At first, he was a little weary, you were a marine who usually worked in shifts. But after a breakthrough from the Covenant you fought till the end. Even when everyone stayed down you got up with your last might. The Arbiter nearly killed John when you suddenly came and kept shooting to distract him. You nearly lost your life, but because of your bravery, Master Chief was able to save you and Reach.

It was then that John saw how remarkable you are. Your stubbornness made him laugh and despite your jokes being horrible, he couldn’t contain the smile that reached his eyes. The both of you started to develop a friendship, that slowly became love and later on a marriage proposal.

John is on one knee with shaky hands and fear in his eyes.

And still, after all those years, John truly felt blessed to have you in his life.

He’s used to using very light and on mission 3 hours top. Even back at reach, it takes him a while to recover and sleep. With all the torment, pain, and violence it only makes it harder to get some sleep, always staring at the ceiling until the sun rises and he gets up and does his routine.

Not only that, the nightmares are the ones that make him tremble, mutter, and scream as he wakes up. His body shaking when he remembers the blood that’s usually caked on his armor. Sometimes he can feel how drenched his hands are when he has another mission and he can’t save anyone.

He isn’t the one to speak about it, or even mention it to anyone. That’s of course, until he meets you.

You’re so soft and delicate, always a soft smile on your face when you see him. Your arms wrapping around him

(even though you can’t wrap them fully around him since he’s much bigger than you) and waiting for him to pick you up.

But when he looks closer, there is a framed picture on his desk.

It’s the two of you, him laughing down at you as you cuddle him with your cheeks red.

So when he turns around and finds you in his bed, he removes his as fast as he could his clothes until John only wears his underwear.

So when he snuggles against you and closes his eyes, it’s the first time his body feels safe, too.

He feels so safe with you, that for the first time in his life, John finally slept the whole night.

No nightmares, no pain, no violence.
