Crimson Reckoning Postmortem & GG!
And just like that, the semester is over, and the final version of Crimson Reckoning is complete.
Our team, PaperFrame Studios, combined four distinct skill sets to create a dark fantasy platformer influenced by Soulslike games. We spent the last few weeks designing wave-based combat, creating enemy AI, balancing player mobility, implementing perks, and even adding a full boss battle. It's been tough, challenging, and incredibly rewarding.
Throughout the project, my primary responsibilities were mechanics and narrative integration. I helped develop player mobility, collaborated closely with George on combat systems, and contributed to worldbuilding and narrative, all of which helped form the game's dismal tone. I also assisted in playtesting sessions and helped apply suggestions to improve clarity and tempo.
Looking back, our greatest success was our ability to respond to playtester input. Each session showed difficulties we hadn't considered: unfair adversary spawning, ambiguous UI, and small attack windows. We didn't see this feedback as criticism; instead, we regarded it as motivation to iterate. As Fullerton explains in Game Design Workshop, building games is constantly chasing delight through iterative playtesting and improvement cycles. During that process, our game genuinely evolved.
One of the final important changes was to improve the boss fight with Dwayne the Golem. Originally, it lacked visual feedback and attack cues, but after some tweaking, it now feels like a fitting challenge with weight, pattern recognition, and potential for player creativity. We also improved the perk system, provided audio cues, and ensured that dying didn't seem like a failure, it was simply part of the process.
If we had more time, we'd look at a comprehensive progression system, several venues, and advanced combat systems such as parrying or special attacks. Still, I'm proud of what we managed to create in such a short period of time: a responsive, evocative, and challenging prototype. It taught me not just how to create a game, but also how to operate as part of a team with changing objectives.
Overall, I've learnt that game development requires iteration, communication, and clarity. The best ideas do not necessarily come from a single individual; rather, they develop when everyone participates, tests, and adapts. I've also discovered that even with simple tools like GDevelop, you can express a great deal of creativity if your systems are focused and well-defined.
This is GG for Crimson Reckoning, but I'd like to continue working on it after the course maybe even turn it into a complete release eventually. For the time being, however, we have made it through the waves, defeated the golem, and crossed the finish line!

Iteration & Refinement in Crimson Reckoning
Following multiple playtesting iterations, this week was all about refinement and iteration. Our team at PaperFrame Studios worked to enhance the flow, readability, and feel of our dark fantasy platformer, Crimson Reckoning, based on user input. We made adjustments that affected clarity and playability, reaffirming that iteration is about improving the user experience rather than merely resolving issues.
Refining adversary pace was the biggest improvement. In previous iterations, the player would be overpowered by enemies that appeared all at once. We made the adjustment to a staggered spawn system so that players have time to prepare. Feedback stating that the game seemed unduly harsh rather than challenging directly influenced this adjustment. Combat now feels stressful yet doable, which is precisely the kind of experience we want in a structure similar to Souls.
Mobility was another topic we covered. In order to improve vertical movement, we rebalanced the air dash and added fall-through platforms after our testers complained that the platforms felt constricting. A glitch that allowed the player to dash into projectiles without understanding why they were hit has been repaired, and the dash function now has more distinct aural and visual indications.
Another key concern was combat clarity. Early playtests showed that it was difficult to read enemy hit reactions and that the attack range was too short. To increase the impact of each strike, we added a minor knockback effect, made hit flash animations, and significantly increased the melee range. The combat felt more satisfying and snappier because to these delicate polish layers.
On the basis of recommendations, we additionally enhanced UI components. Players now receive better feedback on their choices thanks to the perk system implemented following Wave 3. To make the selection feel like a genuine moment of pleasure, we included acoustic cues, icon modifications, and hover text. To make the system more interesting, we're even testing animated perk cards.
The concepts discussed in Chapter 5 of Game Design Workshop (Fullerton) are reflected in all of these improvements, particularly the significance of playcentric design and quick feedback loops. By iterating with actual players, we were able to find emotional issues as well as technical ones, areas where the game didn't feel clear, enjoyable, or equitable.
We are concentrating on fixing the remaining problems as we approach the last week: the camera needs to be smoothed out more, the boss behaviour is being improved, and some enemies still become stuck. Crimson Reckoning is in a much stronger position overall, though, and it's amazing to see how far it's come.

The intense fics I was reading are crime/action heavy like Taken and governor grant. What I'm looking for in lighthearted is more romance, something where Olitz spend time together and are in love without huge stakes or something that will make me too sad.
That makes total sense. I haven’t read those stories for the same reasons. It’s not my genre. I don’t like sci-fi, thriller, or mystery-based Olitz stories. I also don’t read a lot of canon-based Olitz, but two of the authors below have stories that do a really good job.
I don’t know AO3 so can’t be helpful there. Some of these authors also put their stuff on there, so if you prefer that interface, you can check the names below.
I’m reading a small list of authors right now (including oldies I’m revisiting) because I’m extremely picky. I read Olitz authors who know how to add tension, but also make me feel safe with how they handle Olitz. Also, I’m an adult and I want to read adult shit. So, I stay in the M-rated content, sometimes T-rated also.
