Horror Movie of the Day: Satan’s Slave (Pengabdi Setan, 1980)

When it comes to religious horror, films inspired by Islam are hard to come by. So when Sisworo Gautama Putra took on the challenge to try and do it, the end result was always guaranteed to be noteworthy in some way.

Inspired by Phantasm (1979), the plot follows a Muslim family who are grieving the death of the mother. Being a fairly secular and lax with their faith, however, they don’t properly pray for the funeral rites and the son is soon visited by her ghost. Thus, as a new maid called Darminah joins the family and they find solutions to their grief in the worldly ways, their lives spiral out of control against the supernatural phenomena of kuntilanak (an Indonesian demonic entity, courtesy of cultural syncretism).

To reinforce the value of a certain religion is an inherent part of the subgenre for sure. However, that ends up awkwardly heavy handed here, lacking nuance or applicability elsewhere and coming across as a preachy “be a good Muslim or the spooky ghosts will haunt you”. This is a result of the family dynamic being quite underbaked and the causal connection of the events not being strong enough to bring a meaningful conflict out of it's setup. Then there's the visuals. At their best? The supernatural entities look effectively creepy and otherworldly thanks to the right framing. Their worst? They look like cheap Halloween party costumes, ||Darminah’s|| demonic appearance being particularly on the comical side.

The issues here might be the film having its wings clipped by national policies, though, as it was created under the regime of president Suharto (which meant there was some heavy guidleines about it's depiction of morals). Otherwise, it be hard to explain those brushes of ingenuity when the film does manage to get under your skin in spite of it's clearly limited budget.

It's such a mixed bag, but it's great that it exists since it inspired greater things.

The situation got scarier when they found out that their mother had come again, not just to visit them, but to pick them up.

Pengabdi Setan (2017)

Pengabdi Setan, also known as Satan's Slave, is an Indonesian horror movie written and directed by Joko Anwar who also worked on other Indonesian horror films such as Perempuan Tanah Jahanam (Woman of the Damned Land aka Impetigore, 2019) and Ratu Ilmu Hitam (The Queen of Black Magic, 2019).

In the film, the matriarch who fell ill more than 3 years ago passed away under mysterious circumstances, setting a chain of horrific motions haunting her children Rini (Tara Basro), Tony (Endy Arfian), Bondi (Nasar Anuz), and Ian (Muhammad Adhiyat). Set in the early 1980s, Joko Anwar sets the mood with dim lighting and plot twists, evoking a building sense of suspense that climaxes into a horrific peak involving fertility cults and zombified pocongs.

Aside from the riveting storyline and awesome cast and crew, one thing that stuck with me is the soundtrack. Throughout the entire movie, snippets of Kelam Malam, performed by The Spouse and introduced as the matriarch's hit song early in the film, further set the mood playing throughout the movie with its haunting melody and suggestive lyrics.

The easter egg ending features Darminah who, for those who don't know, appeared in the 1980 version of Pengabdi Setan making this movie a remake, though some suggest it is also a prequel given that the 2017 setting was 1981 while the 1980 setting was 1982. Regardless, the seductive ending scene set against Diwajahmu Kulihat Bulan by Sam Saimun also set the mood for the sequel which we will see soon this year in 2022.

母親が病死してから次々と怪現象に襲われる貧しい一家‼️実は他界した母親にはある秘密の過去が・・・

意識的に80年代ホラー的カメラワーク演出を多用しつつ、構図が美しくテンポ感も良く、チープな題材なのにほどほどに重厚さと味わいを備えた、インドネシア産ホラー映画のヒット作🧟‍♂️

呪いとか幽霊のような古典的な題材とホラー映画の型はまった作品のようですがそこは意識的で、ビックリ演出、カメラのパンやズームの使い方など、昔のホラー映画っぽい演出を意図的に味付けとして活用することで良い味を出しています‼️

固定カメラと手ブレを活かした手持ち撮影の使い分けも良い感じ👌

最後のオチは面白いですが、少し分かりにくい💧あと一部唐突な展開が気になるところはあります💨脚本、もうちょっとだけブラッシュアップできたら傑作になり得た気がします👍

イスラム教徒としての信仰心を試してくるような展開があり面白かったですし、インドネシア文化を垣間見ることができます🤔

ちなみにこの映画は、知る人ぞ知るインドネシアのホラー映画『夜霧のジョギジョギモンスター』（1982年）のリメイク版です‼️

ひどすぎる邦題😅

悍ましい内容な上、終盤に死者が蘇るシーンがあり（ポチョンと呼ばれるインドネシア版ゾンビ）、一部のコアなゾンビ映画ファンには知られてる珍作です👌

I watched Indonesian horror film Pengabdi Setan (Satan's Slaves) today. I kept seeing the sequel advertised on Shudder so I decided to watch the first one. It's apparently a remake, so I'm gonna have to check out the original.

I already love gothic horror, so I was primed to be into this. And it's always neat to see gothic horror from another culture's perspective. It's about this family of four siblings whose mother died after a long unspecified illness. Spooky stuff starts to happen around them and they begin to suspect their mom may have had a dark secret.

I liked the characters in this a lot. The kids, Bondi and Ian were terrible. Rini is great as the protective eldest sibling trying to hold everything together. Tony is this adorable sweetie who obviously worries about his family but tries to hide it behind this affable teenage boy facade.

Also the dad was hot.

There were a couple things I didn't love about it. One is the infertility trope that I hate in horror. You know, the whole "this woman wasn't supposed to have a baby, so she resorted to supernatural means to get one and bad things happened." It's closely related to "this woman wasn't supposed to have a baby, so she resorted to scientific means to have one and now the baby is evil or doesn't have a soul or something." It bugs me because I was one of those women and, let me tell you, if Satan had showed up and offered me a deal I would have taken it on the spot. But moreso it bugs me because if the only people who should have children are the people God/the Universe/whatever has designated, then it doesn't really seem like God is doing a great job with that. There are a lot of really terrible/abusive/fucking murderous parents out there. But I guess that's fine, because they were able to have babies without medical intervention, the way God intended.

Anyway, hopping off my soap box. The only other thing I didn't like about it was the end. I felt like it kind of lost the plot a little bit. Although that may just be me, it's easy to miss stuff in foreign language films if I'm not paying 100% attention. BUT (spoiler) the zombies were amazing so I can't complain a whole lot. This had some really tense moments, and I'm for sure going to watch the sequel when I get a chance.

SETELAH NONTON GUA GARASA PUAS ATO NGOMONG WAH ANJIR GOKIL TP JUJUR GUA BERJALAN MENINGGALKAN BIOSKOP SAMBIL BINGUNG HAH INI MAKSUD CERITANYA GMN SIH????????

soal sinematografinya sih gua akuin bagus bgt emg kaga ada lawan dah sumpah beneran perfect bgt no kaleng2, music scoringnya oke bgt berhasil ngebangun suasananya, horror dll tp emg kenceng bgt dan di beberapa scene suaranya emg terlalu berisik gt agak menganggu kuping

trus seperti kata kebanyakan org jumpscare emg banyak bgt, beruntun dan bertubi-tubi mulai dari tengah ampe abis dan mungkin karna kebanyakan jumpscare gua jd udah siapin mental kali ye dan nebak nebak scene, alhasil jadilah jumpscare yg tidak jumpscare (karna keseringan)

dari pandangan gua pribadi, gua mau ngebantah kata2 bbrp org yg bilang kalo nntn ini berasa kyk rollercoaster sepanjang film. GUA BERHARAP JUGA BEGITU :( tapi malah pas nonton gua boseeeen gatau knp dari awal ampe tengah biasa aja gitu, banyak bgt dialog2nya dan malah ngantuk cok jdnya,

justru mulai cukup seru dan thrilling pas di rusun yg kecelakaan lift ini wah itu seru si beneran salah satu scene yg gua suka dan sisanya yaaa itu jumpscare sana sini

hal baik lain selain sinematografinya adalah latar tempatnya dan setting suasannya yang WAH WAH WAH sukses bgt sumpah angkernya dapet, usangnya dapet, ngerinya dapet, BENERAN BIKIN NGERI DAH KACO beneran tergambar kalo ni rusun emg angker, terbelakang dan gakeurus sama skali ditambah lg dengan penghuni2nya yg emg aneh (karna mereka kan pengabdi setan ya) dan suasana horrornya emg beneran berhasil bgt dah anjir mana sepanjang film kan mati lampu dan ujan gede otomatis nyaho dah tu lu kaga bs liat apa2an kecuali pake senter ato korek jd YA AGAK TEBAK2AN GT YA BUN KEMUNCULAN SETANNYA

cuma jujur setelah nonton yg gua dapet, yg paling ninggalin impresi atau LETS SAY YG MEMORABLE BUAT GUA adalah gua nontonin orang2 yg tinggal di rusun terbelakang yg berhantu nan angker di mana suatu hari ada kecelakaan lift yg makan byk jiwa + kena bencana banjir + listrik mati trus mereka dikejar setan utk dibunuh dan mereka berhasil cabut kabur karna ada 1 org yg nyelametin.

nah itu. tapi untuk gmn hubungan kejadian di film dgn persekutuan orgtuanya bondi toni rini ian ama setan gua msh ngangnong ngang ngong kaga paham samsek dan justru hal itu ga jadi highlight di film pengabdi setan 2 ini. ceritanya juga gantung jd ya kemungkinan bakal ada lagi sequelnya. oiya satu lg tambahan, di film beberapa kali muncul orang atau ada scene gt yg gadijelasin dan bikin bertanya-tanya mungkin bs jd clue buat sequelnya nanti

but anyway, utk mengapresiasiii guaa mau mention lg scene fav gua adalah pas adegan mau kecelakaan lift yg puncaknya ada anak kecil kecipratan darah sebadan-badan karna temen2nya pd ketiban lift yg jatoh ITU SATU, JUJUR BERASA BGT DEG2AN PANIKNYA MANA MUSIKNYA MENDUKUNG BGT ANJIR JANTUNG GUA DAG DIGDUG KAGA KARUAN GEMES BGT LIAT ORG2 PD REBUTAN MAU KELUAR DARI LIFT.

despiteee segala bacotan gua ttg nano nano pengabdi setan 2, ni film tu gambling bgt dah bisa dibilang bagus dan gabagus jg at some parts. tergantung liatnya dari segi mananya aja si. cuma ya kalo mau liat dari segi cerita, jujur gua lebih suka yg pertama hehehe aku kasih 7/10 ajaa yaah!!! TERUNTUK JOKAN, THX UTK SUGUHANNYA, NEXT BIKIN YG JAUH LEBIH KEREN LAGI YAH!!!

Honorable Mention: Satan’s Slave (Pengabdi Setan, 2017)

The difficult part of living with someone that has a terminal illness is the risk of the ailment eating away the personhood of the individual in the eyes of their loved ones, slowly eroding away the joy spending time with them to the point one might transform the expected grief into relief once things are over. Except when that's not the end of it. Have this conundrum as the starting point of a horror story that explores what family means, throw the demonic into the mix, and you have plenty of potential in your hands.

A passion project for Joko Anwar (who watched the original as a kid and was obsessed ever since), this take on the story gives a much needed emotional backbone and causal connection to the horror proceedings and it's human characters. Its strengths lie not just in the close to 40 years of technological advancements or a likely higher budget, but in the way it builds a much more believable cast to throw into the fry. Same goes for the conflict, which for the most part keeps the central threat while still giving a more nuanced approach that doesn't feel condescendingly preachy.

That isn't to say the technical aspects here aren't stellar: while the make up and effects in the original could hit the mark or completely whiff, here it's all consistently strong, giving the evil spirits such a delightfully creepy look. Special mention, however, has to go to the audio. Some of it falls into known territory for sure, but between it's use of rhythms, recurrent sounds, the subtlest of distortions or even the interplay of what's diegetic and what isn't (let alone the silence in some places where you would expect noise), the film has quite the creative ways to catch you off guard.

While it doesn't necessarily assume you have watched the original, some plot points will hit harder with this knowledge in hand. It does deflate quite a bit in the climax, but it's got so much to offer regardless.
