Postcards from Snagglepuss
And you're asking how the Easter parade in Gatlinburg went
INSIDE CATTANOOGA KLATSCHE, GATLINBURG, TN: To answer such a question as many of you were probably asking ... With partly cloudy skies for the most part, the day turning out rather beautiful, many of the trees in the Smoky Mountains starting to go into bloom for the most part, and a few of the black bears starting to come forth from hibernation.
It may not have been the Pasadena Doo-Dah Parade, or even those on the likes of New York's Fifth Avenue or the Atlantic City Boardwalk (especially in earlier, more glamourous times), but the choice of route (as in the section of the Parkway between the split of US 411 and 441 and the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park--more or less Beautiful Downtown Gatlinburg, to paraphrase Gary Owens from back on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In back in the day) pretty much attracted considerable curiosity from the Easter weekend crowd in the Queen Mother of Tourist Traps.
In keeping with Easter Parade tradition, it was more or less walkabout all along the Parkway, waving to the somewhat confused crowd wondering what the whole was about to begin with (though you had plenty of meet-and-greet and selfie opportunities among the characters). Naturally, the Cattanooga Cats "themselves" led the parade, real informal like, no welcoming banner ... but even then, Kitty Jo couldn't resist the selfie opportunities. Or even Scoots, for that matter; it seems Scoots, considering his modest stature, must have something of a liking, even if his storytelling wasn't fascinating enow.
And you could imagine the reaction of the crowd to the presence of yours truly, Huckleberry Hound and Crazy Claws strolling the Parkway ... or even Augie Doggie on the shoulders of his doting Doggie Daddy ... Top Cat and clowder, with Choo-Choo and Fancy-Fancy getting their share of fan attraction ... Peter Potamus and his diving enterouge, with plenty of the crowd rather surprised that Peter was an amazing diver in his own right ... Penelope Pitstop, kissing plenty of spectators ... those Banana Splits, quite the cutups (even Drooper going into the "Super Drooper" routine near the Gatlinburg Space Needle, to the bemusement of fans) ... Scooby-Doo and crew ... perennial crowd favourites, the Hair Bear Bunch ... Lori, Gator, Braveheart and Inch High, Private Eye ... Hong Kong Phooey, with a silly little tweaking of tai ch'i ... Captain Caveman and his cousins, the Slag Brothers, "going ape" and liking it ... you couldn't help but resist the Skatebirds going the inline-skating act ... even Kwicky Koala taking things a bit on the Aussie side by throwing Cherry Ripe and Freddo Frog bars to the crowd, as well as packets of Throaties (a popular Australian brand of throat drops), not to mention The Bungle Brothers doing Abbott and Costello justice with their "Who's on First?" routine with George in Bud Abbott's role and Joey doing Lou Costello's.
(Seems that for some reason, some in the crowd were rather surprised to discover what said Cherry Ripe bars were like, basically mashed cherries, dessicated coconut and dark chocolate. And for a lucky few, Kwicky "himself" passed out boxes of classic Australian snack crackers Jatz and Vita-Weat.)
After the parade ended, or some resemblance thereof, Kwicky Koala got out a box of another iconic Australian staple--Sanitarium Weet-Bix cereal, not quite Shredded Wheat but rather interesting by itself. Even if they turned out a little like glue in the end.
And the Cattanooga Cats dishing up typically Southern smoked ham for dinner, along with cheesy hash browns, green bean hot dish--and Kitty Jo's storied chess pie for dessert. Washed down with lemonade blended with hibiscus flower extract--what could get more interesting, to begin with?
And you can imagine how the crowd felt at the sight of the parade, otherwise not promoted well beforehand.

Part One - Pixel and Owner's Birthday
Granddog Pixel and her owner came to visit us during Pixel's owner's birthday week!  It was great to have someone in the house besides just two empty-nesters.
On Saturday, August 20, we got another National Park visit out of the way for Pixel!  The Great Smoky National Park - the most visited national park.
We decided just to make a long day trip of it. We left Chatt early in the morning, got through Knoxville, and then to the 441 parkway to Gatlinburg. We noticed a lot of Shoney's along the way. We found parking at a PTA school - Pi Beta Phi Elementary School and took a short walk to the Village Shoppes.
This is where you find Donut Friar!
Tumblr media
We walked around Gatlinburg after visiting a few shops in Village Shoppes. Got some cute pictures of Pixel. We picked up delicious fudge at Kilwin's Chocolates and Fudge, and tasted some wine at Little Bear Winery.
Back on the road, we headed into the Great Smoky National Park driving through Newfound Gap Road to the top and back down.
Tumblr media
We pulled over at the main pull-over along the road at the top. We even got a picture of Pixel on the ledge.
Tumblr media
We found a break to stretch out and look around at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center. Pixel sniffed around too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Instead of taking the traditional highway route, we took the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway back to I-40. Tunnel after Tunnel on this edge of the wilderness park road. The sights were just astounding!
We stopped in Newport for a bite to eat and then drove all the way back to Chatt. It was definitely a fun day with a lot of pictures!
On Sunday the 21st, we took a nice long break!

Postcards from Snagglepuss
And a pretty quick run into Gatlinburg, come to think of it
SOMEWHERE ALONG THE PARKWAY (US 441) BETWEEN PIGEON FORGE AND GATLINBURG, TN: Between Cincinnati and Gatlinburg via I-75 (to Knoxville) and US 441 is about 230 miles, particularly allowing for the narrow north/south axis of Kentucky and Tennessee ... meaning about five hours' or so drive from the Queen City to the Queen Mother of Tourist Traps.
And with such eclectic company on top of other fellow Funtastics making their way unto the Great Smoky Mountains for what cometh Easter Sunday--no less than The Cattanooga Cats' Gatlinburg Easter Parade on The Parkway, the main tourist district of Gatlinburg, as anyone who has visited Gatlinburg heading into Great Smoky Mountains National Park will tell you.
Yet you wonder what makes Great Smoky Mountains such a popular national park to begin with, especially when you have a gateway like Gatlinburg and its kitschiness inherent in contrast to the unspoilt serenity expected of national parks, to begin with.
=============
So anyway, our company--yours truly, Huckleberry Hound, Crazy Claws, The King, Sheena and Ruff and Reddy--are at a gas station/convenience store on The Parkway within eyeshot of Dollywood. It seems Country, with the Cattanooga Cats, wanted us to meet the feline quartet there and get some directions to be led to as much accomodations as Cattanooga Klatsche, their Gatlinburg coffee shop and artisan roastery. Refuelling was more or less a subsidiary activity.
Considering the early traffic for the Easter weekend heading into Gatlinburg being what it was, it somehow required Kitty Jo, who was driving a modest little commuter car, to use back roads to reach our rendezvous.
"Uh, hello boys!" was how Kitty Jo, otherwise the female vocal and dance lead for the band, introduced us with that somewhat chirpy Southern accent of hers. Not to mention Teeny Tim by her side, and leashed, obviously. And pretty much everybody left the motorhome to extend greetings.
"At any rate, on behalf of the Cattanooga Cats as well as Cattanooga Klatsche ... may I just extend to you 'welcome' here to the Smoky Mountains--"
"Obviously," adding my own touch of levity to the proceedings, "not to be confused with Little Smokies sausages!" (Which got chuckles galore, guaranteed.)
"At any rate," Kitty Jo continued, "a little later in the evening, back at the Klatsche, we're gonna set up a buffet and discuss some of the plans for the parade weekend, which is also the Easter weekend."
Which had Reddy wondering "what exactly will the tourists otherwise be thinking, seeing us characters more or less along the Parkway?"
"We'll naturally cross that proverbial bridge at that time" was how Kitty Jo explained it. "As a precaution against rain," she added, considering that likelihood, "should rain ensue on Easter Sunday, we'll issue rain ponchos to participants."
"I just hope she knows what she's talking about," Huck remarked.
"And while there may not be a marching band as part of the Easter Parade," Kitty Jo quipped, "I certainly hope our characters' presence will make this Easter especially interesting! Especially with the meet-and-greet angle more than anything!"
After a few minutes more, Kitty Jo was able to lead our motorhome to a private parking area such as the Cats themselves have outside Cattanooga Klatsche in a modest alley just off the Parkway, and close to where the tourist trolley shuttles meet, even! And upstairs to a modest little apartment the quartet keeps above Cattanooga Klatsche, Crazy Claws, Huck and yours truly were directed to a modest little guest bedroom--if it could be called as much, and our presence stunning the band's drummer, resident wit and jock, Groove, who set up the sleeper sofa such as would serve as our sleeping quarters.
"Oh--and don't forget your bags," Kitty Jo chimed in as she and Country, the band lead and romantic interest of Kitty Jo, brought our modest luggage in and got things ready. (The others who came along with us found motel accomodations along the Parkway.)
So how do you think things will turn out?

Prayers and Perplexity
Our day started with a plan to meet for the hotel breakfast at 8:00 am. We were all packed back in the car and headed towards Gatlinburg by 9:30. As it was Sunday the travel ritual of finding a mass began amd we searched on route for one that would time appropriately with out travel. Georgetown Kentucky proved to be a match and so we put the instructions in the GPS and had a little adventure across the side roads to find our weekly salvation. It proved to be memorable as we arrived to a large campus and traveled up a long, winding drive to the Cardome Centre. A huge imposing building at the top of the driveway appeared to be the perfect setting for a horror movie. Poppa remarked that it looked like a place you go in and never come out. The parking lot soon started to fill with cars and people entered the rear door of the main building. We followed and climbed the large wooden staircase to the chapel. It was a beautiful space filled with light. The seating was white chairs. The priest welcomed us, the choir was rehearsing and every seat in the chapel was filled. The full-colour bulletin printed weekly outlined the mass and showed that the parish collected over $17 000 LAST WEEK in Offertory. Mind blown! After mass Poppa again remarked at the ease with which we managed to escape what surely must be a secret Catholic ritualistic retreat.
We continued to drive south from Kentucky and stopped at the Tennessee border at the Visitor’s Centre to collect brochures and pamphlets. We didn’t arrive in Sevierville until 3pm and by then we were famished as the nuts and crackers we had as snacks in the car could only do so much. We stopped at the Tanger Outlets with a plan to get a sub and look around until check-in at 4 pm. The Subway was…interesting…One look at our sandwiches and Syl declared that the maker was definitely NOT a sandwich artist. 🤣
We decided over lunch that we might as well continue to to hotels (plural). It had come to the time that mom had to let dad know that we were staying in two different spots. He was, as one might imagine, perplexed.
Syl, Julien and I made our way to our Smokey Mountain Resort in Gatlinburg. The transition from Pigeon Forge to the Smokey Mountain Parkway’s natural beauty is remarkable. We found our way to Gatlinburg and Julien went in with me to check in declaring “Hot damn!” at everything he saw. Our condo is a lovely two bedroom with a mountain view and a bucolic stream gurgling. It’s just what one might imagine a mountain condo to be…and then you walk outside to the Parkway in Gatlinburg and…WHAM! Are smacked in the face with a commercial garishness that we have described as Wasaga Beach, meets Niagara Falls, meets Vegas. So strange that this is what tourism in the Smokey Mountains is. We feel that we are missing something and are determined to find out exactly what that is while we are here.
Julien is over the moon with the sheer number of mini-putt options and so we are determined to get him to as many as possible. He packed his own putter as any true mini-putt athlete is ought to do.
Tumblr media
Syl and me went for a big walk to check things out. Spied some spots for souvenirs that we will revisit and remarked at the number of candy stores within 500 metres of one another.
We had dinner in Pigeon Forge in a yummy Italian restaurant called Johnny Carino’s and brought enough home to have for lunch the next day. Shopping at Publix for breakfast was the next order of business. We discovered that groceries are not cheap in America either.
An early night back to the resort where Julien and Syl watched a movie. Our travel day had worn us out and we were glad for a comfy bed to rest our weary souls.
