SONY DOESNT CARE IF THEIR PLAYERS GET HACKED
Here’s my story involving SONY today:
My day started out, by waking up to notifications from Sony that my playstation account had been accessed. Okay.
Then a 2-step verification add been activated. Weird. Okay.
Then a charge had been made for $15.99. Not Okay.
Then another charged had been made for $59.99. REALLY NOT OKAY!
At that point, I was already trying to login to my account, and also was contacting my bank along with PayPal, because obviously someone had hacked my account. Turns out I couldn’t login in to my PlayStation account online, because somehow a person in SOUTH KOREA, or using a VPN showing that location had not only changed my password, but also my sign in email.
Unfortunately, PlayStation support wasn’t available until about 3 hrs. later, UGH!
After a VERY long few hours, FINALLY, support became available, (YAY!)
I got a hold of a very helpful individual that gave me access back to my account, which was great. Changed my sign in to a new email, changed my password, deleted all billing information (THANK GOODNESS), and activated a new 2-step verification that was linked to my phone. I thought everything was back to normal, all good. ☺️
2 HOURS LATER…..
Everything was definitely NOT GOOD! 😧
I got notifications on my phone, because someone was trying to use the 2-step verification multiple times, then I get an email saying that my sign in email was changed, my 2-step verification was deactivated, and password was changed AGAIN!
Of course I contact Sony right away through chat online, first person I get says they can’t help me, that I’ve seemed to have contacted support a lot this week, and that I need to use the password reset link, then ends the chat, and cuts me off. (Rude)
Second person, gives me more than 2 min, I explain that I’ve only contacted them just recently, and not all week, so clearly someone is contacting support with my info to get them to change my sign in, and after this, guess what? SAME OUTCOME! Says they can’t help me, and I need to use the reset password link, which sure I would, if THE PERSON HADNT CHANGED MY SIGN IN EMAIL! I had also explained that part to the so called PlayStation Support people, but yet they just kept mentioned the password reset link, like a broken record, then ended the chat, cutting me off, again. (Super Rude!)
If you can’t guess by this time I was pretty frustrated, so I decide to CALL support instead when I’m able to a little later. I couldn’t really call before that point, which is why I was trying to use online chat.
After a long hold, I finally get a live person, and what happened with this person is probably what sent me over the edge.
I explain to this lady exactly what had happened today, in every detail I could manage. Her first question back to me is, you have a child profile? Surprised, I say yes, I made one under my account, and then she asks how easily my child is able to access our PlayStation account. I got a little irritated at that question. I explained to her that my child can not access our account without me present, and that we only have the one console. Then this lady asks me if I can be sure that the child hasn’t accessed the account. I tell her yes I’m sure, my account was hacked THIS MORNING, my child is only 10yrs old, and she was IN SCHOOL when all this nonsense happened.
(Did she think my 10yr old, what?, skipped school, then somehow either went to South Korea, or created a VPN by herself to make it look like it was Korea, just so she could buy some games on my account. Games that she would never play. Seriously? 🤦🏼‍♀️)
It gets better, after I’m trying to tell this lady that my child has nothing to do with this, she then tells me, well maybe my child’s account could still be the culprit, and the person used “hacking means” to go through the child’s profile to get my information.
(Okay fine, whatever, but however this person did it, doesn’t matter. I just need help getting access back to my account and locking out this person.)
So I tell her I just need help getting access back to my account, and stopping this person from getting my information. Her response is, well since I’ve contacted them more than 3 times today, she can no longer access my account due to SECURITY REASONS, and I would have to wait 7 DAYS before they can do anything to help me. Yes 7 DAYS! So I get hacked TWICE, because what they did the first time didn’t stop the person, then they obviously allow him to reset the password again, and give the hacker access. Then the person who the account ACTUALLY BELONGS TO gets the response “well you’ll have to contact us in 7 days.” I can’t access my content, I have time on my PSN account through to March 2022 that I now can’t use for a week, I already lost money because of this hacker, and playstation is telling me I have to wait a week to get it all fixed.
I tell the lady how it’s ridiculous that I have to wait a week to get access to my own account, and she tells me that I can try to RESET my password. (seriously how many times can one of their people suggest that, especially after I’ve told them I don’t have access.) She then says, wait you’ve tried to reset it to many times, so you’ll have to wait on that too, or you can go ahead and create a brand new account. I tell her if I make a new account then im going to lose all the time I previously paid for, right? and she says yes, but theres nothing more they can do. She ends the conversation saying that the reason I got hacked is probably because I have a child account on my console, and that I should definitely call back in 7 days to try to reset my password again. (I will forever hate that phrase “reset password” btw) Then asks me if there’s anything else she can help me with.
I’ve been playing PlayStation since I was a kid, since the original came out. When we could only use discs, and we used toothpaste to try to fix the scratches in desperation because we wanted to keep playing that one game. The stuff that happened with Sony today was really disappointing, and sad to say made me feel like they don’t care much about their players as much as they say they do. They’ve had some major hacking issues before like back in July no less, so obviously there are safety issues, and I’m not making it up. I wasn’t even asking for money, or extra play time, all I wanted was access back to my account, so I could continue to enjoy my stuff. Well I’m not enjoying anything PlayStation related now. Not to mention, there’s a strong possibility after these 7 days are up, I’m going to have them close my account, move on to another system, and sell off my PlayStation. (Maybe Xbox? Or back to PC games? Idk) How can you continue with a company that doesn’t even have support you can count on? All I wanted to do was be able to play my games. It’s a real shame, because I’ve always enjoyed PlayStation, and some of their games were at the top of my favorites list.
Now, because of a really bad experience I feel like I’ll be giving up on a company that I previously had a lot of faith in. I wanted to also share it with anyone out there that’s had trouble with Sony, or to warn people, so they don’t have the same experience.

Lockdown Diary Part 10
A personal account during the lockdown in the UK due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
23/03/2020 8:30pm Boris Johnson, UK Prime Minister, gives a live address to the nation to, effectively, put the country on lockdown to stem the spread of the deadly coronavirus strain, Covid-19.
Many of us have been self-isolating for days but this latest development within the UK in reaction to the pandemic feels very serious and very scary. I decided to keep a simple diary and where better but online. Day 271: Work was dominated by Qfiniti again, including a meeting with Jon and staff from the States, where I found my self taking control to get the next steps in process (and then, Dave Stewart, the SCCM engineer fucked off and put an OOO message on Teams telling me he’s off until Tuesday (it’s Thursday)...and I am off on Monday!) But, I have to say this project does float my boat. Got a text message and then a call from PCH for another laser eye appt this coming Monday at 12.30pm. I mentioned to the lady that phoned that I will have to square it with work (I won’t, but she doesn’t know that) as I can’t afford to lose my job - it just seems the hospital, while under pressue with the admin and the clinic availability - I get it! - just aren’t seeing the issues for the patients. Plus, Peterborough has been declared a Tier 3 from Sunday under the new lockdown scheme, the highest tier. Great...I really want to travel to a highly infected area! managed to find an online booze shop that does Gordon’s and Famous Grouse and will deliver beforee Chrimbo, so I’ve placed the order for dad and Rita’s gift. I spoke with Dad today, he hasn’t heard about his vaccination yet which is a surprise (he’s in the first draft being over 80)
Day 272: Typing on day 273. Work was that manic shit at the end of the dya when I’ve got time off. I am only off on Moday but still had to tie up loose ends, complictaed further by Jon being off next week and Sueanne off this week and the Qfiniti project! In the evening I only mamaged three beers. I ate too much. Plus my sugars were all over the place and way too high! I ordered a torch a couple of days ago (£17), it arrived today. It takes rechargeable batteries or 3 AAAs. Apparently, to get the best performance (i.e. brightness) you need the rechargeable batteries in it, so i charged ‘em. Fucking hell, I’m glad I did - it’s brighter than the sun. It opens up my late walks in winter, for sure.
Day 273: While it was a very late (but sober) night yesterday (gone 4am before lights out) I was up before midday. Usual walking etc. plus gave the bathroom a clean (albeit with wipes, but I did mop the floor - and used the water to also mop the kitchen). Now I am about to stick a pizza in the oven, plus wedges (to have with microwaveable chip shop curry sauce) and watch This Is 40 which is coincidentally on telly tonight - the coincidence being clips of it are on TikTok a lot right now. I am on my second beer and am going to have a smoke right now as well. Lastly for this entry, I have been using my AudioPro speaker today, it pisses me off it’s not WiFi capable but, thru Bt, it does sound fucking good - revisiting James works very well to demonstrate the speaker’s prowess.
Day 274: I have another Paypal a/c. I have been getting emails to my standard gmail account from Paypal saying they are going to charge me £9 for an inactive account which I have been largely ignoring since my paypal a/c has a specific email address. Anyway, I tried to log in, after a password reset and, hey presto, I do have another one, with £35 in it, having just been fleeced of £9 for the aforementioned inactivity, fuckers. It’s registered with the old Market Place address and phone. When I try to transfer the £35 to my card, it wants to confim it’s me by calling the phone, which I can’t amend. Oh, and you can’t contact Paypal direct. Fuck knows what to do! Other than that, usual Sunday, a tad more relaxed since I have tomorrow off, but not that much now I have an eye appointment in Tier 4 Peterborough (it’s been up’d from tier 3)! Up at 1.30 pm (I watched This is 40 and The Guvners last night with lots of beer), feeling worse for wear but, stair climb and a 6 miler acheived!
Day 275: I was at the hospital for 3 hours. The laser clinic didn’t start until 1.30pm so, why my appointment was at 12.20, not even the consultant could understand. 15 minutes of lasering - horrible but I am used to it. It took so long it pretty much fucked my day off up completely. I got a Christmas card from Karen, in the actual post, so, a mail shot. It’s depressing.
Day 276: Back to work and it’s definitely in wind down mode. I’ve decided to compile a list of things I have done this year. It will be on the postive side, such as all the steps I’ve walked and getting an article published about my photography, but it will also include randon facts like getting bitten by a dig twice and not having a haircut. I’ll get it done so I can post in at new year, hopefully be a little inspiring, a little silly and a lot of showing off!
Day 277: Work, again, was quiet. It’s fucking pissing down now, as I type at 21:50, and has been all day. It’s causing havoc and there’s flooding everywhere. I could walk down St. Peter’s Road tonight ‘cos of it (had to go up New Road, Springfield Road, down Latham Road). Soaked a lunhtime and tonight! With a new variant of Coronavirus, France stopped frieght crossing the border. That’s now been resolved but tyeh back log has/is affecting certain food stocks in the shops, of which, fresh veg might affect me for Christams dinner (I plan to do a chicken breast with stuffing, pigs in blankets, yorkshire pud and shed loads of veg. I’ll nip to Co-Op tomorrow morning and see what’s vaialble. It’s a half day at work ‘cos of Christmas Eve, so I can nip out somewhere in the car if need be, as ong as the flooding has subsided. Or I could just get shitfaced and have burgers and pizza.
Day 278: Christmas Eve. Sueanne let me finish at 11.00am so, very shortly thereafter, off for a walk I went; it turned out to be a stop/start affair - flooding as the Nene had burst its banks, ended up doing more of a circuit round town. Bumped into Andy Smith (and his son) and, after that, Ash and Denise. Ended up doing just under 11.5km in 2 and a half hours.Knackered! As I type, I have a chilli on the stove, beer on the go, all the veg and chicken breast bought with no shortages, as feared, for tomorrow’s lunch and looking forward to eating. getting drunk, smoking, listening to music, watching telly....all over the next two/three days.
Day 279: I don’t even remember going to bed last night. As a direct result I got out of bed at 2.30pm. I couldn’t even be bothered with Christmas dinner, let alone anything else like exercise. I’m just about to have chilli for dinner (it’s 8.10pm). Watch some telly then try an go to sleep before midnight. No booze! I did talk to dad earlier. Day 280: Typing on day 281. A better, more productive day. Up @11.00am exercise and walk as usual, although the walk was a different route due to flooding. In the evening I could hear ‘storm Bella’ raging, so windy! I cooked a christmas dinner of sorts, chicken breast with Thyme, all the veg, roasted spuds and parsnip, stuffing (a first for me, albeit co-op stuffing mix), Yorkshie and pigs in blankets. It was smashing! A few beers and The Hitman’s Bodyguard, alays a fun watch. A better day, as I say, but I am feeling particular deflated this Christmas. Day 281: Typing on day 282. I realised, about mid afternoon, that Monday (tomorrow) is a bank holiday so no work. It was a great realisation but, also, worrying that it dawned on my like I’m an old person! Nevertheless, a nice long walk - bumped into Baz & Kate and had a nice long chat, then El & Camila, Aaron and Eva for another, shorter chat. I also saw Denise & Ash along the way. Fog video called later in the evening for a chat too (he told me how he fell asleep at the dinner table, fuck he makes me laugh - unwittingly - when I need it most!) A regular social fest! A repeat of last night’s dinner and a few beers - it was a good day albeit I am in a proper low ebb.
Day 282: Up at midday after a 4am-er. A very long walk (1.75 hours) and a hodge podge dinner (remaining chilli, roasted spuds and peppers, steamed cauliflower and runner beans, grated cheese) - it’s nearly ready, I’ll type the review tomorrow. I realise that this is the first time in 21 Christmases that I have at least talked to K. Is that connected to my mood slump? I reckon so. So, as that fact dawned on me, I then considered, should it be the case next Christmas, it will not be the first in along time and, as such, more manageable....fuck knows how I manage to accentuate any little positive but, thank goodness I do. Day 283: Work was a sedate affair today, fuck all to do really. Sueanne is now follwing me on Insta...I shall invetsigate on how to exclude posts to individuals, methinks. Tea, last night, was fucking lovely. More of the same tonight-ish - currently I am roasting spuds, peppers, garlic, chillies, tomatoes - it’ll all go with left over pigs-in-blankets (5) and a burger. I’ll have bisto beef with mustard on it. I can’t wait! Day 284: Typing on day 285. That meal was fucking lush! Checked on the car todfay and it would not start. Something is draining the battery so I will have to give it a run every day until I can get Julian to sort it. So, I WhatsApp’d Karen to borrow the portable starter. She dropped it off for me. We had the briefest of chats at the doorstep, first time we’ve spoken in weeks. She mentioned my hair! Day 285: NYE. I have just got back from walking to Cottersock and back. I would not have been able to do so without my new torch! I finished and published my double letter quiz on FB, including to the Virtual Pub group and the Oundle Chatter. It’s had some good feedback, I’m rather proud of it. I am going to make chicken casserole now (with dumplings - a first for me, I even bought some flour), have some beers and get a bit stoned. Before that, I am going to finish off my list of things I’ve done this year, including steps wlaked and hours listening on Spotify. I am quite proud of that list too.
Day 286: I fucked the dumplings up, added too much water, so that didn’t happen but the chicken casserole was good, just about to finish it for tea tonight. I also had pizza last night and went to bed at 5am. I have had a lot of good feedback on my list of 2020 achievements. I proud of it. K sent a happy new WhatsApp last night, around 00.30.
Day 287: No booze last night, so I was up before the alarm today (about 10.00am) Two walks, one on my own, another with Fog with a couple of beers. I fucking loved it! Watching datrts (World champs semi finals - been texting Dan while the first one has been on). Going to watch The Aviator later...I’ve not seen it before which surprises me. Why it surprises me I do not know, since I know I haven’t seen it. How the fuck can I be surprised by a fact I’m completely aware of? Day 288: I didn’t watch The Aviator ‘cos Logan Luck was on at 11:55pm on ITV4. Great fildm...I can’t believe that I very nearly paid for it (rent from Sky or Amazon). A late one last night and quite pissed. Thinking about it, having afew beers with Fog in the afternoon made it quite a long sesh for me! Up at just gone midday today, nice long walk (Cotterstock) which was mde long by a painful right ankle - I must have turned or twiested slightly sometime. Still, it survived. Back to work tomorrow - Chrimbo and New Year all done and dusted for the 55th time in my life!
Day 289: First day back at work of 2021. Boris announces another full lockdown in England (there’s a new strain of Covid19 which is seeing huge numbers of infections every day, over 50,000 per day).
Day 290: Something is up with my right foot, the little toe pad. It’s bloody sore. If it gets any worse it’ll affect my walking and exercise. I phoned Anne Bennison to talk about it, she just wants me to go and see her which i donlt want to do if poss, pandemic and all that.
Day 291: Wearing my sandals instead of the M&S slippers and my foot/toepad is already feeling bteer. However, I did inspect my Merrell boots, just in case, and the sole on te right is really worn down, in just three months. I have sent a WhatsApp to CotswoldOutdoors, where I got them from....let’s see what they say! It’s all kicking off i  the US - pro Trump protestors have storm the Capitol Building, where congrees was being held. Only in ‘Merica.
Day 292: Busy at work with rolling out Qfiniti - all that project work was pretty much for fuck all since the SCCM package has to hand held. It’s feckin’ freezing today, below freezing, slippy af on my walks. I have been shopping tonight, £106 in Corby Tesco. That does include 8 cans of sapporo.
Day 293: The fracas at Capitol Hill on Wednesday left 5 dead, it looks like Trump will be impeached. He’s already said he’ll not attend Biden’s inauguration. In a fucking world gone mad, it’s another level of madness. It’s really cold -3℃ tonight, more of the same tomorrow. Makes for brisk walks. I’ve just had chicken balti pie and chips for tea. It was so nice that I burnt the roof of my fucking gob. I’m on the Sapporo and about to have a smoke then watch Jack Reacher. I’ve (kinda) earnt after the first 5 day week for a while.
Day 294: Well, last night saw another late one...5am by the time I :went to sleep. Up at 2pm today with no instention of any exercise or walking or housework or fuck all, really. But, I did my exercises and a 9 mile walk. While I walked I came across Banners, quick 15 min chat and listed to Stage by David Bowie. He’s all over the radio right now as it’s his death’s anniversary tomorrow and his birthday yesterday. It’s a fucking good live album. A few beers tonight, eating trash, watching FA Cup highlights then End of Watch later.  Posh played today (first time in a while due to Covid infections) drew away to (shitty) Lincoln 1-1. Good point as Posh were down to ten men after 67 mins for a second yellow for handball in the area. Lincoln missed the pen. Fucking funny. Chorley, the non leaguers who knocked Posh out in round 2 of the FA Cup, beat Derby in round 3 today (albeit derby fielded an academy side of 11 first timers due to Covid ) - a great day for them!
Day 295: Up at 2pm swearing blind I’d not walk or exercise (again!) but, of course I did. I’ve done over 25 miles this w/e! End of Watch was brilliant last night. Well worth a rewatch, so emotional. I am making butter chicken as I type. I’ve added extra onion, garlic and, of course, chillies. It’s the spiciest butter chicken I have ever tasted! 
Day 296: One of those frustrating days at work when no problem of request I try to resolve goes without a hitch. After a 7km walk in the evening, took the car for a spin and cleaned the bathroom. Fucking knackered. It’s 11:30pm and I’m in bed typing this on the iPad! despite getting up so late, I feel knackered. 11pm bedtime for me, I reckon.
Day 297: Fucking busy at work, the States rolled out a new Okta trust policy and it caused mayhem. Meant my evening walk didn’t start ‘til gone 6pm. When I got back, clened the hall and stairs, made chilli (which I am about to have for tea (gone 10.15pm!) and showered. I’m, again, fucking knackered! Posh played Portsmouth in the EFL Trophy 3rd round at home. Won 5-1. Nice.
Day 298: Had an electrician rouind for the EICR cetrt. He was here until 2pm and it was a pain in the arse, having to work upstairs plus, with having to cut the electricity, all the smart devices lost their settings. And it was freezing up there.
Day 299: Work was impossibly infuriating. Not one pc remote session went to plan! It was pissing down a lunchtime during my walk but, I have to say, the cheap TargetDry coat copes fine in heavy rain for short periods. Everywhere is flooding again even though the rain turned to sleet. By my evening walk, it was dry but bloody cold. Then, when I got in I cleaned the kitchen and mopped the floor and the bathroom’s as well. I fucking done in! Chatted to dad today - same as ever!
Day 300: What a fucking work at week! I am so glad it’s Friday. To celebrate, I ordered new walking boots: Scarpas £121!

POKEMON GO WARNING!
A little background, I am not always playing pokemon go because only time I leave the woods that I live in is for work or Doctor Appointments... So there is months (normally summer months) I CANT PLAY without trespassing (dont want to be shot) or walking 20 miles to town where the majority of the stops and gyms are. (We have two close to my house on either side of a school... School put up a phone signal block so no one but the people inside those buildings can get them now)
So when I heard I was going to be in town all day not that long ago I decided to pull pokemon go up to see what I need to catch, how far to walk, etc. It has been 120ish ferenheight here (48ish Celsius I believe) so I needed to know if I should bring extra bottles of water...
Pokemon gave me the temporary banned screen.

Well this couldn't be right because it was late July and last time I was on was in mid-May.
So I sent them an email stating I have not been on in months. I got 2 replies which I know were automatic replies but still pissed me off.

Here is the dealio... Took me forever but I also called the company and they said I was probably hacked. They would send me a link to be able to reset my passwords and get on again... But the second response is what I got instead of a link ... That is why it pissed me off.
I think I was just over lvl 33 or so and the woman I spoked to told me I pinged in Japan and then Antarctica which I am in Bayou country Louisiana, USA... How the fudge did I ping in those places if I don't leave my house or play often without being hacked? I do know how to spoof but I don't on pokemon go (Jurrassic World Live, In guilty fpr spoofing) so why am I being banned for getting on and following their rules? I have spent money on my account, it is connected to my PayPal but my PayPal you need 3 passwords to get on it unless by my phone and have my finger print (thank you, DSShadow for setting that up for me) So this is just irritating I am being punished for being hacked. And I have been getting flooded with others who have been hacked after getting over lvl30 and it just ain't right.

·         Click the Security tab above your name.
·         Click Update next to "Password."
·         Confirm your current password, enter your new password twice, and click Change Password.
Here's how I change your PayPal security questions:
·         Go to your Profile Icon Settings.
·         Click the Security tab above your name.
·         Click Update under "Security questions."
·         From the "Security question 1" and "Security question 2" dropdown menus, select a question and type its answer.
·         Click Save.
You may bypass the steps above, and update your password and security questions by going straight to the Security page.
You have successfully changed your PayPal password! Just remember to start using it instead of the old one right away. Unlike other more mundane online services like Hotmail Sign in, a few wrong passwords entered into the PayPal login screen, and your account will be blocked until you unblock it by phone!

I am frustrated.
I discovered that my phone number that was linked to my old email addresses, thereby my old YouTube, PayPal, Patreon, and literally every other account I used to have was apparently able to be transferred to a new phone. So I got a new phone. Got the number transferred, went to sign into my old email addresses, AAAAAAAND You have to have a text verification code AND an email verification code to your recovery email address, and well, I kind of changed and didn’t write down the password to BOTH of those accounts, so yeah. I can get the text, but not the email. Isn’t the entire point of being able to get the text verification to be able to reset your password? Since when do you need both? Of course, this is my fault for setting up each email address as the other’s recovery email address and changing the passwords on both to shit I couldn’t remember and didn’t write down, but that doesn’t make this any less infuriating. I had 5,000 YouTube subscribers, 14 Patrons, money in that PayPal, a Steam account I can’t get into anymore without an email verification... The YouTube and Patreon are the worst, it’s like 4 years of work just flushed down the toilet all because I was freaking out that I needed to protect my accounts in a break-up, and too stupid to write the new freaking password down somewhere safe, and of course, Google has no recourse to help with ANY of this. Why do I even keep going at this point?

Navigating and Ordering from Suruga-ya with Tenso
Welcome to my updated guide to ordering through Suruga-ya using the forwarding service Tenso. I hope people don’t mind me taking the images out, but I thought that a text-based approach would be more helpful to people reading it over a range of devices.
If this sounds like a pain, you’ll probably be happier just using a proxy service, although this tutorial should still be of use for searching the site. However, once you get the hang of it, it’s not hard. Ordering yourself also eliminates the possibility that a sale will end before the proxy service is able to process your order, and at least reduces the possibility that an item will be sold out before you get it (Suruga-ya's items are available online and in-store, so there are no guarantees).
A couple of things before we start:
•Buy at your own risk. I’ve ordered from Suruga-ya numerous times without any problems, so it’s not exactly brain surgery. That said, I can’t stand over your shoulder and check your work, which means that any mistakes you make are your own and you’ll have to fix them yourself. So basically...
•...use common sense. Read all of Tenso’s rules, double-check your information when signing up for your account, think twice about buying something if you’re confused by the product description (you can’t return it after you receive it), and, overall, use a proxy service instead if you don’t feel confident buying things from a website in a language that you’re not proficient in.
•There may be mistakes because I am *not* fluent in Japanese (not even close).
•Suruga-ya takes PayPal from international customers, but I’ve read that they no longer accept international credit cards. I’ve also read that “adult” products cannot be purchased without a credit card, but you’ll need to do your own research on that topic (Tenso, for its part, prohibits buying “obscene articles” through its service).
•You should be able to use most of this guide if you’re using a different forwarding service, but you may have to do a little extra work
•This is accurate as of July, 2018. If you’re reading this several years from now, things may have changed (they’ve made several updates to their website just recently and will likely continue to).
Still here? Then continue under the cut to get started.
First, sign up for an account with Tenso, a Japanese mail-forwarding company. Make sure you read all the information about their fees, shipping options, prohibited items, etc., before you sign-up (I’ve seen people who were turned off by the identity verification part, in particular).
After you’ve done that, go to the ‘My Page’ section.  There will be a box at the top that says ‘[Your Name]’s Tenso address,’ with a link at the bottom that says ‘How to enter your Tenso address.’ Click on that; there are several helpful examples, but all you need is the top one labeled ‘General Guide.’
Next, go to Suruga-ya. At the top of the page, to the right of the search bar, you’ll see a blue icon next to the word ‘サインイン (sign in).’ Click on it. [If you’re trying to do this on Suruga-ya’s mobile site, click on ‘マイページへ/to My Page’ under the logo.]
✸Creating an account/signing in:
On the right, you’ll see two boxes for signing in. The top says “e-mail address (メールアドレス)” and the bottom says “password (パスワード ).” Once you’ve entered those, you can click on the orange button and you’re in. If you’ve forgotten your password, click on the link below the password box (パスワードをお忘れの方はこちら) to reset it.
On the left, you’ll see two buttons allowing you to sign-in/create an account with either your facebook or Google account. If you’d like to do that, go ahead, but I can’t guide you. To create a wholly new account, click on the white button below those two (新規アカウントの作成) and follow the steps below. [mobile users: the white ‘new account’ button is right below the orange ‘sign-in (サインイン)’ button]
✸ Account creation: fill in these steps one-by-one. If an error occurs when you try to submit, copy the warning text and paste it into Google translate to troubleshoot.
Note: several of the text boxes specify that you must use half-width characters (半角英数). If you don’t know what that means, you probably don’t need to worry about it. If you do know what it means, you should use half-width characters when entering your e-mail and password (copy and pasting your Tenso address takes care of the rest).
✸メールアドレス (アカウント)=“E-mail address (account)”=your e-mail address
✸メールアドレス (確認)=“E-mail address (confirmation)”=re-enter your e-mail
✸パスワード=“Password”=must be between 6-12 characters (No mention of whether symbols or spaces may be used in addition to letters and numbers, so keep that in mind when creating your password)
✸パスワードの確認=“Confirm Password”
This next part is where things get a little more difficult.
✸お名前=“Name”=this line has two input boxes. Japanese users would enter their name in kanji, but international users can use the Latin alphabet here (or whatever alphabet you use, although I can’t guarantee the site supports all of them).
—姓=“Surname/last name”
—名=“First name”
✸フリガナ=“Furigana (i.e, not kanji)”=here, you’ll need to write your name in katakana. You can use this page to get the katakana spellings.
—セイ=“Surname/last name”
—メイ=“First name”
For the next several lines, you’ll want to refer back to your Tenso address. Tenso’s general guide and Suruga-ya use the same order and kanji labels, which is really handy in filling this out. I’ll also include the label translations, just in case.
✸郵便番号=“Postal code/zipcode”
✸都道府県=“Prefecture”=this one should auto-update after you input the zipcode
✸市区町村=“Municipality”
✸番地=“Address/unit number“
✸ビル・マンション名=“Building/Apartment name”
✸電話番号=“Phone number”
Hard part’s done! The next section is optional: it lets you sign-up for e-mails about product categories, which I never do, so I’m going to skip it.
Scroll down, and you’ll see a box containing the site’s terms of service. Copy and paste them into Google translate and give them a read; they’re pretty straightforward and it only takes a minute to go over them. Below that, it will ask you if you agree to the site’s terms and want to continue your registration (規約に同意してアカウント登録を行いますか?), followed by two buttons.

✸いいえ=“No”=click this button to cancel your registration
That should do it, although you’ll still need to confirm your account by clicking on a link in an e-mail they’ll send you. After that, it’s time to shop.
✸Searching/categories: In most cases, you’ll need to search using Japanese characters (i.e., kanji, hiragana, katakana) to find what you want. Try checking wikipedia/fan wikis/Anime News Network, etc. if you want to find the Japanese title for a manga/anime. Searching for stuff is pretty easy; just enter what you’re looking for in the purple search box at the top of the page. The default is to search all categories (全商品), but you can refine that with the category menu to the left. The categories are games (ゲーム), DVD/video (映像ソフト), music (音楽ソフト), toys/hobbies (おもちゃ・ホビー), PC software (PCソフト), books (本), electronics (電気製品), food/food premiums (食品・食玩), miscellaneous goods/accessories (雑貨・小物), and doujin (同人).
Update: I’ve found that you can use romaji to search for many titles. For example, if you type ‘Naruto’ into the search bar, then ‘ナルト’ will indeed be the first suggestion that comes up. Convenient, no?
✸Advanced search (詳細検索): this link is to the right of the search box. I honestly don’t use it, and it would be a hassle to go over all the options, so I’m skipping it for the most part. It does, however, allow you to search by ISBN, JAN, control number (管理番号), or standard code (規格コ-ド), which is useful.
The next three setting are found right above the product listings.
✸R-18 products: you have three options for displaying adult (アダルト) goods---show (表示), hide (非表示), and show only (のみ). Please be aware that some forwarding and proxy services have rules against buying or shipping adult goods for international customers.
✸Show sold-out goods (品切れ): ON or OFF
✸Sorting (並べ替え): default is “開連順,” which is basically sorting by relevance. The rest are cheapest first (値段が安い順), most expensive first (値段が高い順), newly added/updated first (更新の新しい順), newest release date first (発売日の新しい順), and oldest release date first (発売日の古い順).
✸Item status: these appear in green next to the item’s category/right below the product image.
—“Newly arrived goods (新入荷)”
—“Price-cut (値下げ)”=; after an item has been at the store for long enough, they may lower the price
—“Increasingly popular (人気上昇中)”=this accompanies a price increase
✸Release date (発売日): self-explanatory
✸Sold out (品切れ): If you have “show sold-out goods” set to “ON,” this will appear in red below the release date. Sold-out goods will also be shown if they can be purchased through one of the new “other shops” that Suruga-ya is listing on their site,
✸Condition: these markers now appear before the price—”new (新品)”, “used (中古)“, and “pre-order (予約)”. The kanji directly after the price means “including tax (税込).” Sometimes, both a new and used version of a product may be for sale at the same time, so you’ll see two prices; be careful to add the version you want to your cart. Suruga-ya also includes the “list price (定価)” below the store price. If you see “Rank B (ランクB)” in a product title, that means that it has more serious condition issues, so pay attention to the description.
✸NEW “Other shops (他のショップ)”: Suruga-ya seems to be trying an Amazon Marketplace-type scheme where they also give you prices for items that are available through affiliated shops. This is below the “list price,” and it’s a link that takes you to a page to compare prices/see vendor ratings/etc. Even if you have “show sold-out goods” turned to “OFF,” you will still see items listed if they are only available through a third-part seller. I haven’t used this option yet, so I can’t tell you exactly how things work out,
✸Adding items to your cart/wishlist: On product pages, there’s a big orange button with a cart that’s for...adding the item to your cart. The button below it with a star is for adding it to your favorite list. If the item is sold out, you’ll see a green button that allows you to add it to your backordered items watchlist.
After you add an item to your cart, you’ll get a pop-up with two boxes. The blue one basically says “keep shopping,” while the orange one says “continue to check-out.”
✸ Cart/checking out: when you’re ready to check-out, click the big orange button (注文画面に進む/proceed to order page) on the right side of the page. You can also delete (削除) items or move them to your favorites list (お気に入りリスト). The shipping prices are in a gray box on the right. You usually get free shipping for orders over 1500 yen, but the threshold may be lower during sales.
The next page is a list of more of their site policies. Open up Google translate again and look them over. Most of it isn’t really important, but some of it you may find useful, such as how they package items for shipping or when they process orders. At the bottom, click “はい(yes)” to continue if you accept these policies.
On the next page, you’ll see your personal and shipping information displayed, followed by several payment options. Make sure PayPal is selected. Click on the orange button at the bottom (ご注文内容なにの確認へ /confirm the contents of your order) to continue. You’ll see another page with all the details of your order; if everything looks right, click the orange button (決済情報の入力へ /enter payment information) again to proceed to PayPal to authorize Suruga-ya to charge your account (they don’t actually charge you until your order is shipped). That should be it.
After your order is placed, you’ll get a confirmation e-mail as well as a notification on your My Page staying that your order was received. If any of your items are sold-out (their items are for sale in their physical stores as well as online) they’ll apparently send an e-mail asking you to contact them and confirm that you still want them to mail the rest of your order. This hasn’t happened to me yet, so I can’t say how that works, although I’ve seen people write that they just used Google translate to create a reply and it worked fine (probably best to write something short and simple). The e-mails that I’ve received have all been basic ‘here’s what you ordered, don’t respond to this’ messages that you always get when shopping online.
Now you get to play the waiting game. Orders can take more than a week to ship, so be patient.
Below are some additional bits of information that you may find helpful while shopping.
✸Time Sales
Suruga-ya often has "time sales (タイムセール)” that usually last 1-2 days and only apply to certain categories/items; the amount of money that you have to spend to get free shipping may also be lowered. If there’s a time sale on, there should be a banner at the top of the site with the date(s) and time range (usually 12:00-23:59 JST) for the sale. Items that are part of the sale will have ‘タイムセール’ written in green above their price on search pages.
✸My Page/account page (マイページ)
—お知らせ一覧=notice list (the most recent ones appear on your my page by default). The 3 types of notices you usually get are that your order was received, that your order is being prepared, and that your order was shipped.
—ご購入履歴=purchase history
—売却履歴=sales history. This applies to people who have sold items to Suruga-ya. Not applicable to people outside Japan.
—見積履歴=estimate history. This applies to people who have sold items to Suruga-ya. Not applicable to people outside Japan.
—閲覧履歴=browsing history
—入荷リスト=(backordered) goods received list. If you’ve added items to your backorder list, they’ll appear here if they’re now in stock.
—入荷待ちリスト=backorder list. You can add sold-out goods to this list so you’ll be notified if they’re restocked.
—お気に入りリスト=favorites list, which includes the following options:
••新しいお気に入りリストを追加する=add a new favorites list (click 新規登録する button to confirm)
••商品を追加するお気に入りリスト=add items to favorite list (use the drop-down list to select which list you want items to be added to by default)
••カートに入れる=add item to cart
••入荷待ちリストに追加する=add item to backorder list
••リスト名を集編する=change list name (click ‘変更’ to confirm change)
—速報メール確認·変更=confirm/change mail notifications
—登録クレジットカード確認·削除=confirm/delete credit card information. Not applicable to people outside Japan. I think.
—身分証画像を更新=update ID card image. Not applicable to people outside Japan.
—本人確認番号の登録·削除=register/delete personal identification number. Not applicable to people outside Japan.
—登録情報確認·変更=confirm/change registration information (name, address, e-mail, etc.)
—お知らせ機能設定確認·変更=confirm/change notification settings

So, a few nights ago, a couple of my logins had been hacked. My eBay, DoorDash and Walmart accounts had been hacked. I just happened to have awaken at 1am and looked at my email to notice a message stating that I had tried to change my password and if it weren’t me, click the link. By the time that I clicked it, the person had already gotten into my eBay account and listed an item and changed the PayPal information to receive money from the sales. Someone had already tried to purchase one thing listed. I immediately changed that password and deleted their PayPal info. I also informed the buyer, so that they didn’t pay for the item. I then called eBay and they placed a block on my account. 🤦🏽‍♀️ 🤦🏽‍♀️ 🤦🏽‍♀️ By the time I was done with all of that, my @doordash account had been invaded. The person had changed the email and telephone number, so that I couldn’t change any information. I was at least able to delete the cards and the addresses from the saved information. The person had access to my DoorDash account for several days because DoorDash doesn’t have smart people to understand the term “hacked” and that they changed my information, so they can’t send me a password reset email. Needless to say, I was up from 1am until noon trying to change all of my passwords on multiple sites to ensure that the person couldn’t hack anything else. I was on the phone with my email server trying to make sure that the person didn’t have access to my email as I’m not sure how they were able to change the password without having that access. PLEASE use those complicated passwords that iPhone is offering and save it in your cloud if needed. This could’ve been a horrible situation had I not awaken and checked my email. My plan was to wake at 11am that morning and not 1am.
