The bucket list is a list of the things we would like to do/see/feel/experience before we die. It as a „Top 10 +” or a „Must see/do…” list. Lanzarote is not as popular and famous as Tenerife or Gran Canaria among the Canary Islands but I think it can change if people get to know that there are a lot of interesting things to see/do on this island. That is why I wrote this list and present some photos.
I spend the second winter half on this island but I am not such a tourist who spends here 1-2 weeks rather I am a tourist who lives here for 4 -5 months. So I have the time to discover and evaluate what is worth the visit.
I am not a local who is used to everything here, I see with fresh eyes.
And since I give information to my tourists about the sights I had to read a lot/I asked a lot/I searched a lot of information about Lanzarote.
Last reason why my list can be helpful is I am a keen discoverer, I don’t sit at home cooking (sometimes I do, ok see: Sicilian cooking class), but I rather go everywhere myself because I don’t believe others’ fairy tales: I want to see, I want to have proof, I want to experience and I want to live an active life.
So here is my BUCKET LIST for Lanzarote:
The most important sight is the Timanfaya Natural Park, it is really a must see: Hundreds of volcanic craters, El Diabolo Restaurant, Fire Mountains => You can read about it in a previous post: It is like a walk on the Moon in Lanzarote
My favourite sight is the Jardin de Cactus (Cactus Garden). It is also designed by Cesar Manrique (who else? :)). I spent there an hour taking pictures of the flowers, magnificent, more than 1,100 different species of cacti from countries like Mexico, Kenya, Tanzania, Morocco or Peru. => Visiting the Jardin de Cactus (Cactus Garden) in Lanzarote
The Papagayo Beach is really great, it is in the southern part of the island. You can walk there from Playa Blanca (huhh 8 kilometers) or you can go there by car. It is a protected area, there is an entrance fee 3 EUR (2017). The parking is near the beach, there is a restaurant and many other beaches in walking distance. => 10 photos to convince you to go to the Papagayo Beach #gallery-0-66 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-66 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-66 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-66 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
The Mirador del Rio is lookout point in the North, from above you have a beautiful view over the Island of La Graciosa. => White Sandy beaches on La Graciosa Island #gallery-0-67 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-67 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-67 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-67 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
La Graciosa is another island north of Lanzarote, easily reachable by ferry from Orzola, it takes 30-40 minutes to go there. The island is full of white sandy beaches. You can walk there from the harbour, or you can rent a bike or you can go on a Catamaran tour like I did. => White Sandy beaches on La Graciosa Island #gallery-0-68 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-68 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-68 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-68 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Some additional Information to La Graciosa I didn’t write in the previous post: There is a beautiful beach, the Playa de las Conchas, where you can go for example by bike, like a dream.
In El Golfo is the Lago Verde , the Green Lake/Lagoon. You can photograph the lake from above from a lookout point or you can go closer by coming from the other side to see the interesting stone formations on the beach. => Lanzarote’s Lago Verde (Green Lake) to discover from both sides
La Geria is not far from the Timanfaya Natural park, it is a wine-growing area. The vine stocks are planted 2 meters deep and protected from the wind by half-moon lava stone walls. The El Grifo is a famous wine produced here.
I am not a fan of caves, but I must say it is really colorfully illuminated and I heard interesting stories during the tour. You can visit the Cueva de los Verdes only with a guide, every 30 minutes there are tours down. What is the joke inside I will not tell you, go there and see. Cesar Manrique’s presence here too… #gallery-0-72 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-72 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-72 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-72 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Cesar Manrique was the most famous artist, he left everywhere his mark. He created the Fire Devil at the Timanfaya Park, the crab at Jameos del Agua, the fish at Mirador del Rio, the Jardin de Cactus …etc. There are 2 museums, in Tahiche is the house where he lived (Cesar Manrique Foundation), in Haria is the house where he worked.
Lagomar is the House of Omar Sharif (who doesn’t know him check google under Dr. Zhivago). It was also partly designed by Cesar Manrique, exquisite for sure. Pity that Mr Sharif owned the house only for a few days, then he lost it on cards…
The Capital, Arrecife doesn’t have this ’wow’ effect like the Timanfaya Park but for a half day ok, if you want to see a nice harbour, where you can find good restaurants go there. The Grand Hotel is the highest building on the island, from above you have a nice view.
The promenade in Puerto del Carmen is full of restaurants, bars, shops everything a tourist needs/ doesn’t need you can find here. But not only that. The beach section is really nice and the sunset is magnificent from here…
The sunset in Playa Blanca I would put on this list too…
The Jameos del Agua is a cave where you can find the albino crabs (nowhere else in the World you can find them), a concert hall, a small museum and an artificial lake. One of the masterpieces of Cesar Manrique.
?????????????
Teguise is famous for its market every Sunday. It is a weekly market, full of clothes, bags, decorations, jewels. If you want to see the real Teguise go there when there is no market. Then it is a sleepy little village with white houses, narrow streets and small churches.
The Camel ride station is outside the Timanfaya park, it is fun to ride on these camels. #gallery-0-79 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-79 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-79 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-79 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Playa de Famara is the surfers’ paradise, the water is shallow, it is always windy. There are a lot of surf schools here. In the village mostly surfers rent apartments and they spend the whole day on the beach. There are really good fish restaurants here. I liked the beach itself too just to relax a bit, without surfing.
The Caldera Cuervo is a crater you can visit inside. One of my favourite craters, I did a tour there, from the parking it takes 20 minutes to reach the entrance. The road there and inside too is like being on the Moon, you can find here a Lunar landscape. Outside the park, near La Geria. => It is like a Walk on the Moon in Lanzarote
Caldera Blanca is a bit more tiring, it took for me 2,5 hours to go up and back down. I have never walked on around a crater before. => Walking on the top of the White Crater (Caldera Blanca) in Lanzarote
There is a nice lookout point at the Ermita de las Nieves
Caletón Blanco is on the northeast coast of the island near Órzola, here you can find some tiny beaches of white sand and black rocks. Photogenic area… #gallery-0-84 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-84 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-84 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-84 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
So that is it so far…. I still have 2 weeks left, I will see if I add something more to the list…. :)
Vicky

I have already written about some of the Canary islands. Many of you don’t know where they are, they are located in the Atlantic Ocean about 100 km west of Morocco. It consists of 7 main islands: Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. There are some smaller islands around the archipelago, which you can also visit at a day excursion like La Graciosa & Los Lobos. I used to work in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and I visited the other 3 (La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma) from Tenerife by ship and by plane. I would like to show you my pictures and give information about what to see there. All islands are worth a visit!

Tenerife
#teide #loroparque #dragontrees #roquesdegarcia #masca #puertodelacruz
Tenerife is the largest island, more than 40 % of the population of the Canary islands lives here. This is the most famous island without questions, with the richest history. The most important sight is the TEIDE, the highest mountain in Spain (more than 3700 m). You can go up to this volcano by the Teleferico. I wrote about it here. In the Teide National Park is the Roques de Garcia (Garcia Rocks), the most famous lookout point. I could see only on this island Dragon Trees. In Icod de los Vinos you can find the El Drago Milenario (Thousand-Year-Old Dragon), the oldest Dragon Tree in the Canary Islands. I didn’t think it would be so interesting but the Pyramids of Güimar are worth a visit. TheLoro Parque is the most famous zoo in the archipelago with dolphin and Orca shows. A famous beach in the north is the Playa de las Teresitas with its white sandy beach and palm trees. In the Anaga mountains is the Mercedes Forest, an enchanted forest, which is similar to the ones in La Gomera and La Palma. La Laguna with its colonial colourful houses was the model for some Latin American/Caribbean cities, like Havana. Las Americas, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje are the main touristic centers, it takes about 20 minutes from the airport to get there. Hotels, restaurants, bars, shops, anything you find here. Puerto de la Cruz is the capital, it is in the North of the island. The Carnaval every February takes place here. Don’t miss the Museum of Nature and Man, it has an amazing collection and some mummies.
Masca is a mountain village, it is like stepping back in time, cobbled streets, old houses.
Minden februárban itt kerül megrendezésre a karnevál.

#goats #corallejodunes #ajuybeach #oasispark
It is the second largest island, the most important sights are the fine sandy beaches in Jandia & Costa Calma. This area in the South is the touristic center number one, so most of the hotels can be found here. It is an hour drive from the airport. The volcanic landscape – like in Cofete – is interesting, but less impressive than in Lanzarote. You can go and discover this wild side of the island during a Jeep Safari. The sand dunes are in Corralejo (similar to Maspalomas in Gran Canaria). For wind surfing and kite surfing you can go to Sotavento beach, and for surfing to La Pared. Ajuy has a black sandy beach and volcanic stone formations. And to get to know the countryside you can go to Betancuria, the former capital, there are nice white houses and a church or you can also visit a small farmhouse to see how they used to live here. Don’t forget to go to the Oasis Park if you want to see a sealion show and lots of other animals.
A homokdűnék Corralejo-nál találhatóak (hasonlóak a Gran Canaria-i Maspalomashoz).

#maspalomasdunes #laspalmas #palmitospark #roquenublo
It is the 3rd largest of the archipelago I spent a winter there many years ago and I found this island a bit boring but of course there area a lot of things to see: Playa de Ingles is the main touristic center, there are hotels, supermarkets, restaurants and bars. It takes an hour to get here from the airport. Las Palmas is the capital, thereis a harbour and many colonial style houses among others the Casa de Colon. It is also known for its carnaval. It is a pity I missed it because I didn’t have a car to go there from Playa de Inglés. Puerto de Mogán is not so far from the Playa de Inglés and this coastal village with its harbour and flowers and white houses is a really idillic spot. I wrote about the Palmitos Park in a previous post here, you can visit it every day to see a butterfly house, a huge cactus garden and a dolphin show. The Dunes of Maspalomas are at the Playa de Inglés, you can sunbathe among them even without clothes. Gran Canaria is a mountainous island, a symbol of it is the Roque Nublo. It is interesting to visit a cave house in the mountains. The main street of Teror is full of beautifully decorated, colourful colonial houses.
Rendkívül híres a karneválja.

This is my favourite island, I spent here 1 winter season and I would go back anytime. It is the northernmost and fourth largest island. The most important sight is the Timanfaya Natural Park with its hundreds of volcanic craters. The main touristic areas are Puerto del Carmen (20 minutes from the airport) and in the South Playa Blanca (1 hour from the airport) Cesar Manrique was an artist, his works can be found everywhere: The Mirador del Rio (lookout-point in the north), Cueva de los Verdes (illuminated volcanic cave), Jardin de Cactus (cactus garden – by the way my favourite place), Jameos del Agua (in this cave many concerts are organized). He even has a museum. Have you seen a green lake? No? Then go to the Lago verde. The Papagayo Beach is the most famous one, it is in the south of the island. To hop on another island I would suggest the La Graciosa . Due to the volcanic soil there are a lot of wine-growing areas, the most famous one is La Geria with its half-moon lava stone walls. I suggest you to go to Teguise and visit the market on Sunday. If you are bored here – which is impossible in my opinion – you can hop on Fuerteventura.
#timanfaya #lageria #papagayobeach #cesarmanrique
A Papagayo strand a leghíresebb, a sziget déli részén fekszik.

#laislabonita #rutadelosvolcanoes #lostilosforest
The island is called La Isla Bonita, because it is so beautiful. It is the fifth biggest in the archipelago. I flew there from Tenerife for 1 day, I rented a car and discovered the island this way. The capital is Santa Cruz, it is really lovely with its main street and the colourful houses. The beaches are mostly black due to the volcanic origin. A lot of volcanic craters, walking tails you can find in the Caldera de Taburiente National park: the Ruta de los Volcanoes is the most famous, there is a 15m deep volcanic crater and the Roque de los Muchahos is the highest point of the island. You can find here an enchanted forest just like in La Gomera and Tenerife, the Los Tilos forest with lots of trekkig tails. Honestly maybe because of the rainy weather, I didn’t find this island that bonita. It is very different from the others (Gran Canaria, Fuerte, Lanzarote, Tenerife) with its green forests and scenery, it is similar to La Gomera but much bigger.

A szigetet La Isla Bonita-nak (Szép sziget) hívják, mert olyan szép. A szigetcsoport ötödik legnagyobbja. A vulkanikus eredetű strandok többnyire feketék.

#Garajonayforest #viewpoints #sansebastian
I went to La Gomera from Tenerife by ferry during an excursion. About the beaches and all the sights to see I can’t give you information, but I can tell you the MUST SEE sights are: the Garajonay National Park to admire the enchanted forest, the Mirador de Abrante (viewpoint) with its crazy restaurant with a glass floor 600 meters above sea level, los Roques Viewpoint with its rock formation and a view over the green hills and San Sebastian, the harbour, with its colourful houses. I would put the Los Organos, basalt columns at a cliff, to the Must see list, but unfortunately I coudn’t see it. The La Gomerans have a special whistling language, the Silbo Gomero.

#miradordelapena #candelaria #quesadilla
It is the smallest of all the 7 islands, lesser known, which means less tourists but it is not boring at all and you can take there amazing photos of the landscape. From Tenerife you can go there by ferry and it is easier to go on an excursion then doing it on your own. The Mirador de la Pena (lookout point) is the work of Cesar Manrique, the architect of Lanzarote. You can see Juniper trees everywhere, they are symbols of the island. The scenery is similar to La Palma and La Gomera, green with lots of forests. The Church of Candelaria is the largest church on the island. This island must be a paradise for hikers, there are a lot of hiking trails and volcanic rock formations. The quesadilla is a typical cheescake from El Hierro. It is a pity we didn’t see the Charco Azul, a natural swimming pool.
#miradordelapena #candelaria #quesadilla
A kirándulásról amin én vettem részt itt olvashatok. Mindenhol találhatóak Boróka fenyők, amik a sziget szimbólumai. A táj hasonló La Palma-hoz és La Gomera-hoz, zöld, sok erdővel. Candelaria templom a sziget legnagyobb temploma.
