Año tras año desde que empezamos con nuestro blog hemos hecho una lista de recomendaciones para Sant Jordi. Aquí tenéis pues algunas sugerencias “per triar i remanar”:

FICCIÓN:

“Turistas del dharma” de Albert Franquesa, Ed Hermenaute

Ya os hablamos hace un tiempo de “Barcelona Minority World”, la primera novela de este autor. Ahora publica su segundo libro, en realidad una compilación de relatos de ficción inspirados en su experiencia en distintos viajes realizados a países asiáticos, latinoamericanos o europeos. Franquesa muestra personalidad arrolladora y buen oficio en estos cuentos alejados de cualquier cliché, descartando siempre lo políticamente correcto.

“Mare” de Ada Castells, La Campana Llibres.

Nos encontramos con una gran novela de reconciliación con la figura de la madre, a través de la escritura, del reencuentro con los recuerdos, las anécdotas, desde el cariño, el sentido del humor y la visión conciliadora. Ada Castells, autora de “La primavera pendent” (Editorial Comanegra, colección “Matar el Monstre” – ver nuestras recomendaciones del 2018), es más personal que nunca, y si tenéis una relación especial con vuestras madres, o la queréis tener, o queréis recordarla de la mejor manera posible, os “resonará” mucho este libro.

“Solo sombras” de Dolores Payas, Navona

Novela policíaca, de espías y mucho más, que parte de la desaparición de un prestigioso geólogo en Pekín, y cómo a raíz de ello la trama deriva en una compleja investigación. Contada con mucho sentido del humor, esta escritora que vivió temporadas en la capital del país más poderoso del mundo nos conducirá a todo un viaje de experiencias, acompañadas de unos personajes muy variopintos.

“L’ull de l’escarabat” de Anna Carreras, Llibres del Delicte.

Novela de trasfondo negro, situada en un centro cultural cerrado, donde la protagonista, una mujer desorientada y enamorada de la persona equivocada, va a compartir una noche con un escarabajo negro y reluciente, que recuerda al de Edgar Allan Poe, pero en esta historia hay mucho humor y situaciones muy surrealistas contadas con el fascinante estilo a que nos tiene acostumbrados esta autora.

“Acudits per a milicians”/”Chistes para milicianos” de Mazen Maarouf, Navona – Alianza Editorial

Libro de relatos de un autor que hemos descubierto recientemente y ha sido seleccionado para el prestigioso Booker Price. Palestino nacido en Beirut, que reside en Islandia, vivió su infancia en el Líbano de los años 80, en plena guerra, justo donde está situado este libro. La crudeza del conflicto armado, de las bombas acechando a las personas, se relativiza con la imaginación y el delicioso y original humor del escritor. Estamos ante uno de los mayores talentos actuales de la literatura árabe y universal.

ENSAYO:

“Born to run” de Bruce Springsteen, Ed DeBolsillo

Aunque hace ya un tiempo que se publicó la autobiografía del Boss, recientemente ha aparecido en formato de bolsillo. Celebramos esta apasionada y apasionante revisión de la vida de un músico único, tan imperfecta en la forma como pueda ser su arte, pero tan honesta, intensa y bella como éste. El libro acaba revelándose en cierta forma como un viaje a través de los claroscuros del sueño americano, a sabiendas por parte de quien lo escribe, que quien lo alcanza (como él mismo) es la excepción y no el común habitual.

“La conexión que nos une” de Eva Sandoval, Ediciones Urano.

Libro muy inspirador, que invita a conectar con nosotros mismos, las personas que nos rodean y nos importan, y con la vida. Hará que nos planteemos cómo nos sentimos, amamos, pensamos y vivimos. A modo de los grandes maestros orientales, que no aleccionan pero muestran, y es el lector quien elige qué camino seguir.

“Lila” de Toni Galmés y M. Àngels Cabré, Ed Comanegra

Detrás de lo que podíamos llamar nueva ola de feminismo que invade (para bien) la vida actual, encontramos no solo un movimiento político-social, sino también una fuente de creatividad de primer orden. Este libro centra su mirada en concreto en las claves gráficas de las artistas feministas, sus referentes culturales y los orígenes de su arte político, así como algunas de los principales logros de la lucha feminista mostrados en sus obras, para aprender a leer las imágenes que nos rodean con una óptica igualitaria.

“Pelea como una chica” de Sandra Sabatés y Ana Juan. Ed Planeta de Libros.

Con bellísimas ilustraciones de Ana Juan, la conocida periodista Sandra Sabatés nos hace conocer a un puñado de mujeres que han destacado en distintos ámbitos (políticos, culturales, deportivos o científicos), para ofrecerles la visibilidad que, históricamente, se les ha negado a tantas mujeres que no han tenido el reconocimiento que merecían.

CÓMIC:

“En la oscuridad” de Sara Soler y Antonio Pampliega, Ed Planeta Cómic

Relato ilustrado sobre el periplo vivido por el periodista Antonio Pampliega quien en 2015 fue secuestrado en Siria por Al Qaeda, siendo retenido por la organización terrorista durante 10 meses. Obra tan valiente como sensible, está espléndidamente dibujada por una gran artista como es la aragonesa Sara Soler.

“Sandman” de Neil Gaiman, Ed ECC-Salvat

Enésima reedición, esta vez dentro la colección “Novelas Gráficas-Vertigo” impulsada por Salvat (aunque en paralelo podemos encontrar otras ediciones en distintos formatos), de la obra magna de Neil Gaiman. Gaiman, junto a Alan Moore o Frank Miller, es uno de los máximos responsables de haber llevado el cómic popular anglosajón a un nivel de sofisticación argumental y artístico pocas veces visto antes de su irrupción a finales de los 80´s. “Sandman” (personaje principal al que alude el título del cómic, aunque existen varios secundarios que cobran cada vez mayor protagonismo a medida que va avanzando la serie) es la personificación antropomórfica de los sueños, transcurriendo la mayoría de las historias (escritas por Gaiman y dibujadas por distintos ilustradores) entre el reino de Morfeo (alias mitológico de “Sandman”) y la vigilia, entre lo onírico y lo terrorífico, entre la fantasía y la pesadilla.

TEATRO:

“La dansa de la venjança”, de Jordi Casanovas, Comanegra-Institut del Teatre, colección Dramaticles.

Magistral texto de un autor que nunca defrauda. Una expareja se reencuentra en el piso de él, y comienza a discutir sobre su divorcio y la custodia del niño que tienen en común. Guerra de egos, de reproches, de intransigencia e intolerancia, que desgraciadamente sucede con demasiada frecuencia en el mundo actual. Realista e impactante. Sobrecogedora.

“Carrusel”, de Alberto Rizzo, La Cabaña del Loco.

Primera obra publicada de este dramaturgo y director de teatro, que también dirige diversos festivales. Ésta es la historia de un circo varado, donde un estudiante encontrará a unos personajes muy peculiares que le seducirán y le harán sentir en un nuevo hogar. Un homenaje a la farándula, al circo, al teatro clásico, que trascenderá en el lector. Recuerda películas maravillosas como “El gran carnaval” de Billy Wilder o “El cielo sobre Berlín” de Wim Wenders.

POESÍA:

“Veles” de Pau Sif, Eumo Editorial, colección Jardins de Samarcanda

Este precioso poemario del poeta valenciano, también editor (Edicions del Buc), configura una serie de frescos que nos transportan a su universo. Final de un ciclo poético, “Veles” comprende una gran variedad de registros, en que cada poema tiene una singularidad muy definida, mucha personalidad y belleza.

“Reir poesía” de Silvia Siles. Autoeditado.

Actriz, directora, poeta… Silvia Siles sorprende con un poemario intimista, complejo y lleno de matices. Un viaje hacia el interior y la conexión con lo más profundo del ser. Auguramos un gran futuro a esta joven autora. El libro se puede adquirir por Amazon.

“Amors sense casa” VV.OO Angle Editorial

Primera antología de poesía LGBTQ que reúne poemas de autores catalanes de los últimos cien años como Francesc Garriga Barata, Maria-Mercé Marçal, Nora Albert, David Vilaseca, Biel Mesquida o Bel Olid. La antología viene a cargo de Sebastià Portell, autor de obras de éxito como la novela “El día que va morir David Bowie”, el libro de relatos “Maracaibo” o las obras de teatro “Un torrent que era la mar” y “Transbord”. Un joven escritor en lengua catalana pues, que nos hace descubrir algunos autores en la misma lengua (muy poco conocidos en algunos casos), que trascienden, con la indudable calidad de sus poemas, el hecho que formen parte del colectivo, al principio mencionado, LGBTQ.

Sobre librerías, tenemos estos hallazgos literarios:

“Diari d’un llibreter” de Shaun Bythell, Viena Edicions.

El entretenido diario del propietario de una librería escocesa que nos acercará al universo de los libreros. Cómo funciona el negocio, cómo es el público, cómo se vive… En Barcelona estamos experimentando un maravilloso fenómeno: se están abriendo muchísimas librerías, en forma de cooperativa o de pequeña empresa, y este apartado se merecía un lugar privilegiado.

“Llibreries” (Edición ampliada), de Jordi Carrión, Navona.

Reedición y traducción al catalán de este éxito literario internacional de 2013. Viaje a través de las librerías más importantes de la historia y del planeta, contado desde el conocimiento y la historia personal del autor como lector.

Paraphrasing pop art from art toys movement

We think that Art Toys Movement has been built upon the “paraphrase of Pop Art”, although now the myths for designers and artists are others. And when we talk about others, we talk about characters like Mickey Mouse, an icon that is really known throughout the world. For whom many feel – and express- an authentic kind of personal passion and enthusiasm without limits making him the charismatic character he is nowadays.

A period of time, this, when the impact of contemporary technology and its influence in our perception and in the possibilities of paraphrasing the icons are even greater that in the late fifties in USA and early sixties in Europe when Pop Art was born as an artistic current.

Mickey Mouse ... charismatic character that almost everyone - literally - knows because have heard about him, or has seen and read about him and his adventures since 1928 when he was born as a protagonist of animation. And that today is considered an iconic character that again and again becomes a trend, or in truth, never ceases to be. In many and very different ways. And for different types of artists and professionals.

As for many artists and designers within the artistic Trend of the Art Toys, that with all their influences, from the most pop, urban, punk style to the most surreal, ethnic, fantasy, terror, gothic, kawaii, conceptual, naive, expressionist, figurative, realistic, subversive or lowbrow, and regardless of the age of the artists and their origin, one of their recurring themes have been, and are, usually, myths of their youth, like Mickey Mouse character, that as soon as you see his silhouette you recognize.

An artistic Movement where the artists "take" the character and impose their own sensibility, paraphrasing the character themselves. Or what is the same, starting from the consideration of what the creator wanted to tell, add new reflections, those of their own look. With the pretense that afterwards in time the public and the collectors when they have that artwork in their hands also have the possibility, if they want, to interact with them, creating their own scenarios and atmospheres. Because as we say: Art Toys: More than Dis(play).

And the artists paraphrase them in the sense that being very close to the original concepts, with their own hands, they create a new artwork by giving an obvious credit to the iconic work of art. Telling their own story. Talking about themselves and their influences. Engaging a unique connection with their target public, an audience to those who show themselves as they are…regardless of where these collectors live, where in the world they are.

Nevertheless, and as we have already told at other times, when this artistic Movement of the Art Toys began to "discover" itself, we speak of an era, in the mid-nineties of the last century, in which globalization is in full “boom”, the same as the consumer culture. Time in which there is a process of clear hybridization of cultures, between the West and the East, and in which there is a great mobility of cultural products because there are fewer limitations and borders, besides that we have Internet and Social Networks. And we easily reach to all kind of public. Collectors and other professionals with whom to work.

And we are talking about a Movement or artistic Trend that although it finds its roots in Tokyo and Hong Kong, today it is already part of something culturally much bigger globally. And also more diverse and heterogeneous than in its origins.

Society is increasingly multicultural, there is a great interrelation and interaction between different countries, and at a certain moment, it is when it seems that a new kind of cultural creation begins to arrive at the market thanks to the impulse of creative people, who create and promote an art form that refers to a new language and new form of communication and contemporary artistic-plastic expression. To new forms of design and of creation, a mixture of art and toys. And that the artists themselves promote by their own means and often with the help and support of other professionals who have the same cultural references as these artists, and who bet on their work and support them in their discovery possibilities...

Artists like Coté Escrivá.

Born in Valencia, Spain, on May 22, 1982. He is one of those artists, designer and illustrator, who over the years has been creating his own personal universe from an aesthetic influenced by popular culture. An artist that has managed to bring those comics and animation series that have accompanied us throughout our lives to his own imagination, adding other influences and references coming from Pop Art, oriental and underground culture, graffiti and Street art, the tattoo art or the lowbrow or pop surrealist style.

Resulting in disparate projects, a kind of drawings, illustrations within sinister and tender or friendly, as some people say; with an aesthetic that is also provocative and burlesque. Some of them from icons of pop culture assimilated by Coté Escivá, reinterpreted, giving rise to different hybrid creations, between artistic and commercial, with characters that are familiar to all of us. Characters that are born from sketches in paper and pencil, and then are worked digitally with a graphic tablet.. Exploring the popular culture through surprising "series of mashups" of mass-public visual icons that everyone knows.

Thereby, giving rise to a type of sculptures, Art Toys, like those that the Thunder Mates brand from Hong Kong is helping to give life since this past year 2017, working on some of Coté's most iconic characters.

A mix of art, graphic design and original toys, collectible and aimed at an adult audience as Woodrow Phoenix would say

"Plastic Culture" (2006). Pieces that combine a bit of tenderness but also a high degree of ambiguity or blackness as Paul Budnitz, founder of Kidrobot, wrote when referring to the Art Toys in "I am Plastic, too" (2010).

And in the case of Coté with his artworks, in addition, we see the interior of the artist in a non-subjective way. On the contrary, he shows himself starkly inside. And inside, what can we find but bones and other viscera and elements? It´s a forthright work, merciless in a certain sense ... Artists like Coté are as if they showed their deepest, intense and heartbreaking insights, but doing it without detours or subtleties. It's as if these artists said, “I'm going to split the toy with which I've grown, interacted, and you're going to see the inside of it”…

When an artist uses a toy as a creative platform he/she is an artist who does not want to shy away from childhood. We are what we have grown and lived, and what we have been taught. We are not born with the age we now have. We have been learning and when we are children, playing is learning. And if we say that we have studied one thing or another for a specific purpose, why are we going to leave behind those drawings with which we have learned many of our values, ways of showing ourselves and certain likes, and even the way of seeing the world? Things that make us what we are...

And in the Art Toys of Coté there is always a part in which the inside of the Art Toy can be seen. We all think that toys are hollow and yet there is a character who suffers, who lives, who has a skeleton and viscera. And Coté shows it to us.

People at our age, when they see a toy, see something inanimate, that only when a child plays with it can it come alive. But the artists who make Art Toys see a part of themselves. And that's what Coté wants to show the spectator. Through that toy that twists he shows his interior. And his own inner self is loaded with images, memories, some more raw than others. Because toys are part of our memories. And we are all made up of memories that make us what we are. And the childhood of most of us is loaded with toys, comics, and all kinds of pots ... And artists like Coté what they do is bring that toy from their childhood but loaded with everything that is now as an adult. Of what he has lived.

People usually stay with the outer appearance of the toy. But look further! The toy is something else, it's life, the toy is what made you what you are. They are not something inert or silly or childish. That's why artists like Coté seek with their Art Toys that people see and discover that in reality we are that toy but with scars, with the spanks that life gives us. And in this task is Coté when he works with recognized brands such as Thunder Mates.

From a dynamic collaboration, with an open mind. Sign of our times. Where barriers do not exist, only those that we can put ourselves. And addressing a non-conformist type of collector, who does not like what is normally established. With a kind of close and not boring creations. Testubg the power of the cultural and social conventions of the spectator, demanding a reflective, mature look to the collector. Because otherwise, it would be just a Toy. And here we are talking about Art Toys. A type of work that "imitates" life, which is a reflection of the experiences of the artists and also of what surrounds them - from the cultural, social point of view...
