It was the perfect day to be outside and it was you who offered the idea of spending the day out on the water. At first, Kuko thought it would be the two of you at the beach, enjoying the sun, sand, and surf. But when you pulled up to the lake and you pointed to the boat that Hitoya was in with Jyushi, he was beginning to think he was misled.

"I thought we were going to the beach." He muttered as he got out of your car.

You shook your head with a chuckle. "Everyone is going to be at the beach. Besides, I think the lake is more fun anyways! And Hitoya has a boat! It's going to be so much fun!"

He scoffed. "I guarantee you the old man is going to make us fish for our dinner and tell terrible jokes."

"Like I said, fun!" You giggle before patting his cheek with slight condescension. "Regardless, you are going to play nice. It's not often the four of us get to hang out and have fun like this. I want today to be as fun and as relaxing as possible, because we all deserve it."

When he looked you in the eyes, Kuko couldn't help but melt a little. You were right. Hitoya was a busy lawyer, Jyushi was a busy visual kei star, he was busy tending to his duties at the temple, and you also had your own busy life. Days like today were few and far between. He supposed he could play nice for you, but only for you. If Hitoya or Jyushi tested him in any way, shape, or form, he wouldn't hesitate to attempt a drowning.

"Fine. I'll be nice." He grumbled.

You kissed his cheek and pretended not to notice his bright red cheeks. "Thank you sweetie! Now let's go have fun!"

As soon as Hitoya saw the two of you, he gave you a smile. "Welcome aboard. I'm surprised you got him to come with you."

"Nothing a little arm twisting can't solve." You wink at him before laughing. You then nod at Jyushi. "It's wonderful to see you as well, Jyushi!"

He beamed up at you from where he was sitting under his hypnosis mic umbrella, cuddling Amanda. Kuko frowned. "Why did you bring your mic?"

"It turns into an umbrella! And I burn easily in the sun." He explains.

"Right. Whatever." He rolled his eyes.

"Alright, everyone, hold on." Hitoya says before starting up the boat and leaving the harbor.

As he drove around the lake, you got out the sunscreen and began to apply it. Kuko was quick to help you with your back and you got his as well. You also made sure that Jyushi was constantly reapplying him so he didn't burn in the sun. You cracked open a beer for Hitoya and Kuko, before passing on a water bottle for Jyushi. A sigh escaped you as you felt the wind in your hair and the sun on your face. It was truly a perfect day to be out on the lake.

Eventually, Hitoya came to a stop in the middle of the lake. Kuko spoke before anyone else could. "What, are we fishing now, old man?"

Hitoya made a face. "No. I was just going to ask if anyone wanted to try water skiing or tubing. I got the stuff right over here."

Kuko perked up. "You know, I happen to be amazing at waterskiing."

You let out a snort. "Really? You?"

He shot you a small frown, though you could see the determination in his eyes. "I'll prove it!"

Before you could try to assure him that you believed him, he shucked off his loose tank top and dove into the water. Hitoya tossed him his skis and offered him a life jacket. But he refused.

"I can do this, old man. I don't need any help!" He spat, putting the skis on. "I'll show you just how amazing I am at this."

"Just don't hurt yourself." You call out to him.

"Yeah, yeah. I got this!"

When he was ready to go, he gave you a thumb's up and you alerted Hitoya to go. He started up the boat again and began to drive off. Kuko was lifted onto his feet and you were surprised to see him actually be able to waterski. You'd never tell him this but you thought he was bluffing. But he was actually doing pretty well, staying up right and even doing a few tricks. You were pretty sure he was just trying to impress you, but it was working.

It was about two minutes of skiing when Kuko hit a particularly big wake from the boat that caused him to let go of the tow rope. He flopped into the water like a fish. You signaled for Hitoya to stop and a laugh escaped you as he came sputtering out of the water.

"Hey! That's not fair! Hitoya was being reckless with driving!"

Hitoya frowned at him. "There are two things I can't stand. One, scratched vinyl records. Two, being accused of reckless driving. I wasn't driving recklessly, you're just bad at staying up. I thought you were some water ski pro?"

He scoffed as he tried to kick off the skis. "Not with your lousy driving."

You chuckle and shake your head. Standing up, you shuck off your swimsuit cover up. "Hang on, let me help you."

You dove into the cool lake water, swimming over to help him take off the skis. You didn't notice the way he was blushing as he saw you in your swimsuit. You were more focused with helping him out of his predicament. When the skis were off, you deposited them back on the boat but did not get out of the water.

"Hey, Jyushi." You called out. "Do you want to go tubing with Kuko and I?"

"Tubing?" He tilted his head to the side. "What's that?"

You chuckle before explaining. "It's like a giant raft that everyone gets on and Hitoya will drive really fast around the lake. We may or may not go flying off and into the water, but it's really fun!"

He purses his lips and shakes his head. "No, I think I'd rather stay here. But I can get you guys the tube."

"Okay, thank you!" You smile as he hands you the tube. You swim it over to Kuko. "Ready to do this?"

He grins. "Born ready."

Helping each other up, the two of you get situated before you yell out to the boat. "Okay, Jyushi, you're going to need to signal Hitoya when to go and stop. Right now, we're both ready to go!"

He nodded and signaled Hitoya. The boat started up and you were flying on the tube with Kuko at your side. You let out a scream of joy as you both careened down the lake, wind and a fine spray of lake water in your hair. The bumps along the wake from the bump knocked the two of you into each other multiple times, but you didn't care. You were having too much fun to worry about the bruises you were probably developing right now.

Hitoya made a sharp turn and the two of you were lifted into the air. While you were hanging onto the tube for dear life, Kuko went flying. You grimaced as he belly flopped loud and hard into the lake and you were glad that Hitoya stopped the boat. You sat up, trying to find his mop of red hair in the water.

When he came up sputtering, you sighed in relief. "Are you alright?"

"No! I think I'm dead!" He groaned, slowly paddling towards you. "Where did that old man learn to drive?"

"Your guess is as good as mine." You help him onto the tube and Hitoya pulls you both in.

"Well, that was fun." He chuckled, his smirk earning a glare from Kuko. He then looked up at the sky before letting out a low whistle. "It's getting to be about dinner time. We should probably start fishing."

"LIKE HELL WE ARE!"

Now, it’s not that Kuko didn’t like animals. It’s just that he was far too busy to take care of a pet. But when he noticed the little orange kitten sniffing around the temple, he seriously considered keeping it.

For starters, it didn’t have a collar. It also seemed to follow him as he did his chores. It felt like fate. Not that he’d admit that out loud. Instead he continued to work while keeping an eye on the kitten, making sure it was safe and taken care of.

When he took a break for lunch, he got a small bowl of water and fed it a bit of his sandwich. He laughed as it tried to steal more and scolded it playfully. Perhaps taking care of a cat wouldn’t be so hard. Besides, a temple cat could keep away the mice.

“What do you say?” He asked the kitten squirming in his lap. “Think you’d want to stay?”

Sure he felt a little silly for talking to it, but he swore the kitten understood what he asked. It practically purred with delight. This just made Kuko’s heart melt.

“Well, you’re going to need a name. How about-”

“Mao! Mao, where are you?”

Looking up, Kuko saw a very pretty individual looking around frantically. However, upon seeing him, they sighed with relief. He backed up a step as they bounded towards him.

“Oh Mao! There you are!” They smiled at him. “Thank you so very much for finding him! I’ve been looking everywhere for him!”

He nodded slowly. “Yeah…”

“How can I ever repay you?”

Kuko shrugged. If he was feeling more petty than he already was, he’d ask for a new temple cat from them. But he kept his mouth shut.

Looking down at Mao, they said. “Well, Mao is the runt of the litter of kittens that were born a couple days ago. I can’t give him to you. But if you want one, you can have one. I can’t take care of all eight by myself, plus their mother.”

He hoped he didn’t look too eager as he answered, “Well, this temple could use a temple cat.”

Kuko could practically see the hearts in their eyes. “Oh my goodness that would be adorable! Yes, you’re taking one now! I’ll let you pick! My house isn’t far.”

Well it got him out of work, plus he got a free kitten.

As he followed them home, he asked, “What kind of name is Mao anyway?”

“Oh, it’s Chinese for cat.”

“That’s dumb.”

“Then I probably shouldn’t tell you that I named the other kittens Cat in different languages.”

He gave you an incredulous look. “Really?”

They nodded. “Yep! Mao, Katze, Gata, Chat, Neko, Goyong-i, Billee, and Maur.”

“Wow.” He paused. “I want Neko.”
