BOTD: Mexican Parrotlet
Tumblr media
Photo: fabrice82
"Tiny, social, and excited-sounding parrot of tropical lowlands endemic to west Mexico. Found in forests, plantations, and semiopen areas with tall trees, including towns and villages. Rarely seen far from fruiting fig trees, in which birds can be very difficult to see, because they are the size and color of fig leaves. Usually seen in flocks of 10–100 birds that move in fast, slightly bounding flight, flashing green and turquoise."

His little chirp!!! I love him. Mametchi has such a sweet personality for a Parrotlet. He doesn’t fit the usual feisty stereotype.

the pacific parrotlet (forpus coelestis), also known as the celestial parrotlet, is a small green parrot originating from a limited range in south america. they are sexually dimorphic, and easy to differentiate; males have bright blue coloration on the wings that is especially visible in flight, while females are overall green. they have grown in popularity as a pet bird, and breeders have developed new color mutations for pet birds including white, turquoise, and marbled. despite being social in the wild, they are typically best kept without cagemates, as they are known to be territorial over their cage and outright aggressive to other birds. despite their small size, they are rarely a good ‘beginner’ pet bird, as they have stubborn personalities and can often be nippy, especially if not heavily socialized from a young age. although they thrive on solitary housing in captivity, they live in flocks of 40-50 birds in the wild. their natural diet is mainly berries and cactus fruits.

September 24, 2024 - Turquoise-winged Parrotlet (Forpus spengeli) Found only in northern Colombia, these small parrots live in forests, savannas, shrublands, and cultivated areas. Foraging in flocks, they probably eat fruit, seeds, and other plant foods, like closely related species, though the specifics of their diet are unknown. Though their breeding behavior has not been studied, they likely nest in cavities or reuse the nests of other birds.

Last night I was thinking that Frederick Chilton needs a pet. Something that's absurd, dumb and annoying, but also cute and funny. Like a parrotlet. His name is Crispy. 🦜
