When Sikkim wasn't the part of India. . . Sikkim was under the rule of the Chogyal Dynasty. In 1890, under the rule of the British, it became a protectorate state. This meant that it came under the jurisdiction of the British. It acted as a buffer state between China and British India. In 1947, according to a treaty Sikkim’s foreign policy, security and communication came under India’s realm. Yet Sikkim retained its independence. Sikkim’s last monarch Palden Thondup Namgyal married an American, Hoppe Cook. It has been said that she took over the governance of Sikkim after her marriage. She was also accused of being a CIA agent. In 1975, the people of Sikkim rebelled against the monarch which led to its official merger with India. Indira Gandhi after becoming PM established RAW, which carried out an important role to annex Sikkim and to liberate Bangladesh. Almost 98% of Sikkimese voted to join India. In 1975, IPS officer Ajit Doval, who is also the present National Security Adviser went from Mizoram to Sikkim and handled the entire operation. Sikkim’s first chief minister Kazi Lhendup Dorjee was supporting India throughout this. Sikkim was made a part of India after the 35th Constitutional Amendment. It was on 16 May 1975 that Sikkim, India’s least populous state officially became a part of India. . . LO1 // RESEARCH & AUDIENCES
The violent legacy of Indian Partition. Partition displaced fifteen million people and killed more than a million.
BACKGROUND: In August 1947, after nearly 200 years, British colonial rule in India came to an end and the country was partitioned into two independent nation states: Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan. The result was the largest forced migration ever recorded, as millions of Muslims journeyed to West and East Pakistan (now known as Bangladesh) while millions of Hindus and Sikhs headed in the opposite direction. The partition of India forced millions of people to leave their homes to move to the other state and thousand died due to an outburst of extreme violence. This was the largest forced migration of people that has ever happened, which wasn’t because of war or famine.

The Murphy Radio - Part I
Tumblr media
Murphy Radio
A window that opened on both sides
The only medium of entertainment at home during my entire childhood was a Murphy radio. Due to bad signals it used to make all sorts of weird, annoying noise just in the middle of an engrossing sitar or jazz concert or at the climax of the weekend play. My father would literally slap and punch the errant radio, calling it all sorts of names out of frustration, like we did with the remote control device of our television set, when it refused to send signals. My mother would dejectedly bemoan her ‘bad luck’ for having such a disobedient and misbehaving radio.

This green eyed instrument at such times would appear to me like a monster, destroying the peace of our otherwise quiet, happy home. Nonetheless, I liked it very much.
Just a fortnight before Dussera , my father would wake us up at 4am.  Our entire small family would cozy up in the bed and listen to ‘Mahalaya’ together in the slightly chilly, early autumn dawn.
youtube
Mahalaya
The green magic eye of the radio would glow mystically in the darkness of the room, rekindling  unexplainable emotions in our hearts. Mother would say it reminded her of her late parents and her sweet childhood days, lost abruptly in the ‘partition’ after independence. She felt a lump in her throat. Her eyes would moisten. My father would say he too remembered his late mother who was very  fond of him and whom he lost at the tender age of fifteen. I would snooze through the mesmerizing ‘abahoni’ (welcoming of Hindu Goddess Durga) chanting by Birendra Krishna Bhadra and songs of Mahalaya, feeling secure with my parents around and happy for the approaching festivity. Mahalaya would set the mood and environment for Durga Puja, - one of the biggest Hindu religious and socio-cultural festivals of India.  From the very next day after Mahalaya, mother would get on to the job of annual deep-cleaning of the house, changing the curtains and upholstery, preparing sweets and snacks for post Dussera, Vijaya Dashami guests and last minute sewing and tucking of new clothes for us.
The ‘Sangbad Parikrama’ read by Deb Dulal Bandyopadhyay and ‘The News’ by Barun Haldar were part of almost every evening in our household. I was so enchanted by the baritone voice of Deb Dulal Bandyopadhaya that when my brother was born I insisted on naming him by the same.
And who would forget this famous signature tune of All India Radio? It was such an integral part of all Indian households possessing a radio.

All India Radio Signature Tune
Now-a-days whenever I listen to it, it makes me feel I am going away, away, and far away from those days of my sweet childhood.  Those days are moving behind in my journey of life, slowly fading away in the distant horizon of memory.
