maybe it's not surprising that this is the hero that captivated my attention so much out of the three early teasers, considering I am a Tank main and also just love this hero's design already from this little cartoony icon. My personal hope is that they are some sort of gnarly creature, since I feel like in a game with big cool robots and hyperintelligent moon animals, the lack of some kind of mutant monster dude has... I don't wanna say bothered me, but feels like a missed opportunity. Have this guy be some Oasis experiment gone rogue that's now going wild across the world or something. I don't wanna say outright to make them another Talon-aligned tank, since now we're swimming with those. I'm similarly not super keen on them being another Junker considering how many of those are also in that role, though it'd be an easy way to explain the "mutant" theory of mine. Consider that, if we count Ramattra as Talon-aligned, every single Tank added since OW1's initial release has either been part of Talon or a Junker, with the sole exception of Orisa. I won't deny they definitely fit the look of a Junker though, and there's definitely more to that style to explore, I just want a messed up bowser guy. or gal! we don't know yet! could even be another NB character! Diversity win: this giant mutant spike monster uses they/them pronouns too!

Anyways yeah this has been an exhausting weekend in the best possible way for being an Overwatch fan, so I'm gonna hold off on more posts unless someone asks for my thoughts on anything in particular. If you want a better recap of everything discussed at Blizzcon, I highly recommend the recent video on Master Ian Gamer's youtube channel, it's like 17 minutes long and covers almost everything of note for Overwatch 2's future from today's panel and from the opening ceremony.

Questwatch really has the brainworms going...

Listen, I know it’s canon-compliant, seeing as Kiriko and Orisa shouldn’t be with Overwatch by this point, but it was cute to hear that Genji had been working on his Role Heroes’ backstory with Emily for weeks. They’re actual friends!

We could already assume Emily was part of the Overwatch family with how close she is to Winston and Mei (They are her siblings-in-law, your honor). There was that Overwatch 1 interaction where Winston invites Mei to hot pot with Lena, Emily, and Athena that was followed by an Overwatch 2 interaction where Winston says he can’t wait for the next hot pot with Mei. Then, there was also the 2018 OWL spray where they’re all watching sports on a couch. Classic Lemon Tea history right there.

What makes me upset is the fact that Emily doesn’t seem to be living at Watchpoint: Gibraltar. London Calling ended with Lena and Winston saying “We did it! We saved London!”, but we know Iggy is in danger in the upcoming co-op mission. That’s the thing that’s always annoyed me with the plot armor our heroes have. You’re telling me that Lena and Emily have been living safely in London for over five years while Talon has Lena on a hit list???

On one hand, a bit of angst where Emily says her goodbyes to Lena would make me cry, in a good way. (Their love will persevere through anything, damn it!) We see how appreciative Emily is of Lena’s vigilantism in London Calling. She would give up having her girlfriend by her side for the betterment of the world. Also, I love the idea of Mei being subjected to Lena being a sobbing mess without her girlfriend in the crew quarters. On the other hand, Emily is not safe in London. Period.

Let me make one thing clear: I do not want Emily as a hero. Ever. Not only do I not want the possibility of Lena and Emily killing each other (it’s heartbreaking enough with Winston), but I think Emily is perfect as a civilian. She reminds Lena what she’s fighting for, but she’s also a great parallel to Jack’s relationship with Vincent. Jack forgot what he was fighting for, putting his duty above all else, and distanced himself from everyone. Emily is the reason why Lena kept up with being a vigilante, the reason why Lena bumped into Iggy, and the reason why Lena and Iggy were able to stop Kace’s uprising.

All of this is to say that I love the idea of Emily being at Watchpoint: Gibraltar with the new blood of Overwatch. It’s as safe as she’ll ever be with Lena as her girlfriend, after all. I want to see her interact with more heroes, and I guess I’m a little disappointed by the heroes playing their Role Heroes campaign. If we could get Kiriko and Orisa, who are not there in canon, why couldn’t we get Jack? Have you SEEN him being an absolute nerd over chess in the Sojourn novel? It would be a great way to show players who don’t view external media that Jack isn’t just a grumpy old man.

Also, can we talk about Adventurer Tracer’s lines? “Was your knight on holiday?” when eliminating Mercy? “Sorry, I’m the knight in this realm!” when eliminating Pharah? HELLO??? I need to see a Lemon Tea and Pharmercy double date this instant. (People can grow apart after five+ years of not seeing each other. Sorry, Gency shippers.)

I haven’t even seen the rest of Questwatch. I’m “only” tier 42 as of writing this, and I haven’t seen anyone post all the chapters in their entirety. Still, I am LIVING for all this Emily content. Now, give her a voice. Give her a 3D model. Let her show up in Story Missions. I am BEGGING.

i think the whole omnic crisis-to-omnic rights thing in overwatch is so interesting. the same beings that almost destroyed the world and killed so many people are now sentient and mostly like normal people like imagine your whole life being uprooted as a child from the omnic crisis and now you're 42 and seeing all these 'omnic rights' movements and people happily accepting them into their arms so you're just left with a constant internal war about them and you don't know what to think. you're always on guard around them because, let's be real, you don't know if or when they'll spontaneously start gunning people down, but at the same time you can see that they're trying to lead normal lives or as normal as they can be as omnics and it's like wow! i don't know. it's too bad that blizzard didn't go too far into the complexities. as far as i know they just kind of touched on it for a couple of comics and left it at that?

I think that's one of the things that I liked about the Efi-Doomfist dynamic in the Hero of Numbani novel so much. Because like... Efi has literally zero context on the Omnic Crisis, as far as she's concerned, Omnics are her friends and neighbors and friendly store owners, but Akande very much remembers the horrors of the Omnic Crisis and he is absolutely willing to pick at those scabs. Like Doomfist is like, "This residual pain that we are working so hard to work past is not only a symptom of injustice, but also our very survival instinct at work. If any of us are going to survive, we are going to have to reckon with this shit."But like... at the same time, the ability to forgive, the ability to move on and grow, that's a surivival instinct, too! And that's the whole point of Efi and Orisa and Numbani as a whole!

As far as the rest of Blizzard's addressing of omnic oppression vs the omnic crisis goes... it's been... less than satisfactory. I feel like the Torbjörn comics kind of addressed that fear of the faceless, mindless, automaton? But London Calling was *really* tone deaf. The best it had to offer was omnic funerary traditions.

For the OC asks! 1, 2, 13, 14, 25 and 26 😁

For this I’ll be using my OC Lee Bromax, my most recent D&D character, a half-orc monk!

1. Weapon of choice?

He’s a trained martial artist, so he prefers to fight unarmed. Because he busted his hands up and it never healed right, he’s incredibly skilled with his legs and feet! (He was trained in aikido before his injury.)

2. Any magical powers?

Not in the arcane sense. He’s got the power of ki on his side, letting him push his body to do cool shit every now and again. His favorite trick is Flurry Of Blows, so he can throw three kicks in six seconds. (Soon it’ll be up to four kicks and I can’t wait!)

13. What is their attitude toward losing?

Lee is a very good loser. He’s no stranger to getting knocked down, but he hears no bell until he’s officially knocked onto his ass.

14. What is their ultimate move?

He’s only level three rn, so he doesn’t have any real Monk-style Super Moves, but for now it’s Relentless Endurance. Which means that once per long rest, when he gets knocked to 0 hp, he can instead fall to 1 hp. He didn’t hear no bell.

25. Are they good at fighting in teams or do they fight alone?

Lee is used to either one-on-one, or free-for-all fights. Being in teams is a little new to him, but he’s getting used to it.

26. Any special quirks?

Like I said, he can’t punch without hurting himself these days, so he’s pushed himself to master the art of legwork-based martial arts. Aside from that, he’s rather simple as a person. (Like, biting into a whole-ass loaf of bread because he’s hungry king of simple.)

Honestly it took me a minute to remember lmao, but in all honesty I was still feeling the loss of Unus Annus and I had just gotten a solid job, so a little bit of good with the bad really

18: Do you miss how things were a year ago?

Absolutely not, my life now is far and away less detestable by my standards! I have a girlfriend, a job I know I can stand, and I’m doing far better mentally.

26: Idol(s)

If I had to guess, I’d say Ben Parker or my old man. Humble and generous men doing what they can for the people around them.

39: Favorite sport(s)

… Do eSports count? 😆 Honedtly I’d say I’m trying to get into boxing and MMA. It seems like, aside from an interesting (and rather painful) career, it’d be useful if I need it in a pinch. If we’re counting eSports tho, I’m gonna say Overwatch or Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

42: Favorite books

I don’t really have one favorite book. My favorite series growing up was Percy Jackson/Heroes Of Olympus, and recently I’ve been reading Arsene Lupin out of curiosity. My favorite short story is Call Of Cthulhu, hands down. (I’ve been meaning to read more horror anyhow.)

Underdiscovered Polygon Streams

I started compiling this list a while ago, accidentally published the draft, panicked, and deleted it instead of saving again SO here's attempt number 2! Probably not new to most folks, but some fun non-series streams that I have found while plumbing the depths of my hyperfixation. Feel free to add your own!

Best Video Game Music of 2017 Funstravaganza! Clayton and Simone play Audiosurf to the Polygon staff’s (Brian, Susana, Allegra, Pat, and Russ) favorite video game music as an end-of year celebration. I love this idea and wish they did it more years! CW for LOTS of flashing lights.

Simone and Ashley’s Overwatch Dream Date Spectacular Simone and Ashley were giving away merch and screaming. A lot. Simone is an aro queen and has no idea what constitutes a date.

It’s Jaws Time in SUBNAUTICA w/ Jenna and Clayton Jenna’s first stream! She and Clayton explore the ocean in search of big scary fish. Generally chill, a few deep-sea jumpscares. (They talked about this one on a Valheim stream recently!)

Fort Friends! Pat, Jenna, Simone, and Clayton play Fortnite like... some kind of squad that is bad at games. Some kind of... terrible squad.

Polygon’s Friday Afternoon Smash Party A rotating group of Samit, Jenna, Clayton, Russ, Brian, Simone, Allegra, and Pat playin’ Smash Bros. Closes with Yoshi Betting, which is strangely investing.

NO MORE HEROES Turns 10, with Pat and Brian One of Brian’s first streams, playing a Wii game with big nostalgia for Pat. A chill good time.

Pat and Allegra Play Spellspire - Fantasy Typing RPG Pretty much what it says on the tin. Allegra is a very good with words and Pat is there also /s The developers put in a patch in response to this stream which is delightful.

Mount Your Friends 3D - Polygon Will Reach The Peak Russ, Clayton, Brian, Jenna, and Pat cycle through playing this very silly physics-based game.

Yakuza 6 - Pat and Allegra are Doing Crimes, But Only the Cool Kinds of Crimes They play minigames and take silly selfies. Also check out this video, which they reference in the stream, where they play a silly mission with the Yakuza localization team.

Ashley and Pat Play YOSHI’S WOOLLY WORLD Part of a short-lived series called Me You and Wii U. We learn some cursed facts about beloved Nintendo characters and take a good nostalgia trip.

Pat Plays Tokyo 42 A rare solo stream; if you, like me, just enjoy listening to Pat’s voice, you’ll like this. The game has a really cool art style too.

After a year away, I can now present the 2019 AO3 Ship Stats Top 100!

This list shows the 100 pairing tags with the most fanfics posted on Archive Of Our Own as of July 24 2019. There are 69 M/M pairings, 19 F/M, 3 F/F, 5 Gen and 4 Other. (Please note that on AO3, ‘Name & Name’ indicates platonic or familial ‘Gen’ relationships, while ‘Name/Name’ is used for romantic and sexual pairings.)

After an insanely long time, 3 full- and countless partial- visual redesigns, 2 ability reworks, no less than 4 commissioned art pieces and a lot of other new OC’s in the meantime, I can finally, at long last, present; Kefilwe Naidoo, AKA Firestarter!

She was one of my very first Overwatch OC’s, the second (or technically third) one I ever made, and can you believe it, in the 3-4 years it’s taken me to give her a decent redesign, the Overwatch Devs STILL haven’t added a black woman of their own to the game, crazy huh?

Anyway, her long awaited officially revamped stats and backstory are contained, below~

Real Name:  Kefilwe Naidoo

Alias:  Firestarter

Role:  Damage  /  Job:  Area Control, Armour Busting and AoE Healing

Primary Weapon:  Pyroclast Flamethrower

Ammo:  180  /  Reload Speed:  1.75 seconds  /  Ammo Consumption Rate:  22 per second

Damage:  6 per point of Ammo  /  DPS:  132 + 25  /  Range:  8M forwards, 5M across (At max range)  /  Attack Type:  Flat Fan Spray

Primary Fire, Flame Spray:  Spray fire out in front of Kefilwe in a wide, short range fan. 

Special:  Kefilwe’s Pyroclast solution sticks to enemies, burning them continuously even after they are no longer being directly hit by the fire stream. Further, the Pyroclast eats through metal, causing all of Kefilwe’s damage (including abilities but not quick melee) to not only ignore the damage reduction of armour, but to be doubled against it.  /  Damage Over Time (Burning Damage): 25 per Second  /  Burn Duration: 3s after last direct contact with Pyroclast fire

Ability 1, Fireball:  After a short cast time, fire a very large ball of flames in the direction you are facing, piercing all barriers, constructs and enemies in it’s path. The Fireball only stops upon head-on contact with a natural wall, or after travelling 85M, at which point it explodes into a large AoE blast.  /  Projectile Size: 3.5M Orb  /  Projectile Travel Speed: 22.5Mps  /  Cast Time: 0.4s  /  Explosion AoE: 12M  /  Damage (Contact): 85  /  Damage (Explosion): 50  /  Cooldown: 8s from Firing

Ability 2, Pyro-Manoeuvres:  Perform one of two manoeuvres which can both leave damaging fire in their wake. Follow-up with Primary Fire - Dash forwards leaving a trail of fire behind you which lingers for 4s. Or Follow-up with Secondary Fire - Leap upwards and forwards, causing a small blast of fire around you, both when you jump and when you land. Can hold up to 2 charges.  /  Movement Speed (Both): 13.5Mps  /  Damage (Dash Trail): 30 per Second during contact (+Burning)  /  Damage (Leap/Landing Blast): 45 each (+Burning)  /  Dash Trail AoE: 2M Width, 10M Length  /  Leap/Landing Blast AoE: 5M  /  Cooldown: 8s per charge

Ability 3, Fire Wall:  Erect a wall of fire 4M wide and 7.5M tall, up to 15M away from Kefilwe. Any part of the wall not touching the ground when it is created instantly sputters out. Allies can pass through the fire unharmed, but enemies who do so are damaged as well as burnt, and enemy attacks which pass through the wall have their damage reduced.  /  Duration: 5s  /  Damage per Second: 20 + 10% of Enemy’s Max HP + Burning  /  Damage Reduction: -25%  /  Cooldown: 12s from Use

Ultimate, Inferno:  Unleash a huge blast of fire which quickly radiates out from Kefilwe in a cylindrical pattern. Enemies who pass through the fire take damage as well as being burnt and briefly slowed (For the remaining duration of the ult), and allies who do so are healed over time (For the remaining Duration of the ult). The cylinder expands at a rate of 3.5Mps + 1 for each second the ult has been active, and is 14M high. Kefilwe's speed is halved for 0.65s while the ult is cast, after which the AoE is locked in place, but Kefilwe can resume normal movement.  /  Duration: 6.5s  /  Damage (Contact): 125 - 10 for each Second the ult has been active + Burning  /  Healing: 45 per Second  /  Enemy Slow Effect: -25%  /  Required Charge: 1950

Backstory:  A young girl when the first Omnic Crisis began, Kefilwe was originally never expected to join the fight, but a year into the Crisis when a wave of Bastion units came to Pretoria in unexpected and undefeatable droves, many children like her were given little choice but to adapt to their new grim reality.

Skirmishes raged between the malevolent Bastion units and the then-new South African Front-line Defence Force at the cities edge. With each passing day the threat of annihilation grew, and Kefilwe, a budding young chemist, turned her mind to finding a way through the Bastion Units’ mighty armour. 

By the time she was fourteen she had done it, her Pyroclast Solution, a special chemical compound which when set ablaze was able to eat through most any metal with ease. She joined the S.A.F.D.F. and began making headway with the Bastion problem, by the time international forces responded to Pretoria’s need for assistance, only half-functional, terribly melted stragglers were left.

Now, the world descends into chaos once more; Omnic uprisings, political assassinations, all out wars, some even saying a second Omnic Crisis is on the horizon. So Kefilwe has made the choice to don a new suit, and prepares to do what is needed of her, once again.

i impulse bought guitar hero live bc i thought i'd treat myself since i put off playing that game for years bc id heard bad reviews so i didnt wanna pay full price and be disappointed so i waited until it was much cheaper. but anyway i still wasted £22 on this absolute garbage. i knew it would be bad but i didn't expect it to be like, offensively bad.

i could handle the weird new controller and even the updated (i.e. pop punk bullshit) song list if it wasn't for the fact that the entire gameplay is the cringiest thing and makes you feel almost insulted for playing it. not to mention that what i didn't realise was that in late 2018 they got rid of an entire mode because the game was doing poorly and they took their servers down. so there is now not even any online element to it and the entire song list is reduced to about 42 songs.

but anyway catch me putting my clown shoes on because my favourite games are guitar hero and overwatch and i'm a franchise cuck apparently
