I’m not going to argue your point from a “actually god loves women uwu” standpoint because that would be silly, nor am I going to try to make you recognize my specific feminist identity or actions or whatever. However, I would like to point out that by disregarding the ability for religious women to be feminists so completely, you are blatantly ignoring and undermining numerous feminists throughout history, including some of the first recorded as having an academic and societal impact.

Hrotsvit of Gandersheim, born in the first millennium (935–1000) who was not only the first female playwrite but the first medieval paywrite all together, wrote overtly feminist plays with strong, gnc female characters, in religious plays. You discredit her work as a feminist.

Hildegard bon Bingen, a scientist, physician, composer, theologist, etc etc etc. Who paved the way for women in science, medicine, music, and many other fields (1098–1179). She fought for women’s right to the same education of men, and permanently changed almost every field she touched. You discredit her effects as a feminist.

Christine de Pizan, often credited as the originator of the feminist critique of marriage. She wrote extensively about core topics feminists still talk about today, such as the inequality of marriage, the education of girls, the financial abuse of men, the social positioning of women as objects to be bought, and many others, as far back as 1364– ~1430. These are topics you yourself care about and discuss now, no? Yet you discredit her.

Often, religion was even the motive behind the feminist action.

Though I am not keen on the Arab capture of the Levant, I must recognize that Khawlah Bint Al-Azwar (died ~639) and her legacy has paved the way for women in the military and being strategic leaders.

Jeanne d’Arc, to this day a symbol of female strength and of breaking gender roles and expectations, was explicitly religious in her motives. She is one of the most notable feminist icons of modern history, people worldwide know about her, girls everywhere have her to look up to. The reason these women are known is because they felt so strongly about their religions. Are you saying that that discredits their impact? That they should not be revered as feminist symbols? That their actions are null?

All these women are from centuries ago, but there are thousands more examples from both before and especially after of women who were religious and extremely successful feminists. It feels unfair to say that they are the equivalent of “meat eating vegans”.
