Song Review: Chris Smither - “Down in Thibodaux”

Chris Smither remembers his childhood neighbor, Boudreaux - and makes up the rest of the story - on “Down in Thibodaux.”

A patchwork of styles as only Smither threads them, the track announces the May 3 release of All about the Bones. It finds Zak Trojano’s drums tangling with Smither’s mic’d shoes while Chris Cheekus’ sax spirals outward and Smither sings alone and in harmony with BettySoo:

Don’t bring him any money, bring him beer instead/he looks a little strange, that’s not a possum on his head/that’s a chapeaux/down in Thibodaux

“Down in Thibodaux” sounds like no one but Smither. And Smither sounds like no one else. So while the track breaks no new ground, it doesn’t have to - Smither, at 79, remains on his own path.

Introducing: Possum!!!!

(Hopefully I'm doing this right)

Hi, hello! I'm Patchwork Possum, or just Possum for short. I'm writing this as an introduction to me, and my blog.

Names: I like Possum as a name, but feel free to "full name" me or make up your own nicknames.

Pronouns: You can refer to me as He/She/They as you please, I'm not fussed about it either way

Sexuality: Probably Asexual. I can appreciate a pretty face of any gender, but I'm not down to dance myself, you know?

Phobias: Haven't found any yet

Triggers: I'm not easily triggered, just please take the time to think before you post. Don't be an arse.

Anyway, time for fun things! Like fandoms,and interests!

Music Taste: Currently I'm really into Ghost and Sleep Token, but I love listening to other rock and metal bands too! And other genres! I like Hozier, Lord Huron, and the Crane Wives. Feel free to send me music suggestions for any genre!

Fandoms: So many, like, so, so many. Star Wars, Ghost (of course), Call of Duty, Top Gun, Minecraft, FNaF, Pokemon, Hades (the video game), and Mouthwashing, and probably more that I'm forgetting.

Other Interests: Currently big into Gothic cathedrals, but I also love photography, fixed wing aviation, the ocean, the supernatural, food of all kinds (but I especially love sweets and cheeses), murder mysteries, modern history (like, Hellenic Greece onward, though I might know stuff from before that) and graphite and ink artwork. I also like learning about different religions, although I myself don't practice any one in particular.

One more thing!

I am very easily distracted, and very easily stressed out, so I might take a while to get back to ya'll. Please don't take it personally, I'm not doing it on purpose, and ya'll did nothing wrong. It just might take a while for me to clear my inbox sometimes.

I just realized I never told ya'll what a Zyltharian Cub is.

Zyltharian Cub Details:

Appearance: Cubs are born with a tail and soft fur. They act like a mix of kitten, possum, armadillo, and puppy. They are small, round, with large eyes tiny claws, and a long tail. The fur is used for floating in water. Behavior: Empty Heads: They're incredibly naive and easily distracted, with little to no awareness of danger. Their thoughts are simple and focused on immediate needs like food, comfort, and play. Playful & Screamy: They are bundles of chaotic energy, full of clumsy tumbles and high-pitched squeals. They love to explore and climb. Their screams are a mix of joy, frustration, and sudden fear. Single Kitten Syndrome: They can become overly attached and clingy to a caretaker, exhibiting classic signs of "single kitten syndrome" – demanding constant attention, and becoming anxious when left alone. as they age they will lose their fur and tail.

Imagine a creature that is:

Visually Adorable and a Bit Bizarre: Think a small, round ball of fluff with large, captivating eyes. They have tiny claws, a long tail, and soft fur that serves a surprising purpose - helping them float in water. Their overall look is a patchwork of familiar animals: the cuteness of a kitten, the playful clumsiness of a possum, the armor-like build of an armadillo (in miniature), and the boundless energy of a puppy.

Innocently Clueless and Easily Distracted: These cubs are characterized by their extreme naivety. They live entirely in the moment, with simple thoughts revolving around basic needs: food, being comfortable, and playing. Forget any complex thought processes; they're essentially living, breathing distractions, flitting from one shiny object to the next with little or no awareness of danger.

A Tiny Ball of Chaotic Energy: Zyltharian cubs are a whirlwind of activity. They're constantly on the move, tumbling about in a flurry of clumsy exploration. Their vocalizations are a mix of joyous squeals, whiny frustrations, and sudden bursts of fearful cries when they encounter something unexpected (which, given their lack of awareness, is often). Imagine a tiny fluffy tornado of sound and movement.

Emotionally Dependent and Clingy: These cubs are prone to intense attachment to their caregiver. They're like the epitome of "single kitten syndrome," demanding constant attention, affection, and interaction. Being alone is not something they handle well, often resulting in anxiety and distress. They want to be close all the time.

Growing out of their Cutest Phase: It is important to note that they lose both their tail and their fur as they age. That means that this adorable fur ball is a temporary stage.

Here's the essence of a Zyltharian cub:

They are essentially a paradox: incredibly cute and endearing, yet also endlessly frustrating due to their lack of awareness and constant need for attention. Think of them as tiny, adorable bundles of chaotic energy that are completely dependent on their caretaker and hilariously oblivious to everything around them. They are the embodiment of pure, innocent, and somewhat exhausting, joy.

a grunt mimic (forest cryptid that hunts grunts by pretending to be one) that tried to lure an agent into the forest only to be recruited by said agent.

Patchwork

a fused mag created in a magnification accident when a scientist and a rebel fell into a magnification chamber together. currently coming to terms with his existence and sorting through two sets of memories.

Tiger (Ashby “Ash” Hawkins)

she/her

a mag agent who trains new mags. before being magnified, she trained new recruits. very good at bending the rules and is friends with several civilians (and a few dissenters). explorer’s first friend in nevada.

Bandit Trio

one of the original fluffy grunts created by the nexus core. basil and his teammates work together to raid supply convoys and smuggle contraband into nexus city.

Mothra Sharpe

rejected the idea of joining the nexus core with his father. a skilled thief. he and basil are basically siblings.

a former aahw agent who dissented after andy and explorer saved his life. later on he was captured by the same scientists who brought explorer to nevada; they subjected double-o to experiments that turned him into a void creature like explorer.

Explorer

a void creature that originated from rain world. she was brought to nevada by a bunch of scientists led by dr anders; after escaping she eventually became a void creature. now travels all over nevada and is well-known as a cryptid.

Larissa

a romp who joined the explorer squad in search of textbooks and stuff so they could teach their younger siblings.

“Splora Babies”

an agent that was tricked into becoming one of sinclair’s mag experiments. their magnification process was intentionally disrupted to cause mutations.

a failed experiment; created to track, chase down, and kill dissenters. runner was discarded for being “too friendly” and they are currently kept in the basement of the science tower.

a failed experiment; a grunt made of slime that ended up being the wrong consistency. it is basically a sentient puddle of slime.

formerly a scientist named Dr Jasmine who became one of sinclair’s mag experiments. right now fae is basically an oversized bat that can barely fly.

Reality Repair Agency

the reality repair agency (aka the “rra”) is an organization dedicated to maintaining the integrity of nevada’s reality. its members track down and repair rifts in reality as well as fight off anomalies.

The Regulator

an employer whose job is to regulate the effects that the improbability drives have on nevada. regulator established and runs the rra.

The Forest

the forest (created by myself and @wanderer-of-the-wastelands) is a very spooky, mazelike forest that basically turns people into cryptids.

an attempt by the aahw to create an immortal mag that heals using ice. avalanche was released after they ended up being too much of a hassle to care for. now they wander the frozen parts of nevada.

a moth grunt who lives in an underground city. ne goes to the surface to sell homemade lamps and decorations.

stinky. runs a highly illegal lab that uses stolen equipment. he’s responsible for bringing explorer to nevada. even after his lab was busted, he is still at large.

a former atp engineer who dissented after surviving a raid. he lives on his own with his adopted child, tabby. still friends with tiger after all these years.

Kronos

an atp engineer who was captured (by anders?) and, long story short, turned into a rain world lizard and abandoned. i’m still figuring out his story.

a former doctor and sullivan’s partner.

a moth grunt based on pseudodirphia moths. one of cosmo’s family members.
