i don’t know why i find it so hard to believe there was no tension between those two like…i hope the dynamic gets more dynamic in the movie bc

Thoughts about Paul, Chani and Irulan while reading the beginning of Dune Messiah:

Paul seems to have a codependent relationship with Chani. She appears to be the only tie anchoring him to the present, along with reminding him of his earlier years unburdened by duty and far more carefree. Their relationship is tender yet sad with both of them longing for more; freedom, time, love and children. Both of them seem to be grappling with loss and despite their closeness there's this gap between them which manifests itself in their interactions, one that hasn't been bridged, regardless of the obvious love there. I think the affection amplifies what the prophecy took from them both and further ties to the feeling of "we have it all, but we don't all the same"

Irulan deserves better! She's been manouvered as a pawn for so long, been in court with almost no allies, ridiculed and sometimes ignored during council meetings and not given the basic courtesy a wife of the emperor demands. Paul mocks her statements and yet finds it fascinating to observe how she conducts herself. He distances himself from her because she reminds him of everything that went wrong in his life and brought him to the place he's currently in. Her father killed his own, she's a bene gesserit who he blames for what he's become not to mention how similar their upbringing is and how she's embroiled in all the dirty politics around them. Their shared similarity disgusts him because he fears further manipulation and thus chooses to distance himself from her, oftentimes appearing harsh and unjust in the process. The only time we see this change is when he catches Irulan off guard. When she's not controlling herself using what she's been taught, when he can see the cracks in her facade, a gasp, a sigh. It reminds him of the person he's hurting underneath and that's where compassion comes into play but Irulan is a princess, a person capable of so much on her own and his pity stings a woman rightfully proud and trained to be so. I find their dynamic quite interesting because they have what it takes to flourish. The angst, the pining, the shared trauma and want for intellectual pursuit but it's all buried underneath the lies and scheming of those around them.

And lastly I love how with both women, Paul experiences no peace. He seems to search for it with Chani but is burdened by the uncertainty of their future looming ahead, terrorizing and ever present even within the quiet moments they share, and neither can he find it with Irulan because he's burdened by the possibility of her betrayal should he give her an inch. Their relationships are so different yet the same at their core, two women burdened with a man they cannot completely call their own.

He could understand his ambivalent feelings about Irulan, understand Chani's Fremen decision. Under other circumstances Chani and Irulan might have been friends.

Irulan: Obviously, smash.

Feyd: Same. Now your turn.

Irulan: Lady Jessica? She’s

part of House Atreides, right?

Feyd: To be totally honest with you, she’s a closeted Harkonnen at heart but I’ll pass.

Irulan: Why? She’s very pretty.

Feyd: I don’t like space witches. They’re weird and very mean.

Irulan: Like mother, like son.

Feyd: She’s also my evil creepy uncle’s super secret daughter.

Irulan: *sighs* And our monster mother-in-law.😔

Feyd: Don’t remind me.

Irulan: Fine. Thufir Hawat.

Feyd: Pass. Mentats freak me out.

Irulan: Feyd, babe, I thought you like math?

Feyd: Of course I like meth. I even started selling a ton of meth to some of Chani’s fanatical Fremen friends for a very good price.

Irulan: Let me guess, Stilgar?

Feyd: He’s my business partner.

Irulan: Nevermind. Your turn.

Feyd: Doctor Yueh.

Irulan: Does he still counts as part of House Atreides?

Feyd: He tried to kill my creepy uncle and brother. So I guess, yes?

Irulan: Pass. He was married.

Feyd: Your turn.

Irulan: Duke Leto.

Feyd: NGL, I’ll marry, kiss, and smash that one.

Irulan: But isn’t he like your distant uncle or something?

Feyd: You do know that we’re all related to one another, right?

Irulan: Right. We’re all married to Paul. So let’s play another game.

Feyd: How about we annoy and ruin our husband’s very important, very crucial business meetings again?

Irulan: I wish we could, Feyd, but the last time we did that, Emperor “I’m so special, I’m the Lisan Al Gaib” Paul punished us severely-

Feyd: Severely?! He just forced us to water all of his “sacred” arrakis palm trees for 2 weeks!

Irulan: Well, he’s currently talking to that angry looking Gurney Halleck guy. So-

Feyd: All the better!

Irulan: Better? For you?

Feyd: Gurney Halleck hates me. So I want to ruin his day as well.

Irulan: To be fair, Feyd, Gurney only hates you because you’re a living breathing Harkonnen.

Feyd: No, he hates me because I’m obviously perfect and pretty.😌💅

Paul/Feyd/Chani/Irulan and Paul never hears “I love you” but Chani says “I need to trust you again”, and Irulan says “what we do together is most important”, and Feyd-Rautha says “I’d never let my harpies taste your flesh, I’d devour you whole”
