#Lincoln was the last American brand to downsize - waiting a full three years after Cadillac and a year after Chrysler shrank it’s largest offerings. The rest of the Ford family of fine cars had been shrunk in late 1978 for the 1979 model year, but Lincoln’s new big cars, on the same #Pantherplatform as the downsized Ford LTD & Mercury Marquis but a hair larger, didn’t come online until October of 1979. - At first there were three variants - the #Continental Sedan and Coupe, renamed #TownCar and Town Coupe for 1981, and the Mark VI coupe and sedan, which continued the themes of the MK V in a smaller package. The variations didn’t last past 1983; nor did engine choices - after 1982 all Town Cars were powered by the Ford 302 V8, an engine that had earlier been the staple of economy cars like the Ford Maverick. - But the regular Town Car sedan sold well - particularly after oil prices fell of a cliff in the mid eighties and gas became cheap again. It became a familiar sight all over North America for the next decade. Aside from a rear-end restyle in 1985 and technical updates, it continued largely unchanged into the fall of 1989. These Town Cars are still common in many places - no surprise considering their durability and numbers - sales grew from 28,000 sedans in 1981 to 120,000 in 1985 and never looked back. - Some places have more survivors than others - In 80s NYC, the trend of high-end livery cabs which had begun in the late 1970s accelerated - radio-and-phone cars at first used all kinds of large cars, but the TC was their favorite. By the end of the decade it was not uncommon to see a line of black TCs outside of every office building in Manhattan, a phenomenon that only recently abated and a testament to the durability of these cars -  My uncle’s ’87 TC only gave up the ghost at 235K. - The 80s #TownCar remained a very popular car right up until the end, being restyled into an “aero look” for 1990.
