The pictured PiDP-11 replica doesn't really do justice to the size of the machine. Here's a real PDP-11/70 mounted in a rack along side of several other DEC minicomputers of the PDP-8 and PDP-11 lineage and beyond. These examples are present at the Large Scale Systems Museum in Pittsburgh, PA.

Here's an example of an earlier model, the PDP-11/20 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA.

And this big heavy thing is just the computer. Without peripherals like mass storage in the form of paper tape, magnetic tape, disk packs, floppy drives, etc. or interfaces like teletypes or terminals, this thing isn't all that useful. It's just the computer.

Probably one of the single most important computers to computing history, the 16-bit PDP-11. This minicomputer and its 22 year lifespan birthed UNIX and the C programming language, as well as setting the stage for the office computer properly. They build them for about 20 years, in various forms from the 70s to 1990, and the last version of UNIX for it was made in 1992. Remember Kids, IBM was important to the computer, but DEC were the true harbingers of modern computing.

This is the kind of Lunar Lander game I remember playing as a kid in the mid 70s, perhaps my first interaction with a real computer. It was running on a PDP-11 (I am guessing) at the Talcott Mountain Science Center in Avon, Connecticut.

This place is a former Nike missile radar station, decommissioned in the late 60s. You drove for several miles through the woods, past the abandoned mounting pads for the radar antennas, to reach the site at the top.

Lunar lander itself is a simplistic game, you enter a fuel burn time each round and adjust it based on your velocity and remaining fuel, and try to reach the surface with as little delta-V as possible. (Usually with an amusing message if you failed)

Although this was text-only and you had only one input to give, the physics being modeled was real, and for me it was quite an immersive experience.

It was only a couple years after people had actually landed on the moon, and getting the chance to drive a lunar landing simulation on a real computer at a science center that was once a missile base, well that was astronaut stuff as far as preteen me was concerned.

I don't know that I have ever had as compelling a gaming experience since.

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, who was  barred from entering the United States due to allegations of judicial corruption, has been sworn in as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House. She succeeds Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who retired after reaching the mandatory age of 70. So fun thing about USENET: it grew out of the printer spooler

Unix was first developed internally at Bell Labs, which had a wide array of computer systems (Unix happened cuz they used the tiny PDP-11, originally PDP-7, that Bell didn't care what they did with).

Anyway, they wanted to be able to print on the really nice line printer on a Bell mainframe. Their solution was to let the printer spooler connect to this other system like a normal user at a terminal, log-in to an account, copy the text of the print into a file, issue the print command, and then delete the remote file when it was done.

As the number of Unix systems increased thruought the '70's, this was generalized into the "Unix-to-Unix Copy Program" -- the awfully named UUCP. It worked the same way -- login to another unix system with a special account that only had permissions to its own folder + a couple programs, upload files, and run a remote command on them -- such as printing.

But you could also extend this with email capability! They already had a dirt-simple mail program that cud write to users on the local system (lookup their home directory and prepend the message to a ".mbox" file there, that was pretty much it). Modifying this to UUCP the message and running mail on the remote the machine was easy as pie.

And you could go further! UUCP let you chain a file to get set to a remote computer several computers away, copying it down the chain until it got to the destination you wanted to run the command on. So you might have a home machine that connected to your local office that connected to a local university that connected to a bigger university, etc etc.

And USENET was built on top of this! Your local USENET system would "subscribe" to several channels, and then it would use UUCP to sync any posts on those channels -- downloading what they had that you didn't, and uploading the reverse.

They got this more or less for free. Obviously it wasn't very secure. But it had the bonus of making every USENET server carry around a complete archive of its channels, which is why USENET is so well preserved.

¿Y si C ha trascendido su función original para convertirse en la 'lingua franca' entre lenguajes?

Aria Beingessner fue en su momento integrante de los equipos responsables de implementar los lenguajes Rust y Swift, de modo que su opinión sobre el desarrollo de software no es una que podamos descartar sin más miramientos, ni siquiera cuando sostiene en su blog una teoría tan controvertida como la de que "el lenguaje C ya no es un lenguaje de programación".

En primer lugar, acusa a C de fragmentación ("C está en realidad horriblemente mal definido debido a sus mil millones de implementaciones") y de tener "una jerarquía de enteros totalmente fallida"; esto último se refiere a que, según el modelo de datos usado —LP32 para Win16, ILP32 para Win32 y Unix 32 bits, LLP64 para Win64 o LP64 para Unix 64 bits— el valor de enteros varía, pudiendo traducirse en datos 'int' de 16 o 32 bits, datos 'long' de 32 o 64 bits, equivalencias entre int y long o entre long y pointer, etc).

Sin embargo, para Beingessner ambos detalles son meramente accesorios: no es en eso donde reside su principal preocupación…

Una 'lingua franca' que limita a las nativas

"Mi problema es que, como C ha sido elevado a una posición de prestigio, su reinado ha resultado ser tan absoluto y eterno que ha terminado distorsionando por completo la forma en que nos hablamos entre nosotros. Rust y Swift no pueden limitarse a usar sus lenguajes, nativos y cómodas… sino que deben envolverse en un grotesco disfraz de la piel de C y hacer que su carne ondule de la misma manera que éste lo hace".

A lo que Beingessner se refiere aquí, en su florido lenguaje, es al hecho de que C no es un mero lenguaje de programación porque se ha convertido en algo más que eso: en un "protocolo", uno que "todo lenguaje de programación de propósito general necesita hablar".

Es decir, cualquier lenguaje que desee acceder a la entrada de datos del usuario, escribir en la salida del sistema, manipular ficheros, etc… necesita interactuar con la interfaz de su sistema operativo. Y para ello, dado que la mayoría de sistemas operativos está desarrollado en C, cada lenguaje se ve forzado a llamar a las API de C a través de las interfaces de funciones foráneas.

En definitiva, que incluso si nunca jamás en nuestra vida llegamos a escribir código C, un desarrollador deberá manejar variables C, hacer coincidir estructuras y diseños de datos con los de C, etc. Y no sólo al comunicar el software con el sistema operativo: también al intentar comunicar dos programas entre sí.

En realidad, este papel de C visto como 'API' del resto de lenguajes de programación está muy relacionado con declaraciones recientes de Bjarne Stroustrup (creador de C++) sobre cómo los 'lenguajes de programación seguros' que buscan sustituir a C/C++... en realidad siguen dependiendo de ellos.

Y aunque fuera un lenguaje de programación, no sería de bajo nivel

Además, si somos precisos, aunque no coincidamos con la opinión de Beingessner, tampoco podemos considerar a C un lenguaje de programación de bajo nivel, que es como se le ha categorizado toda la vida.

Un lenguaje de bajo nivel es aquel que está 'cerca del hardware', en el que sus instrucciones vienen condicionadas por la estructura física de los computadores que lo ejecutan. Pero C se desarrolló en los años 70 con la mente puesta en las gigantescas computadoras PDP-11, no en nuestros pequeños equipos Intel o ARM.

Tal y como recoge este paper de 2018 publicado por la Association for Computing Machinery (titulado, precisamente, "C no es un lenguaje de programación de bajo nivel"),

"La causa originaria de las vulnerabilidades Spectre y Meltdown radica en que los arquitectos de procesadores no estaban tratando de construir procesadores rápidos, sino procesadores rápidos que exponen la misma máquina abstracta que un PDP-11. Esto es esencial porque permite a los programadores de C seguir creyendo que su lenguaje está cerca del hardware subyacente".

OSU Hexapod by Robert McGhee (1976), Ohio State University. The Hexapod weighs 300 pounds and is controlled by a PDP 11/70 computer via an umbilical cable. Each leg has three degrees of freedom powered by motors from electric drills, similar to McGhee's earlier 'Phoney Pony'. It's an early demonstrator for active compliance, where it senses the force exerted by each foot, and uses this to control the applied torque. Each leg has a goal position but in real-time it relaxes this goal, trading position for increased torque.

ARM THE TEAM. For a few reasons:

Poaching is a serious issue, all around the world. Illegal hunting and trade of animal parts has turned many parts of the wilderness into ganglands.

The team may have to stay in towns around reservations or to restock, or they may have to research animals who reside in active warzones. Some of these towns may be rife with crime or suffer from active terrorism, and they may need to defend themselves.

Animals are dangerously unpredictable. It may be necessary to defend yourself against an animal, and that may require a firearm.

Therefore, I believe the Tortuga would have an armory. But what would it contain? Here are some of my ideas:

Handguns

Walther PDP 4" (9mm Luger. A solid personal defense pistol that won the 2021 Industry Choice Award and the 2021 G&A Handgun of the Year Award. Reliable brand, reliable caliber, reliable power.)

Glock 17 Gen 5 (9mm Parabellum NATO. The industry standard in personal defense, used by hundreds of militaries and police departments around the world. Considered one of the world's most reliable handguns.)

Taurus Judge (45 Colt/.410 Gauge Shell. The Wrist Destroyer 9001. The Pain Machine. The closest a revolver can come to being an Elephant Gun. Used in wild boar hunting.)

Shotguns

Remington Model 870 Hardwood Home Defense (12 Gauge Slug. THE duty shotgun. Used by basically every police force and military in the world. There is a reason why over 11 million of these have been made since 1950.)

Mossberg 590A1 (12 Gauge Slug. The police forces and militaries that aren't using the Remington 870 are using this.)

Rifles

Colt M4 Monolithic (5.56 NATO. What was the US Army standard rifle for most (if not all) of the GWOT. Reliable.)

Winchester Model 70 Super Grade (.308 Winchester. The CLASSIC bolt-action hunting rifle. Used for sport by the brothers.)

Now, why do they use these? Simple: THEY WORK.

These firearms have stood the test of time by defending people around the world. The Team doesn't care about flashiness or cool factor. They care about being able to depend on their weapon system when their lives are on the line. And what more can you ask for of a gun?

My first game.

My first exposure to video games was like many others, in the arcades and eventually onto home consoles like the Magnavox Odyssey, a machine so primitive that you had to pretend to have the cursor follow the lines. And If you wanted a theme such as a  haunted house or a roulette wheel, you would put a Mylar overlay on your TV that would use static electricity to hold it up.  “Back in my day, we didn’t even have color for our game systems”, shouts the old man.

I had no idea how the game magically appeared on the screen until I started to gain access to computers.

The first computer I ever had access to was an old mainframe called a PDP-11, this was in the day before there were monitors. Every command and piece of feedback was printed out and you backed up your code using paper tape, a technology similar to the tickertape that went back to the 19th century. I remember how amazed I was when they brought a CRT/Monitor in and I no longer had to print every command. Gaining access to the PDP-11 could only be done at nights and on weekends at my high school through permission of the school. It was a great opportunity to meet a group of guys that were much smarter than me, a lesson that would serve me well.

I was very fortunate that my parents could afford to buy me an Apple II computers in the late 70’s, this is when the light bulb really went off in my head that I could learn how to program and eventually make games. I spent every waking hour I could playing games and learning how to code.

After playing enough games, I decided that I would set off to do it myself. I decided to make a graphic adventure since it was one of the few genres I could program, BASIC was not a problem but my 6502 Assembly coding was not up to par. In fact, I needed one piece of code called a recursive fill that would quickly fill in the enclosed blank areas with a color. The only way I was going to get that done was to pester the hell out of my friend Randy Walsh, one of the guys I met in the PDP-11 rooms. I had no money so I had to just beg him for 6 months straight until he did it. Once his part was completed, I was able to finish the rest and hand duplicate 500 copies of the game “The Demon’s Forge”. It was a very amateurish effort by a high school kid but it was critical in all the lessons it taught me.

I took my first game to completion and learned about the need for marketing, I was off to the races.

 * Below is an ad for the game. I only had a few hundred dollars for package art so I had to buy a finished piece and this was the only fantasy work I was able to find. While it captured the mood, there were no guys flying on great eagles or women to rescue. I was teased quite a bit about this. My favorite bullet point from the back of the packages was “16 entirely different colors”. The word “entirely” really made the concept pop in my teenage mind.
