Bòn Fèt Endepandans epi Bòn Ane! 1804-2022 Happy Haitian Independence Day! 🇭🇹 Joumou or giraumon soup is a traditional Haitian pumpkin soup made with vegetables, plantains, meat, pasta and spices. It is a celebratory dish, deeply rooted in Haitian identity, and its preparation promotes social cohesion and belonging among communities. Originally reserved for slave owners, Haitians took ownership of the soup when they gained independence from France, turning it into a symbol of their newly acquired freedom and an expression of their dignity and resilience. It is made from giraumon, a variety of pumpkin once cultivated by the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean, and is prepared and consumed specifically on the first of January – Haiti’s Independence Day – when it constitutes the first meal of the year. It also serves as traditional Sunday breakfast. The preparation of Joumou soup is a family and community affair: women manage the overall activities, children help to prepare the ingredients, artisans make the aluminium pots and other utensils used to prepare the soup, and farmers work the land to harvest the vegetables. La lettre dans Le Devoir ce matin réunit plus de 350 signataires* interpelant la responsabilité de la Ministre, Nathalie Roy, au sujet du patrimoine des Sulpiciens en péril.

Le message sans équivoque souligne l’urgence d’une intervention du gouvernement. L’emphase est, en outre, placée sur le licenciement du personnel car on ne peut pas prétendre que les collections ne soient pas en danger lorsque l’on licencie ceux qui en ont la charge : Sans personnel qualifié, pas de collections ⎼ les collections étant le produit d’un engagement et d’une curation professionnelle à la fois raisonnée et sensible. La lettre fait aussi valoir l’importance d’une approche globale, qui s’est déjà trop fait attendre, concernant le destin des archives et du patrimoine religieux :

Bien qu’inédite par sa portée, la situation actuelle n’est pas nouvelle ni exclusive. Déjà, en 2005, l’Institut d’histoire de l’Amérique française avait exprimé ses préoccupations devant la Commission de la culture lors de la Consultation générale sur le patrimoine religieux du Québec. À la vitesse où les communautés religieuses québécoises ferment leurs maisons, un plan national d’intervention s’impose. Il devrait reconnaître la valeur patrimoniale des archives religieuses, inclure l’ensemble des acteurs concernés — dont Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec — et prévoir un financement pérenne et suffisant pour assurer leur conservation et leur mise en valeur.

Dans le cas des Sulpiciens, devant les risques concrets de dispersion de la collection, voire de sa destruction, nous vous demandons, Madame la Ministre, de procéder rapidement au classement que vous avez annoncé des archives de la Compagnie des prêtres de Saint-Sulpice. Les livres anciens et les œuvres d’art devraient également être partie intégrante de cette démarche. Il importe de faire preuve de diligence et de tout mettre en œuvre pour garantir la protection de ce fonds d’une valeur collective inestimable.
