The only reason inkjet printers still exist is to drain consumers' wallets. The people who make the hardware and the ink make a killing off of them because people use way more ink than actually ends up being printed on paper and hardware needs to be replaced often due to inherent flaws with liquid ink printing.

Most people know that printer ink already costs more than gold by weight. It also dries out easily. If it dries inside the printer head, the dried ink damages the printer and the whole machine usually has to be replaced. Printers compensate for this fundamental problem by occasionally spraying ink thru the nozzles even when it's not used, which wastes ink. Some folks unplug the printer to stop this, but it is even worse if ink dries and clogs the nozzles.

Meanwhile, laser and even color laser printers cost about the same price these days for the hardware. Laser prints are cleaner and crisper. They don't smudge. Toner costs a little more on the front end but it lasts marathons. Toner also lasts for an estimated number of pages and actually keeps true to it since toner does not dry out over time, even after years, which makes laser the best option for people who print infrequently. This means no more replacing printers that don't work due to clogged heads and throwing out half-full ink cartridges that won't work.

On the subject of color printers in general: monochrome is still the cheapest and best option for most people. For those considering a color printer, ask yourself how many times you need to print in color over the course of a year. Remember that the best looking photos are printed professionally, like from Mpix or shutterfly or even many pharmacies and grocery stores -- they also cost less than the maintenance of a color printer unless you do it all the time.
