Penske Perfect and Details Matter are two phrases often used in conjunction with the Penske organization. And when they can be used to dunk on Ferrucci, all the better.

Josef is a perfectionist. This is a combo of his highly competitive nature - which has been said about him from a young age - and the Penske Perfect motto which he has taken to heart. He is highly critical of himself - getting very down on himself if he makes a mistake and taking the blame for things not wholly under his control. But he tried to maintain a genial if slightly arrogant image in public. He slips sometimes - there have been a few angry Twitter interactions that he later apologized for and on occasion after a race, his temper will get the better of him and he'll say things he probably shouldn't.

He can be goofy as hell as seen on Bus Bros. Scott McLaughlin has brought this out of him since becoming teammates. Josef has said that Scott makes him feel more comfortable being his real self.

I would be remiss if I did not point out Josef's thighs. He is a specimen in general but those thighs should get special attention.

Josef did it.

He fucking did it.

Scott is screaming in his car as he sees him cross the finish line, watches the crowd erupt as the yellow, white, and red car flashes across the line.

(When they watch it back later, Josef taking notes and overanalyzing missed chances, earlier moves, Scott hears Leigh say "The drought is over" and that's exactly what it feels like in that moment on the track. It's over. He did it.)

When Scott crosses the line (14th, it makes him wince when he sees it afterward), Josef is nowhere to be seen, somewhere off in the crowd.

(He's been planning this. He and Scott have spent many late nights figuring out how he could do it.)

People with cameras force him back over the fence, and Josef finally stops, taking it all in.

He so rarely stops moving. Scott wants to hit pause on this moment, let them both sit in it before Josef ultimately moves past it (he always does), says it wasn't enough, there's a championship to win, etc.

But it can't last, the cameras press in, waiting for a soundbite, the perfect photo.

Scott sees his chance, slips past the waiting media, and practically jumps into Josef's arms. Josef's still got his helmet on and Scott wonders what would have happened if he hadn't (he would have kissed him, he's pretty sure).

Instead, he tries to convey how excited he is for Josef through his helmet, layers of fireproof material between them.

Josef hugs him back just as tightly, yells something that's muffled by the press of the crowd around them. (Scott forgets to ask him later about what he said and well... it's too late now, isn't it?)

Scott pulls away, lets himself fade into the crowd. He knows there's plenty of time before he'll see Josef again, so he takes his time to shower, decompress, and head back to their bus.

When he does see Josef again, it's like the adrenaline from earlier floods back into his system. Josef has his firesuit half-zipped, shoved down around his waist, white fireproof top stretched tight across his chest. His hair has been messed with, tamped down into something appropriate enough for photos. Scott itches to run his hands through it (but he's always been eager to mess up Josef's 'Penske Perfect' look). He looks exhausted but happy, the post-glow win still present on his skin.

This time, Scott makes his chance count, crowds Josef against the door to the bus and slots their mouths together. Josef tastes like champagne and victory and something so Josef. He cups Scott's face, licks into his mouth and Scott can practically feel the adrenaline thrumming through Josef's veins. Their bodies press against each other, first frantic and then slow, the full weight of the day settling on both of their shoulders. Josef's hands shake where they're pressed against Scott's skin. He tastes salt, realizes Josef is crying.

"Hey," Scott pulls back, lifts a hand to wipe the falling tears.

"Fuck, sorry." Josef shakes his head, takes a deep breath.

Scott smiles at him, "No apologies necessary, mate. You won the fucking 500!"

Josef beams at him then, a tired, beautiful smile, and Scott thinks that maybe this win will actually be enough to save them.

(It's not.)

Turning my notifications for Instagram off I press the button on the side of the phone and lock it before setting it down next to me. Grabbing the last box remaining in the living room I drag it closer to me and open it up. It was a late move in present from my dad and step-mom. Inside it was filled with various manga that I had been eyeing for awhile, a photo album that I would definitely be looking through later, my beloved nascar blanket that I had forgotten in the move, an assortment of fuzzy socks, and a replica of my Red Bull car. Grabbing the box containing the replica car, I gently open the box and take the car out. Dad and I had this tradition that started after seeing Addie’s collection of her cars. Every year she would have a replica mini car made to display in her living room. When I got into Indy Car dad surprised me with my own miniature replica car and since then we’ve kept the tradition going. Walking over to the shelves filled with trophies, various helmets from the past, and lastly the 5 Indy car miniatures I put the mini Red Bull next to the 2022 Penske. Picking up my phone to see if Addie or Luce text back to my earlier text about when a good time to record the next episode of Don’t tell the Grid was for them I am surprised to see instead of a response from either and a dm request from someone on Instagram. Thinking it was probably a random fan or person I didn’t think much of it and was ready to delete the request when I saw that it was from Lando.

Lando: hey, super weird to message you this way but I don’t have your number and thought it would be weirder if I got it from Max 😅
