Hi lovelies,
‘Carmen et Error’- A Poem and a Mistake (aka my Instagram bio). Anyways this quote just makes me laugh every time I think about it because, of course, it belongs to no other than Ovid. I know he says some questionable things, but he writes it so nicely and I like to think that he was just in a silly goofy mood. Anyways, if you hadn’t guessed yet, todays post is all about the Roman poet Ovid. This post is also for @morallyunethicalintellectualtax because it’s her birthday and she is Ovid’s biggest fan, the ultimate Ovid apologist if you will.
Publius Ovidus Naso (also known as Ovid) was a Roman poet born in 43 BC and is most famously known for his works Ars Amatoria and Metamorphoses. He was born to an old and wealthy family in a small town about 90 miles away from Rome. His family must’ve been pretty well to do as his father was able to send both Ovid and his brother to Rome to be educated. Like almost every other poet ever, Ovid had daddy issues, and despite his fathers disapproval, he neglected his studies in favour of writing poetry. Relatable king.
As a member of the Roman gentry (above the plebeians but not quite at the rank of the senate) Ovid was marked out for an official career and even held some minor judicial posts. He soon decided, however, that he was not suited to this position and abandoned his official career to pursue poetry full time. Literally everyone was kind of confused by this decision because he really did have the makings of a great politician. Indeed, when Augustus became the emperor he tried to recruit Ovid as a politician, but Ovid turned the offer down so he could write his poetry instead.
The first work that he published was the Amores (The Loves), which was met with immediate success, and was very shortly followed by the Heriodes (Epistles of the Heroines). Fun fact, it’s because of the Heriodes that a lot of people consider Ovid a proto-feminist and therefore take a feminist reading to works such as Book 3 of the Ars Amatoria, saying that the book is meant to be seen ironically. All of his works seemed to reflect the pleasure seeking company that came with his position as a well established poet. Details of his life can be found in his autobiographical poem Tristia (Sorrows).
With his position amongst the poets secured, Ovid began to move on to more ambitious works like the Metamorphoses and Fasti. The Metamorphoses was almost complete when his life took a complete 180 and he was exiled, by Augustus, to Tomi (near Constanta, Romania). The exact reason for his exile is still unknown, but Ovid states that it was because of a ‘poem and a mistake’. It is widely accepted that the ‘poem’ was the Ars Amatoria (The Art of Love), which was a controversial set of three didactic poems, instructing on the art of affairs. Given Ovid’s popularity, this was detrimental to Augusts’ programme of moral reform (the Lex Julia) which outlawed infidelity and encouraged childbirth. The ‘mistake’, however, is less agreed upon. Ovid insists that what he did was worse than a crime but that it was a mistake made by an error of his judgment. Some suggest that his exile was due to his affair with the granddaughter of Augustus- Julia (for whom the Lex Julia were named)- as she was also exiled at the same time. I just want to say that if his exile was because he was sleeping with the emperors granddaughter after whom the laws were named, it is the ultimate ultimate slay, and also biggest fuck you. I love it. However, his exile was the milder form (called relegation) and it did not include the confiscation of property or loss of his citizenship. His wife, who was also born to a rich family, remained in Rome to safeguard his interests and to intercede for him.
Despite Augustus banning all of Ovid’s work from public libraries, the immense popularity that Ovid enjoyed during his lifetime continued after his death. From around 1100 onward, Ovid’s fame (which had eclipsed slightly during the Early Middle Ages) began to rival, and on occasion, overtake Virgil. The apparent ‘Age of Ovid’ began in the 12th and 13th centuries, where his work were seen not only as entertaining, but as educating, and his works were taught in schools. His popularity grew during in the Renaissance, particularly amongst humanists who wanted to recreate the classical approached to thought and feeling. The appeal of his writing to the renaissance audience was because it offered an accessible look into Greek mythology and also because of the humanity of his writing. Literally, read the Metamorphoses, it’s sympathetic and heartbreaking and sensual and just amazing.
Anyways. There you have it. A quick fire introduction to Ovid. I think it’s pretty hard to do any justice to his works without just telling you to read it, so yeah everyone go read some Ovid. Happy birthday @morallyunethicalintellectualtax and I hope you all have a lovely rest of your weekend <3

So first on the block is Tarsicia! So here is what she looked like as of Personal Story! Didn't have her Olmakhan horns at the time, so these are the horns she had then. I tried to use skins that we had at the time, didn't bother doing that with colors though. On to the information!!!
She's a run-away cub from a Flame Legion outpost, doesn't hide her origin either, so she had a slightly more difficult time in the fahrar—the Blood Legion took her in at Blood Keep. Sargeim Ghostweld took care of her wounds—countless times—and eventually, she started giving back as good as she got. She got an addition to her reputation as being a Flame Legion cub, she was a bit of a pyromaniac herself. All unintentional, mind, when she got highly emotional, her Guardian flames would burst forth and take little heed in sparing her target.
Ended up at the Black Citadel to further her lessons as a Guardian, to try and get some control over her emotional state as well. At this time, her point of view of the world was very black-and-white; not so much in the good-vs-evil sense—though that is in there somewhere—but in the traditional Charr vs Humans and the Three Legions vs Flame. Think…kind of like a Paladin?
Got Rytlock's attention in the same way as story—the fight with Duke Barradin's ghost; the Ghost warband lost fewer members than the majority that was lost in story, however. Vuddat Ghosthammer, Ovidus Ghostreave, Zilol Ghostblade and Dolabella Ghostsoul were the ones she had the most interactions with. Out of the four, she got along best with the old and grumpy Ovidus, a Warrior and their Legionnaire.
The fight with the Duke left Ovidus gravely injured, so much so that he was "forced" to retire—he wouldn't spread it around, but he was ready to retire anyway. He chose Tarsicia as his replacement; Vuddat almost instantly challenged her for the role, to the death as his honor dictated. He was five years her senior, more experienced, and Ovidus' second-in-command at the time, so he had thought he was a shoo-in. Rytlock oversaw the fight, Tarsicia fought him to the point where Vuddat surrendered, and because of her morals (and not wanting to lose more bandmates), she turned her back on him to head to the side of the ring. He—of course—attacked her back and her Guardian flames completely engulfed him.
If we're being honest, the first time Tarsicia met the others in Lion's Arch, she was very skeptical—more so at old bridges being mended. But she also didn't care for any of them at first glance, very "judging the book by the cover" of her. Izar and Oiba were both very aloof, keeping to themselves. Nilo and Emrys were already talking up a storm with one another. And Nicoletta seemed to be a mixture of both.
She met Nicoletta again when they met up with their mentor—a group mentorship under Forgal. They found out after his death that Forgal had requested the both of them despite the fact it would double his workload. Nicoletta, she found, was actually shy and a bookworm but chose the Vigil to help her assertiveness and confidence. Tarsicia took her under her wing for that bit.
The dungeons were how she slowly got to know the others, though she did end up getting to know Nilo more quickly; twins, she found, were often attached at the hip. Nilo was the more confident/loud twin, but he had the problem of being overly confident as well. (Hint to his missing hand.) Izar, as it was, just held himself back out of fear of further abandonment. Raven eventually convinced him to try. Emrys and she bonded over professions, believe it or not, seeing as he was endlessly curious about her Guardian abilities. Oiba was the last she got to know—another shy sort—seeing as she mostly socialized with her pets when her nose wasn't buried in her research. But one of the things she was researching—and Tarsicia agreed to help with—is Guardian flames and how do they choose what they burn.
Claw Island was…hard. At least leaving it was. Izar and Emrys both had to hold her back as their mentors pulled the doors shut behind them. She wanted to go back and fight with them, not leave them. Still, she recognized their courage and sacrifice. Nicoletta often used the excuse that she was sad and needed comfort to curl up in Tarsicia's paws, but they both knew that it was Tarsicia that needed the comfort.
Trahearne… She had some misgivings of. He was a Necromancer, why couldn't he have done more in Orr. But when she saw the chaos of a fully-stocked, "natural" Risen environment, she quickly understood the magnitude of their sheer numbers. Still, it took until the cleansing for her to have true respect for him.
Zhaitan felt like a sigh of relief once the Elder Dragon fell, like they had been given more time. (lol) This was the first push of magic that hit them, and it affected them all like a terrible cold after the fight. Tarsicia was left with an awareness of her friends'—they're friends at this point, not yet a guild—locations and general state of mind. Helpful, but she didn't reveal this until Heart of Thorns when they got separated. As time went on—and more magic was absorbed—she's been able to add connections.
But that's jumping in time! So we'll stop with the ending of Personal Story for now. More details will be added in here and there, of course, once we have everyone to the end we'll start again and go on with Living World Season One stuff!

the book for my political science review has been so widely well received it makes my chest swell with pride. my subject teacher even set my review aside and re-read it taking time to read each line and commend me later on. the most obvious indication to someone liking your writing is that they read it at all. and to think it was just the first draft I had to write so rushedly minutes before class because I was busy the day before.

Grandpa’s dancing again…
[Video Description: Three Transformers original characters, on a blue Hawaiian floral patterned background. In the foreground is Ovidus, a wide mech, colored with shades of orange and dark green, with square blocks of bright green on his legs, crotch, and chest. He is dancing. In the background is Ramrage standing behind Rattleroad. Ramrage is a tall pink and green bot, with rounded bits of kibble and blue eyes. She is giving Ovidus a thumbs-up. Rattleroad, a short, black and grey mech with glowing accents of purple, is facepalming and frowning. Saxaboogie by Harry Bluestone plays, and in the video, Ovidus is reflected and moved back and forth to the beat. The video abruptly ends as Ovidus is flipped rapidly over and over again. /end ID]

🎈 for everyone!
[ 🎈 ] does your muse have many regrets? what are they?
Luce:
She doesn’t have anything big hanging over her shoulders, rather, she has little things. Little injustices that she has seen and been too afraid to stand up against. Even if they weren’t her own injustices to deal with, she still holds them.
Ovidus:
He regrets many things. He regrets not making his criticism of Functionism the main point of his works. He regrets not being able to write more before his exile. He regrets not being able to say goodbye. He regrets not being able to see how the war started.
Rattleroad:
She regrets not defecting sooner. She could have just grabbed [UNNAMED OC] and left the war forever. She hardly believed in the Autobots anymore, it was clear that no one was completely right in this war.

The Sacking of Haeadra
For details and context on this work, click “Keep Reading” since it’s long! Artwork and characters © @moonstalkerwerewolf. Please DO NOT repost or remove the source and comments!
After suffering the hefty loss of his army at the Battle of Laagos, the Alleryian warlord Ovidu captured Galda using demonic constraints with the help of two other lords, knowing his wife was interested in dark magics and wished to learn Death Magic from tormenting its user to use in taking the rest of Illidiean after its Order fell in the Battle of Arvana. He and the remnants of his army settled in the fotress of Haeadra, where he planned to use as a base for the conquest of Illidiean's North. Freed by an ally within the fortress, Galda single handedly went on a calculated battle for revenge, taking out the Lady for tormenting her, and ultimately facing down the lord himself after unworldy, unholy creatures made from remnant life force tore through Haeadra's ramparts. He stood in the keep hall alone, facing off against a witch who seemed to emanate death itself.
Decided to go ahead and draw some more scenic, story based art! This piece commemorates a past event from long ago, but I wanted to at least try to draw Galda in the past, being well...pretty horrifying. As much as she is a complicated character who isn't really black-and-white or even really evil, when she's been messed with, during dark times, and when push comes to shove, she's a terrifying force to be reckoned with.

A LOUIS-PHILIPPE GILT-METAL TABLE-SEAL
probably Paris
circa 1840
It is called a wax seal "etui", French for "case".  The stamp itself is beautiful, but the wonderful surprise when one opens the end of the seal, are 14 double sided stamps that are interchangeable with the head of the seal. Stamped pomponne seal of rectangular section stamped with flutes and foliage, the handle stamped with a classical bust titled OVIDUS, birds and putti, the upper part fitted with a drawer containing over twenty alternate seal matrices, the bevelled top chased with trelliswork and foliage.

torment. it has been derived from the old Latin word ‘torque’— to twist. i feel my heart twist and wrench as I think about it. I am tormented by these glimpses of the past and into my own mind. the path to destruction i had once paved, is it time to walk on it?
now love is another name for torment. and I stand here cowering at the face of what names itself to be mere prelude. what bold words!
and what I want? to return to that primitive cave. to wake up at the chirrup of sweet-sounding hummers. to live for the taste of life and then to leave this world once again as the sun sets—once again. i simply want to smile at the light shining down on me.
but no! i must lay waste here tormented by trivial things I wish oh i wish I had no care for but alas! pardon my dramatics but the situation is grave for my perils outnumber my pettiness and if I shall suffer then God forbid if I suffer in silence for even one day!

Making of Blue Death Series
Like every February of the year soon I will start a new canvas for the Blue Death Series in the Feralia holidays,
this time reveals more detailed the why it was chosen for this month for work this project, Anyway, good reading:
Tumblr media
"Feralia were ancient Roman public holidays that were celebrated each year in February.
As Ovidus recalls in the second book of Fasti, the term "Feralia" was etymologically linked to the custom of "bringing" (in Latin: fero) gifts to the dead. In the Feralia, in fact, Roman citizens carried offerings to the graves of their deceased ancestors, which consisted in the delivery, over a clay vase, of garlands of flowers, ears of wheat, a pinch of salt, bread soaked in wine and dissolved violets; additional offers were also permitted, but the dead were appeased only with ritual offerings.
These simple offerings for the dead had been introduced in Lazio perhaps by Aeneas, who had poured wine and violets on the tomb of Anchises.
Tumblr media
Ovid narrates that once the Romans had neglected to celebrate the Ferallies because they were engaged in war, the spirits of the dead had come out of the graves, screaming and wandering the streets angrily. After this episode, reparatory ceremonies were prescribed and the horrible manifestations ceased."
