What is crowdsourcing?
The term crowdsourcing is used in the Internet world to refer to communities that contribute to providing a service, generate ideas, create content (such as publications), improve a design or develop a new technology. Current technology, Internet speed and communication networks, allow such collaboration to be over distances and borders.
The crowdsourcing is not an exclusive term Internet. It has been used before to refer to efforts of people who voluntarily contribute to the achievement of a goal. The power of convocation became much larger thanks to the concept of sharing and socializing using the Internet, a concept known as web 2.0.
The word comes from the combination of the English words crowd and outsourcing , which means crowd and outsourcing respectively, hence in Spanish it is also known as mass outsourcing, Capital smart city distributed collaboration or mass outsourcing.
Types of crowdsourcing
There are four main types of crowdsourcing , although some authors identify more, the following are the most commonly used:
1. Collective Creation ( Crowd Creation ) .– This type is used for activities that involve some form of creativity. The key to being done on the Internet is dual: on the one hand people do not bully to give their opinion, especially if they do not have a doctorate; On the other hand, a fresh point of view, sometimes inexperienced, is usually a key ingredient for innovative thinking.
2. Collective voting (Crowd Voting). - It seeks to make the community categorize and filter content, such as movies, music and articles. An obvious example of this type of crowdsourcing is that of television programs such as American Idol or The Voice, which use the vote of viewers to make decisions. Collective voting is the most used type of the four.
3. Collective wisdom (Crowd Wisdom). - As the name implies, it seeks to gather and harness the knowledge of a group of people for an end. It has been found that the collective wisdom of people outside a company gives more efficient results than an internal group.
4. Collective financing (Crowd Funding). - It seeks to use the combination of financial resources of a group to finance a person or a cause. It is commonly employed by artists who require financing. A recent example of this type of crowdsourcing is the Spanish film El Cosmonauta (link to IMDB in English), which was funded by small donations.
Crowdsourcing Examples
These are some real examples where crowdsourcing has been used or is being used :
My Starbucks Idea. - Created by the Starbucks company, it is a page (in English) for people to share their own ideas or ideas built based on other people's ideas. Discussions are allowed and ideas seem open to anyone who wants to see them. It also has a section that shows the ideas that have been launched or initiatives that have emerged thanks to the ideas collected on this page. It is a good example of crowdsourcing .
Open Xerox. - This page (in English) is a portal that shows prototypes of technology that are not yet launched as a final product, but are offered to the user community to be tested in cases they believe are applicable to life daily The part that crowdsourcing enters comes with comments and suggestions, which the company uses to make adjustments or make decisions.
LEGO CUUSOO. - It is a page (in English) of LEGO, which invites you to share an idea, a concept, for a LEGO product and expose it to receive comments from other people. If your suggestion reaches 10,000 followers or more, the company makes a review of your suggestion so that it becomes an official product. If your idea is accepted and becomes an official product, the company offers you 1% royalty on the sales generated by that product.
Akzo Nobel Open Space. - This page is from a painting company that offers an open space to allow people to share ideas about problems or simply some promising or innovative idea. Being an open space, construction on ideas already exposed is allowed, creating a collaborative environment.
Pearlfinder. - This page (in English) was created by the Beirsdorf company - skin care products - in order to allow people from anywhere in the world to share ideas about challenges the company faces, creating a network of innovation and creativity. Through crowdsourcing the company seeks to find innovative ideas.
G-Win. - It is a network created by the University town Islamabad General Mills company - food products -, seeks to connect with groups of people who propose solutions in their areas of products, packaging, processes, ingredients, techniques and digital marketing.
