With Ryoji‘s Fortune link and him entrusting Hamuko with his fears regarding the future, that everything nice has to be over quickly, that he fears losing her a lot, I often wondered how much of his anxiety and depressing thoughts Ryoji actually keeps to himself when he is alone since he often implies that he holds back (‚What am I saying‘ or him searching for some distraction to not make her sad).

The P3P fanbook describes that Hamuko sees that there is a shadow on Ryoji‘s soul which is why I liked that his Fortune link really incorporated this part of his soul quiet well.

going by this translation of the p3p fanbook interview the music in game is meant to be what the protagonist is listening to in their headphones which is neat (and also makes sense with how they're listening to burn my dread last battle in the opening before the dark hour) but also doesn't make sense because of the dark hour making any technology that doesn't have a plume of dusk in it not work, so the clear solution to this is that they somehow stumbled upon a couple of plumes of dusk at some point and just decided to put them in their headphones & mp3 player for some reason

I always get so confused when people use this screenshot to argue that Naoto is %150 cis cause there are other screenshots that are much more concrete to show Naoto as cis. Cause like???? Naoto comparing that they will naturally become an adult with time (something they very much want to become and be seen as) with no matter what they will never be seen as a man (something the game tries to tell us that they don’t want to be a man???), very much implies that Naoto does want to be seen and recognized as a man???? Hell even if they did fully medically transition to being a man, a lot of Japanese society would still not recognize Naoto as one. In the P3P official fanbook they even have the trans woman from the beach listed as a man.

She has very obviously fully transiotned and yet the game, and players still treat her as a man.

Erica from Catherine in the OG guide book is listed as a man (yes i understand that it could have been an error as Boss is listed as female), but from Atlus’s track record and the above p3p guide book, I’m guessing that Erica being listed as “male” was done purposely (as a side not they wrote her deadname “Eric” in katakana so there’s no mistake that was on purpose, and that yes the creators very much treat Erica as a man)

Like I get what Persona 4 was going for, I get that the message they were trying to convey was that woman can be detectives too. I fully understand that Naoto is a cis woman in canon. But so many people will post the above screenshot as a “Gotcha!” moment tp “prove” that Naoto never wanted to be a man, when it actually kinda implies the opposite?? idk im willing to hear anyone out arguing the opposite but like thats what it seems like to me???

Persona 3 FES Fanbook: Memories of Him

This short story, by the writer of most of the official P3 novels, takes place directly during The Answer (right before the final battle) and features, among other things:

Aigis taking Metis to the rooftop to talk to her about “Him”, since she always looked lonely whenever they mentioned him. They sit on the bench where he “fell asleep”.

Metis getting a little jealous since Aigis looked so happy talking about him. Then Metis wonders if Aigis’s desire to fight isn’t born out of obligation due to her promise to him. Aigis explains then that her desire to protect SEES and the world isn’t a “substitute” for her promise to protect him, but simply “The people he protected, I want to protect them as well. It’s as simple as that.”

Yukari acknowledging Aigis and Leader were the closest to each other: “You’ve become really human-like, Aigis. Just like I thought, it’s because of his influence, huh? I hate to admit it, but you were the one closest to him.” 

Aigis noticing that going to the rooftop on her own and thinking about him used to be painful, but she feels better now sharing this with everyone.

His soul showing up at the end to give Aigis courage, and a reference to Aigis’s Rank 10 event.

Persona Club P3 Book: The Catastrophe for Quiet Him

The story is from Leader’s POV and focuses on him and Aigis, so it’s hard to summarize it without leaving out important details. Basically, he can be bad at communicating but he thought things were okay as they were; until Aigis gets hurt because of it.

It features:

Aigis coming to his room to ask him something.

Leader wanting to ask her if he had said something wrong.

Leader inwardly freaking out when he realizes Aigis hasn't been to class.

Yukari tearing him a new one because he 'hurt' Aigis and saying Aigis wanted to "lovingly cook" something for him.

Aigis worried about Leader's eating habits and making him a bento.

Leader not caring about people talking behind his back because he was too busy thinking of wanting to apologize to Aigis.

A clueless Aigis demanding he apologize to the person in question because "You are my precious person. However, I am unable to abide any behavior that might result in you hurting someone."

Leader nervously asking Aigis if he had hurt her, and then thinking that "Aigis’s words just then pierced my heart 100 times harder than my classmates’ accusations" when Aigis shoots down his concerns point blank.

Leader finding Aigis's cooking delicious and smiling happily as he tells her as much, much to Yukari's and Junpei's surprise.

At the end of the p3p official fanbook(the one with the character blogs) there's sheet music for both burn my dread and memories of you.

The P3P fanbook describing that Ryoji is often crying on the inside and that Hamuko sees the shadow on his soul really changed my view of him (along with him being so extremly multifaceted in his Fortune link) since I think that crying without wanting to show is the most desperate way of crying. This is also why I see Hamuko as very heroic since she senses pretty quickly that she needs to support him.

I love when it’s emphasized that two people really understand each other’s psyche and mental state. It’s why I particularly like these three relationships.

Maki and Naoya both learn through each other that it’s normal to have multiple selves. They both grow thanks to this.

Jun wants to be saved by Tatsuya during his redemption arc in IS and Tatsuya always considers Jun’s psyche. Even in EP Tatsuya is still worried about Jun’s psyche.

Hamuko is able to see the shadow on Ryoji’s soul according to the P3P fanbook and sees that he actually has many different sides. Ryoji knows exactly that Hamuko isn’t as happy as she always pretends to be (Stepford smiler trope) and fears that he will make her sad.

objects to be able to cope with a harsh life

Do you have favorite objects/items in the Persona series?

My favorites regarding the execution are these since they help the characters really well to cope with painful experiences: 

Manga Naoya‘s backstory regarding his earring.

It was a good way for him to differ between him and his deceased twin Kazuya and made the effect of Shadow Naoya/Kazuya looking like Kazuya as if he were alive very strong. It also makes me think how Naoya must cope with the fact that his twin will never come back for a lifetime but that he also has to be strong to live his life by himself now.

Tatsuya and Jun‘s gift exchange is a given for a favorite especially how it resembles the Apollo and Hermes staff and lyre gift exchange and also how it shows how connected they are with each other.

Since mythologically Hermes and Apollo remained close after the gift exchange and after Apollo forgave Hermes for his antics it shows that Tatsuya when Jun joins wants to support and believe into Jun‘s redemption.

How the items influenced Tatsuya‘s initial Persona Vulcanus (resembles a lighter) and Jun’s Ultimate Persona (since this Persona is a combination of Cronos (father issues and Aquarius’ old ruler being Saturn) and Chronos the god of time (in reference to the watch)) was great as well.

Maya‘s Mr. Bunbun/Usagi-san fits her Cancerian nature of living in the past due to immediately reminding her of her father.

It also fits her moon theme (Cancer, Artemis, her apartment being in Lunar Palace) due to the moon rabbit/Jade Rabbit story. The Jade rabbit is also the companion of the Chinese moon goddess Chang‘e (which fits Maya‘s Asian theme her initial Persona Maia from the Pleiades got an Asian appearance due to also referring to Zhinü from the Qixi (Chinese version of Tanabata) legend who also has six sisters just like Hermes’ mother Maia from the Pleiades also has six sisters).

Also Maya‘s handle in EP is rabbit.

Then there is Ryoji‘s ring shaped in moon form which I also loved:

There was something very touching about seeing Ryoji (who basically doesn‘t have anything) going to the souvenir stand in Kyoto after spending time with Hamuko at Kamogawa riverbank and then next time you see him at Chagall he tells you why he bought it.

Then when him pretending to be human doesn‘t work anymore since his true nature was revealed and he has to leave for good after being spared he gives the ring to leave something behind that he was human for a short while. To me it was a symbol that you accepted him (the P3P fanbook mentions that Hamuko sees that there is a shadow on his soul which explains how thoughtful she is around him in his s-link) and that despite the brief time the interactions with him were important and not in vain.

I think Ryoji is way too often maligned by many P3 players just because he is unfortunately tied to the antagonistic side. He in his P3P s-link turned out to be very versatile in such a short amount of time (flirty, bright, funny, gentle, sweet, depressed, has a shadow on his soul like mentioned in the P3P fanbook, empathetic, feels much guilt etc.) and genuinely believed into his fake Ryoji identity during his amnesia and suffers the more his memories are triggered.

His arcana is Fortune in P3P since it in his case represents that at first he seems to have every opportunity from a future, to friendships, even a romance if you pursue it etc. But in the end his arcana ends up reversed merely because of his identity.

I really thought he turned out to be very interesting in P3P and he is a good successor regarding similarities/parallels of Maki who was a grey character and Jun who had a good redemption arc.

Kasumi musings Spoilers for P5R:

Her third Persona Ella エラ is written like Lily James‘ character Ella from the Cinderella live action.

Ella is used in modernized versions as Cinderella‘s actual name which was distorted similar to Sumire‘s real name.

It‘s kinda interesting that ‚Kasumi‘ has similarities to the living in delusion plot from Maki (Ideal Maki), Jun (as Joker with his false memories), Ryoji (his entire Ryoji identity) with the Sumire reveal. Plus she has a Kandori expy with Takuto.

She has guilt feelings like Maki, Jun and Ryoji.

Sumire is bound to Takuto due to her sister like Maki is bound to Kandori due to her lack of a father figure.

Also both real Maki and Sumire get updated portraits.

The thing with the mole (real Kasumi having one and Sumire not) reminds of manga Naoya having the earring and Shadow Naoya/Kazuya not since Kazuya  looks like how Kazuya should look if he were still alive. Also one twin dying from a car accident is also directly taken from the NaoyaxKazuya story.

Moles were also important in Maki‘s story since all Makis have the same mole next to their mouth.

Ryoji has his mole under his eye since Pharos has one as well.

Like real Kasumi Ryoji has a 泣きボクロ/泣きぼくろ naki bokuro, a tragedy tear like mole. P3P fanbook mentions that Ryoji‘s mole that he even had in early concept art made it perfect to undermine him being star-crossed and doom his romance path with FEMC right from the beginning. Thus in real Kasumi‘s case I think that it portrays that she was doomed to die young.

There are also similarities to Rei and also a bit of Adachi (with the unusual links). Even Nanjo and Yamaoka with the being beside someone even after dying.

If you would ask me Sumire mostly seems to act like a Maki expy with the Takuto plotline, she looks like FEMC and has her appetite but also has the lies about her actual identity like Ryoji.

Also on Azathoth:

Nyarly is said to be his son and most importantly his messenger.

They have the same agenda and it was actually really the closest thing they could have to Nyarly somehow in the game.

I think it was an ok inclusion. Nyarly was introduced as Kandori‘s Persona in P1 and later on in P2 they went really into Lovecraftian themes. It leaves room for future games to include Lovecraft more again.

I have always loved how Ryoji's mole actually has a meaning for his character design.

Not only does it parallel Maki, it also has a tragic meaning.

Maki's kid forms Mai and Aki shared the same mole as Maki for plot reasons just like Pharos and Ryoji share the same mole.

The P3P fanbook mentions that Ryoji's mole is a 泣きボクロ/泣きぼくろ naki bokuro (tragic/tear mole). It's usually portrayed under the left eye in manga/anime and is based on the superstition that the person who has it is bound to cry a lot, have a harsh life, to be sentimental and to have a tragic love life. It's supposed to portray him kinda perpetually crying on the inside and he mentions that he is about cry several times in his s-link to Hamuko (also both his Japanese and English voice actors seem to have been instructed to voice Ryoji like this.) Thus yes his mole is another hint that this relationship just blows up in Ryoji's face just like his Fortune arcana.

Interestingly while Ryoji's character is based on Kaworu from Eva his name seems to derive from Kaji Ryoji who interestingly mentions that superstition once (in connection to Ritsuko).

Also notice that all the early concept artworks from Ryoji do already include the mole. It's actually pretty consistent that they kept the meaning of an unhappy life for him.

Maybe one of the reasons why I like him a lot is since I also have a naki bokuro lol.
