Afro-Dominican model @noigjaquii shares her experience being an #afrolatina model/actress in a recent sitdown talk on the topic Latinidad. The Bronx native disclose casting calls for ethnic models can go as far as to request for specific skin tone and/or stereotype behavior. "They don't see the 'fiery' aspect of me being Latina because I am very calm. People have these ideas base on what they see--not everyone is like that...We're human. We have different roles. #Repost @peraltaprjct (@get_repost) ・・・ I was born and raised in New York City, so naturally I learned U.S. American history before I learned about Dominican History. I’m sill learning. I learned early on that the island of Kiskeya (the Taino name) for the Hispaniola (DR and Haiti) was where the New World began. Hispaniola served as the mouth of the Americas. When Christopher Columbus dique discovered America, he actually landed in the Kiskeya. African slaves where bought to the island in the 1500’s, 100 years before they where brought to North America. About 95% of Dominicans are of African descendent. The problem is that for years the image of Latinos have been light skinned Latinas like JLO or Sophia Vergara or the Latin Lover like Ricky Martin. Feeding you an anglicized image of Latinos and not showing the full spectrum. But that is about to stop. So many of us Afro-Latinos are tired of this narrative and it gets exhausting having to constantly fight for our representation. I leave you with these amazing images of life in the Dominican Republic. Not sure of the year. I saw these at Centro Leon in Santiago.
