Paper wasp :]

So we had some paper wasps setting up under our back porch glass table.

Did some research into their type and saw that I could move the nests without hurting them. No worries, I'll just knock their nests down and they'll know they should find a better spot. Two of three aren't there anymore, however it seems this one was determined to stay.

Maybe I hadn't gotten to the task on time and their nest was too large for it to abandon. I did spot some larvae in there, maybe it didn't want to give up, but it also never took flight the whole time I was there and thought it might've been injured. So I decided to try giving it a new home.

Paper wasps, if your research ignores fearful biases, are peaceful vespids (stinging insects) who only wish to defend their nests. They're native here in Australia, and are drawn to wood because they chew it up and turn it into nests (so strong, so cool). This can cause problems if they perceive you as a threat just because you were walking around or using the furniture they set up on.

All these pictures are taken with my Papershoot 16mp with the Macro lens. None of these shots are zoomed in, I trusted that the wasp wouldn't hurt me with my hands and camera mere centimetres away from it and its nest.

So after finding a small, tong-like tool to safely pick up the nest with, and some rubber gloves, I put it in an old woodshop pencil holder from 7th grade that I didn't use anymore. And just look at this beauty. Love that I caught some of the finer nest detailing too.

After gently sliding the nest a little further in, I put it under a bush in a corner of my backyard. Hopefully the wasp lasts through the rain and strong winds we've been having recently.

No filter domestic photography, since that's your specialty

Because all camera settings are automatic, there's not much you can do if you're in a lowlight environment unless this is the specific mood you're going for.

I've taken so many bad pictures at concerts with this camera, it's a challenge getting a good pic at the right time without the automatic settings getting in the way. It's a gamble, but I've definitely taken some amazing photos that can easily be enhanced with lighting changes and colour correction. (also shout out to Meteor Mirai)

So yeah that's my experience. Papershoot has a specific vibe to it with their mission statement to be an alternative to disposable cameras that will end up in landfill. It's quirky, lightweight, and has lenses and function cards, but definitely doesn't replace a DSLR. One problem I do have with the 16mp is that it doesn't save date and time images were taken. The 18mp does though so I'm looking to upgrade.

have you heard about papershoot cameras? they're a digital film-esque camera company. i have one and i think it's a great alternative especially with the prices of film being so fuckin' expensive

I just looked it up and while I really like the idea behind it, the results definitely look digital to me. Maybe I’m not looking in the right place and if you wouldn’t mind showing me your photos I’d love to see them! I’m not completely opposed to digital (I still hang on to my old Galaxy because I love the look of old crummy digital in particular), but, corny as it is, I love that my film photos are something tangible that I can physically hold. I’m willing to pay a bit extra to have that.
