Un des grands écrivains de notre temps. Photographié ici cinq ans avant son décès, il respire la santé, sinon la puissance taurine qui le rendait déjà, plus jeune, bigger than life. Il est notamment l’auteur de romans historiques élevés au stade de légendes, peuplés de personnages mythiques : Lord Byron et les Shelley, Annnie Crook et les victimes de Jack l’Eventreur, Doc Holliday (OK Corral)… Chacun de ses livres exprime sa somptueuse langue poétique, qui franchit étonnamment bien la frontière du français avec le concours d’excellents traducteurs, tel Jean-Pierre Richard ou Serge Chauvin. Ses derniers ouvrages attendent toutefois leur traduction. Le 23eme et ultime n’a pourtant rien d’inactuel : il traite du 11 septembre 2001. Mais il le fait avec une audace de sorcier, “sans la prudence de tant d’artistes américains” (Bill Marx, WBUR radio, Boston NPR). Serions-nous frileux, et hermétiques à la beauté ? Paul West est là pour y pourvoir, avec ses grands poings aussi propres à frapper le clavier qu’à assommer un poltron. Il y a du boxeur chez Paul West…

A lire en anglais (américain) donc, The Immensity of the Here and Now: A Novel of 9.11, 2003. A dénicher sur amazon, ou lors d’un voyage à Oxford ou New York, un essai intitulé Oxford Days - Oxford où West fit ses études. 

Il y a un Paul West essayiste, très prolifique, il y a, on s’y attendait, un Paul West poète…

Towards Wolvesnewton (Sunset), Paul West

Wolvesnewton is a small village in Monmouthshire, south east Wales. I painted a series of works capturing the graphic undulations of the hills and fields as the landscape swept towards the Brecon Beacons in the distance. It would be impossible to capture the view in it’s full glory as the light changes by the second, so I opted for a more graphic interpretation of the main hues at that moment. This painting is one of a series investigating different colour shifts over the landscape.

Alnmouth 8am, Paul West

This painting is a larger, more expansive development of an original study. During a recent fortnight painting holiday in Northumberland, I went for a dawn cycle ride to Alnmouth - arriving at 8 o’clock. The morning light was golden, accentuating the rich earth tones of the countryside. This is a view of the harvested hills in the direction of the town of Lesbury.
