SUPERB STICKERS

His friend had this superb PANINI WORLD CUP collection. The World Cup would be in November this year. It was super weird having it in the winter … and they all knew that FIFA were only doing that for money, and some of them knew that hundreds of people had died in Qatar, building the stadiums, basically, because of lack of health and safety and extreme heat. But they were all hyped up for it anyway – it was the world cup man, greatest glitz on earth.

 Anyway his friend’s name was Alexander and he had rich parents. That’s what gave Mick (our main character) the moral license to try and rob as many of Alexander’s stickers as possible. Mick actually wasn’t so close to Alexander: they lived on the same street, him in a smaller house and Alex in the biggest one. But Mick befriended him more closely so he could be closer to the stickers.

 I mean – who wouldn’t want them? They were glorious, shiny, sparkly. They’d play videogames in Alexander’s room. And Mick brought around litres of coke and they’d get boyhood-high on the sugar and chemicals. Mick let Alexander win on the games when they were playing each other. Then when Alexander would nip to the toilet, Mick would pilfer a sticker out of the collection.

 The first time he did it he was sure he would get caught. It was just one sticker – a player from Costa Rica, a defender … And it burned in Mick’s pocket when Alex came back to resume the gaming, and Mick said he had to go home after that game: Alex was sad to have him leave. But he got away with it. And he did the same thing again the next day: robbed one of the less illustrious players from Alexander’s collection. Then nicked another one the following day.

 And then he got greedy, and stole this Brazilian player. A midfielder, famous name. He successfully stole it … but then when he went back to Alex’s place the next afternoon, Alex had hidden his collection elsewhere. Wasn’t in his bedroom.

 They still sat down to play the games but Alex was a little subdued, and then he said,

 “Hey, Mick, did you see my Ribeiro sticker yesterday?”

 “Huh?”

 “My Everton Ribeiro sticker, for Brazil. You see it?”

 “No, I didn’t. Didn’t know you had that one.”

 Mick’s heart bombed with shame. This time he didn’t let Alex win – the latter won because Mick was all jittery-wristed. And after another couple of games he made excuses to leave again.

 Back home, in his own house, he’d hidden Alex’s stickers under his bed. Classic hiding place but one that worked. He vowed not to try and steal any more, any time soon. But, if he stopped going around to Alex’s house too soon, this would seem suspicious. So, he left it one day. And then went back to Alexander’s again, this time planning not to go anywhere near Alex’s stuff – in fact he planned to invite him out to the park to play football instead.

 When he got to the door and rang the bell, Alexander’s father answered instead. Which had never happened before. He was a portly, bald man with a clever English accent and his name was Patrick.

 “Hi there, Mick,” Patrick said.

 “Hello, sir.”

 “What’s up?”

 “Emm, I just wondered if Mick is in?”

 “Yes, he is.”

 “Cool.”

 “…”

 “So, is he in his room?”

 “Yes. He is.”

 “Can I come and see him?”

 “No, you may not.”

 “…”

 “You want to know why? He thinks you stole some of his PANINI stickers.”

 “…”

 “Did you? Take his stickers?”

 “No.”

 “Then why are you blushing? Look at you! This huge furtive blush on your face. Do you know what ‘furtive’ means?”

 “Umm. No.”

 “Away with you. Shoo. Alex doesn’t want to play with you anymore.”

 “Sorry.”

 Mick turned. He trundled down the pink gravel stones, scrunching underfoot. The leaves from their fancy trees were strewn across the driveway.

 “And don’t came back here again,” Patrick called after him, “you plebeian runt.”

 And he smashed the door.

 Mick didn’t know what ‘plebeian’ meant either. He looked it up in the dictionary. When he got back home.

The England players show only the player's heads and say England Superstar on them. There are 18 England Cards and they have 3 Champions Cards. There are 350 Cards. There are 250 Base Cards, 25 Star Players, 25 Goal Stoppers, 25 Fan's Favourites and 25 Champions. Each card has a rating in attack and defense there is also an overall rating the players are rated out of 100.

I just found the cards in my local supermarket where I also bought the stickers but don’t know which countries you can get them in
