Edinburgh Castle's dog cemetery.
Looking down to the wee graveyard last week.
Hidden within the grounds of Edinburgh Castle, a dedicated dog cemetery may be the landmark's strangest feature.
There are a huge number of fascinating historical stories hidden within the walls of Edinburgh Castle, but perhaps none so curious and touching as the tale behind the castle’s dog cemetery.
The small green space is thought to have originally been the site of a medieval tower, but since 1840 it has been the final resting place for regimental mascots or honoured dogs belonging to high-ranking soldiers.
The cemetery is referenced in this verse from the Scottish Bard, Robert Burns:
”Berkin dugs here lie at rest ”The yappin worst, obedient best ”Sodgers pets and mascots tae ”Still the guard the castle to this day.
One of only two like it in Scotland, the unique graveyard is home to more than 20 headstones.
Sadly, several of the inscriptions have worn away over the last century or so, probably thanks to Edinburgh’s signature chilly, wet and windy weather.
Of the engravings still visible, the oldest dates back to 1881 - a dedication to Jess, band pet of the Black Watch 42nd Royal Highlanders.
The newest headstone in the cemetery belongs to Winkle, the “dear and faithful friend of Lady Gow and the Governor”, who died in 1980.
Other faithful pups laid to rest here include Yum Yum, Tim and Dobbler, who travelled as far as China, Sri Lanka and South Africa with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
These days, visitors to the castle cannot enter the cemetery, but it can be viewed from above, like I did.

Gabriel all but crash-landed in the Wagamese front yard. Tom and Roland, who were drawn out by the unusual noise, were shocked to find him at their door at that hour, and even more shocked at the awful news he brought. Without a moment's hesitation, the men of the Smithy mobilized and moved out to look for Annika.
Meanwhile, Marcus had flown over to the Gladwyns' to get Phillip. The red-haired boy was mortified when he heard what had happened, instantly jumping on Marcus' broom to join him in the search. Riding shotgun on the shaky ride had nearly cost him his head last time, but his fear of flying paled in comparison to the fear he felt for Annika's safety.
Soon, half of Wyvern's Bay was out on the streets, searching every corner of the city and surrounding area for the lost girl, calling out her name.
Hidden away in a cave deep in the wild woods, Annika couldn't hear them.

JUST though of the silliest AU, that builds off of the idea "Gortash and Durge meet as children aus" people have. Like they meet as children and run away from the city together, end up in the Shadow Cursed lands and get adopted by Ketheric. Hilarity ensues with Bhaalspawn shenanigans and Ketheric not being able to die. I need it to be like Full House, meets the Addam's Family, meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Ancient Egyptians held cats in the highest esteem.
The penalties of injuring a cat were severe and killing a cat led to capital punishment.
They worshipped a cat goddess, half woman and half feline, whom they called Bastet.
When the cat dies, it is the duty of the owners to give them proper burial along with rituals. They shave their head, eyebrows or beard to show their grief.
They even conduct after life rituals for their cat in order to gain blessings from Goddess Bastet.
Cat was embalmed with a sculpted wooden mask and then placed in the family tomb or pet cemetery (premises of Temple of Goddess Bastet) with tiny mummies of mice.
The state maintained the cats in the temple of Goddess Bastet. Head priest of the temple was in charge of maintenance of cats in temple premises.
The state also took charge of burial and rituals of stray cats.
The whole kingdom loved and respected cats. Their owners loved and treated them as their own child throughout Egyptian Civilization.

I am gonna step away from using vulture culture and just stick to taxidermist.
I’m tired of seeing so much fucked up stuff in the community, and I don’t think I can really sit and defend it in the current state it’s in. I’ll keep my resources as is for now and still post in the tags a bit, but I really don’t want to be associated in a space where people are actively promoting illegal/unethical trade of animal parts or animal suffering for the sake of collecting.

Conyngham Hall Pet Cemetery in Knaresborough, England Hidden in the woods behind Conyngham Hall, in the historic market town of Knaresborough, lies a Victorian pet cemetery. Its 24 kennel-shaped graves date from between 1859 to 1932 and bear names such as Buncle, Kelpie, and Nero. Some believe that these are the graves of animals belonging to Knaresborough Zoo, which was once housed on the grounds of Conyngham Hall. But seeing as the zoo didn't open until 1965, this theory doesn't hold much water.  A more likely explanation is that the cemetery was added by Basil T. Woodd, who was Knaresborough's Conservative MP between 1852 and 1874, and resident of the hall when the first graves were added. Alongside Basil's own pets are memorials to the companions of Conyngham's later occupants, with the most modern graves likely belonging to the pets of Sir Harold Mackintosh, the Halifax Toffee Magnate and creator of Quality Street.  https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/conyngham-hall-pet-cemetery
