Mapleshade’s vengeance rewrite/ Dark Forest cat back story (OLD VERSION):

Note: I do not condone Mapleshade’s actions AT ALL. Grief isn’t an excuse to kill people. While I hate cheaters, Appledusk didn’t need to die. I love Mapleshade but I don’t condone her actions.

Mapleshade and Ravenwing were born to Deerdapple and Oatspeckle. She was born during leaf-fall, and maple leaves and raven feather had lined the nest during her kitting. She had other two littermates that were stillborn. She and Raven were spoiled by her parents as a result.

She loved training under Bloomheart and was a model apprentice. She had a fierce rivalry with Frecklepaw. Birchpaw often had to break up the fights. During this time, she met Applepaw and Reedpaw at a gathering. She latched onto Applepaw instantly. She also gained a sister when Deerdapple gave birth to Doekit.

Oakstar made Mapleshade a warrior pretty early, when Frecklewish and Birchface got their names.

The events in Mapleshade’s vengeance occur like normal except more interactions with her mother, Mapleshade and Frecklewish becoming mates, and the rising tension between Mapleshade and Ravenwing. Mapleshade starts to see her kits as tools somewhat to rein in Appledusk.

During her exile, Mapleshade isn’t stupid with crossing the river. The Floodwatchers practice was dying out and she had no idea it was going to flood. Patchkit is the only one to make it. She takes Patchkit to the barn and stays for a while with Myler.

Mapleshade wants revenge and the “calling” of her kits start. She kills Ravenwing for betraying his kin.

What Mapleshade doesn’t know is that Petalkit lived because Doepaw managed to save her against Frecklewish orders. Doepaw begs Ravenwing to help her and he begrudgingly does. Deerdapple and Doepaw take care of Petalkit. Petal trains as a Thunderclan warrior but is constantly harassed for being half-clan.

Mapleshade kills Frecklewish who was Petalpaw’s mentor which causes some cats to blame Petalpaw for the murder. She is banned from gatherings and is a prisoner in her own camp.

Patch after training under Mapleshade goes to Thunderclan and is recognized by Ravenwing and Deerdapple. He is allowed into the clan and has the name Patchshade. He gets close with his sister, Petaldusk and is one of the only cats who talks to her. Patchshade keeps some eyes on Nettlebreeze, knowing that he helped his mother live.

Patch and Petal were in a constant brawls with their half siblings Applefrost and Willownose, shyheart was soft and was kind to them. Patchshade took Deerdapple, Petaldusk, and Doefeather to see Mapleshade. Mapleshade has become an unknown terror in the clans for attacking cats at night. She is mates with Myler. (Maple gets spayed). She was overjoyed to see that her daughter was alive. Deerdapple had a few choice words for Mapleshade, she figured Maple killed Raven and Freckle. Petaldusk had her own two cents for Frecklewish’s death while Doepaw was just happy to see her big sister.

Oakstar needed an heir since both his kits were dead. He took Petaldusk as a rather unwilling mate and had Pinekit. Patchshade and Nettlebreeze got together (more like Patch kinda manipulated Nettlebreeze during his grief over Dawnfeather dying) and had Rookkit through a surrogate (sired by both toms through Starclan’s magic). Rook took the brunt of the insults about Mapleshade while Pine didn’t since he was the leader’s kit.

Mapleshade has died at this point from killing Appledusk and Perchclaw killing her like he did in the book (biting/clawing the back of her neck <- that’s how she died, her throat WAS NOT CLAWED OUT)

Patchshade wanted to help Petaldusk since he was furious at Oakstar and it gave the chance for Doefeather to become leader since Pinekit was too young and sickly. Patchshade had killed Bloomheart for his “betrayal” of Mapleshade. Patchshade felt powerful so he and Petal came up with the plan to kill Oakstar.

They settled on using deathberries since full on attack wouldn’t work. Patchshade would sneak them away from Cloudberry or find them himself. Oakstar kept both cats on a tight leash mostly Petaldusk and had her eat most if not all of her meals with him. Petaldusk took the time to plant the deathberries. She would avoid the seeds and kept yarrow around if needed. Oakstar slowly lost the rest of his lives and since Pine was too young, Doefeather became Doestar.

Petaldusk died from greencough and Patchshade died fighting against Applefrost. Both earned their spot in the dark forest along with their mother. They were there to give Pinestar a life.

Petaldusk, Larchkit, and Patchshade were reincarnated as Stonestorm, Mistyfoot, and Mossthorn. Bluestar is very aware of this fact as is Mapleshade.

Goosefeather became aware of his lineage to Mapleshade when he talked with Rooktail.

Patchshade is Mistyfoot. They started saying “Mapleshade is the best mom ever” Both Stormjaw and Bluemoon knew who she was talking about.

Larchkit is Mossthorn. Moss had a fear of water for the longest time say “they didn’t want to drown like last time”. It freaked everyone but Bluemoon out.

Petaldusk is Stonestorm. Was very uncomfortable around Tiger for a while but stopped during his last apprenticeship but never let his guard down.

The cats can/could talk with their past lives. Reincarnations have a mark from where their past life died. Only Mistyfoot has a mark since Patch’s death was the only physical one while Stonestorm and Mossthorn had/have cough issues.

Petalstar is guarded and quite rough around the edges. She can be very aggressive and fierce at times. While she cares immensely for her clan, she still struggles to open up to even her closest confidant. After the lose of their well-respected medicine cat, she has once again closed herself off from her clan, often leaving many angry. This isn't the best quality in a leader, but she makes up for her lack of social skills with her loyalty and passion for Rainclan. Her snippy mouth leads many to be wary of her, which she doesn't mind.

backstory

Petalstar was first named Shellkit when first born to Nightmask and Shell, a kittypet-turned-loner. Rainclan deeply values bloodlines, and absolutely mistrusts kittypets and loners. Because of this, Shellkit was originally a loner. But Nightmask could not part with her clan for long, and eventually grew homesick. Her and Shell had many heated arguments before Nightmask took Shellkit back home to Rainclan to disapproving clanmates. Galestar took pity on his daughter, and allowed Shellkit and Nightmask to remain living in the clan, as long as Shellkit's name was changed. Nightmask renamed her to Petalkit, after her late mother. But Nightmask began to resent Petalkit, for in her mind, her kit represented a heated affair with the tom that ruined her life, and she took it out on Petalkit.

relationships

Nightmask - Petalstar hates her mother, and still remembers the verbal abuse she suffered from her resentful mother. When Nightmask died from sickness, the young warrior, Petaldusk, didn't attend the burial.

Shell - Petalstar barely remembers her father. What she does remember is shouting and yelling. She wonders where he is now, and if he even misses his daughter.

Galestar - Petalstar's grandfather. Her most trusted companion. When days were tough with her mom or with her warrior training she would reach out to her grandfather for comfort. When Galestar appointed her as his deputy, she cried tears of joy for the first time in her life.

Bramblingheart - Petalstar's only apprentice. She's quite fond of the skilled warrior, and is very pleased her mentoring resulted in a fine fighter and hunter. Bramblingheart soon became one of Petalstar's most trusted friends.

Au where Mapleshade dies instead of her kits

Well, given how Frecklewish ignored them drowning in canon and Appledusk's/Riverclan's reaction to Mapleshade showing up in camp, I dunno how well received the kits would be.

So there's a few interesting ways I would see this going, first is the kits are welcomed in Riverclan but grow up feeling resentful of the clan and their father (cause even if they didn't remember Mapleshade, I doubt Appledusk would let them forget). I could see Patchkit getting the worst of it for looking like Mapleshade and Petalkit being the most, uh, bothered by her own resemblance to her father. Larchkit isn't too bothered by the clan but still feels out of place, like he would've been better off in Thunderclan (although he probably wouldn't be tbh). For the most part they're just warriors that belong to Riverclan rather than Riverclan warriors, I don't think they would live very happy lives but they'd be alive and well for the most part. (Given mommy dearest doesn't visit them on a nightly basis, but I think Mapleshade would just be happy they're alive)

Another way is that they're adopted by either Windclan or Shadowclan after being rejected by both Riverclan and Thunderclan. I'd like to think Shadowclan would happily take them in (but that's just based on my own 'Shadowclan doesn't care about what your blood is so long as you pull your own weight') but the idea of Windclan also snatching up 3 future powerhouses is really funny. I think they'd be happy in either but Patch and Petal would probably thrive more in Windclan while Larch would be very happy in shadowclan for just like,,,Thunderclan adjacent ness. This is one where I could see Mapleshade, while not having killed anyone and therefore probably not in the dark forest, is more involved in their dreams and wanting them to avenge her as they're not becoming great Riverclan warriors while their half siblings are. After a while I could see her giving up tho, as they are still becoming warriors and due to her dream visits are at least aware of what happened to her and are very hostile towards thunder and river.

Another is that they're adopted by that barn cat Mapleshade ran a few times into during her novella. Myler raises them to be good and kind cats and while he doesn't know what happened to their mother or what the clans are, nor can he quite explain their strange dreams they keep happening, he's a good dad. This one would probably be where Mapleshade is the most like her canon self and wants them to go back to clans and kill all the cats responsible for her banishment and following death. They ignore her for the most part but I could see one of them getting curious over time and straying too close to a border.

And some warrior names for them depending on where they end up!

For Riverclan they're named Patchshade, Petaldusk & Larchtail.

For Windclan they're named Patchcloud, Petalbreeze & Larchflight.

For Shadowclan they're named Patchshine, Petalbrook & Larchswoop.

And for the barn they just go by Patch, Petal and Larch but the twolegs call them Britches (Patch, cause he's got pants in my design), Lofty (Petal, named after a hayloft) & Chip (Larch, cause he's a warm chocolate brown)

Au where mapleshades kits survive but riverclan still kicks them out so she raises her kits alone to take revenge on the clans

this one got me excited! i wanted to tackle one aspect of mapleshades parenting with each of them

mapleshade takes them to the barn where she wouldve originally died after she is betrayed.

Larchshade- aquaphobia

larchkit, petalkit and patchkit may have survived the swollen river, but larchkit still strongly remembers what happened that night. he is terrified of water for life, and even wet moss makes him uncomfortable. he’s clumsy and often scratches himself up when falling, this is made worse by the fact that being near water makes him skittish.

Petaldusk- trauma

petalpaw is the smartest of the three, and begins to fear for patchpaws devotion to his mother. one night, she runs away and finds her dad, appledusk, his new mate, reedshine, and their kit

she learns that he is actually not that bad of a cat. she also talks to dawnpaw, who has been having a really good kithood. probably her mentor is perchpaw (possible warrior name: perchtwig?) petalpaw realizes that mapleshade hasn’t been a good mother and decides later to leave mapleshade. she describes what happened when she was in mapleshades care to the leader and the leader is mortified. she is taken in by the clan and later given the petaldusk to honor her father after all the pain she endured. 

Patchdapple- bitterness

patchdapple, who in the book was the most attached to mapleshade, is taught most easily that appledusk deserves to die. he trains harder than the other two, and on the day before she leaves, fights petalpaw. she’s always worried that one of them saw ravenwing alive and knows she lied (they didn’t). this combined with the fact that patchpaw has been violent lately, she is terrified of him. they fight so brutally that she blinds him in one eye. he still fights, however. mapleshade is pleased with this.

story i put too much thought into

after patchpaw is blinded in one eye, mapleshade is furious. she doesn’t abandon petalpaw, but she doesn’t talk to her as often. she’s not nearly as warm. scared of what might happen, she leaves the next night. patchpaw is even worse now. he calls her a traitor.

mapleshade still has a grudge against the 3 cats that are “responsible” for her being banished. she tells her kits about them.

petalpaw (before discovering appledusk and dawnpaw in riverclan) is sent out by her mom to kill ravenwing as a test of strength. he’s on his way to moonstone. she pins him since he doesn’t know how to fight, but she realizes she can’t do it. she realizes ravenwing isn’t that bad of a cat. ravenwing says he can take her to her father. this is where she meets him for the first time. she tells ravenwing to not leave camp for a while, then goes to mapleshade and said it’s done. mapleshade is pleased. (obviously this is all before the eyeball thing)

[the remaining kits are given warrior names]

while out on a walk, mapleshade secretly lures larchshade to the snackrocks while frecklewish is there. larchshade begins to get nervous, and eventually accidentally bumps a rock and a snack comes out. it bites frecklewish. mapleshade is close and fast enough to cover frecklewish’s mouth. nobody comes to help her, and she dies. the snake bites larchshade, however, and he dies too.

mapleshade and patchdapple grieve. patchdapple tries to stop her from blaming herself. he respects her too deeply to accept that she has any reckless urges.

later that day, while patchdapple is hunting for the both of them, he spots ravenwing collecting herbs. he kills ravenwing in anger. then he goes to riverclan to confront petaldusk. he’s even angrier when he learns her warrior name. he demands she comes back to mapleshade to beg for forgiveness, and the two of them begin to fight in the river between riverclan and thunderclan. reedshine finds them and screams for help. appledusk comes and finds them. he tries to break up the fighting. in the scuffle, patchdapple kicks her off and stands up. he tells her that larchshade died killing frecklewish. he says that she’s a disappointment, being the only one not to kill one of the three cats. she’s furious and throws herself at him. petaldusk aims at patchdapple, trying to kill him once and for all, but at the last second patchdapple dodges and she hits appledusk with all her might. without enough time to change her course, she sinks her teeth into appledusks throat. appledusk begins to bleed. he passes out from blood-loss. patchdapple tells her to finish him off and return to mapleshade, or call for help like a coward and he’ll kill her. petaldusk threatens him. he says that if she fights, appledusk will loose too much blood and die. she screams for the medicine cat and throws herself at him. 

the medicine cat comes and drags appledusk away. they two don’t even notice.

petaldusk aims for patchdapples throat the same way she accidentally hurt appledusk. he goes limp. she relaxes for a moment, assuming she’d won.

patchdapple suddenly gets on top of the grapple and slams her down into the water. he starts to bleed out, but is able to keep her under the water. petaldusk loses consciousness due to both head shock and breathing water. she sees several starclan cats (including her brother) and they give her a choice. her life or appledusks.

she choses to sacrifice herself for appledusk.

all the riverclan cats run to the bank (told to go there by the medicine cat) and see the cats, both dead, in the river together.

Petaldusk looks similar to Sandstorm, she should since she’s somewhat of an ancestor to her. Reincarnations have similar markings to their past lives which is why Stone looks the way he does. I love heterochromia and sectional heterochromia. Petaldusk is ace/aro and Stone is ace/biromantic with a male preference.

In the bottom left, Rabbitwhisker. Decided that he should have purple eyes also for future reference, Whitetail is a purple eyed albino. Having “special” eyes like purple, red or heterochromia is considered an omen is Windclan. Rabbitwhisker hates his eyes as a result and does everything he can to prove he’s not an omen. Rabbit is bisexual.

To the right, I haven’t drawed Morningflower and that was a crime. She has a beautiful sun marking on her eye that I love. I usually make my torties more black such as Mapleshade, Patchshade or Spottedleaf but I prefer making Morningflower more white and gold. Decided to show both sides of her face. Morningflower is bisexual.

Decided to draw Flintfang, I love him. He’s a great uncle to all his siblings kits. He does have a favorite though: Badgerfang. He has the -fang suffix for a reason just like any other Shadowclan cat with the -fang suffix. He’s mates with Runningnose. He’s ace/homoromantic.

Next, Darkstripe. Decided to fix up his design a bit. Archeye is his sire and he’s aware of it mostly because he has Shadowclan traits in the ears and eyes. Darkstripe is ace/aro and a trans tom. A lot of people just make him gay but I like ace/aro better. Attractive by Shadowclan standards and somewhat hates it.
