Dashing Home for Christmas (UP, 2020)
Thanks to your mother.
Starring: Paniz Zade, Adrian Spencer,  Peter Bou-Ghannam, Andrew Bushell
Plot Synopsis: Emily is trying to get home for Christmas and encounters one problem after another. She meets Simon, a fellow traveler, who helps her a few times and they eventually join together in an effort to get to Seattle. (x)
In My Humble Opinion: Dashing Home for Christmas is the umpteenth movie that takes Planes, Trains and Automobiles and makes it a Christmas romantic comedy. The characters deal with all three forms of transportation and the shared motel rooms and frustrating conservations with customer service representatives that a Planes, Trains and Automobiles inspired movie implies. However, Dashing Home for Christmas is the most boring version of Planes, Trains and Automobiles it can be.
Every scene with a customer service representative is muted and tensionless. They are upfront with how lonely the John Candy Type B love interest character is from the get-go which means the movie lacks the surprise emotional catharsis of Planes, Trains and Automobiles. The emotional climax involves having the Steve Martin Type A character lambasted for working in a job that fires people and being “emotionless” in a way that is comical for all the wrong reasons. There’s not really shenanigans or zaniness to take part in.
I would possibly forgive this movie for being a bad rip-off of Planes, Trains and Automobiles if the romance was interesting in any way but the movie fumbles that as well. Sure, the leads go through many of the common romantic tropes from an enemies-to-lovers first meeting to being forced to share the Honeymoon Suite at the hotel, and there even is a diner scene that is very clearly intended to be a homage to When Harry Met Sally (minus the sexual references because this movie is on the UP channel). However, the leads just don’t have the verve to make any of these tropes pop. Every banter sequence they go through sounds like two robots getting through the dialogue the best they can. The emotional climax is more notable for how the male lead looks like he doesn’t have eyebrows when he takes off his A Christmas Story style glasses because they are so very blonde, than for anything romantic that happens.
There’s nothing new to see in Dashing Home for Christmas, and the rehashes the movie engages in aren’t done very well. Still, by default of not being unwatchable it manages to be the best new movie in UP’s 2020 slate. Small victories!
Watch If: You like your fries piping hot, if you think The Muppets Movie is the signifier of good film taste or if you need to be more interested in people and start checking cute guys for wedding rings.
Skip If: You can trust people who don’t like Christmas music, if you think that crossing your legs will not stop you from going into labor or if your mother raised you right and would want you to take the one bed in the hotel room.
Final Rating: ★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆
