“Far lights”• Lights of commercial fishing boats beyond Langoy Island are vissible from the town beach of Araceli on the first night of Pamelan Festival. There has been a clamour from coastal fisherfolks and municipal officials to increase the tariff on commercial fishing vessels benefiting from Araceli’s rich fishery stock. The measure will allow Araceleños to benefit from large scale fishery that harvests natural stock that are spawned in its community protected reefs. (ARACELI, PALAWAN, PHILIPPINES) Araceli Bay from the port area at dusk on the second day of Pamelan Festival. An inlet bordered by a long mangrove forest, the bay is a natural nursery of Siganidae (“samaral”) fishes. In 2018, the Municipal Agriculture Office of Araceli put up a prototype mariculture cage in the inner part of the bay. Species of Siganidae are being cultured to grow spawners for future full-cycle mariculture. The initiative is also getting ready to host fingerlings of Tilapia and Bangus to be distributed by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. Mariculture technology, when disseminated to proper scale, may play a buffering role in stabilising food supply for Araceleños during the lean months of the Northeast Monsoon (“amihan”) and lessen pressure on the natural fishery stock in the area during this breeding season. {Text and photo copyright 2019 S.A. A year ago yesterday, I took this first frame of the day of the first of seven mornings I would spend in the island town of Araceli off the northeast shore of the long Palawan mainland. May 20, 2019 was the first day of PAMELAN FESTIVAL, a week-long celebration of indigenous island culture and the rich bounty of the sea. Araceli is one of the sites for the coastal resource management program of WWF-Philippines and WWF-Singapore. Community based eco tourism through an annual festival and guided visits to Araceli’s islands and beaches is a way to diversify the socio-economic base of the town and buffer reliance on municipal fisheries.
