Week 10 - Consultation Time!
We had a consultation with Sir Carl at the LRC office on the 2nd floor since he wasn't available in the CPE office. During the session, we discussed most of our diagrams, including the DFD, Data Dictionary, Data Normalization, and Use Case Diagram.
We also went over certain sections of our research paper, particularly the synthesis part.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was quite a lengthy consultation.
I thought it would took about half an hour but it nearly took an hour. During the consultation, sir Carl taught us how to improve each parts that we consulted. He also gave out our scores in our quiz 2 weeks ago. I would say my score was just so-so. I was not disappointed but also not happy since i could have done better if I studied earlier.
All in all, I would say it was a productive consultation that gave us valuable insights!

KALUSUGAN NG KAISIPAN
Tumblr media

DURING COVID-19
Here are the Healthy Practices my family observe during pandemic:
STAY AT HOME:
Don’t go out if its unnecessary when you don’t have important to do outside just don’t but if you do have important thing to do or buy something essentially you must follow safety protocols before going out.
WEAR MASK BEFORE GOING OUT:
Wearing a mask help us somehow avoid getting infected by the virus. Mask filters and trapped the virus and germs we encountered everyday so make sure to dispose your mask properly.
SANITIZE BEFORE AND AFTER ENTERING:
Sanitize to kill the bacteria or virus we carry from the inside/outside. It helps not to carry those bacteria and virus inside/outside of any facility or location.
WASH YOUR HANDS REGOLARLY:
Wash your hands properly with water and soap for 20 seconds equivalent to “happy birthday” song. Because we often hold, cough, and sneeze on our hands.
Tumblr media
This are the Coping ways during this health crisis:
MAINTAIN YOUR BODYCLOCK:
Being tired after a long night will probably make yourself lack of energy and gloomy so sleep at right time.
CALL/TEXT YOUR LOVEONES:
Ask them if their okay, did they eat and how their day. Make some funny conversation to get away with your sadness sometime. Simple greetings and checking up is worth it.
EXERCISE
Exercise inside your house for example doing chores its an exercise doing physical things and making your muscle work is a simple exercise just don’t forget to warm up before doing heavy stuff.
DURING THE PANDEMIC I LEARNED THAT:
-We should always watch and be updated in news about the cases of the COVID-19.
-Don’t be negative that there’s no end to this but look for the brighter side.
-Be aware and monitor you health daily.
-Don’t forget that you have friends and family to make you feel okay.
-Maintain your health.

“The significance print, broadcast and new media”
Before we proceed of the significance of print, broadcast, and new media, we must first explain and define what is which. First of all, what's a print out of paper? Print media such as newspapers, magazines, newsletters, brochures, ads, banners, direct mail, and other printed publications. It has become a popular medium for advertisement with a large coverage in print media. Print media is available to and circulated in many languages for a large audience. Second, what's on the radio? Broadcast media describes traditional television and radio programming types. The term 'broadcast media' technically encompasses the internet as well as things such as Bluetooth networking and other forms of location-based broadcasts. Third, what's with the modern media? New Media is a catch-all term used by websites, streaming video / audio outlets, newsletters, online networking networks, community communities, web forums, journals, Wireless telephony, and many others for different forms of electronic communication that are possible with the advent of modern technologies.
Now that we have defined and explained print, broadcast, and new media, we must know the main goal of these three together and how now we can acquire information. In today's world, print, broadcast, and new media perform very significant roles. They provide us with information that ranges from the latest news releases to the latest goods on the market. Print newspapers, electronic media, and new media provide us with information that we would otherwise not have access to. We can now collect knowledge using it in several ways, provided that we now have handheld device devices, essentially technology and the internet. Getting all three co-workers together is a stunning print media method newspaper for people who want to read the latest story, sports, lifestyle, movies, and so on. Now with the broadcasting media, people can hear them wherever they're going; they can listen to music, news, love stories, commercials, and more. New media is now what we typically use, we use our; phone, lop tops, any devices to get new information. I want to quote Barak Obama, "The internet isn't a privilege, it's a requirement," and that's all thank you for that.

Responsible for the Media
Technology has brought upon many changes in our daily lives that have shaped who we are right now and our own capabilities as individuals. Media and information literacy is being able to assess and create media critically. the ability to know or explore the digital world. Being a media and information literate individual means carrying a lot of information, which requires certain skills that can help you achieve your goal of knowing the functions of all aspects of media.
If a person knows everything that revolves around media and information, they are held responsible for their own actions because they are tasked with empowering people by making them aware of new information that is currently surfacing on the internet. It requires an individual to critically assess the information that he or she is going to share, which is why being literate in this field is crucial in many aspects, including disseminating fake news. So that information should be based on facts. Being able to share valuable information with a lot of people is fulfilling, so they need to be aware of what is true or not because it can have a huge impact on an individual. An example is when a certain person learns a fake remedy for their health problems, but it turns out to be damaging to their own health. It can leave a certain impression on an individual, so it would be better to critically assess information by avoiding misleading information. Having proper behavior as a literate individual can also help people by providing accurate feedback.
To put it all together, we need to critically process the information that is given to us to uphold integrity and to know whether the information is accurate. It can benefit a lot of people when it comes to gaining information on the internet. People will learn the importance of being held responsible for processing information because it can have a huge impact on the audience. As a result of helping or providing accurate information to people, the importance of being a media and information literate individual is justified. Lastly, we need to improve individuals to become a better part of the digital community.

Light and Shadow of Religions in the Philippines Context
The Philippines is a country where Religion is considered important for each of the lives of the people who live there. There are about 80% Roman Catholic people who live in the Philippines while the rest are either Christians, Muslims, Protestants, or other existing religions existing here in the Philippines. We nationally celebrate events that have relation to our Religion and even do have some festivals that we do every year as a celebration dedicated for the saints, Catholics they have the Feast of the Black Nazarene, and for the Muslims, they have Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. So how does Religion helps us connect with each other and understand each other even though we are from different countries around the world and also how do we connect with each other even though we have different beliefs?
Religion is a big part of our life since each one has something they believe in and they have faith in so knowing they are also some people who have the same beliefs as you are is something that can be comforting. Religion also creates unity in the world even though we live in different places Religion can bring us together. Our every religion also helps us to become better person who’s willing to help each other in times of crisis. We often asked people around who have the same beliefs as us about certain about their opinions on current issues and we include their opinions on what our own decision or opinion will be about. That’s why religion is also a big player when it comes to our own society because we do trust the people who have the same beliefs as us.
This is why Religion is a very important thing in our life we decided things based on what our beliefs are. You can say that each religion connects us people around the world. Since the Philippines is a country where almost all people have something they believe in, this why we are all somehow connected to each other.

“Understanding the Relevance of Information Literacy in the Midst of Social Era”
Having the knowledge of information literacy helps the present generation to widen their understanding and evaluate themselves between false information and legitimate kinds of information. In this era where technology creates a buzz in a single tap, the spreading of information might build up misleading contents and causes more problems in the society. This is actually happening these days and once we let ourselves be involved with the convenient way of providing and gaining information, through the internet, we can sort various types of information that we can use in organizing and creating new knowledge within ourselves.
We have all come to understand the value of knowledge literacy in our social age, or what it is. "The digital revolution, such as the digital transition or other global transformations, has changed our information environment, according to M.M Naik (2014)," The modern database systems have greatly influenced the innovation of computer literacy in which libraries and librarians play a truly important role. Information is our gateway to modern understanding in the midst of our current age, but how our technology progresses as well. We still have the negative side if we have the positive side heard, and they suggest evidence is a valuable weapon for humans, but if the data is misused and incorrectly concluded, it will lead to confusion, assumptions, and ultimately chaos.

The Unknown Planet
Elena looks around. It’s dark and the sky has a black color without any stars. She thinks about his boyfriend. “There is no chance that he died! I know him for twelve years and he is strong enough. I will see him again. I’m sure about that. She hears nothing but the silence. Never before has she heard absolutely nothing. And suddenly she realises that she is alone. There are no creatures on this planet. Everything is destroyed. A teardrop rolls over her pale face. And she takes the first step on this unknown planet.
___
Elena started walking again and starts to recite the names of the people that were on the ship she crashed. It was a way of reminding herself that no matter how heavy her duffel bag was, the weight of 100 deaths will always be the one tiring her back. She doesn't mind, though. The burden of it all keeps her sane, makes her feel something. For her, the agonizing pain of remembering is better than the hollowness she forces not to consume her.
She didn't notice that her foot was bleeding until she felt it dampen.
"Ugh, These rocks will amputate my legs one of these days." She sighed in frustration.
She sits down, opens her duffel bag, and starts looking for scraps of cloth. She finds a Ninja Turtle patterned one. She was sure it was Jan's since he was the only kid beside his twin that was on the ship. She stared at it for a while, feeling the soft cotton against her skin. The piece of clothing a boy with a future she robbed, once wore. A memory suddenly resurfaced. It was her boyfriend folding this particular shirt. She was snapped out of her trance when she felt the stinging of her foot. She wrapped the piece of clothing around her ankle, and then on the heel of her foot, then finished the makeshift band-aid with a knot on the back.
"There you go. Wasn't so bad, was it?" She smiled, patting her foot with a sense of pride.
She stands straight again and was looking at her injured foot. She tells herself that she deserves it. Even contemplating on removing the cloth and just letting the wound get infected so she could die and all of this would end already. She didn't, of course. She continued walking, making sure she didn't step on the pointy rocks that filled up this planet.
"Nicolas. Nicolas. Nicolas. Nicolas" She repeatedly whispers her boyfriend's name to herself, as if it was a prayer. She thinks about his unkempt curls, his golden rimmed glasses he wears when it's only the two of them. She thinks about the small scar at the edge of his mouth that sometimes looked like the extension of his lips. She thinks about how tall he was, how he paints his right pinky nail whatever color Elena's polish was that week. She thinks about his woody scent. She deeply inhales, holding her breathe for a while as if the perfume of her boyfriend will go through her nose. She exhales. Disappointment spreads through her chest. What did she even expect?
"That was stupid." She laughs at her foolishness. She laughs at herself for hoping, for walking when she doesn't even know where she's going. She laughs at the rocks, at her duffel bag, at the gray sky, at the absurdity of it all. She laughs until she was crouching down, arms wrapped around her stomach, eyes tearing up.
"What am I even doing!" She shouts, her fit of laughter dying down. And then for the first time since the crash, she cries. She cries so hard that she started to hiccup. Everything's a mess. The pain was shooting at her heart like daggers. It was the type of pain where her chest started to physically hurt.
She was lying down on her side, hands under her head when the tears finally stopped. She was exhausted. The last time she cried like that was when she was 9. All her vegetables in her mini garden were gone. She didn't get out of her bed for days because of how devastated she was. Her mom baked her cookies that day and knitted her a green blanket. She remembered how warm it was and how her mom made that for her in honor of her stolen vegetables. She thought it was silly back then, but right now, she only wishes to be wrapped around that same blanket. She wraps her arms around herself and puts her duffel bag under her head as a pillow, her lids started getting heavy then she finally allowed herself to drift off to sleep.
Sleeping isn't easy for Elena. The event usually replays in her dreams.
"Ship ADAMS, Flight 132, preparing for landing" Elena spoke into her mic.
Ship ADAMS carried the whole civilization of Planet HINAS. They were moving back to Earth after 100 years of reconstruction. Elena has never been on Earth, she only heard stories about it. How mankind slowly ate it up. That if Earth was a human, the people living on it were Cancer tumors. She's been dreaming of landing this ship on Earth since the first time of her hearing about the mission. She promised to herself that she will be the one giving the people a new home, a new life, a chance to start over. She knew that her being the pilot of the ship and her lover being her co-pilot will be written in the history books. 'Lovers Landing" She always imagined.
Nicolas looked at Elena, eyes full of fond, "History, huh?" He smirks
"History." She glanced at him and smiled at him softly.
She shifted the ship's gear when she saw Earth. She was finishing up pressing the buttons to land when somebody speaks through her headphones.
"THIS IS  PLANET KITA TELECOMS, CAPTAIN ELENA JONES FROM PLANET HINAS, YOU ARE LANDING ON THE WRONG PLANET. PLEASE RETREAT. I REPEAT, PLEASE RETREAT" The man on the other side of the line was urgently shouting.
"What" She widened her eyes and glanced at Nicolas.
"El, what's wrong" Worry evident in his voice
"I-I don't know" She was starting to panic. The ship was almost at the surface. She was pressing the emergency button but nothing was happening.
"Talk to me okay, what's wrong?" Nicolas was soothing her.
"I'm sorry" She whispers.
The last thing she saw was a flash of light.
"Elena, wake up" Somebody's shaking her body. A familiar voice traveled through her ears.
She sits up and opens her eyes almost instantly.
"Nicolas?" She exclaims. She couldn't believe that her lover's alive.
"Hey" He whispers and caresses her face. She holds his hand that was on her face and closes her eyes. Relishing the feeling of her boyfriend's hand.
"You're here." She looks at his big hazel eyes. "I'm here" He reassures her.
"As much as I'd want to smother you with kisses, we need to go" He stands up from his squatting position and pulls Elena up so she could stand.
"Where are we going?" She asks, slinging her duffel bag on her shoulder. Nicolas noticed this, took the bag from her shoulder, and carried it. He looked down and saw her bare feet littering with wounds. He turned his back and crouched a bit, signaling Elena to hop on his back so he could carry her. She complied and she wrapped her arms around his neck and Nicolas's arms were under her thighs.
He walked in silence, Elena on his back. Nicolas didn't bother answering her question and she was too tired to ask more.
An hour has gone by. Elena noticed that Nicolas stopped. She then lifted her head to see where they were. Her jaw dropped. There were tents, a campfire, there was running water, and most importantly, there were people, the same faces that were on the ship. The faces that owned the names she has been reciting. She was in shock. It's over. She can finally breathe again.
"History, huh?" Nicolas stares at the small civilization.
"History." Elena's smile was so wide that it reached her ears.
She hopped off Nicolas's back and for the first time in months, she was eager for the steps she was walking on this unknown planet.

A Critique on George Monbiot’s Article on: Aspirational Parents Condemn Their Children to A Desperate, Joyless Life
George Monbiot’s article talks about how children in the modern world face the pressures of complying with qualifications and acquiring skills as early as their toddler years. Parents often push their children to attend academic enrichment classes, ballet classes, sports training, or musical lessons. While this develops talents at a young age and benefits both the parents and the child, the effects resulting from the process may be disastrous for the young child. First, the author opens up about the decline in life conditions which ultimately pressures the young generation to be better than average to be able to live decently. Monbiot moves on to explain that society perpetuates into each and everyone’s minds that one must strive to be an elite. Society influences individuals to aspire to become part of the elite community. According to society, true success is to become one of them. This also puts a heavy burden since becoming part of the elite is truly no menial task to be done. Parents try to ensure their children’s success by letting them start as early as possible in life which brings the author to his next point. According to Monbiot, childhood must be a time for innocence and play. However the trend nowadays is to let children start working hard early. It is as if there is no more time for play in their childhoods. This in turn affects the mental health of the youth. Many have become more depressed and prone to anxiety. George Monbiot ties his entire piece of text together by saying that perhaps by being hardworking all throughout childhood would ensure an elite lifestyle, but at what cost exactly? Childhood has become an exhausting and life-denying era instead of the once happy and best years in a person’s life.
The author aims to persuade readers, especially the parents of millennials and even millennials themselves, that chasing aspirations of becoming elite at the cost of one’s childhood is not worth it. George Monbiot is a British writer known for being an activist in both politics and environmental issues. He voices out every week in a column for The Guardian. He took jobs at the BBC in the past, working in current affairs or as an investigative journalist where he encountered many unfortunate complications in obtaining a story. Among his best-known works are his description of an encounter with a police torturer in Brazil entitled Hunting the Beast and a book published in 2000 entitled Captive State: The Corporate Takeover of Britain.
The text shows information that proves his point, mostly utilizing logos and pathos in his claims. To support the idea that there is a decline in children’s mental health over the years, statistical data is introduced. It was shown that the number of children admitted to the hospital because of self-harm has risen by 68% in 10 years. Many other statistical data were shown as well. The many reliable statistical data really backed up Monbiot’s point about the sad reality of the mental health of children. In fact there was at least three of more statistical data mentioned. It gave hard evidence and proof which makes it difficult for naysayers to disagree upon. Furthermore, pathos was also used but not as much as logos. The author states lines such as “But to what are we aspiring? A life that is better than our own, or worse?” and “From infancy to employment, this is a life-denying, love-denying mindset.” Both of these lines are not only rhetorical questions but also an appeal to the readers’ emotions. It sounded so sad to me when I read the latter. Life-denying and love-denying mindset just sounds so miserable. It clearly worked because I was convinced that this phenomenon is not good for the society. The author did not make use of ethos since he did mention anything regarding his credibility in the text itself.
The claims made by the author mostly included claims of value. Majority of the article is persuading readers to believe that parents with high aspirations will only yield overly pressured children with no chance of a proper and happy childhood. It is even mentioned in the title itself. The author would want readers to believe that this phenomenon of pressuring the youth is not good. It answers a question of morality. Moreover, the article gives supporting details to his claim. It gave the negative effects of overworking children such as mental health issues, lack of playtime during childhood, and the huge burden of pressures. Upon reading these claims, I did not find many fallacies in the author’s reasoning. However, the author implies that the reason behind parents letting their children work hard at an early age is because their goal is to ensure their children’s chance of becoming successful in life. This is an oversimplification. Parents nowadays do want their children to become more successful in life, however it is not the only reason that they let their children go to enrichment classes or other classes. Parents may simply want their children to learn a skill. Parents may also want their children to develop their innate talents. True, the prime reason is for guarantee of success but it is not the only one.
Monbiot highlights the drastic measures parents are taking in order to guarantee a chance of success. Intertextuality is very evident in this work because Monbiot cites other works in this piece of text. One of these works is an article featured in the Financial Times about a new career called the nursery consultant. The nursery consultant is basically where parents go to ask for advice in choosing a nursery that would be better suited for their child’s development. It is to put their children on the right track. The same article also spoke of parents who let their two-year old daughter go to tutor for maths, literacy, reading, drama, piano, beginner French, and swimming. This article from Financial Times clearly gives examples which support the topic. In the second to the last paragraph, Monbiot also makes use of Izaak Walton’s Compleat Angler (1653) by mentioning a description found in the book. Walton states that the fate of poor-rich men is that they “spend all their time first in getting, and next in anxious care to keep it; men that are condemned to be rich and then always busy or discontented.” This of course applies to the modern problem of everyone aspiring to be one of the richest elites. It even further backs up his point regarding the cost of being rich and if it is worth it in the end. The creative words lifted from the Compleat Angler aids a reader in understanding the main idea of the article even more so.
This article by George Monbiot is a strong and reliable article. Overall, it is a well-written article with strong evidence supporting each and every one of the claims made by the author. There were examples to help the readers visualize the idea. There were also many statistical data mentioned in the text. Moreover, it also mentioned other issues surrounding the topic. There is however one error found in the piece of text which is an oversimplification fallacy regarding the cause of parents pushing their children to work hard in their early stages. The rest of the article gave strong points and strong supporting details with regards to the main idea. Overall, this article is well-written and definitely would persuade a reader. I salute the author for this comprehensive work.
