most important part of the writing process actually is when you loop a single song on max volume and stare at the word document and imagine the characters doing things for 14 hours. this is known as getting in the zone

CHAPTER ONE
Rating: M
Relationship(s): Laxus Dreyar / Gajeel Redfox
Summary: As fancy and fascinating as they might sound at first, dragon slayer mating seasons are really just reproductive cycles, which means that they’re inscrutable, inconvenient, and insufferable. They’re unanimously hated by all the slayers with good reason- but this time around, Gajeel might just come to appreciate his heat.
Word Count: 3,679
Warnings: Mating cycles, sexual tension
A/N: For as much as I love writing developing relationships, which is a lot, it can make me itch for more immediate making out and getting busy. And I tend to struggle to find a premise that strikes the right balance for that, but :3. I finally did :3c.

I spent way too long on this not to inflict my Fairy Tail Racing AU on the world. On my life I'm never drawing a lineup of this many characters again, but goddamn it the B Team dynamic is tragically underutilized and I had to be the change I want to see in the world
It’s a modern with magic au where Laxus is a race car driver and Gajeel's his mechanic (why yes I am biased) and racing also involves mages fighting to get the upper hand so it’s all suitably over-the-top and dangerous. Additional ramblings under the cut 😘
Laxus is a powerhouse of a mage, a world-class driver, and an all around asshole, feeling perpetually stifled by his family's shadow over his career. Makarov finally kicks him out of his racing group (fairy tail) after yet another incident of "intentional recklessness" that endangered the rest of the group this time. He's chastened, but he's also dead-set on taking the chance to prove he can be just as successful without his gramps' resources backing him, which means he has to scrounge up a team for himself.
The unexpected sticking point turns out to be finding a new mechanic. Laxus inherited his car that's famously powerful and specialized and also extremely high maintenance, even by the standards of their batshit magic race cars. Of the few people skilled enough to fix his car, no one's also willing to take on the workload of constant, intensive repairs required after every race Laxus drives. They say he stands a better chance of changing cars than finding a mechanic
—
Gajeel is a down on his luck iron mage after the bad crowd he got involved with years back finally got busted for a lot of borderline illegal shit. He's got a good head for machines and using his magic to shape himself into any tool he needs makes it uniquely intuitive and efficient for him, but the reputation he landed himself with leaves him struggling to find any work. Gajeel's incessantly self-reliant and lowkey too penitent for his own good as he reaches the end of his rope.
First, Juvia tells him her new friends in Fairy Tail say Laxus still needs a mechanic and she urges him to go for it. Then Ivan tries to recruit him to his own group, counting on him to roll with their constant misconduct given his own track record. And then Makarov approaches with a proposal to get enough intel to disband the Raven Tail group and promises a stable job once it's done. Gajeel needs something, but Makarov needs him to work with Ivan, and Ivan demands him to work for Laxus, and Laxus can't get any other mechanics to work for him, so Gajeel's suddenly drowning in work trying to satisfy all three of them.
—
So, Laxus manages to form enough of a team to keep racing. The Raijin Tribe is a given, they're unwaveringly loyal to Laxus and determined to be part of his team. Mira is a very welcome surprise who joined out of a fondness for Freed and an admirably steadfast faith that Laxus can change his ways and succeed. Gajeel's a necessity that Laxus hates at first, surly and standoffish, but his work gets undeniable results. Juvia is reluctantly recruited by Gajeel since she learned first aid by patching him up countless times, and she keeps threatening to quit and apply to Fairy Tail, yet she never goes through with it. Cana clicks with the group so naturally that they're not sure exactly when or why she joined up with them, and they constantly forget she's technically not on payroll.
The team’s dynamic would be smooth sailing if not for Laxus and Gajeel. Laxus doesn't trust him in the beginning, and he resents that he's bad for Laxus's already bad image. Gajeel gives everyone the cold shoulder and automatically assumes they wouldn’t care about him so he doesn’t try to bridge the gaps. They're forced into proximity when Gajeel has to teach Laxus more about the inner workings of the car so he can minimize the wear and tear of his driving, because if he doesn't adjust, there's no hope of him getting by with only one mechanic.
At the start they're both stubbornly combative, but soon enough they're too exhausted to nip at each other and they find they actually work well together, and even get along in the ways that they earn each other’s respect. They rely on each other- Laxus on Gajeel for his safety and for the ability to race at all, and Gajeel on Laxus for his livelihood and his bid for a fresh start- too significantly to not develop a consideration for one another. They're important to each other, whether they like it or not, which they’re going to need as the competitions keep getting more and more out of hand.
—
It goes on to vaguely follow the Raven Tail plotline, and I have a lot more thoughts about the Laxus n Gajeel development and how the others come into play, but I don’t have the energy to organize all of it right now- Maybe at a later point, or if people want to ask. If I were a more powerful artist, I'd design the car too, but I ain't doing that shit
bonus lineart bc i like it

I've been thinking about Laxus's Fairy Law.
How it failed given he truly didn't see any of his guildmates as his enemies. He really thought his plan would help make the guild stronger. Strong so that people like Phantom Lord would never dare to challenge them. He truly believed, through his flawed ideas of strength, that he was doing good for the guild, so of course he coupdn't really see all these people he grew up with as enemies.
Except there's two people this wouldn't apply to.
Ex-Phantoms Gajeel and Juvia
Who were very much enemies of the guild not that long before Fantasia.
Laxus had no connection to them, they're not his friends. So why were they spared? Especially Gajeel, who's directly fighting him at this moment. The guy who destroyed the original guild hall, severely hurt several members, and nearly killed Natsu. In Laxus's mind, Gajeel's the last person who's allowed to be in the guild, allowed to be challenging him. If anything, he should’ve been the one person affected by the spell.
Except.
Gajeel protected Levy. He saved Natsu. Both counts from an attack by Laxus. Juvia helped Team Natsu rescue Erza from the Tower of Heaven, something Laxus may have overheard talk of.
Those two haven't been Fairy Tail members for more than a week, but already they've done more to protect the guild than Laxus 'wouldn't fight Phantom Lord unless Lucy slept with him' Dreyar has.
He's fucking jealous of them. Their actions especially seeded doubt into his mind of his plan, doubt he refused to admit. He may hate them, hate what they used to be, but calling them enemies would be lying to himself. They already proved themselves worthy.
More worthy than him.
#YOU GET IT#this is exactly what ive been saying!!!!!#in so invested in laxus having a strange but acutely jealousy of gajeel#a 1st gen dragon slayer whos been welcomed by from the same guild laxus feels so disconnected from#the way that laxuss villain arc starts gajeels redemption arc- simultaneous and inseparably connected#theyre experiencing the same story laxus is just one beat behind#im obsessed.#anyway#fairy tail#the writing peaked with the fantasia arc its no contest
