i don’t hear ppl talk about judas’ costuming in the jcs 2012 bway revival enough (well no one really talks about this production at all but i’ve ranted about that already) and i really feel like it’s an important part of his character and his story??? i take it as his entire outfit being symbolic for how frightened and paranoid but also how traditional he is because his clothes are literally blue. blue is meant to be a color of protection and divinity in judaism. he wants to be close with god and he wants to keep himself and everyone safe more than anything to the point where he’s cloaking himself in things he knows will ensure that. i mean he literally wears a hamsa for protection, too??? it’s facing right side up so that’s definitely why he’s wearing it. the only question i have when it comes to that is, is he wearing it to protect him from himself or to protect himself from others? maybe both? honestly i could see that one going either way. but none of the other characters have any noticeable signs of keeping these kinds of things close to them. he’s the only one. and it just further strengthens how serious he is about his fear and how helpless he feels when he’s watching everyone get lost in the movement while he still has his concerns and his hesitance about it all. he’s still thinking of them and their safety. i just- i appreciate this costuming choice sm bc we can see so much of his character here. bluedas is blue for a reason i think (or maybe i just read to deeply into this and they just had a lot of blue fabric lying around but i like my idea better) i mean paul tazewell man. he knew what he was doing ( obv he’s brilliant. he did the costuming for hamilton, in the heights, and the wss film too) but yeah. absolutely obsessed with this. look at him. that’s my best friend who also has an anxiety disorder to the point it’s symbolized in his clothes.

💝Throughout February, I’ll be posting 28 unforgettable outfits from film and television that I love. I even made an original logo for this series! My second FebruWEARy pick: Anita’s yellow dress from the “America” musical sequence in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story is absolutely glorious. The way it moves with such purpose makes it more than just an outfit— it’s an extension of Anita herself. This is really just another masterful layer to Ariana DeBose’s performance that rightfully won her an Oscar. She effortlessly controls the dress in order for it to become part of the performance, instead of just something she is wearing. Not to mean, she looks breathtakingly beautiful in it! The complete rearrangement of the tone and staging of this musical number for the 2021 adaptation really enriched the material. Usually, this number is contained to one small space and the choreography is very confrontational and cramped to accommodate it—and while the dance number is still fantastic, it doesn’t serve the story as efficiently as it should. This film takes it off the rooftop and out into the city. By doing so, Spielberg allows it to not only breathe but give it an entirely new life. The choreography really elevates the storytelling as it becomes an outlet for exploration and expression, embodying a spectrum of emotions instead of just a verbal duel. And DeBose never once gets lost or outshined by her surroundings—although, I believe @arianadebose would be equally as magnetic in her performance wearing any color. But it’s important to recognize that costume designer Paul Tazewell was able to create a dress for Anita that expresses her hope for the future, zest for life, and the newfound joy she feels now that she’s in America. It’s bright yellow coloring makes her enthusiasm infectious and the red pedicoat pops with a fiery passion. It’s so much more than just a beautiful dress.💘 #februweary #fashion #puns #myart #anita #arianadebose #westsidestory #westsidestorymovie https://www.instagram.com/p/CogoSoqtRuI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"Suffs" at The Music Box Theatre is a history piece set to music. Based on the suffragettes in the early 1900s, the musical first opened at The Public, and it is written and starred by Shaina Taub as Alice Paul. In first seeing Taub on stage she remained me of Lila Taylor as Valerie Solanas in "I Shot Andy Warhol" Gruff, and ruff around the edges, she spares no prisoners in trying to get woman to vote. Going against the grain of the older, more genteel ladies, Paul is bare knuckles to the point where she ends up in jail.
The musical for the most part is enjoyable with a few exceptions... the show is a bit preachy, condescending at times. The staging is a whole lot better than when it played at The Public; cheap steps are replaced by mahogany paneling. Riccardo Hernandez did a brilliant job staging this big musical. Paul Tazewell's costumes are first rate and Lap Chi Chu supported the show with some deft glam lighting. Director Leigh Silverman has some good moments and some that are not so good. The plot goes from sensational to slow all throughout the two hours and fifteen minutes. The all woman cast goes at a sprinters pace from start to finish, leaving the audience wondering when it will level off. Taub never has us happy for the woman, rather she has them off starting the ERA right after they have been granted the right to vote. This part of the show is confusing because why not end the performance after the 19th Amendment has been passed? It weakens the plot by having the woman not satisfied with this huge victory, it comes off as thankless.
As some songs are really resonant... "Let Mother Vote", "The March" (really strong), "Show Them Who You Are", "The Young Are At The Gates", and "Finish The Fight", others are weak and fall flat. The choreography (Mayte Natalio) is never that noticeable; more bland than anything, we never are awed by the dancing here.
As an all woman cast both Grace McLean as Woodrow Wilson and Tsilala Brock as Dudley Malone are never believable as men. As a period piece (Hamilton comes to mind), Shaina Taub cannot handle the lead. Unlike Manuel who wrote and starred in Hamilton, Taub never overwhelms us with her acting, singing nor dancing. The book, music and lyrics were all written by her but she should have yielded the lead to someone who could have carried this musical to the finish line. Like "Funny Girl", this show will be much stronger when she exits the show as the lead. Whereas Feldstein was awful, Lea Michele brought the show to new heights.
"Suffs" for the most part is enjoyable, it does have some holes in it and they are very noticeable. It is much improved from its days at The Public, yet it is not as of yet completely tight as a Broadway show.
