SHANGHAI - Time to head back to this incredible city. I love the culture, the people and the eclectic mix of old and new. Yes the food shown is not traditional Chinese food but it was just too good not to share. Tips on travelling solo, from my first international trip
I don’t remember many anecdotes from my first trip as it’s been a while – it was almost 10 years ago, to London. But, I do have some tips for people kicking off a jet-setting lifestyle, especially for the ones flying solo and/or for the first time. So, here you go:
 ·         Travel light – I should be the last person advising you on this as I’m a sucker for clothing – the more the merrier, but if it’s your first trip and you’re doing it alone, please don’t get those extra handbags with your mum’s pickle and chutney jars and a polythene bag full of homemade snack bars.
Bottom line: Carry just one hand bag with your passport, alternative ID proof, and other important travel documents, medicines (a small first aid kit, if necessary), a book, a scarf and wet wipes. A post on what I carry in my travel handbag will be up soon.
·         Wear that damn hat, skull cap and/or jacket, and those glasses, instead of carrying them around. Please don’t hang your shades inside your blouse or keep it on your head. There’s a reason why it’s called an eyewear, right? If you ignore this tip, you run the risk of losing one of the things mentioned above, or worse, completely miss enjoying the journey as you’re too fidgety trying to take care of them
Bottom line: Keep your hands free at all times except when you’re carrying your passport and tickets to the boarding counter or going for an immigration check.
·         Do not wear expensive jewelry, this one’s especially for all you Indian travelers, who are used to them back home. Leave them all back in the safe custody of a close family or friend because it’s not worth the effort. Nope, not even that “mangalsutra,” if you’re married.
Bottom line: You neither want to lose your valuable goods nor do you want to get stopped by the security and get embarrassed when that damn thing starts beeping because of the metal on you
Tres over it: I was once stopped at a security check because of my waist chain that I’d completely forgotten about. The woman at the counter screamed “STEP BACK” to my horror when the darn thing started beeping. They let me go only after I removed it, and went through the security check all over again.
·         If you’re going to a new place and have no friends there to receive you or help you out with stay and transport, get everything, including a cab from the airport to your hotel, booked well in advance.
Bottom line: Know how long it takes and how much it costs to get from point A to B. Don’t be taken for a ride.
 ·         Drink lots of water before, after and during the flight and don’t be lazy to use the loo. The restrooms at the airport and particularly inside an airplane may not be as impeccable as the toilets in your house, but most of them at the international terminals are clean enough to be used.
Bottom line: Even if the ones inside the plane aren’t great enough, do not hold your pee as this may lead to more complications later.
Tres Over It: I used to be very finicky about toilets and never used the ones in planes unless there was an absolute emergency. It was all in my mind. But, my very first direct flight to London from Bangalore (for 10 and a half hours) taught me that it was the worst thing to do and NOT drink enough water during a long-haul flight. I was completely exhausted from dehydration once I landed. All I could then do was rush to the hotel and crash, thus wasting a rare sunny day in London on the couch.
·         Always start your day early, no matter how lazy you are. The more time you have the more places you cover
Bottom line: Time is money.
 ·         Be friendly, but wary of overzealous strangers, who offer to take you around
The loveliest thing about any journey is about the different people you meet on the way. If you’re lucky enough some of them turn out to be the best friends you’ll make in this lifetime.
Bottom line: Exchange pleasantries, NOT numbers, especially at the first meeting. Watch, observe, stay vigilant. If you still feel benevolent enough, make use of your FB, Instagram, Snapchat (What’s that? ;) AND Tumblr account(s).
Tres Over It: Some of my closest friends are people who’ve I’ve met while travelling. We may not talk to each other every day, but we do make it a point to keep each other updated about our lives, the places we’ve traveled to, and the places we plan to travel together some day. <3 So, go ahead make that journey of yours, and meet those extraordinary people on the way, just as I have.
