Fanon is the bane of my existence. Genuinely, sometimes I see what the overarching opinion or take is of specific character, and I am baffled with how they got there. I still (for example) to this day, and I've tried to understand it and find the basis behind it, am confused at how people look at Kafka from HSR and go 'she's a dominatrix, overtly sexual, is often covered in blood (and likes being that way), and treats Blade like a lap dog'. She wears uniquely conservative clothing (yes, high waist shorts were originally considered conservative when they first became popular), more so than I think most other HYV female characters, she doesn't actually flirt in any way (especially not in a way that makes you think that she's hungry for some sort of bedroom action every moment of the day), she actively smooths out creases on her shirt after a fight and then also complains when there's even one stain on her clothes, and she actively speaks to Blade (and treats him) as a peer, even endangering herself to ensure that he's okay (in her SQ). I literally do not understand where the fanon take comes from, except it being something pulled out from somewhere the sun doesn't shine.

But the annoying thing about it then is that I feel like (god, this sounds like I'm putting myself on a pedestal and it's not what I intend to do whatsoever) I need to validate my approach to her character so much more, because it counters the overwhelming — or I feel like it's bordering the entirety of the fandom, really — while I'm literally just dissecting her scenes, voice-lines and character stories as I go. And yet, I'm the one who people go 'oh, it's such a unique take on Kafka!' and I mean, I know that it's intended as a compliment, but it often makes me feel like I'm just pulling stuff out of my back pocket for funsies, and that I'm somehow the canon-divergent one. And while there's nothing wrong with choosing a canon-divergent approach to presenting your portrayal— there's nothing more demotivating or frustrating about people almost treating a portrayal as if it were divergent when you're actively trying excessively hard to be canon-strict and unravel canon with the intent of respecting it in every way possible.

It's the same with Yelan, who suffers this similar sexual 'mommy' treatment, but is just an excessively less popular character than Kafka, but the entire thing just makes me excessively— ugh. Honestly, fanon takes will send me to an early grave. They have zero substance to them more often than not, but they become the overwhelming perceptions of a character, and more often than not, and this will be a separate salt topic: do massive injustices to female characters by those who preach 'respect for women' the very most, and objectifies most male characters as insistently as I crave chocolate in the day. /stomps floor in typical angry Tinkerbell fashion.

@papilio-anima / it seemed like she made it just in time after all. she found herself anxious with concern of being unable to greet a rather familiar face once the aquabus arrived to its destination. furina was most pleased to find that she had nothing to concern herself about in the end. as a lady must, furina greeted those who felt inclined to greet her & paid no semblance of attention to those who whispered the usual hearsay about her at the mere sight of her presence.

as unnerving as it was, but she needn't stress herself out about that, not when she had a guest she was expecting. as if on cue the aquabus drew closer & closer much to her joy.

furina drew nearer to the edge & smiled at the familiar sight of someone she had been most fortunate enough to meet only some months ago. ' miss hu tao! ' furina greeted her from where she stood.

she cleared her throat. ' please allow me to welcome you to fontaine! ' she felt an overwhelming sense of excitement more than nerves, she's realized, emotions brimmed at their edges, all positive ones. ' i'm so happy that you accepted my invitation. Kaveh's heart was beating a frantic pace against his heart, but he couldn't help but be calmed by a familiar face. Hand placed over his chest, he nodded ever so slightly. It's just you, was the unspoken air between them.

"It was....I don't know how to describe it. Floaty - shapeless. I've never seen anything like it before. It had to be a ghost! It growled at me!" who is more likely to hurt the other? Gaming maybe only because he knows he's quick to get defensive and riled up sometimes with arguments and it could potentially hurt feelings

who is emotionally stronger? They're both pretty equal there since they've both had their fair share of trying events in their life and like miss people that are gone

who is physically stronger? Probably Gaming for physical activity/games but if they're talking for something like walking for travel I'm sure they'd keep up with each other just fine

who is more likely to break a bone?  Gaming hands down if he was doing pole training for Wushou and fell. Wouldn't be the first time he's broken a bone

who knows best what to say to upset the other?  Not that I think she'd do it intentionally, but saying something to hit a sore spot about things Gaming and his dad have argued about in the past would be an easy way to upset him

who is most likely to apologise first after an argument?  Probably Gaming only because he learned from the years of discourse with his father that keeping this bottled up and not apologizing does more harm than good.

who treats who’s wounds more often?  Hu Tao would probably have to take care of Gaming's more since he does a lot of physical training for his Wushou dancing, he's probably a bit more likely to come home with an injury

who is in constant need of comfort?  I'd say neither tbh. Need it sometimes sure but certainly not constant need of comfort

who gets more jealous?  Neither really, that's just not how either of them are and there's no chance of doing anything around the other that would encourage a legitimately jealous behavior.

who’s most likely to walk out on the other?  Neither, I just can't see that being a reaction either of them resort to for anything

who will propose?  Gaming's aunts and grandmother would be dishonor on you and your cow mad if Gaming wasn't the one to propose and do it first xD

who has the most difficult parents? Gaming by default since Hu Tao's aren't around

who initiates hand-holding when they’re out in public?  Both, simple PDA like that isn't something they're afraid of so it's easy for them both to initiate

who comes up for the other all the time?  Tbh I don't know what this really means by 'come up for the other' so I have no idea lol

who hogs the blankets?  I feel like that could easily be tug of war between them while they're both asleep.

who gets more sad?  Gaming probably because he's a bit more volatile with his emotions than Hu Tao is (even his dad has commented on how quick to rile he can be)

who is better at cheering the other up?  Probably Hu because she could use scaring him as a way to distract Gaming and then follow up with cuddles

who’s the one that playfully slaps the other all the time after they make silly jokes? Hu Tao because Gaming would not slap her for a silly joke, he'd much sooner elbow her.

who is more streetwise? I feel like both are since Gaming moved out of the house younger than he maybe would have if his teen years had gone differently, and Hu Tao since she's had to travel around at different times and work with different people than Gaming would for his delivery and guard jobs.

who is more wise? I'd say Hu Tao since she's probably done a lot more reading than Gaming and is just more learned about a lot of things

who’s the shyest? Probably Gaming for certain things but it would purely be due to inexperience but it wouldn't last long.

who boasts about the other more?  If we're talking about to other people I think that could easily go both ways. Hu Tao just wrote some cool poetry she's excited to read somewhere? He's gonna mention where she's doing the reading and hype it up to his coworkers. Gaming actually snagged a job doing a dance performance for something? You bet she'd tell people when and where so they can go watch. They're absolutely each others hypeman.

who sits on who’s lap? Hu Tao sits on Gaming's lap, he's not big but he'd be afraid of being too heavy and squishing her if he sat on her for too long.

Zhongli - I don't personally is it as parental but Zhongli probably sees her as an employer, associate and a friend in the same way he sees Venti as a friend (albeit she hasn't seen half of the violence that he throws at Venti and won't because he doesn't want to hurt her like he is willing to hurt Venti)

Xiao - I know they know each other in canon so it could be fun to explore they're dynamic seeing as she is clearly capable of pushing him to do some things which if you go off what Xianyun says about Xiao getting him to socialize it is easier said than done. And just like prankster vs super serious stoic.

Childe - like this is just going off your ask earlier pointing out just how much business she does with the Fatui. Childe is probably the friendlier option.

Arlecchino - same reasoning as Childe but Arle would probably be less genuinely friendly which could be interesting to see how the two would navigate what is probably going to be a much less personal relationship than it could be with Childe.

5. Is your muse comfortable with public displays of affection?

It's not as much about comfort as it is about being a woman of her culture. Liyue seems to have pretty strong roots set in olden China in terms of inspiration, so I draw a lot of answers from that (without drawing a direct 1 to 1 correlation between the two) when it seems to match what I see on screen. So, in essence, China was influenced by a specific belief system called Confucianism, which touches on 'ethics' and morality when it comes to social behavior. It heavily motivated a firmly rooted respect for social norms across the board, so think of propriety/modesty, and the decorum (reputation/dignity) that would come as a result of both of those things. Liyue on the surface seems to play quite heavily into these things (not all characters as equally much, of course), and Yelan, though possibly not seeming so unless you look a little past the 'aesthetic' surface, fits into this quite well. Within this whole social belief system, public displays of affection were at the very least not common, and at worst, looked down upon, and I play into this for Yelan, as her behavior seems to fit into this quite consistently. Now, she is not opposed to it, and I'll take my Fontaine 'verse' as an example here (even if I see it as a logical potential continuation of 'canon' instead of a 'divergent, forced' verse). Yelan is canonically confirmed to have traveled around a fair bit, which means she's exposed herself to a wider array of cultures. She's seen these in practice, and she's fully aware that they all function differently and she's great at adapting to things, but it simply would take a while for Yelan, not 'Yelan' as is tied to different personas, to become used to this. Fontaine seems to have different forms of greeting, a potential more friendly 'cheek kiss' would take her by surprise initially, but it would become something she gets used to. Public displays of affection would be similar, even if they'd only be smaller things, such as hand holding, or walking a little closer to the other than usual (and usually only in Fontaine, where this might be more 'common').

For practical purposes in the morning? Yes. To draw their eye if she craves a specific kind of attention from them? Yes. All of this behind closed doors, of course. This woman will not go outside wearing the shirt of another, unless she absolutely has to for one reason or another. Outside of that, more 'common' things like wearing the coat of her partner if she's cold and they aren't? Yes, absolutely— 'chivalry' is something that will definitely impress, outside of also appreciating this for practical reasons.
